kiki documentary

The new Ballroom Scene documentary KIKI (that we posted on about a year ago) is finally coming out on February 24 in Los Angeles and VOD (March 1 in NYC). Ahead of the U.S. release, director Sara Jordenö and co-writer Twiggy Pucci Garcon just dropped this mini-video/trailer, featuring clips from the film, and a track by Divoli S’vere of queer collective/record label Qween Beat. Check it out below!

Wot’s da KIKI:

In New York City, LGBTQ youth-of-color gather out on the Christopher Street Pier, practicing a performance-based art form, Ballroom, which was made famous in the early 1990s by Madonna’s music video “Vogue” and the documentary “Paris Is Burning.” Twenty-five years after these cultural touchstones, a new and very different generation of LGBTQ youth have formed an artistic activist subculture, named the Kiki Scene.

KIKI follows seven characters from the Kiki community over the course of three years, using their preparations and spectacular performances at events known as Kiki balls as a framing device while delving into their battles with homelessness, illness and prejudice as well as their gains towards political influence and the conquering of affirming gender-expressions. In KIKI we meet Twiggy Pucci Garçon, the founder and gatekeeper for the Haus of Pucci, Chi Chi, Gia, Chris, Divo, Symba and Zariya. Each of these remarkable young people represents a unique and powerful personal story, illuminating the Kiki scene in particular, as well as queer life in the U.S. for LGBTQ youth-of-color as a whole.

wow
Surviving Trump: The Art of Resistance’s

grand opening commenced last night from 8-11PM in our store front gallery off Hollywood Boulevard right here in sunny Los Angeles, California and it made herstory, hunties! From the Kaplan Twins, to Raja, to Daphne Guiness, it was a star studded event that made a bold statement: that we reject the President Elect. When people weren’t purchasing “Soylent Gold” products or bidding on the silent auction to benefit the ACLU, they were taking selfies with the Go Go Boys in Trump masks and ‘The Emperor Has No Balls’ statue.

Here are some of the magical events that really do make the world go WOW:

1) The window displays were stunning.

Screen Shot 2017-01-19 at 10.19.39 AM Screen Shot 2017-01-19 at 10.19.46 AM Screen Shot 2017-01-19 at 10.19.53 AM

From the Hollywood Boulevard perspective, it was as iconic to look at as you would imagine, chuck full of original Warholian products much like a super market, except this version is shopping til you drop in a high art fashion.

2) The “Soylent Gold” Products were genius.

Screen Shot 2017-01-19 at 10.19.14 AM Screen Shot 2017-01-19 at 10.19.05 AM Screen Shot 2017-01-19 at 10.19.21 AM Screen Shot 2017-01-19 at 10.19.29 AM

From Trumpopoly money to “Soylent Gold” products (with 10% more NOTHING inside!), it was a dystopian grocery shopper’s wet dream!

“Soylent Gold” is a commentary inspired by the film Soylent Green (for all you millenials):

3) The Art Was Next-Level (and benefited the ACLU):

With over 53 artists participating, there was something socially conscious, smart, vile, and artful that everyone could take home with them through the silent auction.

4) The Go Go Boys In Trump Masks Are Everything You Didn’t Know You Needed

With doom’s day tomorrow, I want to live in my Obama bubble for one more day (the next four years). I’ve compiled 67 pictures of our beautiful first family with President Obama, FLOTUS Michelle, and Malia and Sasha. Scrolling through the past eight years of our lives with theirs has been a true honor and we here at World of Wonder Productions are forever grateful to them. If you have a lot of blues, anxiety, and trauma about tomorrow’s inauguration, you are not alone. May these timeless images help you cope with the horror that will ensue in the future.

Thank you President Obama:

NYC Drag Duo Sateen Spreads Hope in “Love Makes the World” feat. Violet Chachki, Amanda Lepore, Merrie Cherry, Aquaria, Ryan Burke & More!

sateen love makes the world

Wife and husband drag duo Sateen (Queen Sateen and Exquisite) have a glorious new video for single Love Makes the World (dir. Matt Sparks), off their debut album Greatest Hits (available 1/20 on iTunes). If you live in NYC, you’ve seen these two at pretty much every cool party in town. The Brooklyn-based pop group were compelled to send a message to all the kiddies out there who are feeling disenchanted by the new Donald Trump regime…letting them know that their voices will STILL be heard, and they have a global family on their side. Read the full statement from Sateen below, and watch Love Makes The World, featuring Violet Chachki, Amanda Lepore, Stephanie Stone, Ryan Burke, Merrie Cherry, Rify Royalty, Will Sheridan, Sussi, Aquaria and more!

Sateen:

“When Barack Obama was elected president of the United States, he represented hope for the future. With the election of Donald Trump, that once, bright future now seems bleak. Hatred and bigotry have been given a megaphone, and that is simply not okay. We wrote this song Love Makes the World to everybody that feels hopeless and scared for their future, under the Trump administration. We will rise up, and they will not ignore us. All of us: queer people, trans people, black people, muslim people, Mexican people, lesbian people and gay people… all marginalized people who feel their voice is silenced, We are your family. We love for you and we will fight for you. It is just a song, but it is a start.”

Wow. Jennifer Lopez stunned on the 2017 People’s Choice red carpet in an open-front, jewel-encrusted Reem Acra dress elected by style team Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn.

“As a departure from her go to colors and silhouettes, it was the perfect combination of sexy, classic and fashion forward with a touch of skin and sparkle,” Rob & Mariel tell Billboard about her Reem Arca gown. “This dress felt new and unexpected, and that’s what we always love to achieve on the red carpet. Love to keep them guessing!”

Absolutely stunning.

J. Lo won her first People’s Choice Award (after six nominations in the past) her her role in NBC’s crime drama series Shades of Blue. (via Billboard).

AN-INCONVENIENT-SEQUEL-TRUTH-TO-POWER

After a successful grand opening of “Surviving Trump: The Art of Resistance,” WOW Co-Founder Fenton Bailey jetted off to Sundance Film Festival and attended the premiere of Al Gore’s sophomore film “An Inconvenient Sequel,” ten years after the original documentary, which was a down-to-facts reveal of global warming, and well, our “current climate.”

Bailey penned a review and how it’s “more timely than ever.”

Vice President Al Gore spoke last night after a standing ovation at #SundanceFilmFestival’s opening night of #AnInconvenientSequel. Ten years after “An Inconvenient Truth” the film gives us a harrowing update on the acceleration of climate change, and the steps being taken to avert the end of the world.

It is a sequel as powerful and even more timely and urgent given that this was the day before the inauguration of the Climate Denier In Chief.

It could so easily have all been doom and gloom, but the fact is that more energy from the sun hits the earth every day than the entire planet consumes in a year. So there is no energy crisis, although we might first destroy the planet and ourselves bingeing to death on fossil fuels.

Some of the most gripping scenes in the film detail the role played by Al Gore in the behind-the-scenes negotiations to pull off the Paris accord. You realize the value and giant leap it represents, especially when it was a victory snatched from the jaws of defeat.

Sadly the election of Trump is another enormous setback. The subtitle of the film is #truthtopower and included Gore going to meet with Trump post-election. Honoring the confidentiality of the meeting, he nonetheless made it clear that Trump is currently on the wrong side of history and expressed what felt to me like unfounded optimism about the long term outcome.

In front of me sat a probably climate denier and trumpanzee. He refused to applaud, to stand, or in anyway join in the emotional response to the film. I could not understand how anyone could see the facts, see the charts, hear the experts and still think global warming is a hoax. Seeing so clearly is not believing to so many people.

But beside me sat my son Nolan, ten years old. I wondered if perhaps the film was either too boring or too much for him. It was a lot of information and some truly heart-wrenching scenes of suffering. So I asked him afterwards if he was scared; “No” he said ” I learnt a lot. We just need to fix this.” He got it, he took ownership and clearly intends to do something about it. I was stunned. I was so proud of him, and so honored to be his dad. And fuck the guy sitting in front of me.

Where we have so far failed, and to the extent that we have taken two steps back with this unfit President and his loony cabinet, I realized that – as Gore said – right and truth will ultimately and can only prevail. This will get fixed if not by my generation at least by subsequent ones.

And Just Like That, The White House’s LGBT Rights Page Disappears

Last night I finished my poster for the Women’s March here in LA and after looking at my masterpiece, an overwhelming sadness came over me. A new wave of grief swooped right in and the reality of our current nightmare sunk in (more than it ever had before in the last three tiring months). Although I’m energized for marching with my peers and like-minded strangers in Pershing Square tomorrow, to be frank: I’m depressed AF.

As we all wore black in the offices today, we turned off the TVs  and reflected. And as these quiet moments before the storm sat with us, the transition of power from good to pure evil begins with the disappearance of the LGBT Rights page on the White House website.

This is not “business as usual.”

This is NOT normal.

Check it out:

From TechCrunch:

It’s just been over an hour since Trump took office and whitehouse.gov/lgbt has now been replaced by a Trump “transitionsplash” page.

screen-shot-2017-01-20-at-10-09-11-am

Update: There’s no longer a transition page. The White House LGBT link is gone altogether.

The Obama administration introduced the White House LGBT page to highlight major legislative achievements, historic court victories and important policy changes for gay and transgender people. The page also shined a spotlight on certain campaigns for gay rights such as the “It Gets Better” campaign to help those in the LGBT community struggling with thoughts of suicide.

That campaign, as of this writing, still redirects to an archived “Strengthening Civil Rights”page. But, of course, all of that is subject to change. However, any mention of LGBT is now gone.

Is this just part of the transition and will we see a new page with Trump’s stamp of approval? Who knows. Trump has been praised by the Republican group the Log Cabin Republicans as the “most pro-LGBT nominee in the history of the Republican party.” Though those same Log Cabin Republicans also refused to endorse him as a candidate.

The LGBT community has expressed concern over a Trump presidency, especially given Vice President Pence, in his role as Indiana governor, opposed laws protecting the LGBT community.

In related news, it appears all mentions of climate change have also been erased throughout the site.

You can read more about the Obama administration’s work on gay and transgender rights in this archived press release here. In the meantime, we will be sure to keep you in the loop if we do happen to see a new page pop up.

If our Instagram feed or our recent grand opening of “Surviving Trump: The Art of Resistance” wasn’t telling enough of how World of Wonder Productions has boldly positioned ourselves firmly as part of the resistance against Trump, his loony cabinet, and his inauguration, well then here’s a picture of WOWers illustrating their distain in a tasteful manner. Staffers wore all black as a form of mourning, protest, and unity with one another as we move forward into this hellacious nightmare.

SLOW DISOLVE TO FADE OUT

What is with the tortured, tragic lives of great fashion designers?

Christian Dior was one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20th century.

He was born in Normandy, the heir to a French fertilizer fortune. As a child, Dior loved to draw and he was able to sell his sketches for a few coins. In his early 20s, Dior’s father financed a small Paris art gallery for his talented son.

Starting as a sketch artist, Dior worked his way up to a designer in The House Of Piguet. He left his position there to serve in the French Army, but after WW II, Dior established his own fashion house with the backing of his lover, a very wealthy textile magnate. Within 12 years he expanded his business to 15 countries and he employed over 2,000 people.

Dior is known mostly for a look which employed narrow shoulders, a constricted waist, an emphasized bust, and a long, wide skirt, all in striking contrast to the severity of wartime fashions. His designs represented consistent classic elegance.

Dior’s “The New Look” revolutionized women’s clothing and reestablished Paris as the center of the fashion world after WW II. He spread his fashions around the world when he and his partner, Jacques Rouet, started franchises in the fashion industry. In 1953, Yves Saint-Laurent became Dior’s assistant and was destined to be his successor but was reluctantly forced to leave when the time came for his own military service, if you can imagine such a thing.

Dior introduced its first collection called “Ligne Corolle” with ultra-feminine dresses, inspired by the French fashion of the late 19th century. Elegance and charm distinguished his creations. He experimented with new silhouettes and new lengths, using sophisticated and luxurious materials. The Dior woman had rounded shoulders, long flared skirts that were eight inches from the ground, wide, flat hats, the famous corset, long gloves and high heels.

It was in direct contrast with fellow French designer Coco Chanel’s style, which in that era had allowed women to enjoy stylistic freedom. Instead, Dior gave a romantic, elegant, feminine model for women.  His clothes were works of art, built and structured in every detail that only in the mid-1950s moved to lighter, more comfortable, simpler lines. Dior was the first to associate the style of accessories to the lines of clothing, selling bags, shoes, scents and cosmetics.

His favorite places to sketch were in his bathtub or bed. In 1957, Dior became the first designer to be featured on a cover of Time Magazine, proving that he was true fashion royalty. Hollywood embraced Dior’s designs and the world’s most elegant and fashionable women chose his dresses; the Duchess Of Windsor, Rita Hayworth, and Ava Gardner were regular clients. Dior designed Marlene Dietrich’s entire wardrobe for Stage Fright (1950) directed by Alfred Hitchcock (who never wore Dior).

Towards the end of his life, Dior had a hectic round of special injections to wake up in the morning, injections for his appetite, and more injections to sleep. His niece, who was his favorite relative, openly blamed Dior’s Jewish manager who procured his medications, along with Dior’s collection of hot young men, for being part of a Jewish plot forcing him towards his death. Dior found himself at odds with his family as his wealth grew and he eventually disinherited the entire bunch.

“Finally, everything that has been part of my life, whether I wanted it to or not, has expressed itself in my dresses.”

Bisexual, with many lovers of both sexes, Dior’s last companion was Jacques Benita, a young Algerian singer, who he met in 1956 and who, from that time, had to be included in everything on Dior’s social calendar. After the Fall 1957 Collection, Dior was desperate for a rest and decided to take Benita to Tuscany, despite the warnings of his astrologer, who was very much against the vacation. Dior was so infatuated with Benita that he decided to diet to try to become more attractive, even though Benita said this really was not necessary. Dior was a drug addict who was taken from this world by an overdose while enjoying a special sexual liaison. He was just 52-years-old when he went.

At the time of his passing, Dior salons had been opened in 24 countries. The House Of Dior, led by designers Yves Saint Laurent, then Marc Bohan, continues to be a fashion leader and is now associated with a much wider range of merchandise: men’s wear, household linens, and fragrances.

Dior was a classic designer and he was a star. His life was filled with parties, exquisite things, pretty boys, illegal substances… all the things that famous people eat, feel, and own.

“I came from the people

They need to adore me

So Christian Dior me from my head to my toes

I need to be dazzling

I want to be Rainbow High

They must have excitement

And so must I”

Evita (1978)

emoluments

Donald-Trump-Inauguration-Address-Jan-20-2017-Getty-640x480
Yes, the minute he was sworn in, Trump was officially violating the Constitution through something called The Emoluments Clause. Norman Eisen, a fellow at the Brookings Institute, explains in a video for Think Progress,

The emoluments clause prohibits any person holding a federal office (such as, for example, the presidency) from accepting “any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state.” In other words: People in the federal government aren’t allowed to take anything at all from any foreign government entity.

But Trump still retains ownership of his international business empire as president and is taking in a stream of payments from foreign governments — money that ultimately goes into his pockets.

Watch.

Seth Meyers, who has been KILLING it on Late Night with A Closer Look, agrees and said Thursday night,

The most exciting thing about tomorrow’s inauguration is this: the moment Trump takes his hand off that Bible tomorrow he may very well be in violation of the Constitution. That’s because he has not divested from his company or put his holdings in a blind trust….

I guess that explains the schedule, Noon swearing-in, 3 p.m. inaugural parade, 6 p.m. impeachment hearing.”

Watch.
