Tony Orlando

Tony Orlando

Tony Orlando and Sam Moore have joined the very short list of D-list entertainers performing at galas around Washington the night of Emperor Cheeto’s coronation.

Orlando is best known for being the front man for Tony Orlando & Dawn. Nearly 45 years go in 1973 they had a hit with Tie a Yellow Ribbon, a favorite among servicemen and their families. Orlando, 72, is set to perform at Friday night’s Salute to Our Armed Services Ball. That ball is free by invitation only for members and veterans of the armed services and their families.

Also, Sam Moore of the R&B duo Sam & Dave has announced that he will perform at the Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration in D.C. The singer said in a press release,

I was a participant in the civil rights movement and have seen many positive changes and advancement in my 81 years of living in this wonderful country, but I know we must all join hands and work together with our new President.

I honestly believe that if we can accomplish this, the best is yet to come. We all as Americans need to unite behind our new President and give him a chance. He needs everyone’s support to make America greater, stronger and an even better country.”

OMG. Oh well, he’s 81, so we’ll let that slide I guess. Disappointing.

Other musicians now playing events around the inauguration include 3 Doors Down, Jackie Evancho and Toby Keith.

#YASQUEEN: BenDeLaCreme’s Letters to the Revolution!

Ben_00201_8x10

After the devastating November election that is quickly becoming reality this Friday, LetterstotheRevolution.com has been a host of intersectional inspiration to everyone. Artists and activists who have the time have been submitting written essays of hope, vengeance, unity and love to prepare everyone for the next four years. Drag Race Season 6 star BenDeLaCreme submitted a beautiful letter to the site about the history of Drag as protest that you can read down below!

Hey Gaybies,

How are you? No, it’s OK — I know how you are. Things aren’t great. I’m not feeling great either. But, you know, it’s OK — we’re all freaked out. And it just means our eyes and ears and all of our head holes are taking in information accurately, and our poor little aching hearts are processing that information appropriately. And all the resulting fear or despair or fury or crippling anxiety — that is all fully warranted. So at least we aren’t all depressed for no reason! We’ve got really good reasons! We are united in sadness and terror. And we have been before.

History is full of sad, scared people who turned that into something else. Into something great and inspiring and beautiful.

Here’s what I think about, as a human who is also a drag queen — I don’t know if you know I’m a drag queen, but I am — and I love drag, so much.  At this moment in history, a lot of people love drag; it’s all over the place: on TV and the Internet and probably in magazines, if people still read those. People love drag because it’s sparkly and funny and fierce and about self-expression. It’s about taking the wildest parts of the inside of you and sticking them to your face and maybe doing a split. But the reason drag looks how it looks and feels how it feels, the reason that drag is so big and so bold and so fabulous is because it had to be.

Drag was born in the shadows. It’s a terrible cliche — but you can picture it, can’t you?

A group of people society didn’t want to see collected in small, dark spaces where they could be seen by one another. All these unwanted people huddled together in the shadows, they could have adapted like those cave newts with no eyeballs or just lain down and mossed over there in the dark, but that’s not what they did. What these people did in the dark was create light — party lights and disco balls and sequins and glitter rose from this place. Beautiful things that could never grow in daylight. We flourished in the dark. And when those walls that surrounded us couldn’t hold our light anymore, we started throwing bricks — that was Stonewall (if you don’t know, look it up).

That’s what we do: we claw and we fight and we resist. We make art and beauty and music and magic. We share and we commune and we love. And when someone says we can’t do that anymore, we say, “Fuck you!,” and we fight, and we resist again.

These people, who were told over and over to never show themselves became the showiest thing imaginable. They shone themselves so bright, that now the entire world cannot look away. That is the power of being held down. That is the power of being told “no.” That is the power that comes from being pushed into the dark. And that is us now.

This story of resistance has been true for countless groups, cultures that flourished against the odds and led uprisings. Now, we have the opportunity to do it together. We have the potential for an intersectional unity that has never occurred on this scale because of all those hardworking ancestors of ours who gave us a greater understanding of ourselves and one another, of the worth of all of the downtrodden folks ready to rebel.

So love yourself and fight for yourself and love one another and fight for one another. This is how we survive. This is how you will survive. And when you do, just think of the feeling when you look back and see the beautiful things that you grew in the dark.

Yours in sequins,

BenDeLaCreme

(via LetterstotheRevolution.com)

If that wasn’t humbling and encouraging for you, I don’t know what is! Stay strong everyone we are in this together.

Feminist folk duo CocoRosie, sisters Bianca “Coco” and Sierra “Rosie” Casady, have just released new single Smoke ’em Out, once again featuring singer/activist/heroine ANOHNI. The track, from their forthcoming album, is being released ahead of the Women’s March on Washington as a protest against President-Elect Donald Trump. “We feel a call to rise, shout, and burn the house down”, says CocoRosie via their SoundCloud page. “The future is female.” Check out the full statement about Trump from CocoRosie below…and stream Smoke ’em Out NOW!!!

CocoRosie:

“Today we share a new song to inspire the weary-disappointed hearts of so many crest-fallen citizens. We just started working on a new album, but “Smoke ‘em Out” begged to be turned loose on the world now, as a means of participation during these turbulent yet invigorating times. Joined on guest vocals by our fellow Future Feminist ANOHNI, “Smoke ‘em Out” welcomes the new character who will be occupying the White House with a mob of women and children armed with forks and knives. In the wake of this unnatural disaster, we feel a call to rise, shout, and burn the house down. The future is female.”

It’s REALLY Happening Now! NBC Just Ordered 10 New Episodes of “Will & Grace”!

Screen-Shot-2017-01-04-at-8.21.04-AM-1
Yes, it’s really a real thing now! NBC has just ordered 10 episodes of Will & Grace. NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said,

We’re thrilled that one of the smartest, funniest, and most defining comedies in NBC history is coming back. This groundbreaking series for everything from gay rights to social and political commentary — all disguised as a high-speed train of witty pop culture — is coming back where it belongs.

The limited series reunites Emmy winners Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullally with series creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan. James Burrows, who directed the entire eight-season run of the original series, will serve as director and executive producer on the revival.

NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke said,

We started talking with Mutchnick and Kohan about producing new episodes right after they shot the secret reunion show back in September, and the fact that all four of the original stars were excited about getting back into production is a testament to the joyful experience they had doing nearly 200 episodes for eight seasons. Few things cut through the clutter these days, especially in comedy, and ‘Will and Grace’ is one of the best.

Cheers, queers! I’ll drink to that!

#BornThisDay: Dolly Parton

0

 dolly best

January 19, 1946Dolly Parton:

“I’m not offended by dumb blonde jokes because I know I am not dumb. I also know I am not blond.”

I love Dolly Parton. I love her big voice, her big hair, and her big boobs.

I also admire her. Parton is passionate about early childhood education, and she has done amazing, important work to give kids who are born in her part of the Appalachian Mountains a good start in life with her Dollywood Foundation, which runs The Imagination Library, providing rural Tennessee kids a new book every month until their fifth birthdays. So far, Parton and The Imagination Library have given away more than 55 million books.

Parton is an outspoken advocate for Women’s Rights. A good Christian girl, like Tammy Faye LaValley Bakker Messner, she seems to have actually read The Bible and gets the loving message provided by the life of Jesus. She has been an especially good friend to her gay fans, a longtime supporter Gay Rights and Marriage Equality, even appearing on the cover of Out Magazine.

Parton’s production company, Sandollar Productions, which she started with her longtime manager/business partner/close friend Sandy Gallin, an openly gay man, chose, as its first project, the Academy Award winning documentary about the making of the AIDS Quilt, Common Threads (1989).

Drag Queens adore Parton, which is the highest compliment a human being can hold. There are those wigs, the costumes, the trashy makeup, the over-the-top, larger-than-life hair, and we still believe her sure-enough sweetness and the love she exudes.

Parton knows about family. She was born Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean in rural Tennessee. I think we all know her backstory, but I’ll tell you anyway. She was born fourth of 12 children. Her father paid the doctor that attended her birth with a bag of oatmeal. Parton’s father was a sharecropper, growing tobacco. He was one of 15 children. When Parton’s mother was 30 years old, she had already given birth to eight children. Her mother was one of 10 children.

Parton began composing songs before she could read or write. Her mother would transcribe her lyrics on paper for her. When Parton was just seven-years-old, she was playing the guitar and singing her tunes to anyone who would listen. The cows, chickens and cats were her audience. Parton and her sisters sang at the Pentecostal Church where her grandfather was the preacher.

When she was 10-years-old, an uncle brought her to the attention of Cas Walker, the owner a chain of grocery stores. Walker produced a radio show to promote his shops. Parton sang on his Knoxville radio show in front of a live audience. They loved her. In 1960, Parton signed with Gold Band Records, and recorded a single of Puppy Love and on the flip side, Girl Left Alone. She was 14-years-old when she had her first record release. When she was 16-years-old, she signed with a major label, Mercury Records.

In 1964, Parton became the first person in her family to graduate from high school. The very next day, she got on a Greyhound bus bound for Nashville, with nothing but her songs, her old guitar and all of her belongings packed in three paper bags from Walker’s grocery store.

In Nashville, Parton rented a small apartment above the Wishy Washy Laundromat. While waiting for her clothes to dry, Carl Dean stopped to talk to Parton. They fell in love. The couple wanted to get married, but her agent was against it. They kept their wedding a secret for two years. The couple will celebrate their 51st wedding anniversary in May. Although they have no children of their own, Parton and Dean have raised five of her siblings.

“When I am home, I spend Sunday with my husband. If we’re not cooking, we travel around in our camper, stop at fast-food restaurants, and picnic. We love that stuff that will harden your arteries in a hurry.”

dolly

In 1967, Parton’s song Dumb Blonde placed in The Country Music Charts Top 10. The accomplishment was noted by singer/songwriter Porter Wagoner. He asked Parton to sing on his popular television show for $60,000 per season. Parton and Wagoner had a difficult, often contentious relationship, but they recorded and performed together until 1974. In 1973, Parton wrote a little ditty titled I Will Always Love You as a thank you gift for Wagoner. We all know how that turned out.  In the same writing session, Parton penned another huge hit, Jolene. Between 1968 and 1972, the prolific Parton released an astonishing 21 albums.

A fan named Jane Fonda sent Parton a script for a film titled 9 To 5 in 1980. Parton was not certain that acting was for her, but she reluctantly took the role. Parton enjoyed acting, audiences enjoyed Parton on screen and she was nominated for an Academy Award for writing the popular title song.

In 1996, research scientists named the world’s first cloned mammal, a sheep, after Parton. Ian Wilmut, who was in charge of the project said:

“Dolly (the sheep) is derived from a mammary gland cell and we couldn’t think of a more impressive pair of glands than Dolly Parton’s.”

On Halloween 1999, Parton entered a Dolly Parton Lookalike Contest at a gay bar in Santa Monica. She lost.

Parton claims that she has written about 5,000 songs and she composes a new one every few days:

“Songwriting is my way of channeling my feelings and my thoughts. Not just mine, but the things I see, the people I care about. My head would explode if I didn’t get some of that stuff out.”

Parton has sold more than 100 million albums, received two Oscar nominations and a Tony Award nomination, and 46 Grammy Award nominations with eight wins, tying her with Bruce Springsteen for the most Grammy nominations ever.  In 2011 she received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2005, she was honored with our country’s highest arts award, the National Medal Of Arts, and the next year she was given a Kennedy Center Honor.

This past summer, Parton released Pure And Simple, a new album of stripped-down recordings of previously released songs, covers, and a couple of new tunes. It is a sweet album with a big shot of much needed sunshine during all the darkness and anxiety of our troubled time. It is quintessential Parton, that reminds us why she has such staying power. In an increasingly uncertain world, it’s comforting to know that Dolly Parton is a reliable comfort.

“If I can get my dress on, my weight is under control.”

She built a Dolly Parton-themed theme park. Dollywood opened in 1986. It was originally a tiny tourist attraction that opened in 1961 as The Rebel Railroad. Dollywood put Pigeon Forge, Tennessee on the map and gave jobs to hundreds of people in the area. She is the real job creator! The park had a million visitors in the first six months after opening and they still have more than three million visitors a year. I want a Stephen Rutledge theme park SteveTown!, a place with Marijuana tasting rooms, whiskey and pizza bars, a Daniel Craig ride, and Stephen singing songs on the Steve Stage every day at noon. Every evening at twilight, Stephen ascends to the top of The Magic Mushroom Castle with a baby pink spot light following him.

“I look just like the girl next door… if you happen to live next door to an amusement park.”

Parton is fabulous and fabulous comes from self-invention. This is what us Old School, Pre-Stonewall Gays love the most: Getting knocked down by society and then having the genius and the artistry to remake yourself into a fabulous creature. Don’t you think Dolly Parton fits the bill? She is a Coat Of Many Colors, from her style to her stylish struggle against adversity and prejudice, plus her unabashed celebration of sexuality.

Parton and all her companies are estimated at more than $600 million. However, she has no maids, drivers or servants. Parton is nothing if not a survivor, which feeds her status as a Gay Icon. She has defied her critics, stayed true to herself, and turned a stereotype into a power position. She certainly holds a very special place in our culture, embraced by Conservative Christians and gay people in equal measure.

What is your favorite Parton project? I am still over the moon for the Trio Albums with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt.

“The only way I’d be caught without makeup is if my radio fell in the bathtub and electrocuted me and I was between makeup sessions at home. I hope my husband would slap a little lipstick on me before he took me to the morgue.”

Thank you, Mr. President!

Barack Obama and Joe Biden brought us the most gay friendly administration in history, by a mile. President Barack Obama, June 26, 2015

“We are big and vast and diverse; a nation of people with different backgrounds and beliefs, different experiences and stories, but bound by our shared ideal that no matter who you are or what you look like, how you started off, or how and who you love, America is a place where you can write your own destiny.”

Health and Human Services (HHS) funded the Services and Advocacy for LGBT Elders (SAGE) to establish the first national resource center for older LGBTQ people.

The Matthew Shepard And James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act signed into law.

Signed an Executive Order prohibiting federal contractors from discriminating against any employee or applicant for employment because sexual orientation or gender identity.

“Too many folks are still targeted, and transgender women of color are particularly vulnerable. That kind of ugliness simply doesn’t belong in America. That’s not who we are.”

Housing And Urban Development (HUD) issues Equal Access Rule making it clear that housing that is financed or insured by HUD must be made available without regard to actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status. It also prohibits owners and operators of HUD-funded housing, or housing whose financing was insured by HUD, from inquiring about an applicant’s sexual orientation or gender identity or denying housing on that basis. In addition, the guidance makes clear that sexual orientation and gender identity should not and cannot be part of any lending decision when it comes to getting an FHA-insured mortgage.

Engaged with governments around the world to advance the rights of LGBTQ people, including various public statements and resolutions at the UN. President Obama has also issued a Presidential Memorandum that directed all Federal agencies engaged abroad to ensure that US diplomacy promotes and protect the human rights of LGBTQ people.

“And the truth is that courage comes in a lot of forms. There’s courage in the moment of danger, the kind our troops show in battle. There’s the courage of resilience and perseverance, the kind of brave or wounded warriors. There’s moral courage, of the sort we saw in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Harvey Milk, who fight for their ideals. Then, there’s the kind of courage it takes to be true to yourself, even if society doesn’t always accept or understand you. And nobody’s got a monopoly on that kind of courage. It can come from all walks of life. And to a young boy or girl out there struggling with their own identity, the folks in this room are heroes. They’ve show extraordinary courage. Not only are you helping others find the strength to be true to who they are, you’re helping America be true to who we are as a nation. And that’s ultimately what this pride month is all about.”

The State Department grew the Global Equality Fund, a public-private partnership to advance the human rights of LGBTQ people globally. It has allocated over $30 million to civil society organizations in 80 countries worldwide.

Henry Gerber House in Chicago was designated a National Historic Landmark. Once the residence of noted gay rights activist Henry Gerber, the home was where the nation’s first chartered LGBTQ rights organization, the Society For Human Rights, was formed in 1924.

Supported legislative efforts to ban the use of Conversion Therapy against LGBTQ minors.

“Those of us who know freedom and opportunity thanks to the toil and blood of those who came before us, we have an extra responsibility to extend freedom and opportunity to other people who are still marginalized and still facing injustice.”

“So, there are still battles to wage, more hearts and minds to change. As long as there’s a single child in America that’s afraid they won’t be accepted for who they are, we’ve got more work to do.”

Commuted the prison sentence of Trans whistleblower Chelsea Manning and pardoned Peter Heidgerd, a captain in the Army, convicted in 1989 for “conduct unbecoming of an officer” when it was discovered he was in a relationship with a fellow male soldier. Heidgerd was imprisoned for a year in Fort Leavenworth, the same prison that currently houses Manning.
