A new Christmas ad for the Scandinavian electronics retailer Elgiganten shows a trans teen at a family gathering, feeling awkward and out of place. Across the room, her father looks pretty uncomfortable, as well. He gets up, slowly crosses over to her, and hands her a present. She opens it and smiles when she realizes her dad has given her a hair straightener. A girl’s hair straightener. He accepts her. Awww.

The ad ends with a slogan in Norwegian that translates as “Let the gifts talk.”

Via HuffPo:

HelloGiggles blogger Alim Kheraj says that what makes the ad so great is how real it is.

“Not only does it showcase how difficult it can be for some people during the holiday season,” Kheraj wrote on Thursday, “but it’s a realistic portrayal of how families deal with transitions in their lives, whatever they may be.”

One commenter on the original YouTube post was more succinct, saying in Norwegian: “What? An ad that is actually good and a genuine message? Applause.”

Watch it below.

Cadmus on left with Anderson

Cadmus on left with Anderson

December 17, 1904Paul Cadmus is one of those influential Gay American Artists whose perception of sexual identity dramatically shaped 20th Century painting, along with: Thomas Eakins, Marsden Hartley, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Robert Mapplethorpe, among other favorites. Gay artists were frequently not fully a part of the society that they portrayed, instead taking on the role of outsider. From that point of view they found innovative, revolutionary ways of offering their art.

Cadmus is a longtime favorite artist for The Husband and me. We have a “coffee table” book of his work that has had a great deal of attention and perusing. We have been thrilled at seeing many of his works in museums. I am hard pressed to choose a favorite.

Cadmus’ life spanned nearly all of the last century, entering this world in 1904, and ending in 1999, after taking his daily walk down his country road, and getting into bed with his partner of 35 years, singer/actor Jon Anderson. He left this world in the preferred method: Peacefully in his sleep of no apparent illness. This happened five days before his 95th birthday and 11 days after 300 closest friends had gathered to celebrate him. His combination of meticulous classicism and gay sensibility makes him one of America’s greatest artists ever. Cadmus was a true “magic realist”.

He was born in NYC into a family of commercial artists. He attended art classes at the National Academy Of Design when he was just 15 years old. Cadmus took advertising work until 1931 when he began studying at the Art Students League where he met artist Jared French. The pair of painters became boyfriends. French urged Cadmus to give up on commercial art. In 1931, Cadmus did the first of a series of paintings of French. The painting, Jerry, shows French holding a copy of James Joyce‘s Ulysses, which had been banned in the USA for being obscene.

cadmus French

Cadmus and French went to Europe, as most American painters did at the time, and settled on the island of Majorca. Cadmus painted a pair of his most noted early works, YMCA Locker Room  and The Bicyclists (later owned by songwriter Cole Porter) during this period. After their return to NYC in 1933, Cadmus went to work for the Public Works Of Art Project, a part of FDR‘s  WPA program.

cadmus FLEET

He became an unlikely cause célèbre  in 1934, when the US Navy brass went berserk over The Fleet’s In!, a glorious epic depiction of uniformed sailors on shore leave that included prostitutes & a gay pickup. The painting led the Secretary Of The Navy, Claude Swanson, to remove it from an important WPA art show. But, because of that controversy, Cadmus’ first show, held at Washington DC’s Corcoran Galleries, attracted huge crowds and all his painting sold. Cadmus remarked six decades later:

“I owe that admiral a very large sum!”.

The Fleet’s In! was kept from public view until 1981. It is now available for you to see at The Navy Art Gallery in DC. Conservatives still find it shocking; the tight, butt and crotch clinging clothing on the sailors is far from subtle.

In 1937, French left Cadmus and married their mutual friend, photographer Margaret Hoening. The three of them stayed buddies. For the next  decade Cadmus and the Frenches summered on Fire Island and they formed a photographic collective called PaJaMa (Paul, Jared, Margaret). Their photographs documented the beginnings of the gay culture of  the island. French left this world in 1988 at his home in Rome where he had lived for two decades. His NY Times obituary failed to mention Cadmus.

Cadmus continued to shock the stodgy public. A mural commissioned by the US Postal Service was rejected for being “unsuitable for a public building”. In 1939, Sailors And Floozies, another painting depicting drunken sailors, was removed from San Francisco’s Golden Gate International Exhibition. The same year, a mural done for the Richmond, Virginia post office,  The Rescue Of Captain John Smith By Pocahontas, had to be retouched because it showed the bare butts and bulging crotches of male Native Americans figures, although showing Pocahontas’ tits proved to be no problem.

The 1930s and 1940s were Cadmus’ most successful years despite, or because of, the controversies. His social life included glamorous parties with his circle of famous gay friends: W.H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood, Edith Sitwell, and E.M. Forster.

Cadmus had love affairs with the great photographer George Platt Lynnes, for whom Cadmus was a frequent model, and Lincoln Kirstein, founder of NYC Ballet, and with fellow painter George Tooker.

Cadmus possessed perfect posture, a lifelong lovely full head of hair and piercing blue eyes. He was as luminous and engaging as his paintings. From everything I have read about Cadmus, he was generous and he sincerely cared about other people, which may sound like a small thing, but it is actually rather rare among artists of his caliber.

Cadmus:

Edith Sitwell said: `A gentleman is never unintentionally rude,’  I don’t think a gentleman should ever be rude under any circumstances.”

I can’t help but wonder how amazing it would have been to have been a member of his circle.

#BornThisDay: Queen Christina Of Sweden

christina-jpg

Painting by David Beck (1650)

December 18, 1626Christina, Queen Of Sweden

“It is a far greater happiness to obey no one than to rule the whole world.”

In 1626, a Swedish Queen was born and I am not talking about that guy in the kitchen section of Ikea. Her name was Christina and from the moment of her birth, she confounded sexual and gender stereotypes.

Christina’s father, the king, had hoped for a male royal heir, and he raised her as a boy. She was tutored in politics, language and science and was trained to become an expert at using a musket and a world-class equestrian.

When she was only six-years-old Christina succeeded her father, King Gustav II Adolph, after he bit the big one at the Battle Of Lützen. In 1644, on her 18th birthday, she was declared an adult and she began to rule Sweden. By this time she was as educated as any male heir would have been and was fluent in eight languages besides Swedish, including English, German, French, Italian and Arabic.

As an adult, she still had no interest in fashion and adopted mannish styles of clothing. She wore men’s shoes for the sake of convenience and never combed her hair. It was said about her: “She walked like a man, sat and rode like a man, and could eat and swear like the roughest soldiers”. She ignored traditional feminine interests and wrote in her memoir: “ I feel an insurmountable distaste for marriage” and “I feel nothing for all the things that females talked about and did”.

Christina continued to pursue her love of culture, literature and learning while spending most of her time with her BFF, Ebba Sparre, whom she referred to as “Belle” while loudly praising her beauty and extraordinary mind. Christina even introduced Ebba to others as her “bed-fellow”.

In 1649, Queen Christina announced that she had no intention of ever marrying, and in summer 1654, after 20 years on the throne, she abdicated in favor of her cousin Charles Gustav and immediately left Sweden on horseback wearing man’s clothing.

Christina travelled to Germany and then to Holland before settling in Italy, converted to Catholicism during her trip, and arriving in Rome through the Porta del Popolo in a carriage designed by the great artist/archirect Gian Lorenzo Bernini who went on to become her lifelong pal. During her journey, she kept on writing letters to Sparre telling her that she would always love her.

Except for one very short visit return visit to Sweden in 1660 upon the death of King Charles X, Christina never returned to her country of birth.

Christina’s dykeishnss did not end with the way she dressed. She had affairs with many women during her lifetime. Betides her beloved Sparre, there was lovely pro golfer Gabrielle de Rochechouart de Mortemart; Rachel, the niece of Diego Teixeira Sampayo, a wealthy Portuguese Jew; and popular singer Angelina Giorgino.

Her life story is pretty darn interesting and too full of stories about her on again/off again relationship with Pope Alexander VII who described Christina as: “A queen without a realm, a Christian without faith, and a woman without shame“, along with four other Popes, for me to go into depth. Interestingly, she became a leader of the Baroque Theatre and Musical scenes, even building her own theatre in Rome, which featured presentations with female singers and actors, defying The Church, where such things were forbidden.

Here is where it gets interesting for me; Queen Christina was portrayed by Greta Garbo in the aptly titled film Queen Christina (1933). It is one of the first films with a main character who is trans, or non-heterosexual, or non-gender-binary, or whatever we call it nowadays. For its time it is a fascinating study of a lesbian onscreen, and of what films were able to get away with before the Hays Code.

queen-c

The film, directed by Rouben Mamoulian, with a screenplay by H. M. Harwood, takes care to hint subtly at Christina’s real-life queerness. The historical evidence mounted so high that in 1965 an archaeological undertaking was commissioned to explore the possibility of Queen Christina being intersex. The results were inconclusive. It is particularly interesting that this part of Christina’s life is included, while less controversial details of her life are fabricated or exaggerated for the film.

The most famous scene in Queen Christina is when Garbo’s Queen kisses a duchess firmly on the lips in a good-morning greeting. You can tell by Garbo’s gorgeous face and her strong acting technique, exactly what this relationship is all about.

And, there is this exchange, between the Chancellor and the Queen:

Chancellor: “But your majesty! You cannot die an old maid!”

Queen Christina: “I have no intention to, Chancellor. I shall die a bachelor!”

In the days before the implementation of the Hays Production Code in 1934, filmmakers had more freedom and artistic control over their work, and many plots, scenes, and situations that seem like they would have been controversial for the era were often depicted before the Code. After the Hays Code went into effect, there were almost no outward expression of homosexuality, because the Hays Code stipulated that “sex perversion (homosexuality) or any inference to it is strictly forbidden”. The first known girl-on-girl onscreen kiss occurred in 1930 in Marlene Dietrich’s Morocco.

In Queen Christina, Garbo’s compelling portrayal of the Queen is striking in its physicality, with a cat-like stride, slumped shoulders and decidedly masculine voice. This was not the Garbo that her fans were used to. Interestingly, it seems to be an outward expression of Garbo’s own gayness, which was just barely a secret in Hollywood. She had affairs with many women over the years, including Mercedes de Acosta, whose correspondence with Garbo was released in 2000.

Queen Christina is a unique film with a unique place in Hollywood history. It is not just as an early expression of gayness on film, but also as a veiled hint at the sexuality of Hollywood’s biggest star. It is considered one of the best of the 1930’s and probably Garbo’s best performance. But it only takes Queen Christina’s story up to the point just after her abdication. In The Abdication (1974), with Liv Ullmann, Christina arrives in the Vatican and falls in love with her champion, Cardinal Azzelino. In this one they leave out the gay stuff. Last year’s The Girl King directed by Mika Kaurismäki and written by Michel Marc Bouchard, strikes the right balance  with a lot of focus on the romance, and chemistry between Christina and Ebba. There is even a firelit love scene.

Queen Christina is the subject of  five operas, including Jacopo Foroni‘s Cristina, Regina di Svezia (1849).

The real Queen Christina abdicated life on Earth in spring of 1689. She left her massive library and exquisite art collection to the Vatican, because they needed more books and artwork. She was buried in the crypt beneath St. Peter’s Basilica and has a prominent monument on display there in her honor. Queen Christina is one of only three women to be so honored in St. Peter’s.

#RIP: Actress & Socialite, Zsa Zsa Gabor

Zsa Zsa Gabor
Zsa Zsa Gabor actress and one of the first people in the 20th century to be famous for being famous, died in Los Angeles today. Her friend and former publicist, Edward Lozzi, told USA Today said,

She did not suffer fools well. Zsa Zsa Gabor was one tough cookie. Her beautiful lips and mouth would also be her worst enemy when and if she turned on the verbal machine gun. Most of her problems originated from that beautiful mouth.

Zsa Zsa Gabor will always be an American icon and the klieg in the Gabor-Hilton dynasty.“

Gabor had been in ill health since the fall in July 2010. She had hip replacement surgery afterward but returned to the hospital several times for treatment of swelling and clots. Most of her right leg had been amputated.

Zsa Zsa was from a time when “socialite” was not a bad name. Despite a film career far from illustrious, she became a staple on television often appearing as herself. Her famous retort, “dahlink” was her signature term of affection.

She was born Sari Gabor in Budapest, Hungary in 1917, the middle of three sisters. Magda and Eva also were actresses and socialites; Eva and Zsa Zsa were often confused and starred on TV’s Green Acres. Eva died in 1995 and Magda in 1997.

Beginning in the 1950s through the 1980s, Gabor was a frequent guest on TV. She was glamorous, quick-witted and not afraid to make fun of herself or her nine marriages (including to Conrad Hilton, Paris Hilton’s great-grandfather), seven divorces and one annulment.

A man in love is incomplete until he has married — then he’s finished.

“I’m a marvelous housekeeper. Everytime I leave a man, I keep his house!””

In later years, Gabor appeared as herself in The Beverly Hillbillies (1993) and A Very Brady Sequel (1996) but her legal troubles kept her name in the headlines. In June 2005, she and her husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt, sued Gabor’s only child, Francesca Hilton, accusing her of fraud.

Despite a luke warm movie career, a crazy personal life and much public legal wrangling, Gabor remained a celebrity for decades, a singular personality known by one name.

Zsa Zsa Gabor was 99.

14681668_1276713742371292_5017481575727930508_n
China Machado moved to Paris and found work modelling for Givenchy. She was asked to model for Balenciaga, but he was out of town so they sent her to Givenchy instead.

They thought I was filling-in for a sick girl, so they grabbed me, put me in clothes, and threw me into the room where they were showing the collection. I barely knew anything about walking like a model, so I just copied the girl in front of me. At the end of the show, gorgeous Givenchy comes up to me and says,

‘Would you like to be in the cabine?’

—that’s what they called the group of models who worked for the house. That’s how it all started.“

China Machado was born in Shanghai, China. Her Portuguese father was from Macau, her maternal grandmother is from Goa. Her father met her mother in Hong Kong. At the age of 19, she met the Spanish bullfighter, Luis Miguel Dominguín. She moved with him to Rome, where she had bit-roles in films. After the relationship ended, she changed her first name to China (pronounced CHEE-na) and later worked for Christian Dior and Balenciaga. She became the highest-paid runway model in Europe, earning $1,000 a day.

In 1957, she married the actor Martin LaSalle. and the couple settled in New York City where Machado met Diana Vreeland. It was through Vreeland she developed a very close friendship with photographer, Richard Avedon. She called him the,

great mentor in her life.”

Avedon called her,

probably the most beautiful woman in the world. It was 1958, and the publishers were saying, ‘We can’t put this girl in the magazine [Harper’s Bazaar]. Everyone in the South will quit subscriptions and no one will want to advertise with us!’”

But they were published in February 1959, because—and I only found this out 20 years later—Dick had threatened to quit [his contract] if they didn’t use them.“

Machado’s modeling success opened the door for generations of models of ethnicity, from Iman to Naomi Campbell…

Machado worked for Avedon exclusively for three years before he got her a job as Harper’s Bazaar‘s Senior Fashion Editor where, eventually, she became the Fashion Director and ventured into other endeavors in publishing, fashion, and television. In 1989 she was added to the International Best Dressed List.

I was lucky enough to be a Facebook friend of hers, along with nearly 5,000 other fashion editors, photographers and admirers. She posted these photos here in the last several months along with this this quote in November just after the election of Donald Trump,

“I am an American, I love this country. I immigrated to this country in 1960. It has given me everything! The American people gave me kindness, a career, a warm welcome and most of all my American family. Three generations… Please do not change…..This is the America I know.”

China died today at Stony Brook University Hospital, one week before her 88th birthday.

Good News: North Carolina’s Hateful Bathroom Bill Will Be Repealed TOMORROW

8cb4b7-20160504-north-carolina-bathroom-protesters

North Carolina Governor-elect Roy Cooper said today that legislative leaders have promised a special session Tuesday to repeal the controversial House Bill 2, known as HB2, or the “bathroom bill.”

The bill, you’ll remember, requires transgender people to use restrooms corresponding with the sex on their birth certificate in public buildings and excludes sexual orientation and gender identity from antidiscrimination protections.

Via MPR:

The passage of HB2 in March thrust North Carolina into a national debate on transgender rights and harmed the state economically. The state missed out on new jobs as companies declined to expand in the state, while cancellations of concerts and conventions exacted a toll. And in a huge symbolic blow to the basketball-crazy state, the NCAA and ACC relocated events.

Monday’s surprising events began in the morning when the Charlotte City Council voted to undo a local nondiscrimination law enacted in early 2016. That ordinance, Republicans legislators say, challenged social norms and spurred them to pass HB2.

“Senate Leader Phil Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore assured me that as a result of Charlotte’s vote, a special session will be called for Tuesday to repeal HB2 in full,” Cooper said in a statement, adding: “I hope they will keep their word to me.”

A statement this morning from pissy-pants outgoing Governor Pat McCrory‘s press secretary, read,

“This sudden reversal with little notice after the gubernatorial election sadly proves this entire issue originated by the political left was all about politics and winning the governor’s race at the expense of Charlotte and our entire state.”

Jeremy Simmons, producer of the upcoming Gender Revolution on Nat Geo, describes a prescient visit to the pre-wartorn city of Aleppo.

“In 2010, I was in Syria shooting a shopping show called Man Shops Globe. We ended the second season in Syria, at one of the oldest and largest markets in the world – Aleppo.
Our local fixer said to me one day, as we were leaving the market, “You cant tell, but everything is about to change here. Its going to get very very bad.” It was very matter of fact. Just a throw in. Almost like she was giving me directions. Then she quickly changed the subject. We stopped for ice cream and watched the sun set on the citadel. We discussed textiles. Soaps. Tea sets. Shooting schedules. Happy talk for happy people.

“Why did she bring it up if she wasn’t willing to talk about it? Maybe she was scared of who might be listening

“Or maybe the time for explaining was over and it was time to run.

“The war began the following year, and yes, she did escape to London.

“The images on the left are pictures I shot that day- in the market, and at a cafe by the citadel for ice cream. The images on the right are ripped from the internet- and represent what these places look like today.”
