It’s not 100% successful but as an experiment it’s fun to see the synchronicity between Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” and Judy Garland’s “Get Happy”. The Garland footage is from the film Summer Stock and matches up quite nicely in parts. Feel free to fast forward through the beginning text and skip the whole thing if Happy is working your last nerve. Me, I’m not bothered.

Let’s escape for a few minutes, shall we? The legendary Marlon Brando first came to Tetiaroa while filming Mutiny on the Bounty over 50 years ago. He was taken by the island’s unspoiled beauty and the sense of peace it gave him. He fell in love with Polynesian way of life – and his leading lady Tarita – and wanting to escape Hollywood, he resolved to find a way to own this piece of paradise. He bought the whole island in 1967 for about $270,000 and he was convinced that this place could bring good to the whole planet. It became his life’s mission. In 1999 he asked Richard Bailey, a long-time resident of Tahiti who had created some of the region’s finest resorts, to help him come up with a plan that would help him achieve his dream. Together they pursued a vision of creating the world’s first post-carbon resort — an island where new technologies would enable a self-sustaining luxury environment for hotel guests and invited scientists to do research. (Like pumping cold seawater through pipes to cool the entire resort) The Brando was born. In the current issue of Depatures magazine, Ned Zeman writes an fascinating cover story that goes in depth about the history of the project and Brando’s love of Tetiaroa. Film exec Mike Medavoy met Brando while collaborating on Apocalypse Now and The Missouri Breaks, was friends with the actor until his death;
“Tetiaroa was Marlon’s way to get away from all the things you and I do every single day in Hollywood—talking to people, constantly moving. I always remember the e-mail he sent when I was given a star on Hollywood Boulevard. I called him up, and I said, ‘Marlon, they’ve asked me to get a couple of my friends to write a nice letter about me.’ And he wrote me a letter that read: ‘I’m going to be laying on a beach in Tetiaroa. I’m going to be looking at the stars and thinking about all the birds shitting on your star. You don’t need a star to tell you who you are.’”
That quote pretty much sums up Brando’s attitude about Hollywood and fame and his love for this island. And beyond that, 10 years after his passing, this destination looks to be THE honeymoon hotspot on the planet – that is, if you have $2500 a night. Whether you have the dough or not, you can fantasize here, anyway…

Legendary legend Candis Cayne plays the man-hungry hussy Vivianna in the indie slasher film, Crazy Bitches, which debuts at San Francisco’s Victoria Theatre on June 26. The actress and outspoken trans rights activist says says there’s a refreshing twist to the role “[Director] Jane (Clark) really gets me. She is the only person to ever really cast me as a girl,” Cayne tells HuffPo. “There’s never any mention of trans issues or any of that kind of thing.” Which is incredibly cool. Go, Candis.

Indeed, while the film about seven sorority sisters who reunite for a weekend getaway which turns into a bloodbath features strong lesbian themes — and the requisite gay character, naturally — Clark allows Cayne to move past the Hollywood (and perhaps viewers’) perception of her as “the trans actress.” It’s a chance which, until now, has proven elusive, Cayne says.
“Not that I mind being a spokesperson [for the trans community] and doing that, because I don’t,” shares the beauty, who has been open about her gender identity throughout her career, “I love it, but I feel I’m definitely typecast as ‘the transsexual.’”
“It’s not even that I’m even excluded from roles, so to speak,” she shares, “But because I have name-recognition, I’m not even thought of to play in those roles.”
Fortunately, Cayne has a team of professionals who believe in her and are taking steps to change the way casting professionals think of her as an actress. Her agent actively pitches her for roles “outside the box” — “You know, the kooky girl-next-door type,” she says — but has had limited success to date.
That could begin to change, thanks to Clark, Cayne notes. The director has several upcoming projects in which she plans to work. And, one role at a time, she hopes to change the tide.
“It hasn’t happened yet, but you never say ‘never,’” Cayne says. “I’m going to keep trying. I love acting. I love going to those places, so it’s a joy to me.”
Crazy Bitches, directed by Jane Clark and starring Liz McGeever, Cathy DeBuono, Andy Gala, Nayo Wallace and Candis Cayne, screens June 26 at San Francisco’s Victoria Theatre as part of the Frameline Film Festival, 9:30pm.

The legendary Lily Tomlin talks to PrideSource about Beyoncé selling sex to toddlers and calling it feminism. Ouch. Even more cutting: The fact that she says she just doesn’t care enough about Beyoncé to be conversant about her. Read the interview after the jump.As a feminist trailblazer, what do you think of modern examples of feminism, like Beyonce and “Girls,” for instance?
Well, how do you represent that? What does that mean to you?
Yeah, well, I guess that’s what I’m asking you.
(Laughs) You mean Beyonce’s total use of her body? Is that what you mean?
Yeah, a lot of people think of Beyonce as a feminist, as somebody who embraces herself as a powerful woman – she’s even called herself a “modern-day feminist” – and I was curious to know your thoughts on that.
Yeah, well, I think that’s great, and what can I say? She is a pretty popular woman and she’s married to a very powerful man, but she’s still selling sex. She’s selling a lot of sex to teeny-boppers. I don’t know. Who are her fans? Everybody?
Everybody loves Beyonce, Lily, and if you don’t there’s “The Beygency,” which is, according to “Saturday Night Live,” a secret government agency who takes down anyone who doesn’t.
Oh, shit. I like her! I don’t dislike her! But I don’t pay any attention to that because – I mean, she’s fantastically beautiful and dances, but, you know, it’s very suggestive. If I was a 10-year-old, I would try to emulate her like most 10-year-olds do.
For me, young girls are too sexually available! I got in trouble with the show “Girls” because I was doing a junket and 80 people come through from different publications or networks or whatever to interview you. So, this girl comes in and she goes, “What do you think of ‘Girls’? I said, “I haven’t really watched it that much.” That was the truth!
So, I shouldn’t even talk about Beyonce because, hard as it is to believe and as much as she is present in the culture, I’m not terribly conversant with Beyonce. If you played her songs, I wouldn’t necessarily recognize them. I’m familiar with her image and how incredibly vivacious and sexual she is to watch, so I just chalk it up to the culture. I don’t pay any attention to it anymore.
The culture is so sexualized with girls and women. I was in a recording studio and a little girl who was about 4 years old was watching TV, and somebody’s dancing on the TV in very elaborate sexually overt dance steps and the little girl goes, “Oh, she’s hot.” I’m thinking, this is a 4-year-old!
She should be thinking about playing with her Barbies – wait, no, even Barbies are sexualized, so never mind.
(Laughs) She should be thinking about penetrating the Barbie or something, or bringing Barbie and Ken – I don’t know what she should be thinking about! But stop it right now! You’re gonna put words in my mouth! The whole Beyonce thing is gonna come after me. They’ll send Solange after me. I’ll be in the elevator and they’ll beat the hell out of me.
Jay-Z and Beyonce are their own thing. I mean, they come swathed in a culture that is wide and deep, and that’s great. They make a lot of money. I don’t know what else they do. I don’t know about them.
Listen, I was one of those people all through the ’60s. Because rock ‘n’ roll was a male-dominated culture, as a feminist, I railed against it. I railed against the fact that girls were used sexually, that they would just follow guys all over the planet. I cannot defend my state of my mind, that’s what I was thinking at the time. Look, when the Rolling Stones had that album “Black and Blue And Lovin’ It” – whatever it was called (editor’s note: it was called “Black and Blue”) – it showed a woman bound, sitting on a chair with her hands behind her back. She’s black and blue, she has bruises all over her. I mean, this was part of marketing!
I got into a big fuss with someone. I had a hairdresser on a movie and she started railing against these teenage girls, the way they went around and behaved. I said, “They’re an effect of the culture. Why do you support a culture?” She threw a hairbrush at me. She got so mad. She was mad at the girls, she was blaming me, the victim, the subject. I said, “How do you like the idea of a little 12-year-old girl down there at Tower Records going through those bins and seeing this cover with this girl bound and black and blue? The Stones, a very powerful group, is extolling this as the ideal feminist image, like, “Yeah, yeah, this is how she should be: black and blue and loving it.”
What’s the ideal feminist image to you?
There is none. I’m totally existential. I have no investment in the society or anything. Anything that could happen – I’m way too beyond that mark to think that I’m gonna change it.

Welcome back to another season of adventures with Big Freedia, the Queen Diva! Today we find Freedia at the South by Southwest Music Festival representing bounce music like no one else can. Freedia and the shake team have fifteen minutes on stage to make an impression among the hundreds of other acts in Austin. It’s a bouncy beginning when Freedia’s DJ can’t get the music going- and the clock is ticking. Will the needle hit the record? Can Freedia release her wiggle for thousands of potential new fans or will the Diva Explode?

While one of their flatmate’s was away, two super-cute goofballs spent three weeks blowing up a couple thousand balloons and putting them in his bedroom. His reaction when he gets home and opens the door is pretty priceless. I think I’m in love.

Home video of a swamp boat tour in Louisiana showing a guide in the water feeding chicken and marshmallows to the local ‘gators from his mouth. FROM HIS MOUTH. The video has attracted the attention of local and state officials who are disturbed by what they saw. To say the least. Now, of course, alligators aren’t crocodiles, they’re more lazy than ornery, but still this seems to be tempting fate. I guess the bigger question, though, is: Alligators like marshmallows? Who knew? They accept the mission, becoming two of the least qualified men ever to assassinate – or interview – the most dangerous man on earth. Pretty nutty setup. But this is from the guys who brought you This Is the End and Neighbors – both surprising good movies – so I’m pretty excited. Not sure what Kim Jong-Un is going to think, however…
