November 20, 1942– In 1972, Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr. became the fifth-youngest Senator in USA history, and he went on to be Delaware’s longest-serving senator. He is also just about the best friend Gay People have ever had who has held a major Executive Branch office. His Presidential campaign in 2008 never quite gained the needed traction, but that upstart Democratic nominee Barack Obama selected him as his running mate.
Just as Biden’s political career was really beginning, he was dealt a devastating tragedy. A week before Christmas in 1972, Biden’s wife and his three children were involved in a dreadful automobile accident while shopping for a Christmas tree. It took the life of the young wife and his daughter, and severely injured both of his sons, Beau and Hunter. Biden was inconsolable, even suicidal. Biden:
“I began to understand how despair led people to just cash in; how suicide wasn’t just an option but a rational option. I felt God had played a horrible trick on me, and I was angry.”
With encouragement and support of his family, Biden decided to honor his commitment to the people of Delaware as their Senator. He skipped his swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol and took the oath of office from his sons’ hospital room. He wanted to spend time with his boys, so Biden continued to live in Wilmington, commuting to and from Washington DC each day by Amtrak train, something he did all the time he served in the Senate.
Biden married a second time in 1977, to Jill Jacobs, an educator. The couple had daughter, Ashley, born in 1981.
Spring of 2015, Biden suffered another devastating loss when his handsome son Beau, Attorney General of Delaware and a Major in the Delaware Army National Guard, was taken by brain cancer. He was just 46 years old and I think, would probably become a future President of The United State. Biden:
“Beau Biden was, quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known.”
I had only recently been declared in remission after my own cancer battle and I cried a bucket full of tears with the news of Beau Biden’s passing. Following this tragedy, I had still hoped Biden might make another try at running for the Presidency. But, I was mostly relieved that he put an end to the speculation a year ago. In the White House Rose Garden with his wife and President Obama by his side, Biden made his announcement:
“As my family and I have worked through the grieving process, I’ve said all along what I’ve said time and again to others, that it may very well be that the process by the time we get through it closes the window. I’ve concluded it has closed. While I will not be a candidate, I will not be silent. I intend to speak out clearly and forcefully, to influence as much as I can where we stand as a party and where we need to go as a nation.”
Beau Biden had asked him to consider a third try for the White House, but Biden refused to promise his son, but he promised to ask his aides to explore the possibility. He lived up to that promise.
At a Human Rights Campaign dinner last October, Biden was joined by former NBA player Jason Collins, the first openly gay athlete to play in the NBA, plus Blossom Brown, a transgender woman from Mississippi. All spoke out in favor of Equal Rights for everyone in our country.
Speaking at a celebration for the Supreme Court’s ruling on Marriage Equality, Biden spoke movingly of Gay Rights activists’ struggle, promising to fight for equal-protection laws for Gay Americans, and not-so-subtly tooted his own horn in helping marriage become legal for everyone.
“You left the Supreme Court absolutely no choice, no choice whatsoever, and I mean that. The very fact that we finally recognize that love is not a political matter, it’s a basic human right. The fact that we recognize that is because of you. You’ve changed the world in which my grandchildren will grow up.”
Biden always had a strong record in support of Gay Rights reaching back to his own teenage years:
“This has been a heroic battle. But it’s been based on this very simple proposition best expressed to me by my dad as a 17 year-old kid. I recall a time when my father and I witnessed two men kissing. I turned and looked at my dad, and I’ll never forget what he said: ‘Joey, they love each other. It’s simple’.”
He had been instrumental in helping appoint Justice Anthony Kennedy who cast that deciding vote in Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark Marriage Equality ruling.
There was also that famous moment on NBC’s Meet The Press in 2012, when Biden endorsed Same-Sex Marriage, reportedly frustrating Obama’s team who had also planned on announcing the President’s own support for Marriage Equality, but he beat them to it by three weeks. He will always be remembered as President Obama’s conscience on LGBTQ rights.
It’s easy to forget now, but for most of his first term, Obama was elusive on the subject if Marriage Equality. After working on the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in late 2010, Obama stepped away from further discussion on Gay Rights, declining to commit to full equality, even after the New York State’s Marriage Equality battle had been won. In early 2012, gay Americans waited anxiously for Obama to “evolve” on the issue, but he said nothing. As the 2012 election approached, it appeared alarmingly likely that Obama would once again campaign on a Non-Equality platform.
Three days after Biden declared his support for marriage equality on national television, Obama did the same. Never before had a POTUS endorsed the right of same-sex couples to wed.
I think Obama would have eventually championed Marriage Equality. He had kept hidden his actual views for fear of political blowback. But, Biden expedited the process at the perfect moment, turning the 2012 election into a referendum on Marriage Equality and Obama’s victory all the more special.
Biden’s own work had focused heavily on the fight to grant equal protection to individuals in the workplace and housing. He has pushed the Obama Administration to expand equal-protection laws for gay Americans in those states that do not explicitly bar discrimination based on sexuality. Biden:
“There are still 32 states where marriage can be recognized in the morning, and you can still be fired in the afternoon. I want you to know that this next door will be a hell of a lot easier to open.”
In typical Biden “speak”, he has noted that the vocal LGBTQ community has helped many straight people feel more comfortable about supporting Gay Rights.
“Homophobia also intimidated millions of straight people who didn’t have a homophobic bone in their body. They are now free as well.”
“You don’t owe me or the President any thanks. We owe you. It’s hard for me to imagine the sense of accomplishment Gay Americans must feel.”
The Vice President continues to urge gay people to keep working for full equality. He has stated that he believes that most Americans support proposed protections against housing, employment and services contained in much disputed, now dead, Equality Act. But, he also believes that LGBTQ Americans still face discrimination.
“Most American people are already with you. Look at the numbers. Oh, there are homophobes still left. Most of them are running for President, I think.”
Poor Joe, it has to pain him to see the homophobes grab the White House.
“We lost because an awful lot of hard-working Americans who live in areas where we did not pay much attention to. Barack Obama won these people. They are not racist. They did not vote for the Democrats this time.”
Biden said this week that Globalization has fundamentally altered the economic outlook for these voters, especially blue-collar white American men, who are feeling left behind by the political process.
“For the first time in recent memory, this is one section of American population where the life expectancy has gone down. It is white American men between the age of 40 and 55. They have the highest suicide rate in America. Because they do not know how to deal with the new incredible changes that is taking place in the world.”
This week, across that Internet thing, there has been a wide range of reactions to the election of you-know-who and his extremely homophobic Veep. Many people expressed grief at Hillary Clinton’s loss and rage against Rapey Von Tinyfingers’ ascension. But there has also been a humorous approach to this dreadful state of things: memes. The series of hilarious Biden/Obama have helped lift our spirits just a bit.

Biden: “I wanna freak Mike Pence out”
Obama: “But why?”
Biden: “Just roll with it”
Over the past eight years, Biden has proven to be a gaffe-prone but lovable and valuable member of the Obama administration. This week, we have fallen in love with him all over again, launching new memes every day. Today, my feed was loaded with Biden/Obama Hamilton memes.
Biden: “Pulled it off.”
Obama: “Which one?”
Biden: “Convinced Pence seeing Hamilton was mandatory for getting his security clearance.”
The giggles make us conscious of the fact that on January 20th the country will also be saying goodbye to Vice President Joe Biden and in a real sense, to the nation as we know it.

Robert and Cortney Novogratz are lifestyle designers that famously have 7 beautiful kids. They used to live around the corner from me in NYC and now they have a castle in L.A.. They’ve kindly bought my work for projects before and just commissioned a painting for a new Greenwich Village townhouse they designed that I delivered last week. I just saw them at their book signing at Rizzoli in NYC where I picked up my copy of their latest project. It’s a lushly illustrated book called Beachside Bohemian all about their beach retreat in Trancoso, Brazil. Robert has said about the place and house,
“Years ago, a design friend brought me to Trancoso. It was such a magical place. Beautiful. Not over developed and with amazing beaches, nature and wonderful people. It was so different and felt instantly right.
The tree house is probably the best part of the house. It is very unique in comfort and design as well as more private than the rest of the home. I am also pleased with how the stone shower turned out.”
We try go to the beach everyday. Nothing is better than a fun lunch on the beach with a bottle of wine or two. Just hanging out with family and friends and soaking up the beautiful surroundings and atmosphere.“
Looks like heaven to me. This is the same area of Brazil (and the same builder) where Anderson Cooper has his place too, you know. (See pics here.) So, now is it becoming a hot spot? Well, before it’s gets TOO overrun, I should take a look, right? It says right there on the cover of their book “for family and friends” so, do you think it’s tacky if I hint in public about an art trade for a little beach time at Casa Novogratz? Nah. That’s what friends are for…

As if being New Yorkers isn’t embarrassing enough for the whole city (and the country) according to the New York Post, future First Lady Melania Trump and son Barron will NOT be moving to the White House after Emperor Cheeto‘s inauguration in January.
Mom and 10-year-old son are staying put at their gaudy Trump Tower penthouse so that Barron can continue attending his private school (which costs around $40,000 a year) on the Upper West Side. A source close to Trump’s transition team told the Post,
“Melania is extremely close to Barron, and they have become closer during the campaign. The campaign has been difficult for Barron, and she is really hoping to keep disruption to a minimum.”
Another source said Melania will travel to the White House as needed, but that her primary focus is Barron.
“Melania is very supportive of her husband and is fully on board of doing everything that’s needed as first lady.“
There is a possibility that Melania and Barron may move to the White House at the end of the school year, but no plans as of yet.
Of course, the decision to remain in NYC will increase the security presence around Trump Tower — an effort which involves both the Secret Service and the NYPD. Jim Reese, a former Delta Force commander and president of TigerSwan, a global security company said,
“That building is going to become the White House of New York. The Secret Service is going to have to keep that whole area cordoned off so that some wacko can’t get close and detonate a car bomb.”
At a joint NYPD, Secret Service and City Hall news conference Friday it was announced that strict security measures around Trump Tower will remain in place, with two of the five lanes on Fifth Avenue between West 56th and 57th streets closed because of barriers.
Following the election, the whole area around Trump Tower has turned into a traffic nightmare, with West 56th Street closed to traffic between Fifth and Madison avenues. (I’ve experienced it first-hand. Nightmare is NOT overstating what it is…)

You saw yesterday’s post about Mike Pence getting booed by the audience at Friday night’s performance of Hamilton, yes? And at the end of the show, cast members addressed Pence’s appearance. Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, the nation’s third vice president, said,
“Vice-president elect Mike Pence, we welcome you and truly thank you for joining us at Hamilton American Musical. We sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. We truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us…”
For some reason, Emperor Cheeto was VERY upset by this moment of free speech in the American theater and said that the cast should apologize to Pence and that,
“The Theater must always be a safe and special place…”
Well, Lady Bunny has a bit in her new show, Transjester now playing at The Stonewall Inn, that addresses this very issue HEAD ON. Let’s watch, shall we?

Diesel partnered with a German company called “About You” and hired two super hot trans fashion models, Benjamin Melzer and Loiza Lamers, as the faces of their new campaign.

So Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke supposedly called pretty-boy underwear mogul/soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo a “faggot” in the locker room after this weekend’s game. Cadena COPE, a Spanish radio station, reports that Cristiano responded by saying
“A faggot, yes. But a very rich one, bastard!”
If the report is true, it marks the first time that Cristiano has publicly acknowledged his sexuality.

Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, David Hyde Pierce, Dylan Walsh, Rob Reiner, T.R. Knight, Phylicia Rashad, Richard Schiff, NCIS favorite Pauley Perrette, and Mary McCormack.

“When We Rise” — hailing from “Milk” scribe Dustin Lance Black — chronicles the personal and political struggles, setbacks and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBT men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the U.S. Civil Rights movement from its turbulent infancy in the 20th century to the once unfathomable successes of today. The period piece tells the history of the gay rights movement, starting with the Stonewall Riots in 1969.
Pearce will star as LGBT activist Cleve Jones, who joined the gay liberation movement in 1972 and was befriended by pioneer gay rights leader Harvey Milk. Parker will play women’s rights leader Roma Guy, who co-founded the San Francisco Women’s Building, and Griffiths will play her wife, social justice activist Diane, who joined the Women’s Movement in the 1970s in San Francisco. Williams will portray African-American community organizer Ken Jones, and Aquino will play the role of transgender activist Cecilia Chung.
Goldberg will play Pat Norman, the first openly gay employee of the San Francisco Health Department; O’Donnell will play Del Martin, co-founder of the first lesbian organization in the country; Denis O’Hare will play Foster, openly gay Democratic party organizer; and Pierce will play Cleve’s (Pearce) father, Dr. Jones.

Some of the founding members of the Bushwig drag festival in Brooklyn (including Merrie Cherry, Horrorchata, AJA, Dahlia Sin and Untitled Queen) and their allies have come together in a photoshoot for a serious stance against being underrepresented as queer people of color, in their “communities”, and across America. The image, created by photographer Fred Attenborough, was inspired by diversity covers like Vanity Fair’s 2014 Hollywood Issue and Candy Magazine’s transgender The Role Models cover 2014-2015. “I want to make sure everyone knows how beautiful my QPOC friends are”, says Attenborough. In this current climate, safe spaces are very important. The photoshoot makes a safe space for us to play and be free to be ourselves. Sometimes, the time we spent together is more important to me that the final result.” Check it out below, and what some of the queens had to say about the project. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Hermione Granger famously schools her classmates by proclaiming: “Fear of the name increases fear of the thing itself.” She, of course, was referring to the self-hating Dark Lord Voldemort. Unfortunately, after November 8th, truth is stranger than fiction because we ARE living in the Deathly Hallows now. I’ve found VAST comparisons in Trump’s regime to that of Voldemort’s “pure-blood only” ideology. Every morning (since November 8th), I scroll through the news headlines and my fear at times has consumed me, rotted me, and taken over my hopeful optimism.
When “alt-right” groups met in DC two days ago performing nazi salutes, I didn’t get afraid: I got angry.
These dumbasses – along with 197 other dumbasses – known as the National Policy Institute (AKA Nazis) met in DC at Maggiano’s Little Italy in DC two nights ago to celebrate Trump’s victory. Excuse me for a sec:
What. In. The. Actual. Hell?! There are SO many levels of WRONG in this, but one thing’s for certain: YOU HAVE TO STOP BEING AFRAID AND START CALLING IT WHAT IT IS. Stop saying Bannon is “alt-right.” Stop saying an “alt-right” group met in DC at their “alt-right” dinner for their “alt-right” speech.
Say what it is:
Trump’s “win” emboldened white supremacists and “alt-righters” but the only way we can properly resist these hate groups is by starting – in MEDIA – to call them what they are: NAZIS.
Don’t believe me? Think I’m being “too extreme?” WATCH this and tell me this isn’t exactly what it is:
These Nazis put their Maggiano’s reservation under a different name, and upon finding out that Tila Tequila and her band of Nazis were dining there, Maggiano’s donated all their restaurant sales to an Anti-Defamation Group with the following statement:
Trump wants the cast of Hamilton to apologize to Pence, but what the country NEEDS is Trump to apologize for the countless hate crimes and for empowering Nazi groups to come out of the shadows.
Don’t normalize this and keep speaking out on these monsters.

An audible gasp was heard from the press corps covering the annual event as she walked the red carpet in her sparkling, barely-there Yousef Al-Jasmi dress. Has she ever looked better? Everything about this look is sheer (and I do mean sheer) perfection. The hair, the makeup, the bod, the gown. Her sister, Kourtney? Eh, not so much.
