JSJ: Hello gorgeous! So I just now watched your new show All My Gay Friends Are Getting Married for ABCDigital and I loveloveloved it!
Michelle Collins: Are the reviews in? You liked it?
I thought it was superfun! Why don’t you tell us a little bit about what it is, and how you came up with the idea…
Well I love hosting people, I love interviewing people, and who do I love more than my gay friends? I mean, truly, without them I would be like Howard Hughes peeing in jars [laughs]. I would have like three girlfriends and that would be it. No, I’m just kidding. But you know what I’m saying. So I discussed it with ABC and it just kind of came about that what’s a better way to celebrate then to interview these wonderful gay couples about their weddings. Its something that is just so new. And it’s something that has only been happening the past few years.
Everybody loves a wedding and everyone loves a good wedding story. So it seems that it is a perfect match.
Thats right! Listen, I love a wedding. In fact, I just invited myself to a wedding recently. I met these people at a brunch back in March and they were like “Yeah we’re getting married in Santa Barbara” and I was like “I’ll be there! When is it!?” and I went to it in August! [laughs]. I will worm my way into any nuptial. The thing is, with these couples (on the show) I didn’t know them before I interviewed them, so they were strangers to me. Which I actually thought was kind of fun. I get to learn every aspect of their lives, how they met, how they fell in love… And, of course, I’ve been watching Say Yes to the Dress for 10 years now, and there are rarely gay men on the show. Sometimes they have lesbian couples but that’s, like, a Very Special Edition – a Flintstones-meets-The Jetsons kind of thing – you know, very, very rare. So it was a nice way to learn about their stories because there really isn’t anything on TV or online that really does that at the moment.
Some of them were really touching, the first story with Jeff and Paul (Jeff Zarrillo and Paul Katami, the couple who overturned Prop 8 in the Supreme Court) talking about how they were coming down the Supreme Court steps and people were chanting “Thank You, Thank You”, I got a little teary eyed. It was a really sweet moment.
Michelle Collins: It’s interesting because initially I thought this show was gonna be so funny and constant laughs and then when I was sitting down with them it’s obviously not just that.
Right! They are a part of history!
Exactly. They are people who really believed in their cause. And to me, thats the best thing to listen to. I loved those touching moments when we were talking to the couples. Like Josh and Michael, the ones who got married in the south. One was a pastor, married with kids.
OMG! Yes! The couple from Nashville. LOVED THEM! When I saw Josh’s hair – that Farrah Fawcett ‘do – and the bejeweled cape, his blinded-out bag, I just am obsessed, absolutely obsessed with him!
I actually felt much less beautiful around him [laughs]. The woman who did my hair and makeup is also RuPaul’s HMU artist – which alone is worth doing the show – so I felt pretty good… and then he showed up and I was like “oh shit…” [laughs]. But they were so sweet. Having to come out to your entire congregation, when you are leading them, and then on top of that having them accept you. It was just a pretty special thing. I assume some churches or even religions wouldn’t be as accepting. It’s just a really nice thing. It shows that we are moving forward as a nation, slowly, but surely.
Almost all of the stories are over the top in their own ways. There were a lot of very ra-sha-sha, star-studded affairs. Like Danny and Aaron, who came in on the unicorn, I just loved that.
They were hysterical, those two. This show was also way for me to make friends [laughs]. I was in LA last month and I went out with Danny for some wine! I really wormed my way into making new friends.
Yeah, they all seem pretty A-list [laughs] and good people to know. At Danny and Aaron’swedding, for example, Joss Stone was the canter, John Legend sang, then J-Lo gave that shout out. And you know the couple, Jamal and Octavious, who got married on MTV, I saw Sonny from Days of Our Lives in the wedding in the background. So I was super- impressed with them too!
It’s interesting how, and I’m not going to say they run Hollywood, but they had some suspicious connections [laughs]. How they had John Legend just come rolling in. It’s like “Oh thats exciting”. A fun part of this show is also me having FOMO… of not knowing them before the wedding. I have so much fun at weddings, four tequilas in you’re like “she is so fun, where has she been our who life”. It really just describes my three favorite things in life; weddings, interviewing people, and fun gays!
Well, it’s a really fun series. I hope you’re doing more. Do you know anything about doing more episodes?
We are still waiting. There might be talk about doing another season. We would expand, if that happens, and bring in other diverse couples. We are really hoping a second season will come out of it for sure. There are so many people who need to tell their stories. We can’t just end with 5 episodes! In fact if anyone reading this has a fabulous gay wedding to share, tweet me @michcoll or Instagram me pictures of what I missed!
Thank you so much for you time. And please come visit us at WOW when you are in LA!
I would love to. Thank you!
