AHS Season 6 Premieres Tonight. So, What IS the Secret Theme? We Have Some Ideas…

screen-shot-2016-09-14-at-6-47-14-am
The sixth season of American Horror Story starts tonight, but audiences are still clueless about the theme. The show broke with tradition by not announcing the season’s title ahead of the first episode. So far, we’ve seen Hotel, Freak Show, Coven, Asylum… but co-creator Ryan Murphy has kept the theme tightly under wraps.

Here’s everything we think we know so far:

Jacob Artist

Jacob Artist

GAGA IS BACK (with some Murphy regulars)
After winning a Golden Globe for her performance in last year’s Hotel, Lady Gaga is back along with Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Matt Bomer and Wes Bentley.

NEW ADDITIONS
Cuba Gooding Jr has been rumored to be joining the cast, while Glee star Jacob Artist revealed on Instagram this week that he would be making an appearance…

IT’S ABOUT MIST
The new title is widely rumored to be “The Mist”, after this title briefly appeared on Rotten Tomatoes and TV Guide. The Mist is also the title of a 15-second teaser for season 6, which shows a mis-shapen, humanoid creature crawling along a set of railway tracks.

IT’S ABOUT CHARLES MANSON
Ryan Murphy has been saying that he wants “to do an entire season about the Manson case” since 2013, and some clues in the promotional material might support this theory.

tmz-croatoan-ahsIT’S ABOUT A LOST COLONIAL TOWN
The word “Croatoan” is seen carved into a tree in photos leaked from the show’s set. This refers to an eerie true mystery. The word appeared on a tree outside the remains of a 17th century colonial settlement of Roanoke in North Carolina, after all the inhabitants had disappeared. AHS has referenced early American history in previous seasons, most notably in Coven, which drew heavily on the Salem Witch Trials.

IT’S PROBABLY ABOUT CHILDREN
According to Murphy, the new season will feature “elements of children”. One teaser features a Children of the Corn-style scene of schoolchildren, working at desks in the middle of a cornfield; another shows a live doll; and another shows a family with a young girl in a prairie landscape.

UNLESS IT’S NOT…
FX has released more than 20 teasers for season six (see them all below) and all but one of them are intended to mislead the viewer. According to FX chief John Landgraf,

One is accurate, all the rest are misdirect.

We know THIS much, as Murphy said earlier this year,

Both things that we’re writing right now — we haven’t yet declared the winner — will have a different form than we’ve ever done, so we’re excited about that.

It’s been hinted that the new season would be

set in two time periods, but principally in the present.

You don’t have long to wait. American Horror Story season 6 premieres tonight on FX. In the meantime, here are all of the teasers you can search for clues.

Watch.

Breaking News! Tom Brady Has Never Had a Strawberry In His LIFE

screen-shot-2016-09-14-at-11-26-54-am

Stop the presses! This just in! A breathless interview with hunky footballer Tom Brady in The Cut notes that in addition to owning more pairs of Uggs “than you could ever imagine,” and recently getting a haircut, he has never TRIED a strawberry. Or coffee. Not once. Not ever. Not accidentally. Not inadvertently. Now, I’m not sure if this extends to strawberry Pop Tarts or strawberry strudel or strawberry Hubba Bubba bubble gum…. or coffee ice cream or coffee Jelly Bellies or coffee enemas… But I mean, really. THE MIND JUST REELS with the things he may be missing out on.

Here’s the exact quote.

“I’m 39 and I get to play football for a living. There are not a lot of people who get that chance,” he says, an even more wistful, contemplative twinkle clouding his eyes. “Part of that is because of the way that I treat my body.”

“Do you need to eat a cheeseburger every day to realize that you love a cheeseburger?” he ponders, Confucius-like. “Or could you eat it once a week … or once every two weeks … or once a month … or once every two months?” Tom Brady has learned that he doesn’t love strawberries or coffee by never having tried either at all, a commitment no mortal man could ever conceive of pulling off. “I’ve never eaten a strawberry in my life. I have no desire to do that.” Never? “Absolutely not.” Brady is magnificently laser-focused for a man who owns more UGGs than any person could ever imagine. “I don’t believe you could be a 39-year-old quarterback in the NFL and eat cheeseburgers every day. I want to be able to do what I love to do for a long time.”

Love it love it love it. This may be the BEST CELEBRITY INTERVIEW OF ALL TIME.

Read the whole thing here.

Interview With “Boys on the Inside” Filmmaker Elliat Graney-Saucke

0

WOW got to chat with Seattle-based filmmaker Elliat Graney-Saucke about her exciting and important new documentary “Boys on the Inside,” which chronicles the lives of a number of queer men and women while being incarcerated, and in the years after being released from prison. Elliat (seen in the above video discussing the film with the doc’s lead character Sebastian Rain) is currently completing the documentary, and her crowdfunding campaign for the film ends this coming Monday, September 19. Click here to learn more about how you can help with the film’s completion, and here’s our in-depth conversation with Elliat about “Boys on the Inside.”

What is the subject matter of “Boys on the Inside”?

“Boys on the Inside” is the first feature documentary about ‘boy’ identity in women’s prisons. The film follows a group of formerly (and currently) incarcerated individuals, ranging from transmen, to butches/tomboy girls, to feminine girls / femmes. The main character of the film is Sebastian Raine, a formerly incarcerated Latino transman who was incarcerated for a total of 8.5 years while he was struggling with addiction. As a character driven film, “Boys on the Inside” looks at the personal stories of life before, during and after prison, focusing on the butch/trans experiences of incarceration. There is much more negative attention given to ‘boy’ within the institution, where they are seen as predators (a very old homophobic stereotype of dykes/lesbians). The flip side of that story is also that ‘boys’ get a lot of attention within the prison population and there is a lot of status and privilege on that flip side… it’s really a unique story!

What motivated you to make this film?

The documentary began 8 years ago, in 2008, when I was shooting footage for a transitional arts-based program for people coming out of prison. The program was a test project that didn’t take off, but is based out of the long-standing prison arts program “Keeping the Faith/The Prison Project” (KTF) that has been run by Pat Graney Company for 25 years in Washington State (as well as nationally/internationally). My involvement in KTF began about 15 years ago, and I’ve been involved with everything from being on the documentary team to being the Program Coordinator. While working on KTF Transitions, it was the first time that I had been with a group of people from KTF on the outside (not in prison) and all these bizarre and intense stories started coming out! When people are locked up, they don’t have the space or freedom to talk with outsiders about the complexity of their experience. Learning more about, not only the people in this group of friends who served together, but also hearing about the gay culture and how ‘boys’ were treated – I felt very drawn towards documenting and better understanding these experiences. As a white queer femme filmmaker who has not been incarcerated but who has family members and friends who struggle with many of the issues within the film (from addiction, abusive relationships, incarceration, transphobia from cops, etc), it has been interesting project! This film has impacted me both on a personal and artistic level…and we haven’t even gotten into editing yet!

Who are the main protagonists of your documentary?

Sebastian Raine is the lead character; primarily because he is the person I know the best. He’s become a part of my family as someone close to my aunt, and so I’ve had a chance to hear a lot of his stories, from how he grew up with hells angels, drug use and abusive situations, to hearing about and witnessing his experiences in prison where he was labeled as a predator. I’ve also witnessed his journey dealing with institutionalization and working on building a better life for himself after prison, including working on his relationship to his estranged daughter and now with his ‘boy’ identified granddaughter, as well as his coming out as trans and beginning to take T (testosterone) 1 year ago. And all of these stories are central to the film.

Sarah, a Latina ‘boy’ currently based in Southern Oregon, has struggled with recidivism and is currently building a stable and sober life for herself near her mom. Involved in the film since the beginning, we’ve corresponded off and on between her stints in prison, and her mom and sister have also been super supportive and will likely be included in the film to address the family dynamics around both Sarah as a ‘boy’ and dealing with addiction.

Louise is a white butch ‘boy’ who has built herself up and is running a successful business in Seattle. Having served a shorter sentence and only having been locked up once, she still speaks to how many years it took her to un-do the mentality of being ‘just a number’ within prison and working on finding not only herself again, but her confidence to build a successful life on the outside, running her hustle on the right side of the law.

Christina, based Eastern Washington, is a ‘boy’ who grew up in a big Latina family with a father who was a preacher, a life where she worked in the fields before school each day, and a life where gang culture and drugs became a part of the picture very early on. In and out of sober houses, she is working hard building a balanced life centered around her family.

Tama-Lisa, a white dyke who dates ‘boys’, has gone from a stint of over ten years in prison, to finally getting herself clean and holding a management position, which has allowed her to buy her first house. With a mouth on her like no other, Tama tells us stories about how it is inside, the drama and the shenanigans, as well as articulating what people need when they get out of prison to be positive members of society.

There are many other characters within the film with large and smaller parts, including Honey Jo, Liz, TaLee, Black, Lora/Hungry, Sunny, Riley, T, Ronda, Tank, Monica, Andrea, etc.

You’re collaborating with Sebastian, one of the protagonists in the film. What has the experience been like working together?

Yes! Sebastian and I get along really well, so working together makes a lot of sense! For me it is important that the film includes an ‘insider’ perspective as well as someone who can more easily network with formerly incarcerated people who we want to stay connected to the project. I am still the active director of the project and of course have different skill sets in filmmaking, etc., but the great thing about having Sebastian involved is that his voice is a part of the conversation, and he shows up and has stayed a strong supporter of the film through thick and thin!

What were some of the most stand-out moments or stories that you encountered while making the film?

There are soooo many incredible and hard and funny and heartbreaking things that have happened the last 8 years of the production. Some key aspects have been seeing some people in the film go from struggling to get custody of their kids and find housing to having strong careers, being great parents and buying their own home! Other stories that are much harder include one individual in the film who is no longer alive due to drug addiction. Loosing her was very hard for many people involved in the project. I think the most recent moment that was incredible for me was a conversation I had with two interviewees, where they really stepped into advocating for how they want to be portrayed and talking about their vision for the larger impact of the film. Having a long term project where people can go from being institutionalized to being much more grounded in advocating for themselves is incredible, and I feel so honored to have them on board and to be moving forward with them.

In a previous interview you did with Sebastian promoting the film (in the above video), both of you mentioned that the emotions in the film range from humor to sorrow. What are some of the funnier and/or emotional moments in the film?

Well, the funny stuff gets pretty raunchy! There are amazing storytellers in the film and the stories about relationships and drama are pretty funny, and just sometimes shocking. There is also a darker humor about violence also, where people use humor to deal with abuse as well as acting out violence for protection. The cry fest stuff is around the people who have passed who were deeply connected to not only the film but others within it. Even the fact that there is footage of people who have since died, when they were doing really well, and that they fell so far, is pretty emotional.

In that same interview, you mentioned that a lot of your film’s protagonists found that there was an extreme adjustment period after serving time. What are some of the challenges they’ve faced, and how are they doing now?

Yes. Many people, when incarcerated for years, become very institutionalized. Meaning, after years of other people telling you exactly where and how you can move, dress, act, what you can eat, etc., having that freedom they’ve been longing for, to have the freedom of choice and movement, for many people this is quite overwhelming. I’ve heard many stories of people having panic attacks from just going to the store and having to chose between 30 different deodorants for example. I know for many people, having routine and things ‘just so’ in their homes is really important because it becomes so ingrained. For many people, recidivism is also a very big issue. Lots of people come out and they don’t have a place to live, no money, can’t work, and they end up on the street running the same hustle as before. There are services and programs, but most are not comprehensive enough and also there are not enough resources. Many people also miss their friends or have a girlfriend inside they want to go back to, so they will reoffend to go back to prison, because it is what they know. So many people start getting locked up when they are teenagers because of drugs and hard family situations, and institutions become so familiar that people really struggle to find ways to build a life on the outside. But, that being said, there are some outstanding success stories within “Boys on the Inside” and some really strong people who have been to hell and back and are building beautiful lives for themselves.

With the popularity of “Orange is the New Black,” how has that affected the way that you’ve thought about your film and your creative process, and the public’s interest in this subject matter?

The funny thing is, we started filming “Boys on the Inside” in 2008, before “Orange is the New Black” was broadcast! So, with that as a large pop culture icon depicting life in women’s prisons, it for sure creates a new context for our film. We’ve even gone as far as to point to “Boys on the Inside” as the ‘Real’ “Orange is the New Black.” The point of the film has never been to create a film in opposition to OITNB, but we do see it as a parallel that will shed light on some more truth to the experience of incarceration, where OITNB has dramatized the story, of what I will also point out is a minimum-security institution. We are really excited by how this new cultural landscape of OITNB, trans bathroom rights as well as critique of the prison system, will be things we can tap into that will support the film in touring and doing impactful community engagement! Bring it!

What were some of the biggest challenges or obstacles you faced while making the film, and how were you able to overcome them?

There are logistical challenges, like getting access to certain space, as well as keeping in touch with people who bounce back and forth between being in and out of prison. But there are also the personal and creative challenges – namely that it is a lot of pressure to create a work that there will be so much expectation and personal investment in from audiences. This is something I have learned through creating past work, and in realizing how much audiences and community project themselves or their needs onto projects and films, especially when there is a huge lack of visibility and this quite possibly being the first time they have seen something close to their stories on screen, people really want their idea of how the story should be told to be centered. This is completely understandable. However, it is one film and there are certain constrains that happen when you have 1-1.5 hours to tell a story. There will be audiences where people with opposite views will both have strong opinions about the work. These conversations are important and I’ve learned that these need to be community conversations within the audience – the film is like a spark plug that helps boost the conversation. I have no way of knowing the specifics of what is happening in each community we will visit, but I do know that is there is a needed conversation around the issues in this film, there will for sure be a lot to talk about, and I look forward to that being a productive process!

What’s next for the project, and what needs to happen now to complete the film?

We are almost done filming!! (Really!!) After 8 years, most of which was spent in out of country, I am ready to wrap this baby up! We will complete filming this fall/winter and aim to have a final cut by June 2017 for an early 2018 premiere! We are running a crowdfunding campaign for $35,000 that ends Monday, September 19th at 4pm (PST) that will allow us to complete production and post-production so that the film is festival ready! Any support through donation and/or sharing the campaign info on social media and in community networks would be so appreciated! This is a great opportunity to get involved in the first film about ‘boy’ identity in women’s prisons!!

Where do you plan to take your film after it’s completed, and how do you plan to use the film in terms of outreach and education?

Well… we have our dream premieres of course, the top festivals being Sundance, TIFF, Tribecca, Cannes and Berlinale… so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens! There is a lot of industry interest in the film already though – since I’ve been promoting the film and had a trailer out since 2012 or so, queer film festivals internationally have been bugging me to screen it. Some people even think it’s already done since it’s been such a long project! Haha. Well, the world premiere will be here sooner than we realize, and we can’t wait to share this film and these stories with everyone!! In regards to community engagement – we have lots of plans! This is another reason it is key for Sebastian to be involved in the production, so that he becomes deeply familiar with the process and speaking publicly about the film as well as his experience. My aim is to tour to as many communities as we can, with a panel of people from the project, while also mandating that whichever institution brings us, to partner with a local agency that can bring in local women and trans folks who are recently out of prison. It is essential that these conversations firstly don’t just look at the people in the film as ‘other’ through an academic lens, and the best way I can think to do this is to shift the conversation back to people’s own communities – to flip the mirror back on them as it were. That is the idea/plan anyways. I’ve also recently been advised that having mental health counselors available is something to consider, because some aspects of the film might bring up hard stuff about personal experiences of audience members. I hope also to not only go into other communities around the country and hopefully internationally too, but as well to do some meaningful work locally in the Pacific Northwest with the support of local institutions and service agencies.

What are some websites and web links where people can learn more about the film and your crowdfunding campaign?

We have so many! First – the crowdfunding campaign (Seed&Spark, which is film specific) is here: https://www.seedandspark.com/fund/boys-on-the-inside

In addition to donating, it is also important to “follow” the campaign page – it takes 2 minute and doesn’t require a donation! With 1,000 followers, our successful campaign will get free distribution support from Seed&Spark!!

The queen of switching up the sound of pop, Lady Gaga, is in talks to possibly headline the 2017 Superbowl Halftime Show. With 2016 nearing to an end in three months, Gaga had quite a transformative year: she won a Golden Globe for her role on AHS: Hotel, put out a jazz album with legend Tony Bennet, will star in “A Star Is Born” directed by hunky Bradley Cooper, and a new album “LG5” slated to come out by the end of the year, it only makes sense that Superbowl would want her to perform.

Check it out:

Her flawless rendition of the Star Spangled Banner (in a teased out blonde bouffant no less) probably helped to garner her a spot in the running.

Let’s cross our fingers!

Wait… You Mean Guys Don’t Want Us to Look at Their Bulges?

screen-shot-2016-09-15-at-9-31-12-am

You know those now rather ubiquitous street trends for men: the thigh-grazing t-shirt and the baggy shorts-over-tights look? Didn’t you find it TERRIBLY chic when you first saw it emerge a few years ago? Didn’t you think that men – STRAIGHT MEN! – had suddenly woken up to a hankering for street style? That they had grown tired of their skinny jeans and flannel shirts and had suddenly started playing with proportion and layering and intersecting length possibilities? That the gym rats and skateboarders and messenger boys were all watching Ric Owens fashion shows on this iPhones and taking notes?

Well.

That’s not the case at ALL.

I was gassing on the other day about how much I love the look, when my friend said “You know they just do it so we can’t check out their bulges, right?”

WHAAAAAAAAAT?

“Yeah. The whole shorts-over-tights thing was because men were sick of us looking at their packages while they worked out. The whole trend is just a defense against bird-watching.”

You mean… men don’t like it when we stare and gawp and gape with open mouthed adoration? They don’t like it when we giggle and point out their peen prints to our girlfriends? THEY DON’T LIKE TO BE OBJECTIFIED?

That flies in the face of everything I thought I knew about men. I thought they LOVED their bulges? I thought they were their pride and joy?

I’m so confused.

And I can’t help feel like maybe I, and my fellow bloggers, contributed to the trend by making such a big deal about celebrity bulges. A few years ago men left their houses, brazenly wearing the tightest outfits, the most form-fitting looks. And what did they get for it? A virtual tongue bath from the gay press. It all came to a head (literally) with Jon Hamm and his now-legendary hammaconda. After that, I noticed fewer and fewer paparazzi pictures featuring bulges. Celebrities had taken note and were covering up. Of course there are holdouts (see: Justin Bieber and Orlando Bloom), but for the most part, if you want to go birdwatching, you have to go look at actual birds. There is a concerted effort by men to make leering at them as difficult as possible.

Lady Miss Kier Talks to Vogue: “I’ve Learned to Create My Own Scene When NYC is Going Through One of its Bad Moods”

screen-shot-2016-09-15-at-11-01-59-am

The always iconic, always dee-lovely Lady Miss Kier spoke to Vogue about platforms, snazzy prints, and New York nightlife.

Who are your style icons?
Grace Jones, Veruschka, Rosa Parks, Eartha Kitt, Alpana Bawa, Thierry Mugler, and Rumi from the Cockettes.

Can you talk a bit about your style evolution?
I still believe the best accessory is a smile, the best attitude is no attitude, and the only permanent thing about me is change. New fashion usually inspires because it makes me think the world is changing. However, like history, everything repeats in time. Because good style is everlasting, it can’t be purchased.

You’ve always loved a print . . .
[I’ve] always [been] a fan of Pucci, Marimekko, and recently Tabboo!’s prints in the new Marc Jacobs collection. Before music snatched me away, I majored in textile design at Pratt Phoenix and FIT. I dropped out as my songwriting hobby took off.

What about those Fleuvogs?
[They] were easy to dance in with their wide bell-bottom heels. I wore them for two world tours in the ’90s and still bust them out today.

How has nightlife changed in New York?
I could write a book on this, but will just say the NYC pendulum usually swings back, and I’ve learned to create my own scene when the NYC is going through one of its bad moods. I’m thrilled to hear about the house music revival coming from London over the last five years. I am thoroughly inspired by their take on the early ’90s NYC/NJ house sound.

SWOON. I will always be her biggest fan. Read the entire article here.

OMGOMGOMG: Gaga Announces Album Title, Release Date…. and Reveals the Cover Art!

On Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show this morning, Gaga announced the title and release date of her much-anticipated 5th solo album. It’s called… wait for it… “JOANNE” – named after her favorite fabric store.

No. Wait. I’m being told by my producers that’s NOT the reason for the title. Joanne was actually her aunt.

She explains to Zane:

“The decision to name the album Joanne was in tribute to my father’s sister who died when she was 19. The death of her in his family and his life really left a scar and a wound that never healed. And as I returned to my home life and spending time with my friends, and hanging out with my family, and getting out of the mainstream limelight for a minute, what I realized is it’s the experiences of our family, and our challenges, and our toughness that make us who we are. So she is the woman of my past that is becoming and helping me bring more of my honest woman-self into the future.”

The album will feature 11 songs, with confirmed track titles: “Perfect Illusion,” “Hey Girl,” “Sinner’s Prayer,” “John Wayne.” She also revealed that the upcoming “Perfect Illusion” video will be directed by Ruth Hogben (who did her ArtRAVE fashion film).

Also: ONTD mentioned that “Hillary Lindsay” will be featured, which had me in thrashing in paroxysms of ecstasy, believing that both Hillary Duff and Lindsay Lohan were guesting on a song… maybe a song about their mutual former boyfriend Aaron Carter? OMG CAN YOU IMAGINE? My world exploded in rainbows and confetti… then I googled Hillary Lindsay and discovered she’s “an American singer-songwriter who has written songs with or for Michelle Branch, Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Shakira, and Lady Antebellum.” Sooooo…. yeah. Dream shattered.

Maybe NEXT album?

Brandon T. Snider Talks “A Weekend Conference”, the Tragicomedy of Gay Conversion Therapy and His New Book Series Peter Powers.

Brandon T. Snider is a modern day renaissance man: an actor, a comic book writer, and now, he can add playwright to his impressive resume. We caught up with him (if you can catch him!) on his upcoming theater debut “A Weekend Conference,” his new book series Peter Powers, and what he describes as ‘the tragicomedy of gay conversation therapy.’ With his toes dipped into so many rich projects, does he have time for anything else? Why yes, New York Comic Con in October is just one of many things we learned during our intimate conversation with Snider.

Check it out:

WOW: Hi Brandon! Thanks so much for talking with us today. You have lots of theater this week! Tell us about your short play you wrote “A Weekend Conference.” What’s it about and how did it come to life?
Brandon: LOTS of theater. Everyone is excited. Without giving too much away, “A Weekend Conference” is about three strangers on their way to a very curious weekend retreat. It’s a comedy! That’s also tragic. I’m acting in it alongside two fine actors, Mike Houston (Orange is the New Black) and Gabe Fazio (The Place Beyond the Pines). Our director Richard Masur is the best. He’s like the wise shaman of acting. I would do anything he told me to do. And he’s been in every single movie and TV show ever made, I swear to god. I love Richard. I love Mike and Gabe. I can’t wait for people to see their work. It’s really special.

I was inspired to write the play after watching a documentary about gay conversion therapy. It’s so sad to see men accept their truth and then work backwards to erase themselves. They spout all kinds of bizarre religious reasoning that makes absolutely no practical sense as it relates to human sexuality. What’s intriguing and disappointing at the same time is that many men believe in these programs despite never actually having their desired breakthrough. In the abstract, there’s something really funny to me about the men who rave and gush over these experiences. Some of them are lifers. They talk about how bonded they feel to these other men because they’re all going through the same thing. It’s like of course you love leaving your wives behind to bunk up with twenty other dudes in the woods, getting into massage circles and putting on plays. You are a gay man. I love that bit in Waiting for Guffman (my favorite movie) when Corky St. Clair talks about shopping for his wife. You laugh because at first you think he must be joking then you realize he’s serious and you laugh again because there’s just no way this man isn’t aware of himself. But I also want to say that I have great empathy for these men. Many of them are shut off from reality out of fear. There’s no gay community that they feel safe enough to explore. Some of them come from small rural areas where the hint of gayness might cause them to become the town outcast. We touch a little bit on that aspect in the play.

WOW: I also see that you’re starring in David Thigpen’s “In Wake of Yesterday.” What’s that about and how did you get attached to the project?
Brandon: “In Wake of Yesterday” is set in a trailer in South Carolina during the mid-90’s and it’s about a bunch of people in the middle of a drug-fueled celebration. A portrait of dysfunction. David wrote this play specifically for the people who’re starring in it which was very cool. We’ve been friends for years and I love the rest of the cast. David and Kevin Kane are directing. I play a semi-closeted redneck named Randall. He dreams of an exciting life beyond the trailer park, knowing full well it’s way beyond his reach. He’s about to lose one of the only people who has ever shown him unconditional kindness and respect. It puts him on edge. He’s had to navigate a lot of abuse and harassment in his life but when push comes to shove, Randall gives as good as he gets. I get to speak in a backwoods Southern dialect which is always exciting.

WOW: Tell us a little bit about The Collective and your involvement with them?
Brandon: I came to The Collective through Kevin Kane who’s a good friend and one of the co-artistic directors. We went to college together and were roommates during our early years in NYC. He and a handful of William Esper Studio graduates started the company together almost ten years ago.  Amy Schumer is a founding member. We used to do sketch comedy shows at this synagogue in Midtown called the Actor’s Temple. They were basically fundraisers for whatever play production was going up at the time. That was back in the beginning. The company has grown so much since then and it’s been really amazing to watch it happen. They’re making all kinds of movies and people are popping up on TV like crazy. David Thigpen’s “Turtleface” has been winning awards at film festivals. Sayra Player’s film “Uncle Silas” is hitting that circuit soon. Khalil Muhammad’s one man show about Richard Pryor just killed it at Fringe NYC. Tons of other stuff in the pipeline. They’re a really great group of artists and I love working with them.

WOW: There’s a bajillion things I miss about New York…street fashion, bagels, and of course pizza. But I use to go once a month to Broadway with a coworker from ‘Ugly Betty.’ There’s nothing like NY theater. Why do you think NY theater has successfully managed to continue telling and performing stories for so long?
Brandon: Street fashion! I used to play a game with a friend of mine called “Where are YOU going?” Whenever we’d see, you know, that Asian dude in Soho with the Pocahontas braids who walks around barefoot all day in a Speedo, we’d fantasize about tapping him on his bare shoulder and saying, “Excuse me but where are YOU going?” Like what is his job? Moving on…what I love about this city is that it’s a cross section of culture and it never, ever stops. If you live in Appalachia, your choices are limited. You don’t have access to everything. It’s just how it is. If you live in New York City, you can go see any type of show you could ever imagine. TONIGHT. Just open up a Time Out. You can see a polished Broadway musical or terrible stand-up comedy in a basement. Your options are unlimited. That’s why people come here to find themselves. This city draws the stories out of people. It’s where they get made. People move to New York to work their shit out on stage and that can be thrilling (and painful) to watch.

WOW: Any theater you are looking forward to attending coming up?
Brandon: And now I will share my truth: I’m so behind on current theater, it’s shameful. My writing workload has increased significantly this year and it’s been difficult to find time to see all the things I want to see. I have two beautiful The Humans glasses that I got at Broadway Bets and every time I look at them I’m reminded that I still haven’t actually seen The Humans. I recently downloaded TodayTix though and I’m fairly confident that I’m going to use it by 2017.

WOW: “A Weekend Conference” has gay themes and I know it’s important for you to tell and represent honest stories. How do audiences receive your work?
Brandon: I really want the audience to see the struggle of self-acceptance through the eyes of three very different men. Human sexuality is a spectrum and the characters in this play represent different parts of that spectrum. How they view themselves and each other is part of the play’s conflict. They’re imperfect people who may not make the best choice. We have the luxury, as an audience, of being on the outside looking in. We get to identify what a better choice actually looks like whereas these men may not have that ability. There will be moments that will make your heart hurt a little. That gets balanced out with some genuinely funny moments. What I hope people take away is the idea that we need to be kinder to ourselves and one another. Sometimes we put ourselves through so much pointless suffering because we feel like we’re out of options. It doesn’t have to be that way.

WOW: In “In Wake of Yesterday,” there’s a much larger cast, do you like working in big or small groups? How do you approach each project…both being so different in size and subject matter?
Brandon: I love acting in a good ensemble. Finding the right rhythm to make things work is a challenge I enjoy. It can be a scheduling nightmare but that’s fine. Chaos can be fun. Smaller casts mean individualized attention. In a cast of two or three you can have longer conversations and there’s more room to experiment. When you’ve got five or six people, time is of the essence.

WOW: What have you learned about yourself and your writing process through both projects?
Brandon: Whenever I act in something I’ve written; I tend to think I already know everything about the role. When we started rehearsals for “A Weekend Conference”, I was pretty sure of the approach I was going to take. I wrote the character for myself. Once we began the rehearsal process it became a different story. Richard opened my eyes to some new possibilities and I was able to let go of my previous ideas and do something that worked better and made more sense for the character. It’s a much more truthful performance because of his direction.

WOW: NY Comic Con is just around the corner. I assume you’ll be there? What can we look forward to about this year’s NYCC and the work you will be showing/sharing? What are you most excited about seeing?
Brandon: I’ll be there! I don’t know my whole schedule yet but I’ll mainly be promoting the debut book in a new kid’s series I’m doing for Little Brown & Company called Peter Powers. He’s a sweet, passionate kid who’s desperate to figure out his terribly lame super powers. Peter wants to be a hero so bad he can taste it. There’s lots of action and humor. Themes revolve around the power of family, friends, and having confidence in yourself. I hope it empowers kids but also reminds them that growth takes time. Patience will be rewarded, just hang in there. Dave Bardin’s art makes me squeal with joy. I’ll also be promoting Teen Titans: Jump City Jive and Doctor Strange: Mystery of the Dark Magic.

WOW: I know you are watching All Stars 2 (we text a lot during it). What are your thoughts on the voting twist and who are your favorites? I know you love Alyssa and Katya, but any new surprises in favor?
Brandon: All the twists are great! It’s exactly what the show needed. I’m really into that moment at the end when the losing queen is feeling defeated and all of a sudden here comes Ru with that mystery message. I love the uncertainty. Usually, I love deconstructing the whole thing to figure out who’ll take the crown but I honestly don’t know how All-Stars will play out. My theory is that all the queens who were voted off are going to come back as some sort of tribal council toward the end. I think that’s just because I want RuPaul to make a “hung jury” joke.

WOW: When are both of your shows and how can people get tickets?
Brandon:
“A Weekend Conference” runs Sept 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23 & 24

“In Wake of Yesterday” runs Sept 14, 16, 17, 21, 23, 24, 25

Ticket Information is HERE: http://www.thecollective-ny.org/4th-annual-collective10-4/

WOW: You worked in fashion for a long time. As NYFW is upon us, do you miss it? Do you still partake in fashion week for fun?
Brandon: I do miss it! But only for a second. Fashion Week was always insane because you’re working like a dog and you’re running on fumes but going out every night. I really miss seeing friends at shows and catching up but my liver is retired. No champagne fountains for me anymore. Nowadays, I’d rather be at home watching Loosely Exactly Nicole and ordering tacos on Seamless.

Must-Watch: Jay Z Says the War on Drugs Is an Epic Fail in New York Times Video

screen-shot-2016-09-16-at-10-59-04-am

In a hauntingly illustrated, four-minute video for The New York Times, Jay Z tells the story of the failure of the The War on Drugs. When strict anti-narcotics laws unfairly targeted minorities in the 1980s, he says, “young men like me who hustled became the sole villain, and drug addicts lack moral fortitude”.

White businessmen profit off the decriminalized marijuana trade, while black men with jail records are barred from participating in the industry. “Why are white men poised to get rich doing the same thing African-Americans have been going to prison for?” he asks.

He also blames the sharp rise in the US prison population on mandatory minimum sentences which has “disproportionately come to lock away blacks and Latinos.”

From The New York Times:

The project came about when, last year, Dream Hampton, the filmmaker and a co-author of Jay Z’s book “Decoded,” approached the Drug Policy Alliance about collaborating with Revolve Impact, the social impact agency she works with. Revolve Impact connects artists and influencers to community organizers, and with marijuana legalization taking hold across the nation — and about to be considered in her own state, California — Ms. Hampton wanted to tackle the contradiction raised by Michelle Alexander, the author of “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness,” in 2014: Why were white men poised to get rich doing the very same thing that African-American boys and men had long been going to prison for? Ms. Hampton proposed creating an animated video that the D.P.A. would produce about the impact of the drug war in African-American communities.

Watch it below.

Audience Members FAINTED at Screening for the Terrifying New Cannibal Horror Film “Raw”

In a scene straight out of ’50s schlock horror director Willam Castle‘s playbook, paramedics were called to a Toronto film screening of the cannibal horror film Raw, after multiple audience members fainted.

“An ambulance had to be called to the scene as the film became too much for a couple patrons,” Ryan Werner, who is handling the film’s marketing, said in a statement.

Raw was written and directed by Julia Ducournau, and tells of a vegetarian woman becoming a cannibal after being forced to eat raw rabbit liver during a veterinarian school initiation.

Via The Guardian:

This relatively innocent tasting quickly develops into a lust for man-flesh as the lead protagonist, Justine, turns from a naive freshman into blood-thirsty cannibal.

“Often so realistic that they are hard to look at, scenes that viewers of a sensitive nature may find disturbing see lacerated extremities, bite marks and gaping wounds perfectly walk the line between the visceral fun of practical effects and overt attention-grabbing,” Variety wrote of the film.

Critics are describing the movie as a “huge, satisfying surprise” and “a cross between Suspiria and Ginger Snaps,” but also warn viewers may need to “reach for the barf bag.”

Hmmm. Sounds like a marketing ploy to me, however it’s gotta be better than that warmed-over Blair Witch retread we’ve got this weekend.

Raw is a French language film. Its initial release date was 14 May, at the Cannes film festival. The movie currently has a 100% “fresh” rating on review website Rotten Tomatoes., although there is no American release date yet .

So Corey Feldman… Sang?… and Danced?… on the Today Show Today, And You Really Need to Watch It

Corey Feldman, 46, star of classic ’80s flicks The Goonies and Stand By Me – and close, personal friend of Michael Jackson – appeared on the Today show with his band, Corey’s Angels, to sing “Go For It” from their new album, Angelic 2 the Core.

Dressed in a dark, hooded goth look, he said

“The whole theme of the album is good versus evil, heaven versus hell, that sort of thing.”

Then he began writhing and flailing about, as the music started. And that’s when things got weird.

Whodini rapper Doc Ice, much to the delight of Today host Billy Bush, also made a surprise appearance during the performance. “Watch Feldman twerk,” Doc Ice rapped during the performance. “Get it, get it.”

He later added, “I know that angels have probably saved me once or twice in my life and I like helping them, as well. That’s why I created Corey’s Angels as a way to help girls who are kind of lost and needed to find their way to get their opportunities, their dreams, and make them realities.”

Boy Culture says he “embarrassed himself and everyone else with eyes and ears” and that this performance will “go down in history as a low point in televised humiliation.” That might be an understatement, bless his heart.
