Granger

July 1, 1925Farley Granger:

“I never felt the need to belong to any exclusive, self-defining or special group. I find it difficult to answer questions about “‘gay life” in Hollywood when I was living and working there. There were, of course, gay cliques, but I had no close friends who belonged to any of them, and I had no desire to become involved with any of them . . . I was never ashamed, and I never felt the need to explain or apologize for my relationships to anyone.”

I recently was sacked out on my sofa as I watched back-to-back Hitchcock films on TCM. I thought I had seen all of Alfred Hitchcock’s Hollywood films, and most of his British silent films and early talkies, but I had somehow missed Marnie from 1964. I finally watched this movie in amazement and afterwards I felt I needed to put together a post on my impressions of this nutty psychological thriller about a frigid and fragile person, who is raped by Sean Connery, but then I thought: “Why, when I live it every day?” Immediately following Marnie, I caught Rope (1948). I am always up for a little Farley Granger.

Granger had a career on stage and on screen from the early 1940s into our new century. He is especially noted for starring in a pair of films Hitchcock with legendary homosexual subtext: Rope and Strangers On A Train (1951).

His first starring role in They Live By Night (1948), directed by bi-sexual Nicholas Ray, is probably my favorite of his film performances. Granger’s sensitive portrayal of a bank robber on the lam grabbed the attention of Hitchcock. While preparing to shoot Rope, a film inspired by the notorious Leopold and Loeb murder case, Hitchcock had the great idea to cast Granger. He chose as Granger’s co-star, John Dahl, whose gayness was also well known in Hollywood. They play a pair of affluent young men who set out to commit a “prefect murder” just for the thrill.

The two characters sexuality is never made explicit in the film, but the relationship between the young men has an extra strong dose of homoerotic subtext, skillfully sewn together by Hitchcock and his actors. The film is famous for its continuous, uninterrupted 10-minute takes, the amount of time a reel of Technicolor film lasted. It was a difficult feat and Hitchcock ran into numerous technical problems which frequently brought the action to a halt throughout the short 21 day shoot. I find Rope to be a brilliant film, and not just as a technical marvel. It is probably Hitchcock’s talkiest movie. It also seems underappreciated by film fans, never on any list of Hitchcock’s greatest, but the time is long overdue for it to be appreciated as a masterpiece of suspense and art.

Three years after starring in Rope, Granger again worked with Hitchcock in another classic thriller about a perfect murder, Strangers On A Train, based on the first novel by acclaimed lesbian writer Patricia Highsmith, author of The Talented Mr. Ripley and a series of other Ripley books, plus the groundbreaking romance novel The Price of Salt, adapted to last year’s Carol. Hitchcock was dissatisfied with the end result of Strangers On A Train, but it proved to be an unlikely box-office hit and the first major success of Granger’s career. It remains one of my favorite of Hitchcock’s films.

Granger had affairs with both men and women. Unlike most other actors who were gay or bisexual, Granger refused to get married just to keep film fans off-guard. When producer Samuel Goldwyn took him to task for dating gay composer Aaron Copland, Granger declared:

“Copland is one of the most important composers in America and a gentleman. I met him at this studio when you hired him to write the score for The North Star. I’m not going to be told who I can or cannot see in my private life.”

Granger had flings with Leonard Bernstein, writer Arthur Laurents, and actor Robert Walker and he remained close friends with both of them until each of their deaths. I like that. I remain friends with most of my liaisons. It’s so civilized.

In 1995 Granger was one of the actors interviewed for Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s ground-breaking documentary The Celluloid Closet (1995), discussing the depiction of homosexuality in film, in particular, Rope and Strangers On A Train.

“I never hid. I never considered myself in the closet. When I had my relationship with Arthur Laurents during the filming of Rope, all of my friends knew about it. We went out to dinner together and went to parties together. It was the crowd we hung out with – it was a New York music and theatre crowd. None of those people cared a fig about whom you were having sex with.”

Granger was a profoundly good-looking guy and an actor of considerable range and style: Broadway, films, musicals, light comedies, dramas and film noir. He made more than 50 films and he worked in a dozen Broadway shows, plus daytime soap operas on television. Laurents:

“As striking as Farley’s looks were, he seemed unaware of them. Once you knew him, what you marveled at was his sweetness. He was generous with praise for his peers and with presents for friends, as though he himself wasn’t enough to give.”

I find him to be the epitome of how to age with class and distinction. He was in a 49 year romantic partnership with stage manager Robert Calhoun who left this world in 2008. The couple lived in the same Greenwich Village apartment for all those decades. I said hello to them once on a spring day in 1977 when I was on my way to an acting class at HB Studios. The three of us chatted on the sidewalk for a moment about acting schools. He mentioned that he had also studied at the Actors Studio along with his BFF Shelly Winters. At the time he was in his early 50s and I must say, Granger was just about the handsomest man I had ever laid eyes on.

You really should read Granger’s dishy memoir, deliciously titled Include Me Out (2007).

“I looked forward to the time when I could be myself. And, that’s how I have lived and still continue to live my life. Fortunately, it has been many years since I felt the need to be secretive.”

Granger took his final bow in the same week as Elizabeth Taylor in spring of 2011.

Justin Bieber Pays Touching Tribute to Orlando Victims: “Don’t Ever Be Afraid to Be Yourself!”

Bieber

During last night’s concert in Orlando, Justin Bieber spoke to the crowd about how deeply the news of the shootings affected him.

“You guys have been in my heart,” he said. “I’ve just been thinking of the families and really feeling for them. It’s hard to really be happy in a time like this, so it means a lot to see you guys out here, smiling.”

“It’s no joke. It’s tough. This is such a moment for us to be together. We have to continue to be strong. So much love goes out to all the families, so much love. But let’s also, let’s just celebrate. They can’t take down Orlando.”

Bieber then sang  his song “Purpose” with the names of the 49 victims of the Pulse nightclub shootin scrolled up the screen (along with Christina Grimmie‘s). As he sang he walked to the screen and faced it for the remainder of the song so his back was to the audience.

“I’m on your side. I’m on this journey with you all,” Bieber told the audience during the show. “Don’t ever feel like you’re on your journey alone. I’m with you. Don’t ever be afraid to be yourself.”

Not sure why I find this so creepy, but something about the dangling body parts and the blasé way they are dealt with in this 2-minute behind-the-scenes peak inside the Real Doll factory, just gives me the collywobbles.

Watch as factory employees craft the rubber dolls from pre-made moulds, and assemble them piece by piece – starting with the torso. Body parts are added to a creepy poseable skeleton, after being made in the molds and then smoothed out to give the skin a lifelike feel.

And finishing touches like nail paint, realistic-looking nipples and lips are added in once the body starts to take shape.

The dolls, which are custom-made, will set you back at least $6,000 and go as high as 10,000.

It was exactly three years ago this week that young Jeremy Frederic Wilson – Bombiddyboo to his friends – uploaded this earnest yet intoxicating video of his 4th of July interpretive dance to YouTube. The internet was – how shall we say? – less than appreciative. Poor guy.  We, as a nation of cynical conformists, just weren’t ready for this unbridled patriotic jelly. I just hope the intervening years have found Jeremy all the happiness and standing ovations he deserves. If you’ve never see it, watch it below and marvel at this special snowflake, this perfect flower, this perfect fusion of innocence and camp. Such joy! Such freedom! Such imagination! God bless  you, Bombiddyboo.

#BornThisDay: Skater, Johnny Weir

weir-vancouver-2010

July 2, 1984John Garvin Weir

In February 2014, I was in my fourth month of cancer treatment. I don’t know if you kids are savvy to the ways of chemotherapy. I hope you never have to experience this wonder of the medical world. I did lose 50 pounds on the Amazing Cancer Diet, but it left me without strength, appetite, libido or interest in the subjects I love the most: television, books, films, music, whiskey, and shirtless male film stars. I was on a morphine drip and I initially I thought the drugs were making me hallucinate because each day I would turn on the television to catch the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia because I have always have had a grade A Olympic fever. There on the screen were Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski all dressed up in the craziest outfits, giggling their way through some sort of skating commentary. I felt like I was off my rocker. It could not possibly be real.

The two-time Olympian Weir spent each day of those Winter Olympics in Russia hurling fairy dust and sequins in Vladimir Putin’s homophobic face while announcing the figure skating for NBC Sports. I really did think that I might be hallucinating as this transcendent couple babbled on about flutzes, death spirals and camel-toes while providing the very best possible fashion show.

It seems nutty to me, but Figure Skating’s gay angle is rarely publically discussed in the sports world or its commentary. It has been complicated long before Weir came on the scene. Who would have guessed that there were homo skaters? Weir didn’t come out of the closet until he had left the sport. So when Weir, who, at the time, was married to a man of Russian descent, was on television behaving as flamboyantly gay as he pleased in Sochi, his implied political message was as brave as it was fun.

When Weir competed in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver BC, he was made to endure many derogatory comments about his implied gayness and even the question of his gender. Some sports writers speculated that Weir did not receive a medal that year, even with excellent technical scores, because of his crazy costume and music choices, and his on the ice attitude. Weir responded:

“I’ve heard worse in bathrooms. I don’t want 50 years from now more young boys and girls to have to go through this sort of thing.”

But he wasn’t always so forthright. In 2006, Weir stated:

“I don’t feel the need to express my sexual being because it’s not part of my sport & it’s private. I can sleep with whomever I choose and it doesn’t affect what I’m doing on the ice.”

In January 2011, he changed his position:

“With people killing themselves and being scared into the closet, I hope that even just one person can gain strength from my story. In a sexual way, I’m gay.”

In his memoir Welcome To My World (2011) Weir writes:

“I’m not ashamed to be me. More than anyone else I know, I love my life & accept myself. What’s wrong with being unique? I am proud of everything that I am and will become.”

About the controversy over his decision to work at the Sochi Games rather than join a boycott:

“I risk jail time just going there, but the Olympics are not the place to make a political statement. I’m not a politician and I don’t really talk about politics. You don’t have to agree with the politics, but you have to respect the culture of a country you are visiting.”

“It’s pretty obvious that I’ve been gay my whole life. I don’t need to break any laws or wear a rainbow pin to show people that I support gay rights. I think I’ll do that just by being in Sochi and supporting our people there & letting them know they are not alone.”

“The gay community has not reacted well to me because some people think it’s my responsibility to be an activist. They’re expecting me to hate Russia because I haven’t been given equal rights in Russia. If it’s good enough for Elton John, it’s good enough for me. Every country’s going to have its issues.”

Weir has provided some of his own choreography for his routines and designed his own skating costumes, plus he has designed Ice Dancing costumes for Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov, along with costumes for skaters Oksana Baiul and Yuzuru Hanyu.

In 2010 Weir started his own fashion label, Be Unique. He has appeared in fashion spreads for Vanity Fair and Vogue, and he has walked the runway in shows for the fashion label Heatherette. He has been a terrific, smart and entertaining guest judge on World Of Wonder’s own RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Weir and Lipinski have continued on as NBC Sports correspondents, and perhaps most importantly, they continue with the over-the-top fashion that you just have to see to believe. The last time I saw the fun couple was at the 142nd Kentucky Derby in May. I was off the morphine, but it still felt like a drug trip. I hope, beyond all hopes, that they will be offering commentary from the men’s shower at the Rio Summer Olympic Games in August.

Weir is a World Competition medalist and three-time USA National Champion. I enjoyed getting to know him from his television series show Be Good Johnny Weir (2010-12). If you are still a bit icy about him, check out the documentary Pop Star On Ice (2008).

#ThingsGoBetterWithCoke?: Chipotle Executive Indicted in Cocaine Ring Bust

As if they haven’t had enough problems of late, now Chipotle’s Chief Creative and Development Officer Mark Crumpacker has been put on “administrative leave”, following reports that he was indicted for cocaine possession.

Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold issued a statement via email,

“At the moment, we know very little about these charges. Due to the nature of the situation, Mark has been placed on administrative leave. We made this decision in order to remain focused on the operation of our business, and to allow Mark to focus on these personal matters. Mark’s responsibilities have been assigned to other senior managers in his absence.”

The Daily News reported that Crumpacker and other defendants were indicted as part of an investigation that began in 2015 after one of its customers, an investment banker, jumped from the roof of his building and died. Many of the drug sales took place in delis, Duane Reade, and CVS pharmacies, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, and customers generally paid between $200 and $300 per deal.

CVS and Duane Reade huh? Well, we certainly have enough of them in Manhattan and HELLO?! where else do you get drugs? At the drugstore! Duh.

577799861800002500fa3a86New Zealand just made its biggest ever cocaine bust after finding $10 million worth of the drug stashed inside this diamante-encrusted sculpture of a horse’s head.

Police officers and customs officials seized the artwork, which weighed 880 pounds, shortly after it was freighted into the country from Mexico last May. When they opened it up, they were shocked to find 35 bricks of high-grade cocaine inside. Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Parmenter, from the Organised Crime Auckland squad, said,

This is obviously an extremely large amount of cocaine, and in the past we’ve only found very small amounts of this drug.

Three men have been arrested in connection with the plot. A 56-year-old U.S. national and a 44-year-old Mexican national were detained at Auckland International Airport, just as they were about to catch a flight to Hawaii, last Friday.

A 29-year-old Mexican national was arrested in Christchurch shortly after. He is scheduled to appear at Christchurch District Court on Monday on the same charges. If convicted of importation, all three men could face life in prison.

When No Designer Would Dress Her, Christian Siriano Answered Leslie Jones’ Call For Help

It seems the all-female reboot of Ghostbusters is just a controversy machine, huh? Well, the latest dust-up happened when Leslie Jones got all up in the fashion industry’s face fashion on Tuesday. The SNL cast member’s tweet said,

It’s so funny how there are no designers wanting to help me with a premiere dress for the movie. Hmmm that will change and I remember everything.

Fans and media outlets began picking up the tweet, and some thought it was slight against the fashion industry for not catering to women of her height, race, age or some combination of the three.

Project Runway alum, designer Christian Siriano, heard the call and responded offering to make Jones a dress. Jones accepted and Thursday the two took turns posting pictures on social media of their collaboration. In response to the Siriano tweeted,

It shouldn’t be exceptional to work with brilliant people just because they’re not sample size. Congrats aren’t in order, a change is.

What he said.

UPDATE: In case you think this is about getting free clothes, this from Wow’s Facebook comments on this post:

I used to work Hollywood PR. When you are starring in a film, and walk the carpet, you are representing the product, in this case the movie, plus as an actress you are a brand. Designers will send clothes, jewelry, accessories, and top stylists will compete to dress you. There is still this subtle racism in this town. Women of color often get overlooked, and, if you happen to be a curvy woman, or do not have a Vogue body, you are not taken seriously.” –Dan Krisher

#SpoilerAlert!: Does Game of Thrones Have a “Gay Problem?”

Fate sealed: King Renly Baratheon (Gethin Anthony, right) with Sir Loras Tyrell (Finn Jones)

Fate sealed: King Renly Baratheon (Gethin Anthony, right) with Sir Loras Tyrell (Finn Jones)

Yes, SPOILERS AHEAD for the season-six finale of Game of Thrones, so turn back now if you haven’t seen it or don’t yell at me on Facebook…

According to New York magazine’s Brian Moylan, Game of Thrones, has been having a gay problem with characters, and I agree.

Loras Tyrell dies within the first 15 minutes of the show, and it was a BIG disappointment for gay GOT fans. During his trial and moments before his death, he was forced to renounce his sexual orientation and the man he loved. He confessed,

I have laid with other men, including the traitor Renly Baratheon. I’m guilty of depravity, dishonesty, profligacy, and arrogance.

Fucking High Sparrow!

Gay GOT characters have met with some especially gruesome ends, which seems to be the way to go on the show:

Renly Baratheon was killed by a shadow monster that climbed out of Melisandre’s womb.

Oberyn Martell had his face caved in by the Mountain.

Loras suffered both physical and psychological violence.

• And poor Hodor. The character was presumably asexual, but the actor who played him, Kristian Nairn, was the only openly gay actor in the huge cast.

It seems the only remaining LGBT characters are lady-lovers, Yara Greyjoy and Ellaria Sand (who’s bi) and they only seem to be into female prostitutes.

But the show creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss made the gayness of these characters much more explicit than it is in the books. George R.R. Martin seems resistant to adding gay characters to the series. In 2014 he said,

I’m not going to do it just for the sake of doing it. If the plot lends itself to that, if one of my viewpoint characters is in a situation, then I’m not going to shy away from it, but you can’t just insert things because everyone wants to see them.

Somebody could sill come out of the closet, but it does seem sad the way shows have a history of offing gay characters. Seeing LGBT characters is important, but audiences are increasingly sensitive to their fate, especially given the massacre in Orlando and decades of best-pal sidekicks and the long shadow of AIDS stories.

We want to see ourselves, but we all gotta have hope too.

Cimino directed eight films in his career. His second was the 1978 Vietnam War masterpiece The Deer Hunter, which won five Academy Awards, including best picture and director; his third was 1980’s Heaven’s Gate, the film that became a code word for showbiz disaster.

When Cimino made a deal with Universal and EMI for the The Deer Hunter in ’78, he had only two screenplay credits, then wrote and directed only one other film, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. Deer Hunter ran behind schedule and over budget, but was a big money-maker at he box office.

HEAVEN'S GATE - American One Sheet Poster Based on its success, United Artists signed him for Heaven’s Gate, a Western based on the Johnson County Wars. It began filming in April ’79 and wrapped 11 months later and in his book Final Cut, Steven Bach, who was a UA exec at the time, said the film was greenlit for $7.5 million but eventually budgeted at $11.5 million but ended up costing much more. It was a $44 million loss for UA. Cimino always avoided questions about the disastrous Gate,” and labeled Bach’s book “a work of fiction.”

Almost from the beginning, Gate was the subject of criticism and speculation. Cimino was such a perfectionist that Hollywood told tales of him halting filming so an outdoor set could be rebuilt to have a wider sidewalk. At various times, United Artists execs considered firing him or pulling the plug, but they didn’t.

Over the years, the film has been re-evaluated several times, with either positive or rapturous reception. Cimino circled many projects that never came to fruition, including a life of Dostoevsky developed with Raymond Carver; adaptations of Crime and Punishment, Truman Capote’s Handcarved Coffins, Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead and Andre Malraux’s Man’s Fate; and bios of Janis Joplin, Legs Diamond and Mafia boss Frank Costello.

Michael Cimino was (probably) 77. His birthday is usually cited as Feb. 3, 1939, though many facts about Cimino’s life, including his birthdate, were clouded in conflicting information.

July 3, 1927Ken Russell:

“This is not the age of manners. This is the age of kicking people in the crotch and telling them something and getting a reaction. I want to shock people into awareness. I don’t believe there is any virtue in understatement.”

Henry Kenneth Arthur Russell was a fierce filmmaker with a most unusual sense of humor and a special talent to delight and provoke at the same time. His films had a mighty impact on me as a youth, with some of my first glimpses of male erotic encounters, along with his decidedly demented sensibility.

A pair of his films enthralled me as a teenager and they had repeated viewings, not easy, this was before streaming, this was even before DVRs. My first encounter with Russell was with his screen adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s Women In Love (1969). This was Russell’s first real commercial success, and it had a fireside nude wrestling scene between Oliver Reed and Alan Bates which jolted me right into being gay. This scene apparently made the actors feel anxious, to say nothing of the audiences and censors. With a provocative screenplay by gay hero Larry Kramer, Women In Love brought both Russell and Kramer Academy Award nominations and made Russell a director not to be ignored.

The second Russell film that had me all a dither was The Music Lovers (1970), a swinging account of the gay composer Pyotr IlyichTchaikovsky‘s marriage and final days, which starred gay actor Richard Chamberlain in the lead role and brought his co-star Glenda Jackson even more notice by film fans.

“Wake ’em up”, that was Russell’s motto, and it is certainly true that you would probably not nod-off while watching a Russell film. If you did, you would have nightmares. Sex was the source of most of his themes, which always seemed fun coming from what should have been a buttoned-up Brit. His films were certainly not an example of English good taste, usually exemplified in the British films of his era by perfectly suppressed emotion and proper clipped upper-class accents. Russell’s films are considered impolite, even crude and deliberately shocking.

Russell had a thing for making films about the lives of classical composers. He filmed bio-pics of artists including: Edward Elgar, Frederick Delius, Tchaikovsky, Gustav Mahler, and Franz Liszt. Song Of Summer (1968), about Delius, blind and syphilitic, attempting to complete his last works with the aid of his fellow composer Eric Fenby, is one of the very best films about being a creative artist that I have seen. Made for television, it is hard to find, but I caught it on the Sundance Channel last year and I marveled.

English born Russell studied photography at art school. His youth was rather wild and not particularly discreet. He did lots of drugs. He attempted a career as a ballet dancer and a photographer before getting a job at the BBC, where he made a series of educational musical specials about the lives of composers. The success and notoriety of these little features, gave Russell the power to make feature films. Many of his films are criticized for playing fast with the facts, but they make for terrific psychological fantasies rather than straight-up film biographies.

I love the films of Ken Russell. Some of my favorite films are among his 60+ movies. I will never forget the audacious, disturbing The Devils (1971), which stars Vanessa Redgrave  as a holy sister and features nuns masturbating to images of Christ on the cross.  Unfortunately, I saw this one while tripping on LSD and never fully recovered.

I adore The Boy Friend (1971), a film Russell made to cleanse himself from The Devils. It is a zany musical based on gay songwriter Sandy Wilson‘s popular stage production, a spoof of 1920s stage musicals, twisted into a tribute to 1930s movie musicals and an homage to the great choreographer-director Busby Berkeley. This one is much debated by Musical Theatre purist, but I totally dig it. I am a big fan of Savage Messiah (1972) about the tempestuous life of the sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska; and Mahler (1974), a highly fictionalized biopic starring Robert Powell as the very neurotic Teutonic composer.

I am also zany for Tommy (1975), Russell’s witty, engaging version of The Who‘s rock opera; Valentino (1977), starring gay Rudolf Nureyev as the famous gay silent screen star; and the psychedelic Altered States (1980), with a screenplay by Paddy Chayefsky, who wrote the source material novel, but who disowned his participation.

Russell’s first Hollywood film; Crimes Of Passion (1984) is an extremely erotic dream film starring Kathleen Turner as a prostitute named China Blue.

I was engrossed by Gothic (1986)  a nutty horror flick set in a villa on the shores of Lake Geneva, featuring the characters of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, and Mary Shelley, about the eerie events which led to the writing of the novel Frankenstein (1818). And check out Russell’s insane B-movie horror film The Lair Of The White Worm (1988), it’s like being on drugs.

Russell occasionally would work as an actor in film, including playing a gay British secret agent in The Russia House (1990), opposite Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Russell hated Hollywood, finding the business of making films to be corrupt and compromising. Hollywood did not love him back. He remains controversial and sometimes reviled. He was an artistic anarchist with formidable, flamboyant technique. All of the Russell’s films that I have experienced contain moments of sheer daring brilliance. He might have fared better with audiences and critics if he had made more traditional movies, but I am glad he didn’t. Russell’s final credits rolled in 2011. He was 82 years old when he left this wicked world.

Glenda Jackson, who appeared in many of his films before going on to serve as Member of Parliament for 23 years, stated:

“It’s an absolute shame that the British film industry has ignored him. It’s an absolute disgrace… he broke down barriers for so many people.”

#RealEstatePorn: New York’s Historic Waldorf Astoria To Close & Eliminate 1,000+ Hotel Rooms

Waldorf_Astoria_Hotel
The Chinese owner of the Waldorf Astoria is finalizing plans for an HUGELY expensive overhaul that would shut the landmark New York hotel for up to three years and convert as many as three-quarters of its rooms into private apartments.

Anbang Insurance Group Co.’s restoration plan calls for closing down the 1,413-room property next spring, removing as many as 1,100 hotel rooms and eliminating hundreds of hotel jobs.

When it reopens, the hotel will feature between 300 and 500 guest rooms upgraded to luxury standards. (Like it was a Best Western before?) The reduction of 1,000 Waldorf hotel rooms will lead to the elimination of a big part room-service, housekeeping and other hospitality jobs. At present the Waldorf employs about 1,500 people. The owners have reached severance agreements with hundreds of these workers at a cost of $100 million+ and the group plans to meet with Waldorf representatives during the next couple of weeks to finalize its proposal for the property, some of the people said.

We continue to explore all options. We have no definitive plans at this time.

The redevelopment costs are expected to run to more than $1 billion, and Anbang has already spent just shy of $2 billion to acquire the property last year, the biggest price tag for a U.S. hotel EVER.

After the Waldorf was sold, the State Department abandoned a decades-long tradition of putting up U.S. diplomats at the historic hotel. Last fall President Obama and state department officials didn’t stay at the Waldorf for the opening of the U.N. General Assembly and instead booked into the New York’s Palace Hotel.

According to the New York Post, “every U.S. president since Herbert Hoover” has stayed in the presidential suite at the Waldorf when visiting New York, including President Obama. Presidential artifacts in the suite include President Jimmy Carter’s eagle desk set, one of President John F. Kennedy’s rocking chairs, a gold oval mirror from Ronald Reagan, and the personal desk of General Douglas MacArthur.

Even though Hilton Worldwide, will continue to manage the hotel for the next 100 years, news of this new major renovation has sparked fears of possible Chinese cyber-espionage and surveillance.

So, where will newly elected President Hillary Clinton stay when in town? At the Palace too, where Leona Helmsley used to advertise, “Where the Queen Stands Guard”?

If it’s President Trump, he’ll being staying at his OWN golden palace, just a few blocks away. Ugh.

Demi Moore just slashed the asking price of her triplex penthouse in the San Remo on Central Park West from $75 million down to $59 million. Despite the $16 million chop, the penthouse’s new listing price is still more than twice the amount of the building’s highest recorded sale, a 6,150-square-foot, park-facing combination unit on the sixth floor with five bedrooms and six bathrooms that went in August 2014 for $26.4 million. Demi also owns a two bedroom and two bathroom apartment with private entrances from both the street and the lobby that was previously included in the $75 million asking price, but current listing details show it is now available for purchase separately at an additional cost. (Maybe, $5-6 million?)

Moore, who bought the penthouse with her ex-husband Bruce Willis, from producer Robert Stigwood in 1990, has a monthly maintenance of $17,912.85, which has about 7,000 square feet of interior living space and 1,500 square feet of wraparound terraces with panoramic park, river and cityscape vistas from the 28th floor. The maintenance for the maisonette is $3,273. The San Remo was designed in 1929 by Emory Roth with distinctive twin towers culminating in Renaissance-style Corinthian temples crowned by 22-foot-high copper lanterns, underwent a co-op conversion in 1972, and although Madonna was rejected by the board, other boldface residents through the years have included Dustin Hoffman, Diane Keaton and Steven Spielberg. Moore and Willis were smitten by the south tower:

We looked at everything on the park, Fifth Avenue, Central Park South and Central Park West, and there was just nothing like it. The location, architecture and history of the San Remo were on a completely different level.

They installed new windows in every room and, not counting bathrooms, etc., the penthouse has 14 rooms total on three levels excluding the first floor “maisonette”. The interiors of both units have been redone in a Mission motif dominated by cherry wood, which is slightly out of character for the building and would surely be redone by the new owners. The grand living room has three exposures, more than 20 feet of park frontage overlooking the boat pond. A 14-by-20-foot library has the original plaster rosette molding and bas reliefs in the ceiling. This is a potential sixth bedroom and it has the original Roth en-suite bath. (Apt #1H has both original baths.) The 24-by-17-foot dining room has a crystal chandelier and the kitchen has views north to the George Washington Bridge, with a stone center island, double Sub-Zero refrigerator and a Viking range. The media room on the 28th floor has 16-foot ceilings and access to the terraces. On the mezzanine level above the media room are a sleeping loft, full bath and kitchenette. Ms. Moore has not occupied the penthouse for several years and says:

I’m spending the majority of my time in my other homes, and this apartment is too magnificent not to be lived in full time.

Only one neighbor shares a similar perch. The owner of the San Remo’s smaller north tower penthouse? Bono. (T/Y, Tad; Photos, Tony Cenicola; via New York Times)
