In an effort to troubleshoot any worst case scenarios that might arise from the impending robot revolution, a group of scientists (funded by Elon Musk) have created a checklist of worst case outcomes, which, they warn, may sound far-fetched, but really ought to be taken seriously if we want to help safeguard humanity against disaster. On that list? AIs rounding up humans for concentration camps, committing spermicide against humanity, and nothing less than the destruction of the the planet, a significant portion of the solar system, or even the universe!!!

‘The standard framework in AI thinking has always been to propose new safety mechanisms,’ computer scientist Roman Yampolskiy from the University of Louisville told New Scientist.

But instead, he believes we should approach the threat to AI in the same way cybersecurity researchers do when looking for vulnerabilities.

He says creating a list of all the things that could go wrong will make it easier to prevent it from happening.

For instance, in one scenario, the researchers predict AI will create ‘a planetary chaos machine’ that creates a global propaganda, pitting governments against the general public.

The researchers write that AI may also ‘takeover resources such as money, land, water, rare elements, organic matter, internet, computer hardware, etc. and establish monopoly over access to them.’

In another scenario, robots could force humans to become cyborgs by requiring everyone to have a brain implant that could be controlled remotely.

‘They could also abuse and torture humankind with perfect insight into our physiology to maximize amount of physical or emotional pain, perhaps combining it with a simulated model of us to make the process infinitely long,’ the researchers say.

Another threat is that AI could commit spermicide against humankind, ‘arguably the worst option for humans as it can’t be undone.’

Pistono and Yampolskiy there may be some warning signs than an organisation is developing an evil AI, such as the absence of oversight boards in the development of AI systems.
‘If a group decided to create a malevolent artificial intelligence, it follows that preventing a global oversight board committee from coming to existence would increase its probability of succeeding,’ they say.

There was a HUGE ta-doo on Hollywood Boulevard last night for the dreary CGI-fest Alice Through the Looking Glass, which premieres this weekend. Every star EVER was in attendance and the whole street was tricked out to look like a Tim Burton wet dream. I couldn’t care less, frankly, BUT I did just come across this marvelous limited-edition collection of classic Alice in Wonderland-themed shoes from Irregular Choice, in partnership with Disney, that I’m kind of freaking out over. I would happily wear ALL OF THEM. Those little teapot heels are TO DIE FOR.

The collection will feature a mix of flats and heels showing familiar characters like Alice, the Cheshire Cat, and the Mad Hatter as well as imagery and quotes from the original 1951 film. Despite the collection’s release before Disney’s Alice Through the Looking on May 27, imagery from the live-action movies is not featured in the line.

“Disney wanted us to do the classic movie, and it is very important that you do not cross reference between the film/books etc. We had to be true to the original film only,” Dan Sullivan, Irregular Choice owner and main designer said.

Disney provided assets from the animated film for Irregular Choice to use.

“The most difficult part is that there is no leeway for error or adapting if something doesn’t look perfect. Everything has to be exactly angled and proportioned as per Disney guidelines for that character,” he said. “The best bit is that we have created shoes that totally represent Alice in Wonderland correctly to exact specification and are a homage to the characters I was inspired by as a kid.”

Nyle DiMarco, the deaf, “sexually fluid” has been Wowing the judges and the TV audience all season performed a freestyle dance with his partner Peta Murgatroyd in last night’s finale. It was set to a cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s The Sound of Silence by Disturbed.

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba called it,

“the best dance I have ever seen… in 22 seasons.

“What was so profound about it is not only do I see a man who wants to prove that he can dance… but I also see a man that is proving he can change the world through dance.”

Judge Len Goodman said,

“Well you said that was a dance for deaf people, but that wasn’t. It was a dance for everyone. Nyle, you’re a very special person. And that was a very special dance.”

I think they just won this season. Watch.

Ah, the ’90s. Skinny eyebrows, brown lipstick, and fountain pony-tails. I hated every minute of it. Well, not every minute of it. I liked Jonathan Taylor-Thomas. And Buffy. And “Waterfalls” can still make me cry. But the rest of the decade just escapes me. Artist Adrienne Salinger gets it, though. She “wanted to depict the authentic lives of young people in ‘90s America — a contrast to the perfect Beverly Hills 90210 types portrayed in the media.” She photographed teens in the most intimate space of all: their bedrooms. Yes, the infamous Bran Castle in Transylvania, which was the inspiration for the home of the world’s most famous vampire, Count Dracula, can now be yours for a mere pittance: $66 million.

According to Cosmo:

The breathtaking structure currently belongs to descendants of the Romanian royal family, who have been operating the property as a popular museum. As the country’s largest tourist attraction, some half a million people visit its spooky halls every year. But the current owners are getting older and hope to pass the estate on to someone who will continue to build up its destination status.

So: $66 million is the going price, although it may sell for much less, especially since the Romanian government has reportedly declined the offer to buy it and continue it as a museum. According to the Financial Times, the unusual property could go for as little as $13 million! I say, we all pool our money on a Kickstarter NOW, and offer up whatever we get! LET’S OWN A CASTLE TOGETHER!

Maya Rudolph, maybe THE most talented and underrated SNL alumni, was back on Saturday Night Live for the season finalé with her impression of ousted Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.

Weekend Update host Colin Jost, or “juicy baby” as she called, asked about being thrown out of office for committing budget fraud and the botched preparations for the Summer Olympics, which begin August 5. When asked if Brazil was ready for them, she answered,

“Uhhhhhh… NAH.“

Sporting event facilities and other structures won’t be ready, there’s also the big problem with water quality.

“Our rivers are full of poison from the human dookies…. we need to take one million poo-poos out of the river.”

Umph. This is hard to look at. Previously unpublished photos of Amy, OUR AMY, on the cusp of fame, looking healthy, happy, and devastatingly gorgeous. The photographer is Charles Moriarty, who first shot Amy for the cover of her 2003 album Frank.

“[The photos] are an important part of her life where she’s transforming from a young girl to a recording artist,” Moriarty told The Huffington Post. “She’s just about to release her first album. She’s experiencing brand new things for the first time. This small photographic moment captures that. I think it’s important. I think everyone should see it. I think everyone should be able to smile and remember Amy the way that I do.”

When Winehouse passed away in 2011, Moriarty wasn’t sure what to do with the photos, many of which had never been published.

“When Amy died I was approached by people to do various things, but to be honest it was a little too close to the bone and I was pretty upset at the time,” he recalled. “I really didn’t want them to be used commercially. It felt like an invasion of a private moment we’d had when we were younger, all of the sudden being brought out into the open just because this awful thing had happened. I didn’t want them to come to light that way so I held onto them.”

Now he’s compiled them into a book, Before Frank, which he hopes to self-publish with the help of Kickstarter.

“I would like people to see the book, and experience my own memories of Amy,” Moriarty concluded, “to see the young girl, just before things really started to lift off the ground for her. I think the work is special because it captures that moment of youth, raw talent on the edge of stardom, and I also think the book promotes such a great image of Amy, healthy and happy. Taylor Swift: Aryan goddess. That’s how extreme right hate groups like the KKK and Neo-Nazis see America’s sweetheart. With her blond hair, thin frame, and roots in country music she is apparently the perfect spokeswoman for their extremist ideology.

It may have started as a meme, but now actual white supremacists count themselves as fans of Swift, and some of them insist that she shares their beliefs. This is not an association the pop star has courted, but if you read her public profile selectively, there are a few elements it’s easy to see why the alt-right might find appealing: She’s never revealed her political beliefs in public, and because she started as a country singer, some people think that qualifies as conservative. And conservative, as we all know, is just a hop, skip, and a jump from Nazi.

Andre Anglin, the writer of the white supremacist blog the Daily Stormer has this to say about his people’s fascination with Tay-Tay:

“Firstly, Taylor Swift is a pure Aryan goddess, like something out of classical Greek poetry. Athena reborn. That’s the most important thing. It is also an established fact that Taylor Swift is secretly a Nazi and is simply waiting for the time when Donald Trump makes it safe for her to come out and announce her Aryan agenda to the world. Probably, she will be betrothed to Trump’s son, and they will be crowned American royalty.” (Swift is notoriously private about her political leanings, although, after Obama was elected, she told Rolling Stone, “I’ve never seen this country so happy about a political decision in my entire time of being alive. I’m so glad this was my first election.”)

Anglin is committed to Swift becoming the figurehead in the coming white supremacist uprising, saying:

“The entire alt-right patiently awaits the day when we can lay down our swords and kneel before her throne, as she commands us to go forth and slaughter the subhuman enemies of the Aryan race.”

Hmmm. I do love a juicy blind item, and this is one of the most tantalizing I’ve EVER come across. Recently, a “well-known actor” went on Reddit to anonymously rant about Hollywood, his career, his hidden homosexuality, and the distaste he has for his fans. Is it real or a hoax? I can’t quite decide. The internet has narrowed down his identity to three possibilities. I’ll list those at the end. Feel free to add in your own in the Facebook section.

During the Reddit Q&A he said:

1. I hate my fans. Appreciate them but hate them. I hate them because they hound and harass me. I am not an attention whore. I don’t tip off the paps, party, etc. I usually enjoy being by myself. I can’t even be open about being gay. What really irks me is how fans call me by this character’s name and start touching me and asking for pictures like I am one of those guys dressed like a Transformer on Hollywood/Vine. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll always chat and take a picture with a fan if they are cool or for a young fan, but most people are assholes.

2. I hate the way they ask me for money and think I have money. I see these sites where fans will say I am worth like $20 million. BITCH PLEASE. I am worth more like $4 million. And I don’t even live a lavish style. Far from it. I may get four movie offers ranging from $1 – 4 million. I probably take a quarter of that at the end. Most often I turn down the higher-paying movies because they will do the most damage to your career. Sometimes I won’t get any offers. I have tons of expenses. I have to pay lawyers, accountants, family, etc. Don’t even get me started on taxes. Also, if I ever become disabled or can’t work anymore, then I am fucked.

3. They think that I can get them work. No I can’t. That pisses me off more than anything.

4. My life is not that glam. Most famous people are not that interesting. They’re uneducated. They’re ignorant. They’re paranoid. They’re full of themselves.”

“I get scripts through my management team. Being in a huge franchise did not do much to help my career even though I had top-billing. I did some TV on my own dime and lost a ton of money.”

“[I am not out because I] would become a “gay actor” instead of an “actor.” “Gay actors” get less offers because of the concern that audiences will not believe that they can play a straight character and/or many many people still hate gays and won’t see their movies.”

“People know me mainly from the franchise that I was in but also from my time as a child actor. They often say how I still look like a teen even though I am def. no teen.”

“I don’t have friends. Many Hollywood people just want to party and many non-Hollywood people expect that your friendship will enrich them in some way. Can’t tell you how many times non-Hollywood “friends” have hit me up for money, work or contacts.”

So: Huge franchise. Annoying fans. TV on his own dime where he lost money. Hiding his sexuality.

Who could it be? (The big money is on either Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, or Taylor Lautner, with a few votes for Tom Hiddleston and Jake Gyllenhaal thrown in for good measure)….

During an appearance on Ellen, LOL-worthy Leslie Jones – along with the she-larious star-studded cast of Ghostbusters (fellow SNL girlfriend Kate McKinnon, the incomparable Kristen Wiig, and the OMG-Gilmore-Girls-reunion, Melissa McCarthy) revealed that before SNL, she was a Scientology telemarketer.

“They kind of still don’t know I’m not a Scientologist,” said Jones as the other ladies laughed on the couch next to her. “Thanks for blowing my cover Ellen.”

The Saturday Night Live comedian said she took the job because she needed to pay rent and it was a “very easy interview” because all she had to do was “act crazy.”

Badass California congresswoman Rep. Zoe Lofgren expertly shot down a transphobic witness during yesterday’s House Judiciary Committee hearing on regulatory overreach. A woman named Gail Heriot, of the United States Commission on Civil Rights, argued that trans people shouldn’t be accepted as the gender they identify with, saying

“If I believe that I am a Russian princess, that doesn’t make me a Russian princess, even if my friends and acquaintances are willing to indulge my fantasy.”

Yuck. Lofgren, thankfully, was not having it.

“I’ve got to say, I found this rather offensive, and it says to me that the witness really doesn’t know anything and probably has never met a transgender child who is going through, in almost every case, a very difficult experience finding themselves,” Lofgren said. “I think it’s very regrettable that comment was put into the record, and I think it’s highly offensive.”

When Heriot tried to respond, Lofgren shut her down.

“I think you’re a bigot, lady, I think you are an ignorant bigot,” Lofgren said.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) told Lofgren she was “out of order,” but the congresswoman refused to back down.

“We allow witnesses to say offensive things, but I cannot allow that kind of bigotry to go into the record unchallenged,” Lofgren said.

BTW, how scary is it that this Gail Heriot woman works for the United States Commission on Civil Rights?

After Elijah Wood reopened the discussion of pedophilia in the entertainment industry in last week’s Sunday Times, fellow former child star Corey Feldman has once again came forward with stories about the childhood abuses HE suffered at the hands of publicists, directors, and photographers. In a Hollywood Reporter interview, he says that although what he went through “was not actual rape,” that there were “some molestations and it did come from several hands.” His friend Corey Haim, though, endured more.

Feldman says [Haim], who struggled with substance abuse and died of pneumonia in 2010, experienced “direct rape” when he was 11. “My son is 11 now,” Feldman says, “and I can’t even begin to fathom the idea of something like that happening to him. It would destroy his whole being. As I look at my son, a sweet, innocent, 11-year-old boy and then try to put him in Corey Haim’s shoes, I go, ‘Oh my God — well of course he was erratic and not well-behaved on sets and things like that.’ What more could we expect of him really?” And he says, “I know every single person that interfered with his life and he knew every person that interfered with mine.”

Feldman continues:

“The people that I knew doing it were publicists, they were photographers for teen magazines, things like that. They would throw these parties where you’d walk in and it would be mostly kids and there would be a handful of adult men. The range was usually 10 to 16. That’s the networking, and that’s when you become pals with them and you get their phone numbers and you get their mom’s phone numbers and the next thing you know they talk to the moms and say, ‘Hey, I want to take Corey out to an event, this would be great for him, let me pick him up and take him.’ And they turn that power over right away to the publicist or the photographers.”

“Ask anybody in our group of kids at that time,” he reveals. “They were passing us back and forth to each other.”

On the subject of naming names, he is cagey.

“I would love to name names,” he says, although he does not. “People are frustrated, people are angry, they want to know how is this happening and they want answers,” he says. “I have to deal with that, which is not pleasant. But unfortunately California conveniently enough has a statute of limitations that prevents that from happening. Because if I were to go and mention anybody’s name I would be the one that would be in legal problems and I’m the one that would be sued. We should be talking to the district attorneys and the lawmakers in California, especially because this is where the entertainment industry is and this is a place where adults have more direct and inappropriate connection with children than probably anywhere else in the world.” And he says that one of the men who molested him is “still prominently in the business today.” He says he’s never confronted him about it.

I’m not going to fault a victim of sex abuse for not coming forward, as that doesn’t always work out for them, and their pain is their own, and the way they deal with it is there own. But goddamn, it seems like a lot of people know something…. and nobody is paying for their crimes. (via Salon)
