41-year-old Amsterdam-based textile designer Aniela Hoitink has been growing gowns in petri dishes – and they’re surprising wearable and fashion-forward. Very Margiela, in fact!

She recently created a 100 percent biodegradable dress – good for the environment and your skin – in one week, using nothing but discs of mushroom root.

From Oddity Central:

She needed 350 discs to make a single dress, so she spent a week-and-a-half growing them in petri dishes before they were ready to be used. Because the dress requires no cutting or sewing, there is no leftover material that needs to be discarded. The material doesn’t require hemming either, so it can be cut to suit the wearer’s requirements of length or shape. And more discs can be added to create sleeves or length. The dress can be composted when it is no longer needed, so it doesn’t actually end up in landfills.

Combining technology and microbiology, Aniela used the fungus provided by a lab at Utrecht University in Holland, and spent time observing several soft-bodied organisms that grow by replicating themselves several times over. She then combined textile elements with mycelium – the vegetative part of a mushroom. Mycelium is fast-growing and non-toxic when dried, and also water-resistant and fire proof.

At first, drying made the fungus brittle and stiff, but Aniela figured out a way to keep it dry yet flexible. After a year-and-a-half’s efforts she finally managed to produce a durable, workable material that she calls ‘MycoTEX’.

“Mycelium has been used in the packaging industry before but never in the fashion industry,” she explained. “I needed thinner layers than they use for packaging. I grow it in a petri dish in a clean environment with no other bacteria and then overlap the thin layers to create a fabric. Each sheet is a little bit like a fluffy pancake when you take it out. With mycelium you have to dry it to stop it growing but that makes it brittle and stiff, which is totally unsuitable for textiles.”

“I developed a recipe that means after drying it still remains flexible,” she added. “Then I just layer the pieces and attach to each other. There’s no need for sewing and you can see the dress comes together three-dimensionally as you’re making it. And if there’s a hole, you can just put a new patch on to cover it, without affecting the way the fabric looks.”

“I want to inspire people to think differently about fashion,” said Aniela, who worked for different fashion brands for 12 years before starting her own company, NEFFA. “It’s about sustainability and people buying clothes in a good way. People might be frightened by the idea of wearing something made out of fungi but it doesn’t feel like a mushroom. Most people say it feels like paper. It’s comfortable and nice to wear.”

Caitlyn Jenner will appear on a Sports Illustrated cover this summer wearing “nothing but an American flag and her Olympic medal”  – according to the latest issue of Us Weekly. The 66-year-old I Am Cait star set a world decathlon record at the 1976 Montreal Summer Games, and to celebrate the 40th anniversary of her win, she’ll pose with her gold medal for the first time post-transition. “She’s excited about that,” says the source.

Academy-Award-winning former child star, director, and cheerleader for Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster has been a working actor for 50 years, but –until today– had yet to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“I grew up probably 10 blocks from here, off Cahuenga, and had to pass this street every day as I was on my way to school and my mother told us if she ever found us on Hollywood Boulevard we shouldn’t bother coming home,” Foster said. “But we loved it. And it still has all of that excitement that it did as a child. The star ceremony is something that I’ve always thought of and dreamed of. I told my children when they asked me, ‘Why don’t you have a star on Hollywood Boulevard?’ I said I was waiting to have the opportunity to have one as a director. I don’t know why that was important to me; it seems silly, but that’s why I waited all these years.”

In attendance? Her Panic Room costar Kristen Stewart. Stewart was just 11 when Foster played her mother in the 2002 thriller, and has remained close to the Oscar winner, 53, ever since.

Jodi hasn’t appeared on screen since 2013’s Elysium, but says she is probably isn’t done with acting.

She tells Variety:

“I’ve had a long career; it’s been 50 years and I’ve had to take breaks and had moments where I burned out a little bit and had to find my love for it again,” she notes. “I’m always amazed — you can be sort of blasé, and then you come back and get excited about something and discover it all again. I’ve learned that the meaningfulness comes from the actor. It’s your investment, it’s up to you to really take the material and make it deeper. That’s always challenging.

“The one thing about acting that’s true is it’s either too challenging for one human being to have to do or it’s just too boring for one human to have to endure.”

As you probably already know, Madonna got A LOT of attention for the custom Givenchy dress she wore to the Met Gala on Monday night. The Internet was on fire with criticism—mostly that the dress was just not the most flattering choice for her, but also suggested that a woman of her age shouldn’t be putting their body on display in that particular way—as the dress was basically built around her breasts and butt.

From all angles, the dress looked like this:

Of course, there was more where that came from. After all the criticism she received, the Queen took to Instagram today to respond. She captioned this photo with a pretty intense statement, proclaiming that the dress she wore was a “political statement” addressing both the sexism and ageism she experiences.

Whether or not the dress is your cup of tea, Madonna is right on target in regards to the double standards in our culture. I mean, if I may speak on behalf of most gay men, many of us love seeing 50-something-year-old daddies at gay bars with their shirts off and their pants hanging halfway down their butts—but then would rather see “grandma” Madonna “put it away.”

Did you hear? A high school football player is in BIG trouble after his prank-gone-wrong resulted in him being charged with with 69 counts of indecent exposure, (69!) a Class 1 misdemeanor, and one count of furnishing harmful items to minors, a Class 4 felony. Hunter Osborn, 19, of Mesa, is accused of exposing his penis in a football team photograph that was printed in his school’s yearbook.

A Playgirl spokesperson told Naughty Gossip,

“We’re trying to reach this kid to get him in Playgirl. We want to support him as this was a hilarious prank, and people are too tightly wound. Playgirl.com would like to have him pose naked and pay his legal bills.”

Nineteen-year-old Osborn now sits at home wearing an electronic monitoring device. Senior Zack Anthony and Sophomore Brooke Bodrero says students have been buzzing about the photo for months. The school had released the photo in the yearbook and football game programs before Osborn was charged. Osborne admitted to police he exposed himself on a dare. Anthony sad,

“When people told me about it I thought it was a big thing, but when I looked at it like you cant really tell, it’s kinda hard to see.”

Bodrero said,

“At first, it was kind of like a joke, but then once we found out the consequences he has to face for this, we all feel really bad for him, and we don’t think it’s very fair.”

For his part, Osborn admits to exposing himself and told police that he’s “disgusted by what he had done.”

Uproxx echoes the many questions I’m sure we all have: How long does the flavor last? Will the Hot & Spicy let us down? This can’t be healthy. Is this healthy? When will it make it to the US? Is flavored nail polish the next trend? Can we get behind that?

Adweek spoke with the agency Ogilvy & Mather, who worked directly on the nail polish with food technologists from McCormick. “The recipe for our edible nail polish is unique and was specifically designed to hold the flavor, but to also dry with a glossy coat similar to normal nail polish,” creative director John Koay said. “This campaign is designed to be intriguing and fun to increase excitement around the KFC brand in Hong Kong.”

Right now the polish is more of a social media campaign than anything else, with Hong Kong consumers being encouraged to vote on which flavor they want to go into mass production.

The ever-iconic Janet Jackson, who turns 50 this month, has some exciting baby news: Her new single “DammnBaby” just dropped. Also: SHE MIGHT BE PREGNANT! *record scratch* Whaaaaaaaat?

Jackson, who is married to Qatari billionaire Wissam Al Mana, has not confirmed the reports or even addressed them, although back in April, she announced she postponed the second leg of her “Unbreakable” world tour as she and her husband worked on a family.

“I thought it was important that you be the first to know. My husband and I are planning our family, so I’m going to have to delay the tour,” she told fans in a video released on Twitter. “Please, if you can try and understand that it’s important that I do this now. I have to rest up, doctor’s orders. But I have not forgotten about you. I will continue the tour as soon as I possibly can.”

And though her reps are remaining mum, sources close to Jackson say she IS in fact preggers. Jackson herself may have dropped a hint Wednesday when she tweeted a preview of her new video for DammnBaby. Perhaps more tellingly, she also posted an outside tweet that read, “On the same day news broke that she was expecting her first child, Miss Jackson premiered “DammnBaby,” a throwback dance video that fans have been clamoring for” without denying the story. There’s been rumors swirling around the Internet for years about Colton Haynes and his sexuality, but he pretty much shut down all of that in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. Let’s just cut to the chase: he basically came out in a statement that feels refreshingly honest coming from a Hollywood actor.

He started off discussing the time earlier this year when he answered a fan’s question on Tumblr about hiding his “secret gay past.”

I should have made a comment or a statement, but I just wasn’t ready. I didn’t feel like I owed anyone anything. I think in due time, everyone has to make those decisions when they’re ready, and I wasn’t yet.

He continued:

I felt like I was letting people down by not coming forward with the rest of what I should have said. People who are so judgmental about those who are gay or different don’t realize that acting 24 hours a day is the most exhausting thing in the world. It took me so long to get to this point, but I’m doing so good. I’m happier than I’ve ever been, and healthier than I’ve ever been, and that’s what I care about.

Hard news to swallow so early in the morning, I know, but he just posted a photo on Instagram of his pretty, pretty ponytail in hand. And as upsetting as it is, just keep telling yourself it’s all for a good cause. Harry’s donating his hair to the Little Princess Trust charity, which provides real hair wigs for children who suffer hair loss due to cancer treatment. God bless him, but THE HORROR REMAINS.

Last February, you no doubt recall, he teased the world with news that he had cut those luscious locks, but, in fact, just lopped off a few split ends and added a few face-framing layers. It was hardly worth the tears I shed. But now. NOW. Who KNOWS what in the hell he’s done! He might be BALD for all we know.

What does Harry look like now? Does he have a mohawk? Did he save some of his curls on top? Or, DOES HE LOOK LIKE ZAYN? Who knows. We’ll have to wait and see for ​that​ big reveal, and for his new red-carpet pose since he can’t run his fingers through his beautiful mane anymore.
