#BornThisDay: Double Diva Dose. Streisand And MacLaine

streisandmacalaine

April 24, 1934– Shirley MacLaine has six Academy Award nominations, with a well-deserved win for Terms Of Endearment, (1983), 20 Golden Globe nominations with seven wins including Best Newcomer in 1955 and the Cecil B DeMille Look Alike Award in 1998, plus she is the author of 15 books, all bestsellers, on top of that, she sings and she dances.

MacLaine was discovered on Broadway dancing in the musical The Pajama Game (1954) when she famously went on as the understudy for Carol Haney who had broken her ankle. Her first film was Alfred Hitchcock‘s The Trouble With Harry (1955). She continues to work into the second decade of the 21st century. Attempting to count her filmography, I lost track at 75 films. MacLaine has received the highest film industry honor, the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award in 2012, and a Kennedy Center Honor in 2013.

MacLaine’s brother is an actor also. His name is Warren Beatty. They have never worked together, but that is something I would pay to see, especially if they were to play senior citizen lovers.

She talks to her rat terrier Terry and her dog talks back. In 2011, she gave a frightfully furious, funny performance, one of her best, in the terrific film Bernie, and (spoiler alert!) a messy, unfocused portrayal of Cora Crawley, the Countess of Grantham’s American mother on Downton Abbey. But mostly, she is simply fabulous. I love her life and her films, television apperances and her work in films. She was simply sparkling in her second Oscar nominated performance in Billy Wilder’s cynical, yet tender The Apartment (1960), opposite her best co-star Jack Lemmon. Favored to win that year, she lost to Elizabeth Taylor for Butterfield 8. MacLaine stated:

“I thought I would win for The Apartment, but then Elizabeth Taylor had a tracheotomy…”

My favorite MacLaine role would have to be Doris (a thinly disguised Debbie Reynolds) in Postcards From The Edge (1990). It is my understanding that The Gays just adore her.

“I’ve made so many movies playing a hooker that they don’t pay me in the regular way anymore. They leave it on the dresser.”

shirleydogx-large streisand

April 24, 1942– She sings, she dances, she acts, she directs, she does the screenplays, she writes the scores! Barbra Streisand has had five Academy Award nominations with two wins, including one as a composer. She has 16 Golden Globe nominations with eight wins including the Cecil B DeMille Look Alike Award in 2000, plus nine Grammy Awards. She is one of only a handful of performers to have an Oscar, Emmy, Tony and Grammy. All her statues and medals are tastefully arranged in a special temperature controlled Art Deco display case in her hermetically sealed basement at one of her Malibu houses. Streisand is the only artist to have a #1 album in six different decades. In 2011, Streisand was presented with the Film Society Of Lincoln Center’s Charlie Chaplin Award, presented to her by her pal Bill Clinton. Like MacLaine, Streisand has been given the American Film Institute Award and a Kennedy Center Honor.

Streisand is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with more than 68.5 million albums in the United States and with a total of 145 million records sold worldwide, making her the bestselling female artist of all time. She is the only artist who is currently a member of ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), Screen Actors Guild/ Federation Of Television And Radio Artists, The Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts And Sciences, and Actors’ Equity Association, as well as the weekend manager of the Beverly Hills Hadassah Thrift Shop.

Her stepson is hunky actor Josh Brolin. In 2011, Streisand published a frightening coffee table book about her questionable interior designing taste. I passed on that one. She gave her very cute, talented son Jason Gould a role in her underrated film Prince Of Tides (1991). She talks to her dog Sammy and he talks back. In 2012, Streisand starred with Seth Rogen in the film The Guilt Trip (2012). Although I love a good two-Jews-On-A Road Trip flick, I passed on this one too. My sources tell me that she is still on track to star in a new film version of my favorite musical Gypsy. At this rate Streisand will be the first Mama Rose to use a walker.

“I’m not weird, just different from people who aren’t different.”

She has a very famous nose. As a person with a pronounced proboscis, she immediately became a personal hero to me after the first time I saw her spellbinding performance on The Tonight Show in April 1961 singing Harold Arlen‘s A Sleepin’ Bee. I was a rather savvy seven year old gay boy. I knew my show business legends like Judy Garland, Ethel Merman and Lena Horne, but I had never seen or heard anything like Streisand. I was hooked.

Of that nose, critic John Simon wrote: “It towers like a ziggurat made of meat”.

Unlike the real life Fanny Brice, who had work done to broaden her appeal (Dorothy Parker wrote: “Brice cut off her nose to spite her race.”), Streisand decided early in her career that she would never mess with the schnoz. That nose was inseparable part of her persona.

In the 1960s, Vogue Magazine dubbed Streisand “a whole new taste in beauty.” She posed on the cover of Playboy. Streisand is also a diva almost without peer, and we love her for that.

When an emotional Streisand accepted her Oscar for Funny Girl, tying with Katharine Hepburn for The Lion In Winter (the first exact tie in a principal Academy Award category), she purred: “Hello, gorgeous!” (her opening line in Funny Girl).

Ironically, for all the control she has demanded of her screen work, her highest grossing film is Meet The Fockers (2004), which did more than $517,00,000 worldwide. Who knew? My favorite Streisand role would have to be Doris in The Owl And The Pussycat (1970). I hear that The Gays really love her. I know I do. She represents the way we were.

This pair of Gay Icons and Fashion Icons share a birthday today, April 24th. They are both liberal stalwarts and outspoken old broads. In a long standing tradition, they spend their birthdays together. I would like to be a fly on the wall at that tea party.

deaths2016
Queen Elizabeth just turned 90 and in 1992, she had what she referred to as her “annus horribilis”, which is not a terrible butt affliction but rather latin for “horrible year.” That horrible year saw the Prince of Wales separate from Lady Diana, and her sensational portrayal in Andrew Morton‘s biography. And then the Princess Royal divorced. The Duke of York‘s freshly estranged wife, Sarah, graced the tabloids topless and had her toes sucked by an enthusiastic “financial adviser”. But with the exception of Diana, they all lived.

Yes, sadly people die every day, but most of them we will never hear of. We don’t know most famous people either, but we feel connected to them by their work. 2016 is stacking up to be one of the worst years for star deaths, and we’re barely a third of the way through. Book-ended by Prince this week and Bowie in January, there were MANY more than this, I’m sure. Here are some you might recognize like Doris Roberts who went at 90 and Nancy Reagan at 94. We should all be so lucky to live that long.

#LGBTQ: Was the “Mona Lisa” Based on daVinci’s Gay Lover, Salai?

The Mona Lisa in Paris.

Many think this sketch by daVinci is of Salai

Many think this sketch by daVinci is of Salai

One art historian thinks so. He thinks he’s cracked the code to the Mona Lisa‘s elusive smile was inspired by da Vinci’s gay lover.

Art historian Silvano Vinceti, after examining an infra-red analysis of the famous painting, claims that the was based on two people in da Vinci’s life: a rich Tuscan merchant’s wife, Lisa Gherardini, as most historians would agree and the artist’s apprentice (and alleged lover) Gian Giacomo Caprotti, known to da Vinci as Salai or “Little Devil.”

In an interview, Vinceti, who heads the research group National Committee for Cultural Heritage, explained that the infra-red findings prove that “the Mona Lisa is androgynous–half man and half woman.”

You see it particularly in Mona Lisa’s nose and in her forehead and her smile.

Vinceti’s claims are based on a close study of other paintings of Salai, who lived and worked with da Vinci for nearly twenty years.

Monna Vanna – a nude version of the Mona Lisa.

Monna Vanna – a nude version of the Mona Lisa.

Juicy though Vinceti’s analysis is, many art experts aren’t sold on the idea that the painting was inspired by the artist’s young apprentice. Martin Kemp, professor emeritus of the history of art at Trinity College, Oxford says,

This is a mish-mash of known things, semi-known things and complete fantasy. The infra-red images do nothing to support the idea that Leonardo somehow painted a blend of Lisa Gherardini and Salai.

Kemp, is currently at work on a new book, Mona Lisa: The People and the Painting, adds that no one knows for sure what exactly Salai looked like. (Although many have said the drawing at the left is Salai)

“Giorgio Vasari (a contemporary painter and a chronicler of Renaissance artists) described him as a pretty boy with curly hair, but that was a standard type of the era. It featured in Leonardo’s work long before Salai came on the scene.”

It is commonly believed that upon Leonardo’s death in 1519, Salaì inherited several paintings including the Mona Lisa, which might back up the theory that Salai was the model for the painting.

NYC scene queen Ladyfag brings back the ultimate gay Sunday night fête with new weekly Battle Hymn. If you’re looking for a flashback to the good ol’ days where homos, heteros, drag queens, club kids and every creature in between live in harmony on the dance floor, this is the place to see it all, in its semi-natural habitat. The 10,000 sq feet super club Flash Factory (formerly Shadow Nightclub) has been completely re-worked, taking its new inspiration from abandoned churches decor, with a sinners’ soundtrack of disco, classic house music and tech house. Hosts include Amada Lepore, Avi Vichner, Grandfather Hector Xtravaganza, MILK (RuPaul’s Drag Race), Kyle Farmery, Princess Magnifique, Sussi, Ryan Burke and more! Resident DJs Honey Dijon and The Carry Nation.

Ladyfag:

Music is a unifying force. Stripped down of all gimmicks & armed with a next level sound system and lighting, Battle Hymn continues the long tradition in gay culture of going to ‘church’ on Sundays, the night begins with 9pm-midnight dedicated to disco & classic house, with the second half of the night going harder with a blend of house & tech house. Opening night was inaugurated with house legend Todd Terry making the crowd dance till the lights came up! The gospel according to the dance floor.. Battle Hymn.” (via Flaunt)

#BornThisDay: Artist, Cy Twombly

Twombly-006

April 25, 1928, Edwin Parker Twombly Jr. should have had the life of a Virginia Southern gentleman, but instead he became one of the last century’s most important artists, and the lover and comrade of fellow artist Robert Rauschenberg. Cy Twombly was also the pal of the great artistic circle of the 1950s NYC Avant-Garde: musician John Cage, Dancer/Choreographer Merce Cunningham, and artists Ray Johnson and Jasper Johns. It is one of my favorite periods for art and popular culture and the history of the city.

In the mid-1950s, Twombly and Rauschenberg did the grand tour thing in Europe. Rauschenberg returned to NYC and became very, very famous. After that, basically Twombly stayed, settling in Italy, just in time for the focus of the Art World to shift decisively from Europe to NYC. Life in Italy and its impressions of classicism informed Twombly’s work the rest of his life and was symbolic of his idiosyncrasies, his unique sense of the modern but also the ancient.

He shunned publicity throughout his life and he ignored his critics, who constantly questioned whether his work deserved a place at the forefront of 20th century Abstractionism. Twombly’s paintings, favorites of The Husband and mine, thrillingly viewed in museums in Italy and the USA, are huge, complex and richly detailed, with scratches, erasures, paint drips, graphite, containing fragments of Italian and classical verse amid scrawled phalluses. His works references the High European Culture of the past and mostly ignores modern American issues. With so many of Twombly’s works having classical and literary associations, with titles such as the School Of Athens and with hidden lines by Sappho, Ovid, and Keats, you might think that his paintings are given to a sort of seriousness, but for me they are filled with mischief and humor. Search hard and you can spot those phalluses appear among his squiggles, although, while studying his giant canvases with my boyfriend in the 1970s, he insisted that they were not penises at all, but carrots and spaceships.

As a reaction to a prejudice against left-handedness, right-handed Twombly began to draw “as if with his left hand”. By literally denying himself dexterity, he purposely diminished his control of his creative process. He took this even further during his military service as a cryptographer in the early 1950s by working at night, in the dark.

He brought a distinctive, thrilling, brand from references to the high culture of the past, only occasionally referring to contemporary events or issues. Yet, despite this ignoring of the present, Twombly had early successes by offering his clever alternative to the popular Abstract Expressionism and he still managed to keep going long enough to come back into fashion.

One of the aspects of Twombly’s work that is so appealing is that childlike application of paint. Each painting is so charming in the primitive way that colors are layered on top of one another. In many works, you can see Twombly’s hand prints.  Others have drippings. Bright, striking, what’s not to love about his unabandoned experimentation with color?

The prolific Twombly became one of the major figures in late 20th century art and his paintings now hang in the most important museums including MOMA, The Louvre, even my town’s Portland Art Museum. Even in his lifetime, Twombly’s painting sold in the millions of dollars. After his death in 2011, the prices hit the stratosphere. In 2014, his work, Blackboard, sold at auction for $69.6 million.

It’s easy to understand why Twombly’s work is deemed mysterious, inaccessible, or ineptly executed.  It’s experimental.  It’s fun.  It’s warm. It accesses a primitive form of expression.  Studying a Twombly at MOMA, the woman behind me said to her companion: “I don’t get it. My toddler could do this…” Even a child can scribble and play with paints, but few of us can do much better than that. Or can we?

Twombly_cnd-articleLarge

When Twombly left this world in 2011, taken by that damn cancer at 83 years old, he had become a figure of unique mystery in Modern Art: an American who chose to live in Italy, an abstract artist inspired by myth and history, a man who rarely spoke to the press, and when all is said and done, the smartest and most emotionally eloquent artist of his era.

Twombly’s work is a celebration of spontaneity, creativity, and boldness of style that isn’t concerned with right or wrong, good or bad.  Art (and fashion) can remove limitations. Art can make you feel gay, daring, more like yourself.  Only happier.

Living in Italy, Twombly met Tatiana Franchetti, a pretty Italian aristocrat. They married in NYC, in 1959, but lived in Rome. But, at the same time, Twombly began a relationship with Nicola Del Roscio who remained his assistant, archivist and lover for more 50 years. Twombly kept a home and studio close to Del Roscio’s place in Gaeta, on the Tyrrhenian Sea, where he painted some of the most noted canvases.

Susan Sontag, herself a closet case, wrote famously in her Notes On Camp (1964):

“Many things in the world have not been named, and many things, even if they have been named, have never been described.”

When Twombly’s obits were written, even the one in the NY Times, his relationships with Rauschenberg and Del Roscio were not mentioned, although they somehow found a way to include his wife, who died the year before, and mention of their children and grandchildren. But, last year, a NY Times’ T Magazine had a terrific and colorful feature on Del Roscio with many telling details of their life together, plus wonderful photographs of their two homes in Italy.

Twombly:

“I have my pace and way of living, and I’m not looking for something. Artistic is something I don’t think about. If it happens, it happens, but don’t bother me with it. I couldn’t care less.”

SNL’s Tribute to Prince Had Some Fans Thrilled & Others Pissed Off…

snlSNL‘s Prince tribute show that aired instead of a rerun Saturday Night has gotten mixed reviews. Fans are complaining on social media (what’s new?) about the second half of this week’s broadcast, which was a compilation of vintage sketches built around The Prince Show, with former cast member Fred Armisen impersonating the pop star. The show started off with an intro from an emotional Jimmy Fallon.

Included was a bootleg of an invitation-only jam (below) that Prince did for SNL’s 40th anniversary show, with former cast members Fallon and Maya Rudolph, among others, joining onstage for Let’s Go Crazy at the after-party at the Plaza Hotel.

NBC turned to its vault of sketches later in the show that spoofed the musician — to the dismay of many fans. Armisen doing his doe-eyed Prince impersonation, opposite Maya Rudolph as Beyonce and, in one bit, Shia LaBeouf as Tobey Maguire (see below) had some seeing red, not purple.

He told TheWrap the day after the show,

I have never stopped loving Prince. “I’m so grateful for that moment. I can’t believe I was in the same room as him.

You can’t please everybody. Here are two of the amazing performances, plus one of the said sketches. Did the spoof’s bother you? (Apparently, Prince himself liked them at the time.) Watch & tell us what you think on Facebook.

Human Rights Campaign in Mississippi

boycott
Bryan Adams canceled his concert in Mississippi in protest against what he called an “anti-L.G.B.T.” law, and Sharon Stone decided not to film there. In North Carolina no less than, Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Starr, Pearl Jam and Ani DiFranco have already canceled shows in response to a law regulating transgender bathroom access.

The celeb response is drawing attention, but it’s the travel industry in each state that is more concerned about the everyday tourists who have already begun canceling trips or planning trips elsewhere.

In Georgia, widespread protest from corporate America, particularly the entertainment industry, proved crucial in killing its own religious freedom bill. On March 28, Gov. Nathan Deal vetoed House Bill 757 following opposition from studios like Disney and Marvel. The state, which is the third-most popular shooting location in the U.S., is home to major franchises like The Hunger Games, Iron Man and Ant-Man, all of which have been filmed in the state. Often called the “Hollywood of the South” or “Y’allywood,” Georgia’s film industry brought in a reported $5 billion last year.

But according to the New York Times, North Carolina and Mississippi’s tourism are suffering big time,

Both states have been hit by hotel cancellations from tourists who spend a combined tens of billions of dollars annually, and though the effect is difficult to quantify so early on, local hotels, tourist boards, industry associations and government officials fear that a boycott will continue to dampen business. Making matters tougher for the businesses, the Foreign Office in Britain has issued an advisory for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender travelers going to the two states based on the laws.

The effect is already being felt in North Carolina, which last month passed a law that limits transgender people to using bathrooms that match the sex on their birth certificates. Tourism is a crucial driver of the economy in the state, the sixth most-visited in the country, where domestic travelers spent a record $21.3 billion in 2014, according to Visit North Carolina, the state’s tourist board.

In Charlotte, which has a large convention center, more than 20 conventions have either canceled or are no longer considering holding their event in the state, resulting in a loss so far of around $2.5 million, according to the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority.

Travel industry executives and officials in North Carolina and in Mississippi are attempting to counter the message that they say the legislation delivers. Mr. Hughes on April 12 introduced the Mississippi Economic Tourism and Recovery Act to the House, which would prevent businesses and individuals from discriminating against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Marriott International’s president and chief executive, Arne Sorenson, is one of several heads of hospitality companies who have signed an open letter to Gov. McCrory of North Carolina asking for the repeal of the bathroom law. That letter was written by the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest gay rights organization, and Equality North Carolina, the state organization working to secure equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender North Carolinians.

The Mississippi travel industry is also expressing a welcoming attitude in dealing with the effects of the bill that was passed there on March 30. Linda G. Hornsby of the Mississippi Hotel and Lodging Association said:

The first thing we did after the bill was passed was to put up a banner on our website that says, ‘Everyone Is Welcome Here,’ because that’s how we feel. This law is not what Mississippi is about.

As they say, good luck with that. Change your laws to stop the hemorrhaging. Until then, boycott Mississippi and North Carolina.

Irene Dubois

Age: 22

Location: Houston, Texas

About:

“I started doing drag as an escape from the rigid gender roles that influence the culture here in Texas. When I was 17, I had my eyes opened to the world of drag by RuPaul’s Drag Race, and immediately started playing with makeup. Over the past few years, I’ve developed my drag character, an alien trying to infiltrate human society, but who is having a difficult time negotiating the subtleties of human interaction. I’m very inspired by the different masks that we wear as humans, and how that changes over time and varies by culture. I’m working on a project right now that explores the story of Adam and Eve through the lens of drag, and how female beauty ideals are taught to women as a tool for influencing men.”

Woman Killed by Train While Hunting for Kentucky’s Mythical ‘Pope Lick Monster’

The Pope Lick Monster, who reportedly lives under the train trestle and lures visitors to their death by crossing the tracks into oncoming trains, has struck again, this time killing Roquel Bain, 26, of Dayton, Ohio. She was in the city with her boyfriend and the two had booked a tour of Waverly Hills, an abandoned sanatorium in Louisville that many believe is haunted.

While they were there, the couple heard the legend of the Pope Lick Monster – a creature who looks like a cross between a man and a goat and  lives under the Pope Lick trestle, next to the Fisherville neighborhood east of Louisville. The beast is rumored to hypnotize visitors and trick them into crossing the trestle, luring them to their death as they get hit by an oncoming train. Bain and her boyfriend went up the trestle on Saturday evening and were walking on it when a train arrived.

From the Daily Mail:

They realized they didn’t have time to make it to the other side and decided to hang off the structure’s sides, Arnold said according to KLTV.

Bain didn’t move fast enough and was stuck by the train, then fell 80 to 100 feet from the trestle.

She died of multiple blunt force injuries, the coroner said. Her boyfriend survived without injuries.

Officials believe they hadn’t consumed any alcohol or drugs.

The Louisville Metro Police Department’s homicide unit is investigating Bain’s death.

She worked as a surgical assistant according to a badge found in her purse, the Courier-Journal reported.

Many mistakenly believe the Pope Lick trestle is abandoned, but resident Michelle Burns told KLTV she sees trains crossing it every half hour.

‘If they’re halfway through and the train comes, you either have to jump, run or basically get it,’ resident Denise Harris added.

The train that hit Bain belonged to the Norfolk Southern Railway according to the network.

Yes, the golden boy, Zac Efron isn’t perfect but he’s the first to point this out. Running down the beach for the new Baywatch film, Efron bites the sand hard. But then of course, he tells the world about it so we love him even more. Hey, this isn’t his first time falling head-first into the sand. He pulled the same move in Dirty Grandpa — except (BONUS!) he was naked the time.

It’s your musical PSA of the day. The video, made in partnership with the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, opens with Gay for Play star Todrick Hall in his bedroom, writing in his diary, wondering if he should believe his new boyfriend when he says he’s HIV negative.

“I wish someone could send me some sort of sign,” he says wistfully. Suddenly, singer Kory DeSoto is there in his doorway singing “Hakuna Truvada! What a wonderful phrase!”

“Hakuna Truvada,” sings wowlebrity Danny Franzese, who is suddenly  there in his bedroom as well. “It ain’t no passing craze!”

“It means less worries for the rest of the gays,” sing the two of them together. “It’s our HIV prevention key—Hakuna Truvada!”

The trio then walk around WeHo singing about the advantages of the drug along with the importance of regular STI screening. They even run into Drag Race alumnae Willam at the LGBT Center, where she administers an HIV test for Hall.

Fabulous. Watch the fun below. (via NewNowNext)

Yes, John Barrowman’s husband, Scott Gill, unknowingly walked into the frame with his penis fully exposed while the actor was chatting like on Facebook. Barrowman was discussing the Palm Springs weather (exciting stuff) when Gill and his husband’s penis appeared!

Everybody just saw you naked! Did you all see him naked?

Uh, yep. You can skip the chit-chat and cut to the full-frontal by going to 1:55 mark. Watch.
