Um, Is Chris Crocker Dating Aaron Carter?

NOT a headline you explicated to read this morning, is it? But that’s the scuttlebutt we’re hearing. It all began yesterday when the proto-YouTube phenomenon and former tween sensation appeared to be canoodling together on Chris’s Instagram feed. Is it love? Or just two attention-whores (and I say that with LOVE) looking to increase their social media numbers? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. (via ONTD)

Aaron found his candy. 💅🏼

Sharon Needles Tells Nightclub Crowd How RuPaul’s Drag Race Changed Her Life

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 4 winner Sharon Needles performed at Queen Kong in Los Angeles over the weekend, belting out “Sweet Transvestite” from Rocky Horror, before launching into an unexpectedly sweet speech about how Drag Race changed her life for the better.

No tea, no shade, no pink lemonade, I got a lot of opportunities out of Drag Race. And I’m going to let you know one thing: Nothing makes me feel more fulfilled or more like a human being, or more like I might possibly have a soul, than being able to perform in clubs like this… I never in my wildest nightmares thought that I would have the opportunity to perform in places like this, and I’m so thankful everyday for you guys…. I led a really unlucky early life, then led a really lucky later life, and I thank my hard luck, my tenacity, my love for the arts, but I also thank the audiences that applaud people who do outsider art, who do weird shit… I especially thank people who love the show RuPaul’s Drag Race. Jasmine Masters had the audacity to go online today and say the RuPaul’s Drag Race RUINED drag. I think RuPaul’s Drag Race opened the eyes of BILLIONS of Americans…

Janet Jackson‘s album Control started with one of the most iconic and straight-to-the-point feminist statements ever recorded in pop music: “This is a story about control: my control. Control of what I say, and control of what I do.” It’s hard to imagine today with the term “classic” being thrown around every 5 minutes whenever a pop star drops a new single on the Internet, and even harder to imagine the significance and influence Control had on pop music when it was released in 1986. But the album itself gave rise to six spectacular Janet music videos (“Nasty,” “Control,” “The Pleasure Principle,” “Let’s Wait Awhile,” “What Have You Done For Me Lately,” and “When I Think Of You”) that not only set the bar for female pop in general, but were the first of a massively influential catalog that ultimately broke down the door for black female pride to take the front seat in pop music.

Bow down. Gag on these throwback videos from Control, and clock the legendary Diana Ross herself introducing Janet Jackson when she performed “Control” at the 1987 American Music Awards!

Totally Cuckoo-Bananas Avante-Garde Dance Costumes from the 1920s – If the Clubkids Only Had THESE

Jawdropping nuttiness from 1920s Hamburg – dozens of wild, Expressionist dance costumes that look like “retro robots and Bauhaus knights.”

Lavinia Schulz and Walter Holdt were the dancers who created 20 full-body costumes for performances between 1919 and 1924, all accompanied by avant-garde music, often composed by Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt. Made of a creative mix of fabric, cardboard, papier-mâché, plaster, leather, and other found objects, these unbelievably fabulous costumes were acquired by the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg in 1924, the very year the images were shot, and not rediscovered in their boxes until the 1980s.

According to the website Hypoallergenic: “One reason the striking costumes might have been left to gather dust was the startling and sad end to Schulz and Holdt’s story. Both were in their 20s, and had earned little money from their artistic work. In financial ruin, on June 18, 1924, Schulz shot Holdt, and then turned the gun on herself. They both died from their wounds.”

Recently, their story has finally come to light, and the restored costumes are on view in the MKG’s Sammlung Moderne galleries. For the reopening of those galleries in 2012, there was a performance reanimating the costumes, reviving them after nearly a century in obscurity.

Take a gander below. Your mind is about to be blown. Almost 100 years ago and they were doing shit that Leigh Bowery would DIE to wear.

Meet Angela Morley, The Two-Time Oscar-Nominated Trans Composer

angela-morley-interview

Lots of talk this year about Antony Hegarty being the first trans person to be nominated for an Academy Award, as co-writer of the song “Manta Ray” from documentary Racing Extinction. And while we love Antony, and applaud her Oscar nod, composer Angela Morley already had the distinction of being the first trans nominee. And she did it back in 1974. Morley received two Oscar nominations: One for the score of Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner‘s music for The Little Prince (1974) and the second for the Sherman brothers Cinderella musical, The Slipper and the Rose (1978).

She also has three Emmys, two for Julie Andrews specials — Julie Andrews in Concert (1987) and The Sound of Christmas (1990) — as well as having scored iconic series like Dallas, Dynasty, Wonder Woman, Cagney & Lacey and Falcon Crest. Pretty fabulous huh?

Angela died in 2009. From HuffPo:

The Guardian‘s obituary noted that Morley had suffered “a lifelong mental struggle with gender identity, a fact that, for all those years, he had kept sealed tightly inside himself.” Eventually, Morley underwent gender reassignment surgery in 1972, only two years after marrying her second wife, Christine Parker. It was through her that she’d been able to cross that “terrifying” gender border.

What many don’t know is the crucial role Morley played in the composition of one of the most iconic scores of all time: Star Wars. John Williams, who just picked up his 50th Oscar nomination for scoring J.J. Abrams‘ latest foray into that galaxy far far away, often turned to Morley for help with his compositions and his score for the 1977 George Lucas classic was no exception. It’s a fact that’s been hiding in plain sight for years.

“Do you know the scene in Star Wars where Luke goes down into the Death Star trench and the voice says ‘Use the Force, Luke?'” Morley asked journalist Kenneth LaFave ahead of a 1997 concert appearance alongside Patti Lupone and Yo-Yo Ma, “That’s my orchestration.” Her work with Williams, which went largely uncredited, also included work on Superman, E.T., The Empire Strikes Back, The Right Stuff, Karate Kid and The Verdict. Her orchestrations and “source music” can also be heard in Schindler’s List and in Home Alone.

It’s perhaps fitting than in a year when Antony Hegarty nabbed a Best Original Song nomination and Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander were recognized for their work on The Danish Girl we’ve been prompted to revisit Morley’s story and return her, perhaps, to the place in LGBT history she’d always earned.

There’s a great article about her at A Sketch of the Past if you want to learn more about this overlooked icon.

Season 7 LEGENDS-IN-THE-MAKING Miss Fame and Violet Chachki are giving us serious Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell vibes (or maybe it’s Roxy Hart and Velma Kelly) in their new video “I Run the Runway” (written & directed by Ali Mahdavi). It begins with our girls getting ready backstage at a nightclub, each slathering on their oh-so-exquisite beat (“Pain is beauty/if you want to slay”). Before they take the stage, Violet has an odd little make-out sesh with an out-of-drag Fame, and Fame has an odd make-out sesh with an out-of-drag Violet. They then  DESTROY the club runway with their “faces sculpted by the hand of God”, driving the crowd of sophisticated Parisians into a FRENZY.

There’s a Vogue-inspired bridge:

“Marlene beauty/Norma Jean/Evangelista/Mansfield queen/Being Bettie/Dovima down/Moncler illusion/Garbo’s crown”

…before ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE. They circle each other like sharks in chum-infested waters, smearing each other’s makeup, tearing at each other’s gowns, ripping off earrings and wigs… before ultimately making out with one and other, shirtless and makeup free.

Whew!

Watch the MADNESS below.

22-year-old George Shelley of the UK boy band Union J (he’s the Harry of the group), announced on YouTube this week that he has dated both boys and girls in the past, but rejects labels in defining himself because he sees them as “old-fashioned.”

“I’ve been on a personal journey and I want you to be part of that journey from now on. I want to start 2016 with a clean slate. I don’t feel that I should hide anything. I went into the jungle and it gave me a lot of time to reflect on what’s important to me – and it’s important to me that I can be myself and I don’t feel I should hide on me.

“I’ve been reading a lot of speculation online as to whether I’m, straight, gay or bi. It’s all these labels and it’s a little bit old-fashioned and this is why I’m not going to label it myself.”

“I’ve had girlfriends that I’ve loved, in amazing periods of my life, but I’ve also had boyfriends.”

“I want you to know that whether I decide to be with a girl next or be with a guy next it’s because I love them.

“So yeah, there it is. I’ve not changed, I’m still me, I’m still the same person I’ve always been, I’m just becoming a little bit less scared of being myself, and that makes me quite happy.”

In the tradition of those annoying “100 Years of Men’s Underwear Styles” and “100 Years of Canadian hairdos” – may I present to you with an evolution video that actually kicks ass? “100 Years of Zombie Evolution,” in which a really amazing makeup team transforms one man into half a dozen different zombies types. From 1932’s White Zombie (with its potion that turns still-living men into mindless minions), through the reanimated corpses of 1968’s Night of the Living Dead’, to 1996’s viral zombies, the early 2000’s rabid and super-fast zombies, and beyond– this is pretty rad. February 6: It’s YOUR Birthday, Bitch!

#BornThisDay: Mamie Van Doren

Van Doren at 80, Photo by Alan Mercer

February 6, 1931Mamie Van Doren:

“I came to Hollywood determined to follow in Jean Harlow‘s footsteps, but I was determined not to die young. My hope was to endure. And endure I have.”

It is unfair to lump Van Doren into a convenient little group along with Marilyn Monroe & Jayne Mansfield. She has a kind of Rock N’ Roll sensibility that the other girls lacked, plus her story is not tragic. And, most important, she is still with us and looking like a million bucks.

She was born in South Dakota as Joan Lucille Olinder.  Her family moved to LA when Van Doren was 11 years old. She was named Miss Palm Springs 1949, which brought her to the attention of Howard Hughes, at the time, in the film business.  They enjoyed an affair that lasted for the next half decade, even when she was married to Jack Newman, the owner of a men’s clothing company. That marriage was over after he tried to throw her from a hotel balcony while on their honeymoon. Around the same time, Van Doren was working at the El Rancho Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas where she dated a gangster in Al Capone’s mob. She was also briefly engaged to champion boxer Jack Dempsey in 1951, but according to Van Doren he was a “lousy lover”, something that she took rather seriously.

Van Doren became a contract player with Universal Pictures in 1953, with the studio giving her the new moniker Mamie Van Doren,  named after the new First Lady on the very same day that President Dwight Eisenhower was inaugurated, and for Charles Van Doren who was embroiled in a scandal after being given all the answers to questions on the most popular television quiz show.

Van Doren says that she had her way with Rock Hudson after they went on a studio arranged date to the 1953 Photoplay Awards. While filming Yankee Pasha (1953) she enjoyed the special company of director Joe Pevney and its star, the yummy Jeff Chandler. She had a liaison with fellow actor Jack Palance, and prolific songwriter Jimmy McHugh (Let’s Get Lost), at the time columnist Louella Parson’s boyfriend, making a lifetime enemy of the notorious gossip writer.

Van Doren had a string of affairs in the 1950s, including Dragnet’s Jack Webb, Denmark’s Prince Alex, abusive millionaire drunk Nicky Hilton (Elizabeth Taylor’s ex), before she became engaged to big band leader Ray Anthony. Confidential Magazine threatened to run a story claiming that Van Doren and her mother had a side business as call girls, but her lawyer had the story stopped.

She had a son with Anthony, before they split up after Van Doren had a fling with Elvis Presley in 1957. The next year she had her best screen role yet with the Clark Gable/ Doris Day comedy Teacher’s Pet. During filming Van Doren enjoyed the special company of the aging Gable, before moving on to actors George Hamilton, Yves Montand and Laurence Harvey. She even dropped LSD with Cary Grant.

I am not just coming up with the list of men in Van Doren’s life out of my imagination. In her terrific memoir Playing The Field: Sex, Stardom, Love, And Life In Hollywood (2013) and on her candid blog, Van Doren is very forthcoming about the men in her long life. She happily gives details about her affair with actor Steve Cochran:

“Steve and I launched into an affair that had the cast and crew of The Beat Generation (1959) whispering behind their hands. No sooner would we finish a scene than we would disappear into my dressing-room for a quick fuck while they set up the next shot.”

She tells about how, when she was married to Anthony, he was in for a surprise while he was snooping in her dressing-room:

“When he opened the door without knocking, he found me sitting astride Steve having sex in a chair. Location never mattered much to me. If I had the urge to do someone in an elevator or a taxi or a swimming pool, that’s where it happened.”

In 1960, she hooked-up with Tony Curtis while he was filming Spartacus on a neighboring sound-stage, bedded Johnny Carson, Eddie Fisher, and producer Robert Evans, and still found time to divorce her husband. In 1963 she became engaged to baseball player Bo Belinski, but the wedding was eventually called off after she agreed to pose for Playboy Magazine.

Those swingin’ 1960s showed Van Doren more fun with men, including a longish affair with Rock N’ Roll singer Johnny Rivers and Steve McQueen. She made headlines in 1965 as the latest plaything of NY Jets quarterback Joe Namath, and then briefly, with singer Tom Jones. In 1966, she shocked fans by suddenly marrying California Angels pitcher Lee Meyers, who was 19 years old. The couple divorced the next year.

During the Vietnam War, Van Doren entertained the troops, doing tours with Bob Hope in 1968 and 1970. She worked hard and gave a great deal of her time visiting injured soldiers at hospitals. Of Hope she bluntly writes:

“That son of a bitch flew into Vietnam during the day to do his shows and spent his nights in safety in Thailand, and made millions off the shows by selling them to television when he returned”.

Her affair with Burt Reynolds in 1972 ended when Van Doren married Fluor Corporation executive Ross McClintock, a man she says she never really loved. This one was annulled in 1973. The next year she met actor Thomas Dixon when they toured with the stage production Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? which rival Jayne Mansfield had done on Broadway after Van Doren turned it down. Five years later, she married Dixon and this marriage stuck. They are still together.

In the memoir, Van Doren insists that she never cheated on her husbands, but she does mention affairs with actors Donald O’Conner, her costar along with Francis The Talking Mule in Francis Joins The WACS (1954), plus Van Johnson and Warren Beatty. She had her way with NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin, commenting in the book:

“After all, a man who could make it to the moon, could make it with me anytime.”

And he did.

I love her a bunch. I am a fan because Van Doren is a real survivor. She represents the stereotype of Blonde Hollywood Bimbo, while tossing away that cliché by being in charge of her own life, loves and career. She likes men, and she had her pick of boyfriends and five times she married them.

Unlike most of her contemporaries, she is forthright in talking and writing about her sex life. I admire that.

Van Doren is a good friend of World Of Wonder and insiders that know her have told me that she is a delicious delight of a human being. She has given solid performances, often with a deft sly comic touch, in all sorts of films, including titles like: Born Reckless (1958), High School Confidential (1958), Beautiful Legs Of Sabrina (1959), Sex Kittens Go To College (1960) and Vice Raid (1960). She was in prison in Girls Town (1959), provoking the censors with a shower scene. She played the original woman in The Private Lives Of Adam And Eve (1960), wearing just well-placed fig leaves.

Van Doren is a Buddhist, an author, recording artist, business woman, animal rights activist, and humanitarian. She has always been outspoken about Women’s Rights and Equal Rights for Gay people. For her 85th birthday, she posted a nude photograph taken by her husband.  She gives good Tweets and has an active page on The Facebook. My kind of girl. I was planning this post already but I decided to put it up today in honor of Mamie Van Doren‘s 85th birthday. She’s featured on two great examples in this small sampling from a private collection of over 200 rare, vintage posters printed for drive-in movie theaters. Haute Campe‘s collection of posters from the 40s-70s, originally went through a one distributor called National Screen Service, hence the “property of N.S.S.” at the bottom of 99% of the movie posters printed. The graphics, typography, colors and lurid glam here are still inspiring designers, photographers and even drag queens today. (The promos for Season 8 of RuPaul’s Drag Race feature a vintage, “time-gone-by” glamour/camp.) There are bad girls, good-time girls, lesbians, “gay deceivers” and every sort of politically incorrect innuendo you can think of, so lighten up and let your inner freak loose. You can see even more here. The bidding starts at just $100 in many cases and the auction ends February 8.
