Frank Sinatra *for use with Nancy Sinatra piece*

December 12, 1915Frank Sinatra:

“May you live to be 100 & may the last voice you hear be mine.”

My favorite sound in the entire world is a baritone in song & my favorite baritone voice of all time belongs to Francis Albert Sinatra, who was born on this very day, 100 years ago.

I understand that he was a lout & a bit of a thug, but no matter what he was like as a human being, I find his pitch, cadence, phrasing & musicality to be the best of all time.

I stand by my choice of his 1967 collaborative album Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim to be a perfect album, in a league with Dusty In Memphis (1969), Revolver (1966) & Remain In Light (1980). A sleek & sexy collection of songs by Jobim, plus 3 covers from The Great American Songbook, this album is virtually flawless.

In the 1960s, the USA was in a fever over Brasil’s Bossa Nova sound. Performers such as Jobim, Joao Gilberto & Astrud Gilberto had a tremendous influence on our Pop & Jazz music. Stan Getz, Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald & other artists absorbed or collaborated on the Brazilian boom.

Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim opens with the best cover of The Girl From Ipanema with Sinatra trading verses in English with Jobim in Portuguese. Sinatra’s voice is quiet to the point of whispering. If you are only familiar with the Swing Era Sinatra with his full voiced vocals, you may find the spare renditions surprising. I love a hot summer night with a cool drink while I listen to Sinatra & Jobim seduce me with Dindi, Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars, & Meditation. The 2 musical greats change up the old American standards Change Partners, I Concentrate On You, & Baubles, Bangles & Beads into timeless tropical splendor.

I am willing to put his mid-1950s to early 1960s Capitol Records “concept” albums with the Nelson Riddle arrangements: In The Wee Small Hours, Songs For Swingin’ Lovers, Come Fly With Me, Only The Lonely, & Nice N’ Easy in the same category. These recordings are from Sinatra’s “I lost Ava Gardner” period. His singing is at its most vulnerable, intense, & brilliant. No one has ever phrased a lyric like Sinatra. Most of these songs were already old standards by this period, sung hundreds of times by hundreds of singers. But with Sinatra, it’s as if you are listening & understanding the lyrics for the first time. This period is my favorite Sinatra, with his most mature musical personalities: the lonely saloon singer & the swaggering, sophisticated swinger.

“Basically, I’m for anything that gets you through the night- be it prayer, tranquilizers or a bottle of Jack Daniels.”

7 songs sung by Sinatra were nominated for Academy Awards, with 3 wins. The man himself won 14 Grammy Awards, the first in 1959 & the last in 1996. Plus he has been given the Grammy Hall Of Fame Award & Lifetime, & Legend Awards. He took home 4 Golden Globes, The Kennedy Center Honor Award (1983), Presidential Medal Of Freedom (1985), NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award (1987) & an Honorary Doctorate Of Fine Arts from my alma mater Loyola Marymount University (1984). His other awards & accolades provide too huge a list, even for me who likes lists.

I also find Sinatra to be a talented & a nimble dancer, even holding his own with Gene Kelly. He was an underestimated actor & screen presence, winning as Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in From Here To Eternity (1954), plus a nomination for Best Actor for playing a junkie in The Man With The Golden Arm (1955), & critical acclaim for his great work in The Manchurian Candidate (1962). I still find his work to be engaging & spry in the musicals: High Society (1956), Pal Joey (1957), Guys & Dolls (1955), & On The Town (1949).

Last year, on his 99th birthday, I caught the curious propaganda short film The House I Live In (1945) starring Sinatra. Made to oppose anti-Semitism at the end of WW 2, it received an Honorary Academy Award & a special Golden Globe award in 1946.

I was living in LA in the early 1970s & I was fortunate enough to be an acquaintance of actress/singer Betty Garrett. She once told me that because of their past brief affiliations with the Communist Party & thanks to her husband’s involvement with people from The Group Theatre, Garrett & actor husband, Larry Parks, became embroiled with the House Un-American Activities Committee, although only Parks was forced to testify. While Parks admitted he had been a member of the party, he had refused to name others, although it was widely assumed that he had.  Parks was front & center on the Hollywood Blacklist.

Garrett also had trouble finding work, although as the mother of 2 young sons, she did not mind being unemployed as much as Parks did. Garrett related to me that the only person that would see them socially in Hollywood was Sinatra, who defied Hollywood convention & was open in his support of the couple with friendship & money.

Sinatra & his pals played a major role in the desegregation of Las Vegas hotels & casinos in the 1950s and 1960s. Early in the Civil Rights Movement, Sinatra played a benefit show at Carnegie Hall for Martin Luther King, Jr. He led his fellow Rat Pack members & fellow record label artists in boycotting venues that refused entry to black patrons. But, despite his strong public & private work on behalf equality, he was still known to make racist jibes at African American artists, including his own pal Sammy Davis, Jr. at their concerts, & he was a bully toward gay actor Montgomery Clift while filming To Here From Eterinity. But for a man of his times, Sinatra seemed to be a stand-up guy.

Sinatra was a favorite of my parental units & they still have a large collection of his LPs. On Saturday nights, they would make a cocktail & pop on some Sinatra on the Hi-Fi & ask me to scram. After listening to his recordings for the past 60 years, I am still moved when I listen to that wondrous voice.

I consider about how well he treated The Parks & his outrage at the racism faced by Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr. & other black entertainers. When I think about his difficult personality, I frame my feelings with Sinatra’s own words:

“Being an 18-karat manic-depressive, & having lived a life of violent emotional contradictions, I have an over-acute capacity for sadness as well as elation.”

Sinatra recorded & toured well into his 70s, even after a series of announcements of his retirement & as many farewell concerts as Cher. Sinatra took his final curtain call at 82 years old in 1998, gone too soon from too much Jack Daniels & too many Camel unfiltered cigarettes. In this crazy world we live in, he still managed to sing duets with Celine Dion & Barbra Streisand even though he was dead.

Sinatra’s last words: “I’m losing…”.  Not a phrase he needed much while he was working in show biz. His gravestone reads:

“The best is yet to come.”

Ugly Christmas Sweaters are now a thing everywhere this time of year, but this one is VERY specific. The Etsy shop, YourSassyGrandma, is getting a LOT of play thanks to Beautiful Breastfeeding‘s post on Facebook. This boob revealing/camoflaged reindeer number that MIGHT be convenient for nursing Moms had the comments section making Merry, with Hayley Ranson Mullins saying;

“Everyone will be fine with this until you take the nose off and put a baby there haha.”

It’s available in multiple colors and patterns and may not have originally been intended for nursing, once you put it in that context, it’s hard to see it any other way. But they do have other versions like this off-the-shoulder number and a nipple-baring sweater for dudes which would probably be the hit at any UCS party. (Baby sold separately.)

This holiday season, Opening Ceremony founders Carol Lim and Humberto Leon were one of three fashion designers chosen to decorate the ground floor of the White House and they got my old pal, artist Mark Gagnon, to create the seven custom-made tree toppers. This year’s “Timeless Traditions” theme was supposed to showcase long-held customs across the country while highlighting major moments in American history. Carol and Humberto decorated the White House Library, which houses a collection of over 2,700 books and they got Mark to make seven tree-topping book covers. When I saw the pics, I had to find out some more details and got in touch with Mark to ask him some nosey questions.

12339202_10153126562801428_5344581714474688520_o-1

Amazing opportunity, Mark. How did you get involved in this project?
Over the years working with David Hoey at Bergdorf Godman, I have become good friends with many of the creative people working there. Johanna Burke and I both continue to contribute to Bergdorfs. She has created her own business doing these kinds of visual endeavors. She knew Su Barber who works for Opening Ceremony and put Su in touch with me.

What kind of parameters were you given?
None really, I just had to work with the quotes given by the White house. I also was asked to look at Olympia Le tan as source for inspiration. They asked for a few of the books to be openly animated. Other than that is was free range and I took advantage of it.

So, what’s your favorite topper…
I actually personalized two of them. The piece with the birds is dedicated to my 95 yr old Aunt. She is a World War II veteran and recently fell and broke her shoulder. She signs every card and letter with this little doodle of a bird. I used her drawing as the image for the cover. The pink book has a silhouette of my mom on it. She has had a few bad health issues as well and I wanted to make her laugh by telling her her portrait is hanging in the White House!

Will you get them all back or do they go in some White House archive?
I think I am getting them back…

…hopefully with a letter from Michelle or Barack!
Would be sweet. Why don’t you contact your friend Michelle and suggest it!

OK. I’ll text her right now…
(J/K)

We were both teasing, but I DID meet the FLOTUS last year and my Facebook profile pic is us together, so my friends are FOREVER reminded of this fact. Check out more of Mark’s fantastic work here and if you’re in New York City, oooh and ahhh over Bergdorf Goodman‘s amazing windows. Chances are Mark has his hand in their creation too.

Here’s an early Christmas present. In a funny wardrobe fail, a present, which was decorating the Wheel of Fortune set, gets caught on Vanna White‘s dress and she unknowingly drags it across the board. Pat Sajak like it SO much he had to play it back twice. It’s a gift just keeps on giving. (Oh, in case you were wondering Vanna has been on the show since the beginning in 1982 – 33 years!) Watch.

Rose Siggins, the actress who played Legless Suzi on FX‘s American Horror Story: Freak Show, died this morning in Denver, Co., She was 43.

Siggins’ manager, James Mullen, told The Hollywood Reporter of Siggins’ passing and also made an announcement early Saturday on a Go Fund Me page that has been set up for the actress’ children.

“I’m sad to report that Rose has passed away this morning around 7:30am. All funds raised will now be directed to final expenses and the continuing support of her children.

I suppose Elsa Mars said it best: ‘The death of a beloved monster is always a sorrow, but never a surprise. If oddly-formed organs or a random physical anomaly doesn’t claim them, then it is at the sheer density of their blaze. A carny’s life burns and brighter than most. It is bound to extinguish sooner.'”

FX Networks and AHS producers issued the following statement to THR:

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of Rose Siggins. She was beloved by everyone in the AHS family. She was a kind person, a loving mother and a very talented actor. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this time.”

The actress, who did not have legs, appeared as herself on multiple programs, including Ripley’s Believe It or Not and Extraordinary People, before her season on Ryan Murphy’s AHS. According to her IMDb page, Siggins was also filming documentary Schlitzie: One of Us, to be released next year. Through a post on the Rose Siggins Trust page, Mullen told fans:

“Rose Siggins is why we’re here – an infinitely strong woman who isn’t strong enough this time. She, Luke, and Shelby need our help through this tough time. Rose is currently in the hospital and the outlook on her current health is grim. All funds raised will be used for the care of her children Luke and Shelby now. Once a path for care is set it will then be used for recovery, medical, and any other related expenses.”

She is survived by her children Luke and Shelby. you can contribute to her Go Fund Me page here. (via THR)

#BornThisDay: Dick Van Dyke

December 13, 1925Dick Van Dyke:

“As you get older, you care less & less what other people think.”

I hold the half-hour television sitcom in high esteem as an art form.

My Top 10 Of All Time:

I Love Lucy (1951-57)

The Bob Newhart Show (1972-78)

The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970-77)

Will & Grace (1998-2006)

Roseanne (1988-1997)

The Golden Girls (1985-92)

Frasier (1993-2004)

Newhart (1982-90)

Friends (1994-2004)

The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961-66)

Van Dyke writes in his memoir, My Lucky Life In & Out Of Show Business (2011) that his life was nothing other than one long string of lucky breaks.

Born in small town Missouri to a housewife & a travelling salesman, Van Dyke was a shy kid who used humor as his way of dealing with the tough spots in life.

During WW2, Van Dyke enlisted in the US Army Air Corps where he found work as a radio announcer. After the war, he formed a double pantomime act with a buddy, The Merry Mutes. They mimed to Bing Crosby & Doris Day records.

Van Dyke took the act to Hollywood where he persuaded the producers of a program titled Bride & Groom to let him marry his high school sweetheart on-air, saving the cost of the wedding & honeymoon.

He found work in radio & television in Atlanta & New Orleans before signing a 7 year contract with CBS in the early 1950s, but he was let go after just 3 years.

Van Dyke landed a small role in the short-lived Broadway musical revue Girls Against The Boys (1959). His big break came when, against all odds, he was cast in the new Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie (1960) with Chita Rivera, Paul Lynde & Charles Nelson Reilly. The show was a big box-office hit, & Van Dyke received a Tony Award. He would reprise his role in the film version in 1963.

Van Dyke took 2 weeks off from the run of Bye Bye Birdie to shoot the pilot for a new sitcom. Originally titled Head Of The Family, with different actors playing the roles. In the original version, Carl Reiner, who created the show based on his own experiences as a TV writer, played the lead. The first pilot was a dud, & Reiner revamped the show with Van Dyke playing the central character. It was television alchemy.

Earlier, I Love Lucy & Make Room For Daddy were TV series set in the milieu of show business, but my love for The Dick Van Dyke Show has always been fueled by its more realistic, but hilarious look at the inner backstage workings of the making of a television series, the fictitious The Alan Brady Show. Reiner had formerly been a writer & performer on Sid Caesar‘s crazy Your Show Of Shows.(1950-54) & he drew from his own life on that show for the new The Dick Van Dyke Show. It centered on the lives of head TV writer Rob Petrie & his pretty wife, Laura, played by Mary Tyler Moore. Rose Marie & Morey Amsterdam played Petrie’s co-workers on the program. Rob, Buddy, & Sally write comedy material for Alan Brady, played to perfection by Reiner, & the premise provides a built-in way for them to be making constant jokes. In the early 1960s, I was so impressed with the premise, that I dreamed of being a joke writer. I still do.

Though The Dick Van Dyke Show  was not an immediate hit, it eventually developed quite a following. Van Dyke showed such sweet, good natured humor & likeability in his performance. He won 3 Emmy Awards for his work on the series. Decades later, I still watch the show in syndication, although I have every episode memorized. Van Dyke:

“When we did The Dick Van Dyke Show, it was like an improv group. Carl Reiner, the writer & producer, had a rule: ‘I don’t care how crazy it gets as long as it could happen in real life & you react accordingly.’ The minute you try to be funny, you’re not.”

With the success from The Dick Van Dyke Show, Van Dyke was able to move to feature films. He worked in many genres & proved a smart dramatic actor & a reliable, if unexpected, villain in films like The Runner Stumbles (1979) as an alcoholic priest, as a crook in Warren Beatty‘s Dick Tracy (1990) & an evil night watchman in Night In The Museum (2006) & its sequels. But he will always be most noted for his work in musical films Mary Poppins (1965), with Julie Andrews, & Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang (1968).

Van Dyke’s problem with his film work was that The Dick Van Dyke Show had set the bar so high for television comedy & Rob Petrie was such a familiar & beloved character, that matching that standard in his movies was a tough task, & audiences had trouble accepting him as anybody else.

But, I admire his breezy, charming performances in the 1960s era comedies: What A Way To Go! (1964) with Shirley MacLaine, The Art Of Love (1965) with James Garner, & Some Kind Of A Nut (1969). But, nothing matched the TV stuff.

Van Dyke has been forthright about his personal problems:

“I was an alcoholic for about 25 years. In the 1950s & 1960s, everybody had their martini, everybody smoked incessantly. The funny thing is that all through my 20s & early 30s, I didn’t drink at all. Then we moved to a neighborhood full of young families with the same age kids & everyone drank heavily, there were big parties every night. I would go to work with terrible hangovers which if you’re dancing is really hard.”

He had a couple of stays in rehab:

“I had suicidal feelings, it was just terrible. But then suddenly, like a blessing, the drink started not to taste good. I would feel a little dizzy & a little nauseous & I wasn’t getting the click. Today I wouldn’t want a drink for anything. But I do occasionally think of taking a nice drag on a cigarette.”

In his recently released book Keep Moving: Tips & Truths About Aging, Van Dyke writes:

“My whole generation has disappeared on me. My contemporaries, not in talent but in age, were Paul Newman, Jack Lemmon, Rock Hudson. All gone.”

My friends, Michael and Zach were visiting from DC on Friday and we stayed-up talking, laughing and drinking until 5:30AM in my apartment on Saturday. We met for brunch on Saturday, a block away at one of the last vestiges of the old West Village, Tortilla Flats, for a much needed hangover cure. (No hair of the dog, but the brunch specials are all $8.95!) We got a nice corner booth, some guacamole and chips and then who walks in? Oh hey, it’s Santa! Oh, and another Santa… and a bunch of elves, and ANOTHER Santa! OH, SHIT, IT’S SANTA CON! Yes, THE most dreaded day –outside of St. Patrick’s Day– on New York City streets. And we were not alone in hating it. My buddies went to the Whitney, I got a facial at SoHo House (saw real reindeer in front of The Standard hotel!) and then ran home to avoid the ensuing madness. MANY places in NYC are not so Santa-friendly, and posted notices banning the hordes of drunken St. Nicks. Santaphobes!

A helicopter, working for the MTV reality show, The Challenge, crashed in Argentina yesterday. Both people on board were killed. It crashed as it flew over the reservoir at Potrerillos de Mendoza dam about 620 miles northwest of Buenos Aires. Gianni Vernier, security minister for Mendoza province said the pilot and a technician died. Searchers were unable to retrieve the bodies Saturday because the wreckage was nearly 200 feet below the surface. The cause of the accident was under investigation.

MTV issued a statement saying the helicopter was working on The Challenge, a co-production of MTV and Bunim-Murray Productions, and was flying to a shooting location when it went down. MTV said only two people were on the helicopter and neither was a cast or show crew member. It was the second deadly helicopter accident this year in Argentina involving a reality show.

Last March, two helicopters working on the TV survivalist show Dropped collided while filming over the same rugged terrain in northwestern Argentina. All 10 people on board died in the crash. Among the dead were three noted French athletes — pioneering sailor Florence Arthaud and Olympian swimmer Camille Muffat and boxer Alexis Vastine.

Flowers, not boring old ornaments, are the latest must-have decorations for the chic Christmas tree this year.

Flowers must be the last thing that comes to mind when you think about decorating your Christmas tree. However, many people decided that tinsel and bulbs aren’t enough this year. Some use fake flowers, others prefer real or dried flowers, but the result is always gorgeous!

While it’s probably impossible to tell who came up with this awesome idea, many were inspired by a “DIY Floral Tree” tutorial posted on Design Love Fest.

I imagine my step-mother must be in hog-heaven right about now. For more, check out #FloralChristmasTree on Instagram.

Everyone Everywhere Is Completely Losing Their Chill Over This Super Hot Shirtless Jogger

Luckily for the Internet, reporter Tahman Bradley of WGN TV Chicago caught a super hot shirtless jogger Ethan Renoe while out for a run along Lake Michigan on Sunday, December 13. It was a moment of destiny. Bradley was reporting on the unusual warm weather of the season just when Ethan was out jogging shirtless—and the exchange between them has pretty much created the biggest thirst-trap of the year.

When asked why he’s running shirtless in the warm winter rain, the hot jogger (Ethan) tells the reporter: “It’s too wet to wear a shirt.” We’re not mad. (We just need some of that wetness because we are now thirsty AF.)

Check out the exchange that set the Internet (and my heart) on fire:

BUT WAIT. There’s more. Ethan is returning to television soon (thank goodness) so check back here for more video!
