Israeli jewelry designer Naomi Kizhner has designed jewelry pieces that are inserted into the wearer’s veins, then harnesses the kinetic power from the body’s involuntary movements to produce electricity. “I approach the human body as a resource,” she says. “There are lots of developments of renewable energy sources, but the human body is a natural resource for energy that is constantly renewed, as long as we are alive.”

These gorgeous pieces do JUST THAT.

The collection, named ‘Energy Addicts’, features invasive pieces of gold jewelry that have golden spikes at each end, which are inserted into the wearer’s veins in two places. The continuous flow of blood turns the golden wheel inside the design, eventually creating sufficient kinetic energy to produce electricity that is sufficient to light up an LED and soon maybe even mobile devices.

Naomi created the pieces as a part of her graduation project at Jerusalem’s Hadassah College.

The collection consists of three pieces – the Blood Bridge, the Blinker, and the E-Pulse Conductor. The Blood Bridge is inserted on the veins of the lower arm, while the Blinker fits on the bridge of the nose, harnessing the energy created while blinking. Each time the wearer blinks, there is an increased flow of blood to the area around the eyes and the statement jewelry collects that energy. The E-pulse Connector fits on the upper back, collecting energy from the spinal cord nerves.

File under #QuestionableChoices. A new-and-improved Viper Room (the legendary club on LA’s Sunset Strip), is back and being billed in publicity material as “an adult playground for young musicians, Hollywood’s elite, and industry insiders.”

The club, of course, was were Hollywood heartthrob River Phoenix died after accidentally overdosing on a cocaine-heroin speedball on Halloween night in 1993. To commemerate that event, the club is offering of a drink called “the Phoenix,” named after River Phoenix, which a publicist says is basically a Moscow mule made with tequila by Casamigos, the company co-owned by George Clooney. How… touching?

Also, as you enter the club, there’s a big “R.I.P. River Phoenix” on the ceiling by street artist/Keith Haring acolyte Louis Carreon.

The club’s publicist and a representative for the artist both say the “tribute” was Carreon’s idea.

Says LA Weekly:

Publicity material describes the art as “a one of a kind mural, paying homage to the Viper Room’s glory days … ”

We’re just surprised there’s not a chalk outline of the place where Phoenix’s body was scooped up by the paramedics who took him to Cedars Sinai Medical Center, where he was formally pronounced.

The club could start a new tourist destination — the Walk of Shame.

We just hope they don’t start selling “River Died Here” T-shirts.

Leonardo DiCaprio is looooong overdue for an Oscar, having lost so many times he’s become a tragic meme.

And the little lost-boy heartbreak you see on his face in the GIF (below) has become internet shorthand for despair.

BUT! Things maybe looking up for the old boy! FINALLY! His performance in The Revenant is causing all sorts of Oscar buzz, yet again, but this time he might finally have a chance. Or so says some writer from Vanity Fair.

 After recent press screenings in New York and LA, it was reported that nearly all of the reactions seem to revolve around “Give Leo that Oscar.”

The only thing could stop him, the article goes on to say, is the film’s violence, since a lot of people walked out during the screening because of that. Still… despite said violence, rumours of backstage drama (and all of Leo’s “I suffer for my art” campaigning) could drag voters in.

“If people really want to see DiCaprio win an Oscar as badly as the Internet does, no amount of violence will keep them away.”

More than anything, the Oscars love to see you work for it, from the titanic productions of The Lord of the Rings and Titanic to the physical challenges of Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot or Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything. One look at the photos of DiCaprio in The Revenant and you know he’s passed that test.

The Revenant arrives into a loud and crowded December of new releases, and will box-office battle with everything from David O. Russell’s still-under-wraps Joy to Quentin Tarantino’s fellow lengthy western The Hateful Eight to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s hard to imagine huge amounts of people choosing a mauled Leonardo DiCaprio over Han Solo, but The Revenant is operating with a different math, assuming the “you will not believe what happens in this movie” factor will drive curiosity well into the new year. The Oscar race, it seems, has gotten just as crowded as we expected.

His competition this year seems rather weak – most likely Bryan Cranston (for the little-seen Trumbo), Johnny Depp (who was good in the otherwise underwhelming Black Mass), Michael Fassbender (in the criticality reviled Steve Jobs), and Eddie Redmayne (for The Danish Girl– his only real competition). I think he really has a chance! What do YOU think?

Time magazine announced their person of the year today, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, not Donald Trump, thank the heavens. And in the middle of the outrage over Trump’s ridiculous plan to keep Muslims out of the U.S., Time magazine also just released a video of a bald eagle attacking him. It’s from a photo shoot in August for a cover story which was the brainchild of photographer Martin Schoeller. The bald eagle is a 27-year-old bird named Uncle Sam –of course– but he wasn’t such a big fan of Trump. Smart bird. Watch.

RuPaul’s Drag Race season 7 contestant, Kandy Ho was born when she imitated Madonna at a local talent show. It was not the best presentation, but Kandy had the attraction for art and knew she wanted to be a star. A few years passed by and then some friends wanted to imitate the Pussycat Dolls. Kandy was offered the role of Kimberly. She rejected the offer, but eventually gave in. The Dolls performed at the Puerto Rican Gay Parade in San Juan, P.R. The crowd went crazy when and that’s when the journey began.

Kandy entered the pageant world, and after a couple of losses she won Miss P.R Open Sunday 2010. This allowed her the opportunity to travel all over — Arizona, Dominican Republic, North Carolina, etc. In 2013, another beauty pageant win in Puerto Rico’s Miss Generation 2013 took Kandy to the next level. Kandy went on to compete for the title of Miss Continental 2013. She placed in the top 12 and won Best Swimsuit on prelim night.

For this RuPaul’s Drag Race season 7 queen it’s not only about being a drag queen or a showgirl, but being a good example for those who don’t understand what drag is or those who see it as a joke. She cherishes every single moment she’s on stage performing. Kandy Ho is a star on the rise so stay tuned and keep enjoying this sweet and juicy Kandy because she’s going to ROCK YOUR WORLD!

There are legends and there are legendary guys, like Stephen Saban, who eschew the spotlight to write about those legends. One of the most beloved is Stephen, who among other things in his long career, was the first editor of The Wow Report. Our James St. James says;

“When I moved to New York, he was the reason why I wanted to become a writer in the first place because he made it so glamorous. Working with him was such a learning experience and a dream come true.”

He was also a founding editor of Details magazine (which sadly, just announced it is closing up shop), with a column that detailed the era’s famous parties and peeps. In an article from the NY Times, Saban’s influence is celebrated, noting support from famed personalities likes RuPaul, Dianne Brill, Karen Finley and Michael Musto, who said;

“He was the daddy of the downtown scene, the one who made it cool to be cool.”

Stephen’s many friends, former colleagues and admirers are rallying to wish him a happy 70th and to raise money for his recovery from pancreatic cancer.

Say what you will about cultural critic Camille Paglia, she doesn’t pull punches and she’s not afraid to tip sacred cows. In a scathing essay for The Hollywood Reporter, she says that Taylor Swift‘s relentless girl squad mentality doesn’t empower women at all… it, in fact, promotes elitism. And furthermore, it’s distinctly out of step with modern feminism. POW. So take THAT.

“In our wide-open modern era of independent careers, girl squads can help women advance if they avoid presenting a silly, regressive public image — as in the tittering, tongues-out mugging of Swift’s bear-hugging posse,” wrote Paglia. But ‘Swift herself should retire that obnoxious Nazi Barbie routine of wheeling out friends and celebrities as performance props.”

She goes on to say:

“Girl squads ought to be about mentoring, exchanging advice and experience and launching exciting and innovative joint projects. Women need to study the immensely productive dynamic of male bonding in history. With their results-oriented teamwork, men largely have escaped the sexual jealousy, emotionalism and spiteful turf wars that sometimes dog women.

“If women in Hollywood seek a broad audience, they must aim higher and transcend a narrow gender factionalism that thrives on grievance. Girl squads are only an early learning stage of female development. For women to leave a lasting mark on culture, they need to cut down on the socializing and focus like a laser on their own creative gifts.”

I mean: She’s not wrong, but is she being a bit harsh on the girl? The Guardian tells Paglia to “lighten up”:

Even those who are not fans of her music should feel for Swift. In many ways, she cannot win. Her confessional brand of songwriting has seen her frequently portrayed as the “crazy ex-girlfriend”: manipulative, calculating, and obsessive; now the “fascist blonde” is doing female bonding wrong as well. In the same essay, Paglia called the singer’s persona a “scary flashback to the fascist blondes who ruled the social scene during my youth”.

Swift’s girl squad of real-life friends and associates is, of course, something of a marketing gimmick (a pop star who engages in gimmicks – who would have thought it?) But to hold her stage production up as a totemic symbol of the hollow nature of modern female relationships seems somewhat unfair.

It’s 1993. Rave culture is in full effect. NASA (at Club Shelter) was all the rage. All the cool kids were tripping balls in their oversized Liquid Sky jackets, elephant bells, and…. welder’s goggles? So, what we have here is rare video footage from old pal Scotto Osman of NASA children leaving the club at 6AM, looking a bit worse for the wear, with bleary eyes and crooked smiles. Nothing like daylight and a camera in your face as you’re walking out of a rave in the morning, right? But, oh it will take you back. Maybe. Probably. I’m not sure if this is as magical to you as it is to me. I remember these faces. Spent a lot of time in a lot of bathroom stalls with many of them. Fell in love with many more. I see Tom Mello, Odi, and Philly Dave (RIP)… Ah, good times. Funny to think all these kids are probably all in their late 30s, early 40s now and approaching middle age. HA! TIME!

The Yorkdale Centre in Toronto, Canada, has an incredibly yummy silver daddy Santa Claus (played by Paul Mason) who models fashionable Christmas looks from designers such as John Varvatos, Hugo Boss,  Salvatore Ferragamo, Montcler, and Burberry. The internet has, rather predictably, gone bananas over him, with #FashionSanta trending on Twitter and literally thousands of pictures proliferating Instagram and Snapchat.

Fashion Santa is available for photos through December 23 and with every selfie using the #YorkdaleFashionSanta hashtag, the Centre will donate to a charitable cause.
