Kirsten Dunst - World of Wonder

Kirsten Dunst – the 90’s teen-dream (who paved the way for all of today’s millennial girls, LBR) is now (coming for her Emmy) playing Peggy Blomquist – the nutty Minnesota beautician slash housewife with a secret (and a motive) on FX’s second season of the critically acclaimed Fargo.

Kirsten Dunst - World of Wonder
And she’s bloody good.

Kirsten Dunst - World of Wonder
The Edit interviewed Kiki Dunst on her latest television endeavor and styled her in these boss ass bitch looks that we’re living for here at WOW.

Check out what she had to say (and these amazing shots photographed by Bjorn Looss and styled by Tracey Taylor).

Kirsten Dunst - World of Wonder
“It’s almost like therapy between the character and me, that’s how I work it out, I go really… [Laughs] I don’t want to say esoteric, because that seems like it’s far away from you, but when I’m making a character I feel like a witch making a brew.”

Kirsten Dunst - World of Wonder
“I chip in for certain things because [studios] won’t [pay]. But it’s my job to look nice and wear a good dress, right? No one cares about a boy in a suit; they’re like, ‘He’s hot,’ that’s it, done. It’s all about dresses.”

Kirsten Dunst - World of WonderKirsten Dunst - World of WonderKirsten Dunst - World of Wonder
“Acting, to me, yes, you live in the moment, but you better prepare for that moment real hard and know what is going on emotionally with that person. So I like to know [my character’s trajectory] and it was difficult signing onto something where I didn’t.”

Transformations: Shea Couleé

Today we have with us in the Transformation studios the lovely Shea Couleé (from Chicago) who gives me a makeover that at first glance appears to be a very gay Easter egg, but is actually based on the street art of Parisian graffiti artist Kashink. It’s slightly tribal, slightly circus-themed, and COMPLETELY fabulous. Watch the episode below.

Zayn Malik Has Never Looked Hotter Than He Does On The New Issue Of “Fader”

Fader has published the first interview with Zayn Malik since he left the world’s biggest boy band, One Direction, and OH MY GOD Zayn has never looked this hot before than in these photos by photographer Francesco Nazardo. Like, we need to talk about this. It’s serious.

First of all, it’s common knowledge that Zayn is known for having some of the most perfect hair ever (rivaling only Justin Bieber himself in my opinion) BUT NOW IT’S BLONDE-ISH AND MESSY AND SOMEHOW EVEN MORE PERFECT. LOOK.

Screen Shot 2015-11-17 at 3.10.33 PM

THOSE EYES. And I don’t know about you but I’m really thirsty for some juice all of a sudden.

Here’s a couple more gorgeous masterful images from the shoot:

Screen Shot 2015-11-17 at 3.10.53 PM

Yes, Zayn. Yes to all of those tattoos, that bike, that beard, that smolder in your eyes. YAAASS.

Screen Shot 2015-11-17 at 3.11.15 PM

(Sidebar: That part where his hair connects to his beard tho…) (Sidebar: Those cheekbones…)

In the interview portion of the feature, Zayn discusses his reason for leaving the group:

“By the time I decided to go, it just felt right on that day. I woke up on that morning, if I’m being completely honest with you, and was like, ‘I need to go home. I just need to be me now, because I’ve had enough.’”

He also goes on to discuss his plans for the future, and wanting to reach his fans in a more genuine way:

“A big part of why I left the band is I made the realization that it wasn’t actually about [being the biggest] anymore,” he says, unconcerned. “It wasn’t about the amount of ticket sales that I get. It was more about the people that I reach. I want to reach them in the right way, and I want them to believe what I’m saying.

New Invention Turns Your Phone Into a Vibrator!

Good news! IZIVIBE announced today that the company has created a phone case and mobile app that doubles as a personal vibrator.

Via Mashable:

IZIVIBE product manager Remy Waddle tells Mashable that the inspiration behind the phone case was “to imagine an original product, not vulgar, [that is] simple and effective.”

The IZIVIBE case features a long 100% medical-grade silicone handle, which acts as a vibrator when activated by your phone’s vibrations. These vibrations can be controlled by the IZIVIBE app, which features seven different intensities for hands-free play. Or, if you’d rather, you can use the phone case as a dildo — with or without vibrations.

The app also allows other people to control your IZIVIBE remotely, a feature created for long distance couples to stay connected.

In addition to its smooth exterior, the phone case is hypoallergenic and phthalate-free to ensure it’s safer for your body.

The IZIVIBE website was launched last week, but the product is not yet available for purchase. A representative for the company said IZIVIBE hopes to launch in June 2016, but neither the exact date nor price could be confirmed.

But… wouldn’t the lube get all in your phone?

Tina Fey: “We Should’ve Made Another Movie About Damian”

Tina Fey talked to The Advocate about Mean Girls (among other things), saying if she had it her away, there’d have been a spinoff  that would have focused exclusively on the film’s memorable gay character, Damian (played to perfection by wowlebrity Daniel Franzese).

The Advocate: What did gay men quote at brunch before Mean Girls?
Tina Fey: I don’t know, but I hope that’s still going on. I have a really weird marketing point in my deal that I don’t get any money when it shows on TBS, but I do get money when it’s quoted at brunch.

Did you anticipate that it would become such a gay classic?
I didn’t, but Damian, the gay character, was in every draft. Someone once asked me, “How come everyone’s sort of paired off at the end but we don’t see what happens to Damian?” I said, “Because it’s a movie about girls.” We should’ve made another movie about Damian.

LETS MAKE THIS HAPPEN, TINA!

TONIGHT! See “BRAND: A Second Coming” at Laemmle Music Hall!

By all accounts Ondi Timoner had a maddening time making this film about comedian slash political provocateur Russell Brand. To be sure he is not mad – he is dazzlingly brilliant – but maddening, and in that respect a perfect pairing for what’s happening right now. From Jihad to Trump, there’s a feeling of things coming unhinged that Brand – love him and loathe him – perfectly encapsulates. That he is a manic drug / sex addict / fame whore far from making him a freak, marks him a man for our time and the brand ambassador – if you will – for what Capitalist Celebrity Consumer Man hath wrought. Hats off to Katy Perry for marrying him and to Ondi Timoner for making this film about him. And a brickbat to Brand for distancing himself from this empathetic portrayal. Although the film may be more than he deserves, now is not the time to be silenced by shame. He needs to keep telling it like it is because right here, right now, he could not be more on message, as this loco doco reveals.

November 19: It’s YOUR Birthday, Bitch!

#BornThisDay: Gay Rights Activist, Morris Kight

kight

November 19, 1919Morris Kight:

“Let’s practice an exercise in love. Touch. Feel. Talk to somebody. Kiss somebody. Caress somebody. Enfold somebody into your love. Pass the enormous amount of electric energy that you have in you to someone else. Pass it. Pass it. Share it. Don’t give it away to strangers. Give it to your own people. Give it to gay people. That energy should be passing through us, all of us collectively. All over this land we’re moving, we’re marching, we’re changing. Brothers & sisters, I bring you nothing in the world but total, mad love.”

45 years ago, Christopher Street West, which oversees the LA Gay Pride Parade, was co-founded by gay rights pioneer Morris Kight, who also started up the Gay Liberation Front in LA in 1969, & the LA Gay & Lesbian Center in 1971, when it was known as the Gay Community Services Center, before the L or B or T or Q even existed.

Born in in Comanche County, Texas, Kight knew almost from the beginning what it was like to be the victim of hatred. His father found some sort of understanding of his gayness, but his mother was bitter & contrary until she died. After her death, Kight found letters she had written expressing her hatred toward homosexuals. Kight:

“She’d have been so much happier, if she had loved me.”

When he was 21 years old, Kight moved to New Mexico. Along with a group of other gay people, he worked on Adlai Stevenson’s 1952 Presidential campaign. He became afire with a passion for political activism, championing civil rights, & labor rights.

When Kight arrived in LA in 1958 he was almost 40 years old. He had been working for social justice causes since the early 1940s, but suddenly he found himself dealing with the brutality of the LA Police Department’s treatment of gay people in an era where the police regularly raided gay bars & violently harassed faggots & drag queens.

Kight named Eleanor Roosevelt as an influence on his values & his activism. That activism was moved to take action against Dow Chemical, protesting weapons manufacturing during the Vietnam War.

Kight gave his focus to working for Equal Rights for gay people, but he remained a dedicated civil rights proponent with deep ties to the Peace & Non-violence movements. Kight followed a Gandhian position of Pacifism. He took a personal oath of poverty, living on very little money. Kight truly wished for:

“All people to live an open & free life without fear of persecution.”

Kight was a relentless organizer & protester. He was one of the founders of the radical Gay Liberation Front (GLF) in 1969. By 1971, there were over 350 GLF chapters in the USA. He won all sorts of battles, but his greatest achievement was probably the founding of the Gay Community Services Center in 1971, an era when gay people still needed to be extremely cautious about living a life outside of the closet.

The Center was initially housed in 2, eventually 3, ramshackle Queen Ann style buildings on Wilshire Boulevard. Right after the opening, Kight was standing on the front porch of the main building admiring his homemade sign: Gay Community Services Center. One volunteer said: “Morris, you are going to get us all killed with that sign.” Kight countered:“Well, dear, then don’t stand under the sign.”

Kight lived a simple life. He claimed to be the first person in LA to hold a yard sale & his eccentric twice-yearly sales became not just his sole income but also help fund his causes:

“I sold brass, silver, china, silverware; I was great at weavings. I accumulated many dealers, & customers like Liberace. I’d keep track of what they liked & when I got something I would call them up. & enough money came in from that to pay the lights, rent & gas & car travel. I didn’t earn enough out of it to pay income taxes, so that was never an issue.”

Kight helped create some of the Gay Rights Movement’s most visible efforts, including: The LA Gay Pride March, The 1987 Second National March on Washington For Lesbian & Gay Rights, & The Morris Kight Collection, an archive with thousands of artifacts chronicling the beginning of gay, lesbian, bisexual & transgender civil rights, & art by gay men & lesbians, plus memorabilia including posters & photographs documenting the struggle for equal rights. The collection is now housed at USC. He also formed the Stonewall Democratic Club of California.

Kight:

“I’m sure we are going to get our freedom. I see it everywhere: In the marketplace, in the stores, in the homes, in dealing with families, in the kind of attention we get from radio, television & the newspapers. Still, I realize we’re not home yet. We have a long way to go. There are 1,750 arrests in LA each month. I weep for each of them. Everyone who’s denied a job, I weep for. Everyone who is driven from their homes by a misunderstanding family, I have to offer my love to.”

One of Kight’s most celebrated protests was against Barney’s Beanery, a restaurant in West Hollywood. The place had a sign above bar that said: “Fagots Stay Out”, with the saying printed on their matchbook covers also. Kight & The Reverend Troy Perry organized over 100 activists outside, sending the protesters in to the eatery to occasionally order coffee & take up tables. The protest was initially successful with the owner eventually handing over the sign to Kight in front of news cameras. But, the owner replaced the sign, where it remained until West Hollywood’s first gay mayor, Valerie Terrigno, demanded that it be removed when the city council passed an anti-discrimination ordinance. In 2005, a new owner apologized to the community & began hosting a monthly lunch for gay street kids. Kight:

“That sign was a great catalyst for the gay movement. In spring of 1970 we did a change-in, making a nuisance by continually asking for change, a sit-it where we sat in the restaurant for hours without ordering anything more than a cup of coffee, boycott & picket. It took all that to persuade the owner to surrender us the sign & to never discriminate again in employment or service.”

Morris did get that sign & it is now featured in the Morris Kight Collection. Today WeHo has an ordinance prohibited such signs.

One of the most effective Gay Rights leaders in history, Kight spent his final days at Carl Bean House Of Los Angeles, a guest of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, one of the many agencies he nurtured & supported.

“People today forget that in those days, you were risking your well-being. You were risking harassment, you were risking arrest, you were risking getting beaten up by hate-mongers. & the law enforcement community didn’t think twice about hassling gays.”

Kight made his exit from this world in 2003 at 83 years old, leaving the planet a better place. He left behind what we used to call a “life partner” of 25 years, Roy Zucheran. Wouldn’t Kight be astounded with what has been accomplished for his cause in the past 10 years?

As you may have seen last Friday and over the weekend, The Wow Report had a contest offering two tickets to Adele‘s Radio City show on Tuesday night. Fans who posted a pic with the hashtag #AdeleLGBTfan were automatically entered and Daniel Thomas, an interior designer in NYC, won! He took his boyfriend digital marketer, Matthew Ballew. They were in good company with Bradley Cooper and girlfriend Irina Shayk, Jennifer Lawrence, Peter Facinelli, and even GOP candidate Donald Trump and his wife Melania. Here’s Daniel pics from his fun night out in NYC and what he had to say about the exciting experience;

“I will remember the night for the rest of my life. Her opening of ‘Hello’ gave me chills. She was so genuinely sweet and friendly on stage… talking to us all like we were one of her friends making it seem so intimate and real even with 6000 people. Hearing how happy she was to be performing again made me so incredibly happy that she is back! Everyone there were super fans of Adele like myself and my boyfriend. She said our energy took her nerves away.

She kicked off her shoes and played daydreamer on her guitar which she never does anymore, she said because she loves her acrylic nails too much. Seeing her perform with her guitar was incredible. You could tell how excited/nervous she was to perform but at the end she said this was the first time she remembered every moment of her performance. We got to hear her perform Skyfall which she had only done 2 times before! We also go to hear 4 songs off her new album which made it extra special.

Adele said she can’t wait to be back on tour and I can’t either!!! The overall concert experience was beautiful and I loved every second of it! Thank you so much Wow Report for picking me for this amazing experience!”

You are SO welcome, Daniel. I think we managed to get the tickets to the right guy. Daniel’s videos of Adele were shared on YouTube and have already gotten a LOT of views. Take a look. Btw, Adele is the musical guest on SNL this week.

Paige Powell was the associate publisher of Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine. She came to New York City from Oregon in 1980 armed with her camera and joined Warhol’s inner circle. She photographed the scene over the next decade, like her boyfriend, Jean-Michel Basquiat (captured in a series of nudes) designer Stephen Sprouse, Madonna, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf among others.

All these images were stashed in boxes under Powell’s bed for decades, but they’ve been taken out for a new exhibit at the Portland Art Museum. Paige Powell: The Ride.

The Ride, is the first part of the multimedia installation which, includes video with never-before-seen recordings of Powell’s pals, including new footage of Warhol and Haring. Photographer/director David LaChapelle also mixed a soundtrack for the second part of the installation called Beulah Land, an interactive exhibit featuring over 800 images recreating a 1984 exhibition of Powell’s photographs in NYC.

The Museum is hosting several other programs and events in conjunction with the exhibit, including a conversation between Powell and co-curator Brian Ferriso today, November 19. The exhibit is up through February 21, 2016 and you can find out more here.

#Islamophobia: After the Paris Attacks, A Gay Muslim Gets a Hateful Message on Grindr

Screen Shot 2015-11-19 at 1.22.46 PM

In the wake of the Paris attacks, Islamophobia is growing, even on Grindr. One young gay Muslim received an incredibly hateful message on Grindr that has been gotten some coverage on social media. Anthony Magallanaz, a 22-year-old from Phoenix, Arizona, had some Arabic lyrics on his Grindr profile, حبيتك بالشتي (habbaitak besh-sheti), which means ‘I loved you in the winter’. It comes from the song Al Thaniah by Fairouz, a Lebanese singer. But not everybody got it. Anthony told Gay Star News.

“At first I thought it as a joke, but one in bad taste, so I asked for clarification and it became clear to me that he only wanted to be hateful, so that’s when I stopped taking him seriously. At the same time, I tried to be light-hearted with him and show that, ‘Yeah, I’m Muslim, but am I the one being aggressive here?’”

He didn’t report it to Grindr, because he just wanted the “conversation to be over”.

“I’m scared for the Muslims in Europe as well as those here in the United States and most of all those in the Middle East, who are the most direct and immediate victims of groups like Da’esh and al-Qa’eda. There have already been attacks in Baghdad and Beirut and I fear there will be strong action on Da’esh’s part and equally strong reaction against innocent people on the part of bigots here in the US and Europe.”

I hear your fears and share some myself. This interaction goes to show that there are assholes all over. Anthony, better blocked than in your bed, for sure.

#OnStage: Angela DiCarlo’s “The Mad World of Miss Hathaway” Spoofs “Mad Men”

2013-Miss-Hathaway

As I wrote about here, I was on Sandra Bernhard‘s SiriusXM radio show Sandyland recently, (along with pals like Lady Bunny & Robin Byrd) and I’ve been tuning in to the hilarity. I listened to an episode the other day with Angela DiCarlo as a guest and she was hilarious and entertaining, and come to find out we have tons of friends in common like OUT‘s Greg Garry, David Ilku, (who is in this show) and more. Well, Angie’s doing a new show that’s a spoof of TV’s Mad Men; The Mad World of Miss Hathaway! (Yes her name on the show was “Joan Holloway” but I’m sure DiCarlo didn’t want a lawsuit.) From their description…

“As a new decade begins, JoAnne Hathaway is at the top of her game in the advertising world, but when the future of the company becomes uncertain due to Drone Raper’s lost weekend, JoAnne Hathaway finds herself struggling to keep everything she slept her way to the top to get and finding out what it means to be a single working mother of the 1970’s. A hilarious holiday musical roller-coaster ride of a show not to missed!”

The music, lyrics and book are all written by Angela Di Carlo, who stars as JoAnne Hathaway. The all-star supporting cast includes Mike Albo & David Ilku (of Untitard), Jill Pangallo, Clayton Dean Smith, Robert Reynolds (remember him from The Van Gogh Show?) with Kyle Forester on piano.

Here’s what people are saying about the show:

“Angela Di Carlo’s slap-happy horndog musical parody of Mad Men, The Mad World of Miss Hathaway” –New York Magazine

“30 Rock, The Simpsons, SNL…all have tried spoofing the quintessentially spoof-able show, but few of these efforts are as funny—or risque as ‘The Mad World of Miss Hathaway.’” –Capital New York

The greatest singer that ever lived? Maybe. The greatest French singer, ever? Almost certainly. Even without the worldwide attention in the last week on Paris (and all things we love that are french) Edith Piaf‘s 100th birthday is a pretty big deal.

So, Daniel Nardicio and Andy Brattain are throwing a New York party for legend, Edith Piaf on Saturday, December 19th with some MAJOR talent. Backed by the American Pops Orchestra and conducted by Luke Frazier, is a one of a kind celebration bringing in one room the diverse styles of 8 incredible women; Elaine Paige, Christine Ebersole, Marilyn Maye, Vivian Reed, Little Annie, Gay Marshall, Molly Pope, and cabaret sensation Meow Meow at Town Hall in NYC.

Elaine Paige played the title role in Evita and originated several other roles in shows on London’s West End including Hair, Grease, Cats, Chess, Sunset Boulevard, Sweeney Todd, The Drowsy Chaperone and Follies (just to name a few). You can watch her as Piaf, below.

Broadway’s own sweetheart, two-time Tony winner (42nd Street & Grey Gardens), Christine Ebersole, shares the bill. And, Marilyn Maye, the woman Ella Fitzgerald anointed:

“the greatest white female singer in the world.”

and who also holds the title for most appearances for a singer (76!) on The Tonight Show. Joining the star-studded line-up are the cabaret star Meow Meow, Little Annie (most notably from the punk band Coil), Tony nominee (Bubbling Brown Sugar) and vocal powerhouse, the electric Vivian Reed, nationally known Piaf interpreter Gay Marshall, and local downtown ingénue Molly Pope. Tickets are available here and there are VIP packages available with an intimate meet-and-greet with the performers after the show. (To inquire about loge seat packages, email Daniel@dworld.us. I’ll see you there!)
