November 14: It’s YOUR Birthday, Bitch!

brooks 3

November 14, 1906Louise Brooks

One of my favorite figures in film history, Louise Brooks was a Midwestern girl who became a noted lead dancer with the famed Denishawn Modern Dance Company in LA (whose members included a young Martha Graham), a model, a showgirl, a Ziegfield Follies star, a film actor, & one of the most famous people on the planet. She was especially noted for popularizing the bobbed hairstyle.

In the 1920s, Brooks moved to Europe where she became an enormous star of feature films including G. W. Pabst’s Pandora’s Box (1929), Diary Of A Lost Girl (1929), & Prix De Beaute (1930). She starred in 17 silent films, 5 talkies & achieved a cult status that has continued into the 21st century, holding film fans in awe.

Brooks was known to be resolutely independent & unafraid to use strong, salty language. She was disliked by Hollywood’s elite & studio brass for not being the submissive woman expected of a lady of her era.

Living in NYC, Brooks was beckoned back to Hollywood to record sound retakes for her work in The Canary Murder Case (1929). She flatly refused. Hollywood blacklisted her for that defiance. In a final act of independence, she decidedly ended her own acting career in 1938 after shooting a John Wayne Western, in which she wore uncharacteristically long hair.

By 1946, Brooks was working as a shop girl at Saks Fifth Avenue earning $40 a week. She was also working as an escort to make ends meet. But French film fans rediscovered Brooks in the 1950s & revived her fame.

George Eastman House film curator, James Card, was in on the revival of interest. He invited Brooks, who was living alone & broke in a tiny Manhattan top floor walk-up apartment, to live in Rochester, NY, where she flourished. Brooks went on to become an accomplished painter, author, & film archivist.

She published several novels, plus a memoir Lulu In Hollywood (1972). The memoir is written with great skill. It’s intelligent, fresh & funny. She is often the target of her own biting wit. Brooks was not only unimpressed with most of polite society; she was equally unimpressed with her status as film icon. Before Katharine Hepburn & Bette Davis, Brooks was a true Hollywood rebel. She was more than willing to kill her career rather than do anything she didn’t want to do. At one point, she was probably the biggest international film star, but she showed no remorse when recalling her memories of her fall from that status.

Late in life, Brooks began a whole new career as a serious film historian & noted critic. Her thoughtful essays appeared in magazines like Sight & Sound, Film Culture, & Focus On Film.

Brooks enjoyed playing with the speculation about her sexuality, cultivating friendships with famous lesbians. She admitted to having assignations with women, including a brief affair with Greta Garbo.  She later described Garbo as a masculine but a “charming & tender lover”.  Yet, she considered herself neither a lesbian nor bisexual.

Brooks:

“All my life it has been fun for me. When I am dead, I believe that film writers will fasten on the story that I am a lesbian. I have done lots to make it believable. All my women friends have been lesbians. But that is one point upon which I agree positively with : There is no such thing as bisexuality. Ordinary people, although they may accommodate themselves for reason of whoring or marriage, are one-sexed. Out of curiosity, I had affairs with girls…they did nothing for me.”

Brooks’ final credits rolled in the summer of 1985, but her influence is still felt in popular culture today. In a wonderful twist of fate, she lived long enough to see her life celebrated with film festivals dedicated to her work. Most of her films survive due to her own efforts. My favorite example of her reach is Jonathan Demme’s wicked comedic film Something Wild (1986), with Melanie Griffith playing a wild, reckless femme fatale who calls herself Lulu & adopts a certain bobbed hairdo. Liza Minnelli has stated that she studied Brooks’ films in preparation to play Sally Bowles in the film version of Cabaret (1972). I named a little rescued Jack Russell terrier for her iconic character.

On Natalie Merchant‘s self-titled album from last year, the song Lulu is a biographical portrait of Brooks. Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark’s Pandora’s Box (1991) is a tribute to Brooks, as is Rufus Wainwright’s All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu (2010). Wainwright:

“My spirit animal is Louise Brooks from Pandora’s Box. That character she plays in the film, Lulu. That’s why I wrote Songs For Lulu, she needed to be appeased.”

Brooks was an intuitive, intelligent, impulsive artist born decades before her time. She was hedonistic & unapologetic. Asked about her style of acting, Brooks wrote: “I had a complete indifference to the camera” but the camera was infatuated with Brooks:

“The tragedy of film history is that it is fabricated, falsified by the very people who make film history.”

This illustration by Jean Jullien has gone viral since the attacks in Paris last night

In the wake of the horrific attacks in the city last night, U2 has canceled its concert in Paris, which was to air as an HBO special TONIGHT. The special, which was to include a full concert, was slated to be filmed live on Saturday to air on HBO later that day at 9 PM EST. A documentary chronicling the band’s Innocence + Experience tour aired a week prior on HBO. (The network will air Jersey Boys instead. Paris Is Burning might have been a more apt replacement…) A statement on the band’s website reads;

“As a result of the ongoing state of emergency across France, the U2 Paris concert scheduled for 14th November will not be going ahead as planned. U2 and Live Nation, along with HBO who were due to live broadcast the Saturday concert, are fully resolved to go ahead with this show at an appropriate time.”

CNN has reported that 127 people are dead after coordinated terror attacks across Paris, most of those occurred at the city’s Bataclan music venue, where Eagles of Death Metal were performing. Additionally, an explosion took place outside the Stade de France, where the French soccer team was playing Germany, claiming four lives. Fourteen are reported dead as a result of a shooting in a restaurant, Le Petit Cambodge, another 19 dead outside the La Belle Equipe bar, while four others were killed on Avenue de la Republique.

U2 conducted a live Facebook chat earlier Friday from Paris, so they were in town during the attacks.

“We watched in disbelief and shock at the unfolding events in Paris and our hearts go out to all the victims and their families across the city tonight. We are devastated at the loss of life at the Eagles of Death Metal concert and our thoughts and prayers are with the band and their fans. And we hope and pray that all of our fans in Paris are safe.”

The band’s tour, which kicked off May 14, was initially slated to conclude on Nov. 28 in Dublin. No word on how that will now change. (via EW)

made_in_france_poster_-_p_2015

The Wednesday theatrical release of Made in France, from director Nicholas Boukhrief, has been canceled following the Friday night attacks in Paris. It is about a French Muslim journalist, who infiltrates a Jihadi cell in Paris to find out about a terror plot in the French capital. The movie was scheduled to open in on about 100 screens. The filmmakers said;

“Following the tragic events of last night, the distributor Pretty Pictures and producer Radar Films have immediately decided to postpone the release of the film to a later date.”

Paris transport authority, RATP, was removing the film’s provacative posters, which show the Eiffel Tower as an assault rifle, for the film from metro stations early this morning.

The movie was originally set for release early in the year. Distributor SND Films dropped the project after the Charlie Hebdo attack.

Also, the French premiere and press events for Natalie Portman’s Jane Got a Gun were cancelled today. Portman has previously expressed caution about living in Paris following the Charlie Hebdo terror attacks in January. Portman has said she was nervous about being Jewish living in Paris. She moved to the city earlier this year as her husband Benjamin Millepied took over the top position at the Paris Opera Ballet. (via Hollywood Reporter)

#LGBT: Mass Mormon Resignation Planned After Church Leaders Change Policies Regarding Gays

A group of Mormons are planning a “mass resignation” after leaders changed church policies regarding gay people. These rules appear in an internal church handbook. The changes, that were were not meant to be made public, say that children living with a gay parent cannot be baptised until they are 18 and only when they renounce homosexuality and also that members can be expelled from the church if they enter into a gay marriage. Both liberal and conservatives Mormon groups have criticised the the changes. Mormon scholar Patrick Mason told Reuters;

“The surprising impact has been the amount of people who are confused and troubled and disturbed and, frankly, repulsed… And these aren’t just progressives and LGBT advocates. … They are saying: ‘This doesn’t feel right. This doesn’t square with me.'”

It’s a departure for the Mormon church, which has softened its approach on gay issues recently and backed a Utah state law that provides legal protections for gay people. Church officials have not commented on the changes.

More than 1,000 people plan to attend the “mass resignation” rally today at a park across the from the church’s headquarters in Salt Lake City, but it’s not clear how many of those people have already left the church. Church member Sarah Epperson plans to resign at the rally on Saturday. She told the New York Times;

“Any church that wants to claim itself as a Christian organization that uses Jesus Christ the savoir to somehow exclude any group of people is not anything that I want to be a part of.”

#BornThisDay: Filmmaker, François Ozon

Francois-Ozon

November 15, 1967–  François Ozon is the Paris born filmmaker who has achieved the unlikely title of leader of a movement known as the New French Extremism Queer Cinema.

He brings an acerbic wit & sly sexuality to his eclectic films, most of which have gay themes, gay characters, but always a gay sensibility.

My favorite is his dark murder mystery musical 8 Femmes (2002) with a smart collection of France’s most fascinating leading ladies: Danielle Darrieux, Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Emmanuelle Béart, Fanny Ardant, Virginie Ledoyen, & Ludivine Sagnier.

Set in a colorful 1950s Gaelic world, this very original film feels as if the films of George Cukor, Rainer Fassbinder & Alfred Hitchcock were put in a cinematic blender & poured into a great big bowl of Douglas Sirk.

In 5×2 (2004) the life a happy gay couple is used to contrast the unhappiness of an attractive straight couple in a relationship that is falling apart using 5 key scenes from their relationship told in reverse order & punctuated by 5 different Italian love songs.

In the gorgeous, lush, erotic, Hitchcockian Swimming Pool (2003), Charlotte Rampling, in one of her best performances, plays a character who becomes a younger woman’s reluctant caregiver & voyeur.

Many of Ozon’s films are under 90 minutes long with a tight focus. Time To Leave (2005) is about a young gay photographer with terminal cancer who pushes everyone away, including his family & boyfriend. It features a great performance by the legendary Jeanne Moreau as his grandmother, the only person who can reach him.

In the screwball farce Potiche (2010), Deneuve plays a submissive wife who gets to run her reactionary husband’s umbrella factory after he suffers a heart attack from the stress of his workers’ strike for higher wages. She turns out to be a natural leader whose management style inspires both her workers & a liberal politician played by Gérard Depardieu. It’s a wacky 1970s set comedy with an affectionate comment on the indomitable spirit of France itself.

Ozon’s timely latest film, Une Nouvelle Amie (2014), released in the USA as The New Girlfriend, is the story of a man who recently lost his wife & now embraces his female personality just as his late wife’s best friend begins to dress as a man.

Orzon gives Fassbinder as one of his biggest influences:

“Fassbinder makes very different movies. He does not always try to create a masterpiece but to create a body of work & he works with the same actors. It’s these things that made me think that I could make a film. When you see this kind of smaller film it is an inspiration.”

Like Fassbinder, he chooses to use the same actors over & over. But Ozon also finds inspiration in the Hollywood melodramas of Douglas Sirk:

“I actually came to Sirk through Fassbinder. Both Fassbinder & Godard wrote about him at a time when he was considered very old fashioned. People thought that Sirk made silly American melodramas. But I saw them as something more than guilty pleasures.”

Ozon’s works frequently explore gay themes, & he almost always includes characters who are bisexuals, transsexuals or about to decide. They always feature strong, well-drawn female characters.

“I do feel more comfortable writing a character for a woman. When I write a character for a man I have this feeling of being in front of myself or looking in a mirror. There is a lot of pleasure in working with women. Very often they are more pleasurable & easier to work with than men.”

Ozon has been courted by Hollywood but continues to decline the offers”

“In America, film is not about art or culture. It’s a business. So they make movies for teenagers, because it’s easier. & they have a different way of working. The producer does not direct the film, but they do make all of the decisions. The director is a technician more than an artist. I don’t want to work that way. I don’t feel the necessity of losing my soul.”

Ozon is very handsome & quite prolific, writing & directing 35 films in 25 years. He is very coy about his private life in the press, dig as I might. He might even possibly be single. I wanted to celebrate him today on his birthday after considering the horrible events of Friday night.. His films take on the issue of identity & today I appreciate his very French-ness & his bold take on the art of film, something the French more or less invented & do so well.

#PeaceforParis: Jean Jullien’s Now Iconic Eiffel Tower Drawing Was an Impulse

In the hours following Friday’s terrorist attacks in Paris, french artist Jean Jullien posted on his Facebook and Twitter account a quickly sketched drawing of a peace symbol merged with an line drawing of the Eiffel Tower as the center with the simple caption…

“Peace for Paris”

The image took off immediately shared by more than 23K Facebook and 45K Twitter users. It is also still dominating Instagram. Jullien told The Telegraph.

“Usually when I draw I make an image that will make people laugh, or communicate. But this time I felt like communicating something that made me and everybody very upset. It was just my way of sharing my reaction, of sharing a need for peace and solidarity in the face of such a disaster.”

Jullien’s image has garnered tons of attention but it was done without thought of his own fame,

“It wasn’t a piece to promote myself, sell anything or get anything. It was meant to be used freely, to encourage peace in Paris and peace in general.”

Jullien told The Telegraph he didn’t really care that his drawing was initially being attributed to the street artis Banksy. A Banksy fan account tweeted the image with the same caption as Jullien, thousands retweeted the photo and assumed the drawing was created by Banksy.

“I didn’t care. It’s not the time to claim ownership, or a price on something. It’s not a time for concerns like that.

I wish I could say it feels great, but given the circumstances I can’t. I feel completely shocked, angry, and sad.”

#PeaceforParis: SNL’s Cecily Strong Sends a Simple & Moving Message To Paris From New York

SNL skipped the usually political cold open to its show last night, and instead Cecily Strong paid simple tribute to the horrific terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday.

“Paris is the City of Light, and here in New York City, we know that light will never go out. Our love and support is with everyone there tonight; we stand with you.”

The actress then recited the exact statement in very good French (as far as my ear could tell) before saying,

“Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night.”

The long-time home of (Republican & gun advocate) Charlton Heston just hit the market. The house in Coldwater Canyon was designed for Heston in 1959 by architect William S. Beckett. It has been “the private residence of the Heston family” since its completion although Charelton died in 2008.

The house in these photos is a neat little time capsule of L.A. and Hollywood modernism. It has 5 bedrooms and six and a half bathrooms, a private office, a Bond-style library, and (my favorite) a three-story artist’s studio with an elevator, screening room, and its own bed and bathroom. It sits on three acres with a private, gated driveway with parking for 10 cars and features a swimming pool and tennis court. Asking price is just over $12 million.

Madonna delivered an emotional speech last night on her Rebel Heart Tour in Stockholm, Sweden, less than 24 hours after the terror attacks in Paris.

Speaking from the stage, the singer spoke through the tears saying she felt “torn”.

“Why am I up here dancing and having fun when people are crying over the loss of their loved ones?

They want to silence us, but there is strength in unity.

This whole show is about celebrating life. And standing up for your rights. Fighting for what you believe in.

We must start to treat each other with dignity and respect. This is the only thing that will change the world.”

She spoke for several minutes before performing Like A Prayer. She later took to Instagram to thank the audience for helping her through a “difficult” show, saying,

“There was so much love in this room it made me feel like we were tuning darkness into light.”

#ControversyOTD: People Are Upset About Another Holiday Sweater – This Time It Says “Hanukkah J.A.P.”

Sweater

After Target got everyone riled up with their “OCD: Obsessive Christmas Disorder” sweater last week, another holiday-related sh*tstorm is brewing. Now it’s a Hanukkah sweater by the label Faux Real that reads

“Chai Maintenance… Hannukah J.A.P”

The initials stand for “Jewish American Princess”. Customers on Nordstrom‘s Facebook page were NOT pleased, with one post calling it “degrading.” They have stopped selling the sweater as a result of the feedback. A spokesperson for the department store said,

“We made a mistake by not looking more closely at the words on the sweater before we posted it — had we done so, we wouldn’t have offered it. As soon as we heard from customers, we removed it from our site right away. We’re terribly sorry for offending people and sincerely apologize.”

The O.C.D. sweater was dismissed by many with the disease but I can see why some might think this one is different. What do you think? A silly holiday sweater or a degrading message in yarn? Sound off on our Facebook page.

RuPaul’s Drag Race season seven seven standout Kennedy Davenport needs your help. She has 45 days to make a balloon payment of $33,000 on the mortgage for her her family’s home or she will lose it. She writes:

If there is one thing I have learned during my career, whether it was my first few years learning the ropes or in my newly found fame, it is that I truly have the most amazing and sincere fans! So, it is today that I make a very humbling plea to all of you. I will attempt to make a long story short. As many of you know, my father passed away, and as this was an unexpected event, he unfortunately did not have a Will prepared. I spent a year cooperating with the process of probate on our childhood home left behind, all the while making monthly mortgage payments. The bind that I am now currently facing, is that the mortgage company has decided I can no longer continue on a payment plan system; instead, I must make a final “balloon” payment of $33,000 or I will lose the house my sisters, nieces, and myself depend upon calling our home. Now I have never been one to ask for a handout, and I always do whatever it takes to ensure that my family is taken care of, but I am at the end of a rope as I only have the next 45 days to come up with the money. This not only effects me, but 5 other members of my family. So to my thousands of fans out there in cyber-world, if you can spare even a few dollars to assist me during this setback I would be grateful beyond measure! You all are my lifeline, and remember God is good, all the time…all the time, God is good.

She has so far already received over$3,00o in the first few hours, which is amazing, but anything you can do to help will be appreciated.

SNL started out with a moving and simple message, delivered by cast-member Cecily Strong, from New York to Paris. After that it was back to the funny with host Elizabeth Banks. The musical guest Disclosure, which is Guy and Howard Lawrence, took their showcase opportunity to perform alongside two artists that appear on the duo’s new LP: Sam Smith and Lorde. The duo let go with Magnets, with Lorde singing her Caracal feature live for the first time. (The stage and SNL’s logo featured the “blue, white and red” of the French flag.) Sam Smith did an elctrifying performance of Omen, the follow-up collaboration to their joint star-making single Latch. Oh-Men. I think this is my new fave song. (Sam Smith is the new George Michael!) The fact that the legendary performer Patti LaBelle can throw down in the kitchen is common knowledge at this point, but in case you didn’t know, Ms. Patti has also recently become The Sweet Potato Pie Empress. A guy named James Wright posted this incredible reaction video after trying the delicious sweet potato pie (now being called “The Tickle-Me-Elmo of Thanksgiving) which in large part put the #PattiPie up into Internet legend territory. Speaking of Patti, y’all remember this iconic moment on The RuPaul Show tho?
