#RIP: Gunner Hansen, the Actor Who Played Leatherface, Dies

Gunner Hansen, the 300-pound Icelandic-American poetry journal editor/carpenter who famously played the psychotic, chainsaw-wielding Leatherface in Tobe Hooper’s 1974 seminal  horror masterpiece The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, died Saturday at the age of 68 of pancreatic cancer at his home in Northeast Harbor, Maine. Hansen was studying English and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Texas when he met Hooper and accepted the role of Leatherface, severely mentally handicapped man who wears a mask of his victims’ faces sewn together in a grotesque quilt. Says Vulture:

When a coterie of young hippie types wander into Leatherface’s house, he greets them by bashing in their brains with a mallet, dangling them from meat hooks, and carving them up with the titular woodland instrument. Hooper’s film, anchored by Hansen’s performance, approaches its horrors with such fierce banality it feels surreal. What Hansen does feels less like acting than going insane on screen; Wes Craven said it looked like “someone stole the camera and started killing people.”

The movie shot for 16 hours a day in sweltering Texas heat for three weeks with only one day off a week. The actors all wore the same outfits every day so by the final week of filming no one would sit next to Hansen, he smelled so rank. Right before filming the scene when he chases Sally (Marilyn Burns) up the stairs and cuts down a door to get to her, using an actual functioning chainsaw, Hansen scarfed down a few brownies someone had passed out earlier, not realizing they were special brownies. They kicked in as he was filming, and he was so high when he had to break down the door, he had a tough time concentrating. “I trust Gunnar 100 percent,” Burns said later. “But not Gunnar on brownies, with a chainsaw, running up the steps, take forty-four, oh no.”

Hooper’slow-budget movie cost a mere$100,000 (in cash) and ended up becoming the most successful independent film of all time, taking in over $30 million in box office revenue (John Carpenter’s considerably tamer Halloween usurped it in 1978).

According to CNN: after the movie’s release, Hansen began a career as a writer and editor, although he eventually returned to acting — mostly in low-budget horror movies with titles like “Chainsaw Sally” and “Swarm of the Snakehead.”

At the time of his death he was developing Death House, a horror film he had written about a prison break at a secret underground government facility. The movie will be produced next year in Hansen’s memory.

#MerryChristmas: Kylie Minogue and James Cordon Cover Yaz Classic “Only You”

Yaz‘s 1982 classic “Only You” – one of THE BEST SONGS of the ’80s – is given new life by the ever-iconic Kylie Minogue and cutie-patootie Late Late Show host James Corden. It’s the first single off Kylie’s album Kylie Christmas, due on November 13, and it’s giving us MAJOR FEELS. Seriously, I’m a puddle over here. SOBBING. Don’t quite understand why it being considered a Christmas song, but I’m not complaining. It’s easily more Christmas-y than “My Favorite Things” which keeps inexplicably getting dragged out on holiday stations – really, what’s THAT about? But I digress. Listen to it in the lyric video below.

Kate Moss shot her upcoming cameo in the Absolutely Fabulous movie in London last week. The Daily Mail reported that the model was spotted filming a scene in a sequined green Gaultier where she drinks champagne and smokes a cigarette while still in the river. (Note the man below is none other than designer Jean-Paul Gaultier himself…)

Created and written by Jennifer Saunders, AbFab debuted in ’92 and following the lives of PR guru Edina Monsoon and magazine editor Patsy Stone for 39 episodes. The show returned for a series of specials airing on Christmas Day 2011, New Year’s Day 2012 and July 23, 2012 to coincide with the London Olympics. Saunders said,

“I am thrilled and excited to finally start filming. We are all taking our medication and hoping for the best.”

The movie will be out next year, but no release date yet. Stay tuned…

LA Haunted Attraction Review: Fear Is What We Learned Here

$

Over the weekend I attended one of the scariest and aesthetically ingenious spooky attractions I’ve ever been to, appropriately titled “Fear is What We Learned Here.” Yes, Halloween is now behind us, but that just makes attending this attraction all the more strange and creepy-feeling. If you want to keep the scares going into November and beyond, and you like a horror maze that’s as much a beautifully unsettling dream-like experience as it is a “house of horrors,” I highly recommend this surreal and incredibly cool attraction. Similar to installations like “The ALONE Experience,” this is an event that each visitor experiences completely alone, in situations where one’s vision is severely compromised, and performers reach out from the darkness to touch, prod and direct the visitor’s movement. Making this attraction all the scarier, and frankly making me seriously question my own judgement in agreeing to do this, the event is held in a private home on a dark, quiet, suburban street. Once I’d made contact with the organizers and arranged for my visit, I was sent the address for the secret location, with strict and specific instructions to arrive precisely on time, and follow a certain foot path to arrive at the installation. When I arrived, I was greeted by a dark figure who gave me a release form to sign, and placed a ski mask with a mounted light over my head, and headphones over my ears; I was then instructed to take off my shoes and socks, and lie down on a mattress nearby. The less I give away about what followed, the better, in order to not spoil any of its surprises. But suffice to say, it was a scary, fascinating, and ultimately beautiful immersive art piece, which the organizers themselves refer to as “The Dream.” The installation, which takes about 45 minutes to go through, is filled with strange, sinister and evocative imagery, characters and experiences that transported me to another world, and left me feeling like I was still dreaming afterward. If you’re interested in attending “Fear Is What We Learned Here,” you can contact them at fear@whatwelearnedhere.com to learn more and schedule your visit. You can also find them on Instagram here.

Remember about a year ago I posted about about the Beekman Boy’s Mortgage Lifter pasta sauce? And that it was being sold at select Target stores? The sauce was such a HUGE success, that Target has asked the boys to do a whole line of Beekman 1802 Farm Pantry products! The products will include items from small farms like pie filling made from cherries from Oregon, soup that’s made of beans from a farm in Illinois, and granola from New York.

From ABC News:

The items — 48 in total and bearing the Beekman 1802 label — are part of a partnership between megaretailer Target and small-town farms led by Ridge, a farmer, and fellow Beekman 1802 cofounder and farmer Josh Kilmer-Purcell.

ConDRAGulations, Beekman Boys! We’ll definitely be supporting!

We’ve decided to make Friday, November 13 International Marc Jacobs Day on the WOW Report to celebrate the fashion icon, and will be posting reasons to love Marc in the days leading up to Friday. The FIRST reason you should love Marc Jacobs is…

Well, he’s the only man to make a “forever” statement at the Met Ball!

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs wore this spring/summer 2012 Commes des Garcons dress to the 2012 Met Gala. He said, “It’s just a lace dress. I just didn’t wanna wear a tuxedo and be boring.” Boring you were not, Mr. Jacobs, and we loved every second of it.

Britney’s “Baby One More Time” Lyrics Explained & It Has Nothing To Do With Domestic Violence

I remember where I was the first time I heard it. My mom used to make me pick up ALL of my little sister’s friends and take them to school when I turned 16 and got my drivers license. I used to tell her she should have painted the damn car yellow. I digress. My little sister’s best friend, named Brittney, popped this into the CD player one morning and it was love at first listen. But what the hell did she mean “Hit me baby one more time?”

The lyrics of Britney‘s “Baby One More Time” are explained in John Seabrook’s new pop music history book, The Song Machine: Inside the Hit Factory. Turns out the Swedish songwriting duo behind several of Britney’s early songs, Max Martin and Rami Yacoub, were just a little confused on American slang. You see, they thought “hit me” was like saying “hit me up” as in “hit me up on the telephone.” So Britney was just innocently asking a boy to give her a call. And all you perverts thought she was into “S&M”

Britney

Jive, Britney’s record label feared the song title “Hit Me Baby One More Time” would send the wrong message and advocate domestic violence, so they opted to drop the “Hit Me” and it became “Baby One More Time.”

ALSO: Many people don’t know that our documentary I Am Britney Jean isn’t WOW’s only connection to the pop queen. Nigel Dick, who directed the WOW show Pam: Girl on the Loose directed Britney’s videos “Baby One More Time,” “Sometimes,” “Drive Me Crazy,” and “Oops…I Did It Again!”

Lady Bunny Gives Michelle Visage’s New Book “The Diva Rules” Some Love

At the Strand Book Store in NYC, Lady Bun-Bun talks to Drag Race judge extraordinaire Michelle Visage about her new book, The Diva Rules: Ditch the Drama, Find Your Strength, and Sparkle Your Way to the TopWrites Bunny:

I interviewed Michelle Visage at the Strand bookstore in NYC last week for a packed kick-off tour. She has a new book called The Diva Rules which is part autobiography and part diva-in-training tips. As some of you know, I’m obsessed with the news and don’t watch much reality TV – even when I’m on it. Cuz I’m cuckoo like that. However, I cherish the times I’ve gotten to hang out with Michelle at gigs. I don’t know her as a bitchy judge as you may view her as–I see her as a warm-hearted friend who’s always game for some giggles and gossip and is not afraid to express strong opinions even if they ain’t popular. While traveling to gigs may seem glamorous, those shared moments with other performers I’ve befriended mean the world to me. (But enough about performers and back to Michelle!). Seriously, in between those moments on stage, there’s a lot of grueling travel, sound checks and sitting alone in hotel rooms. They can be nice hotels or sometimes they’re dumps. But being on the road in any hotel can be just plain lonely and Michelle’s the antidote for that. You know the feeling – when you’re in a glamorous destination but you’re really missing your pets back home. My pets are mice and roaches–so easy to care for! The roaches actually eat the mouse poop so it works out great for a gal on the go.

When asked to host her kick-off book tour, I hesitated. I don’t know all Drag Race trivia from every season. But it turned out I didn’t need to, because there is a natural chemistry between us as evidenced in this video. Dancer/choreographer Cesar Valentino was in attendance, and I was reminded that in her many incarnations one of her first was voguer. Yes, a white girl voguing back in the day with supernova Willie Ninja at events like Suzanne Bartsch’s Love Ball. Then on to pop stardom with her girl group Seduction, radio jock and now TV personality.

The audience seemed to really enjoy this presentation and I felt happy to be part of the Drag Race/Drag U/World Of Wonder family. I may be the demented, slutty aunt of the WOW family who says inappropriate things, but I actually tried to keep it clean here for Miss Visage’s younger fans. Despite this camera angle highlighting my 3rd chin, maybe the head honchos over at World Of Wonder will check this out and see what I see: a Bunny chat show on TV! Maybe we can call it Chat Sow? Just putting that out there to Randy Barbato, Fenton Bailey, Thairin Smothers, RuPaul Charles and all the other crazies at WOW. I don’t like soundbites, I don’t like any message that can be reduced to a hashtag, but I do enjoy in-depth chats with interesting folks if people still have the attention span for them. LOGO, are you listening? Anyhoo–check it out and let me know whatcha think! After you’ve finished masturbating to my chins!

Watch the fun below!

In addition to the big ticket/top tier LGBT heroes of the year (Caitlyn Jenner, Aiden Dowling, Andreja Peijic, Robbie Rogers, Jeremy Scott, and, um, Roland Emmerich?) OUT magazine is saluting four of our favorite people in the annual OUT100 list: Wowlebrities Violet Chachki, Miss Fame, Danny Franzese, and Candis Cayne! Congratulations, y’all! Check out the fab pics and great write-ups below!

Violet Chachki, Drag Performer

Photography by Ryan Pfluger in Brooklyn on September 17, 2015. Styling by Michael Cook. Prop Stylist: Greg Garry.

At this point, RuPaul’s Drag Race has anointed victors of all stripes, from a vaudevillian narcoleptic (Jinkx Monsoon) to a workhorse comedy queen (Bianca Del Rio). Violet Chachki, season 7’s winner, doesn’t fall into any one category. She’s an aerialist. She’s a Bettie Page doppelgänger with a taste for S&M. She’s also a frequenter of thrift shops. “I’ve always felt very at ease and inspired looking at and touching unique items — tchotchkes, if you will,” she says. “It’s part of my creative process.” Though grateful for achieving the “personal goal” of taking the crown, Chachki, like her fellow season 7 alum Miss Fame (see page 132), is all about exploring drag beyond Drag Race, the very mentality that sparked her reaction to the Supreme Court ruling in favor of marriage equality. “I remember thinking, finally!” Chachki says. “Now, what’s next?”

miss-fame-750

Miss Fame, Drag Performer, Model, Makeup Artist

Photography by Ryan Pfluger in New York on September 3, 2015.

RuPaul’s Drag Race may have given Miss Fame global exposure, but the season 7 contestant was never meant to be bound to the confines of a reality show. Born Kurtis Dam-Mikkelsen, Fame’s moniker doubles as a self-fulfilling prophecy: a brand name built on the assurance that her artistry and notoriety would crack the mainstream. The self-proclaimed “Rolls Royce of Drag,” Fame is seeing her dreams come true, becoming the first drag model to appear in Elle magazine, serving as a makeup consultant on major news networks, and boasting a peerless ability to paint and transform herself (even other queens want the “Fame face”). Yet despite her striking success story she still has humility in her blood, inspiring others as both a queer celebrity and an openly recovered addict. Among her own heroes is another “Miss”: Miss Jane Nelson, her high school art teacher. “She had my back and was a positive influence who pushed me to be creative,” Fame says. “I learned from her and want to contribute to others’ lives in my own way.”

Photography by Ryan Pfluger in Los Angeles on September 28, 2015. Styling by Michael Cook. Hair: Dallin James at The Wall Group. Makeup: Harper at Exclusive Artists Management. Tank top by Calvin Klein. Cardigan by Tommy Hilfiger.

Since coming out publicly in 2014, Daniel Franzese — widely recognized as Mean Girls’ fabulous GBF, Damian — has proved to be anything but “too gay to function.” This year the actor embodied the role of Eddie, an instantly lovable, unapologetic HIV-positive bear on the second season of HBO’s Looking, before becoming an ambassador for the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. Now Franzese is completing the first season of the new ABC Family series Recovery Road, while continuing to voice his support for LGBT causes. “We are different and cool and fierce and strange,” he says. “That’s the beauty of our rainbow.”

Candis Cayne, actress

Photography by Ryan Pfluger in Marina del Rey, Calif., on October 1, 2015. Styling by Michael Cook. Hair AND Makeup: Harper at Exclusive Artists Management. dress by Elie tahari available at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Trans actress Candis Cayne made history with her recurring role on ABC’s 2007 series Dirty Sexy Money. But being a trailblazer isn’t easy, and on E!’s I Am Cait, Cayne expressed some vulnerability, the flip side to her glamorous, proud persona. “I have always put on airs, because it’s part of my stage act, and it’s part of being the first trans woman on a network television show,” she says. “I had to represent our community. There couldn’t be a loose brick in this wall! So it was cathartic for me to talk about the problems I’ve had being in this industry, and the misogyny in our gay community against trans women.” Cayne says the enormous outpouring of goodwill and amplified trans visibility due to I Am Cait — on which Cayne has been a confidante and guide to Caitlyn Jenner — have been incredible. “I know it’s changing the world,” she says. “I’ve always been fighting a gale force storm pushing against my chest. For the first time in my life, especially in my industry, I feel like the wind is at my back. Everything is opening up for us now.”

And be sure to check out the entire list here!

Scientists Predict What Little Prince George Will Look Like When He Grows Up. Hint: He’s HAAAAAAWT

It’s always a bit of a tossup when it comes to royal genetics. For hundreds of years the were BEYOND FUGLY with underbites and nonexistent chins and lazy eyes and hunchbacks and whatnot. Then, lo and behold, Princess Diana entered the gene pool and now we have Prince Harry and the kiiiiind of hot Prince William. So where do you suppose 2-year-old Prince George will fall on the beauty spectrum? New age-progression technology from scientists at the University at Bradford in England, make it easy to imagine how the young royal will age.

From Today:

Using software to combine the prince’s current facial features and the features of his family members, they’ve predicted what he’ll look like at age 7, 20, 40 and even 60 years old, by which time he might just be King George.

“So we take these roughly 30 to 40 facial features … [and] we map it into the machine and then we produce the age,” Bradford professor Hassan Ugail told Reuters.

The scientists claim the progression software is 80 percent accurate, and therefore more precise than existing technology.

Check out the future King George. I’d say he got the “good” genes. WOWZA!

Justin Bieber seems to be on a roll with magazine covers lately. This week, the iconic British fashion magazine i-D has revealed its new issue with a gorgeous photo of a semi-scruffy Biebs on the cover photographed by the super amazing Alasdair McLellan:

Those eyebrows tho.

Justin reveals a pretty interesting tidbit in the interview: Apparently he has a new pet monkey.

“It wasn’t a weird thing for me. Obviously people looked at it like, ‘Why does he have a monkey?’ But if you could get a monkey, wouldn’t you want a monkey?”

He gives me a “duh” look, as if to say “haven’t you seen Marcel in Friends? Haven‘t you heard of Michael Jackson’s Bubbles?” You couldn’t love him any more for it.

“Come on! Let’s not look at that as a weird thing, that’s a pretty cool thing to have. It’s a monkey!”

I mean, I guess he has a point. I’d get a monkey if I could. Why not? He also goes on discuss what it was like working with Kanye West on his new album, Purpose, which drops this Friday (November 13):

“Kanye’s the best. He just talks. For so long. And it’s so dope. Even when it sounds crazy, I know that I’m listening to how he feels because he always puts things into such a different perspective.” He pauses. “He makes you wonder. To get that stamp of approval from him made me feel comfortable with the project.”

Well, alright. According to the tracklist, though, there’s no Kanye (or Drake) feature on the album, so my life is basically over. But from what has been released so far, it sounds like it’s going to be Justin’s best album yet.

For all you Beliebers, here’s the rest of the interview!
