#TBT: Cher & Tina Turner, “Shame! Shame! Shame!”

Have You SEEN The Revenant Trailer yet?

The Revenant (aka the movie that gave Leonardo fleas) has a dramatic new trailer that definitely positions Leo as a front-runner in the 2016 Oscar race. The movie, which is based on true events in 1823, follows fur trapper Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) after he is attacked by a bear, robbed of everything by fellow hunters, and left to die. Glass, who is furious and grieving the loss of his family, manages to survive and sets out to hunt down John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Watch the heart-pounding action below.

I’m thinking the Best Actor race is the one to watch this year, with all our 1999 heartthrobs duking it out. Leo, Matt Damon (The Martian), and Johnny Depp (Black Mass) are definitely ront-runners, with Jake Gyllenhaal (Southpaw), Will Smith (Concussion), Brad Pitt (By The Sea), and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Walk) all possible possibilities. What a race that would be! (Of course, it’s Eddie Redmayne’s to lose, but we can still hope that Leo has a chance. He just needs it more than the others, doesn’t he?)

At a spot called Dead Man’s Cross in Dartmouth, Devon – where criminals were once hanged in the 15th century – a streetlight and sign cluster cast the eerie shadow of a hanged man…. and social media is FREAKING THE EFF OUT.

Pictures of the shadow at a crossroads between Milton Lane and Waterpool Road have gone viral after being shared on social media.

…Paula Johnston said: ‘Definitely not Photoshop. Many locals, including myself, have been to the spot and looked for ourselves. ‘It appears on a house opposite the crossroads known as Dead Man’s Cross.’

A spokesman for Dartmouth Museum said hangings were common at Dead Man’s Cross in the 1400s. DUN DUN DUN. (via The Daily What)

#ConspiracyTheory: Was Avril Lavigne Killed Off and Replaced with a Body-Double?

107962, NEW YORK, NEW YORK - Tuesday November 5, 2013. Avril Lavigne makes an appearance at 'Good Morning America' show after promoting her new album in Times Square, NYC. A group of Avril Lavigne superfans from Brazil – who’ve grown increasingly disappointed by her musical output over the past couple of years – have concocted a theory that the “Complicated” singer is secretly dead and her doppelgänger is now running the show.

Apparently in the early 2000s, after her first flush with flame exhausted and exasperated her, Avril hired a lookalike named Melissa Vandella to confuse the paparazzi that were constantly pursuing her.

Then…

[Avril’s first album] Let Go is a difficult album to follow-up. But try this: Shortly after writing sessions began on Avril Ramona Lavigne’s follow-up record, her Grandfather passed away. During this time, submerged under the pressure of releasing a new record, the toil of fame, and this new loss, Avril Lavigne entered a deep and dark depression. She would later be found dead at her home and her family, record label, and anyone else in the know kept quiet.

Avril Lavigne’s doppelganger steps in to take her place. Yet in an interesting and perhaps all too convenient turn of events, the double leaks details involving Avril’s passing in the record’s lyrics, booklet, and promotional materials—most specifically in the songs “My Happy Ending” and “Nobody’s Home.” In 2004, Under My Skin is released. And it’s from here that fans, specifically those in Brazil, started to notice something is afoot.

Two Things: Rick Owens Pays Homage to Leigh Bowery During S/S Fashion Show

Paris Fashion Week: Rick Owens showed his S/S 2016 line today, and included a number of upside-down models strapped to other models, clinging on for dear life. It was a clear reference to Leigh Bowery‘s infamous “birthing” outfit, in which he gave birth onstage to his wife Nicola, who had been strapped to him for hours, unbeknownst to anyone. Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. I just love it when fashion references great moments in history. (via The Muse)

Kim Davis’s attorneys at the Liberty Counsel are pushing back after a Vatican statement this morning that Pope Francis did NOT request a meeting with Kim Davis, nor did he offer her unconditional support. Writes the Liberty Counsel:

“Despite a statement this morning by a Vatican official, the Pope’s own words about conscientious objection being a human right and his private meeting with Kim Davis indicate support for the universal right of conscientious objection, even for government officials. The meeting with Kim Davis was initiated by the Vatican, and the private meeting occurred at the Vatican Embassy in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, September 24. This meeting was a private meeting without any other members of the public present.”

The Liberty Counsel posted several photos featuring Davis and her husband allegedly waiting in the Vatican Embassy waiting room, and of the van in which Vatican security supposedly picked them up.

Janet Jackson’s New Album Makes The World Stop; The Diva’s Top 10 Hits Ranked

janet-jackson-unbreakable-album-cover

It’s been almost seven years since Janet Jackson last released an album but today marks the beginning of a new era in the Janet HERstory book. Her eleventh studio album, Unbreakable, is FINALLY here after a months-long rollout that included banger singles “No Sleeep” featuring J. Cole and “BURNITUP!” featuring Missy Elliott, as well as a brand new world tour.

Essentially, this is one of Janet’s most consistent albums to date. Thankfully, it lacks the trend-pandering of Madonna‘s Rebel Heart as it feels equally as sophisticated, self-assured, and experimental as Janet’s previous masterpieces, Janet. and The Velvet Rope (of which, the closest answer to for this generation has been Beyoncé’s game-changing Beyoncé).

Some RuPaul’s Drag Race divas have taken to social media to express their excitement about Unbreakable:

Missy Elliott is really excited too:

In honor of the new album, here are my picks for Miss Jackson’s top ten:

10. “Feedback”

9. “Miss You Much”

8. “The Pleasure Principle”

7. “Come Back To Me”

6. “Again”

5. “I Get So Lonely”

4. “That’s The Way Love Goes”

3. “Together Again (Deeper Remix)”

2. “Rhythm Nation”

1. “If”

The upcoming gay-rights biopic, Freeheld, stars Julianne Moore as Laurel Hester, as a New Jersey police lieutenant who fought for the right to leave her pension benefits to her girlfriend (Ellen Page) after Hester was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Miley Cyrus recently came out as both gender-fluid and pansexual, and started her Happy Hippie Foundation to aid young LGBTQ youth. The song, which was just released was written by Linda Perry, has Cyrus sounding in full voice. So, you may just be hearing an LGBT acceptance speech for Best Song at the Oscars next year. Listen.

Hands Of Love

When the white flag sails, covered in streaks of light
There’ll be an endless sea, of us rising up
And the preacher man, and the preacher’s son
Stand on and on, just like everyone

Me longing to be free, I’ll let you fade away
We shed some many dreams, don’t let them fade away

In the hands of love, we carry home
Stronger than we started
We’re ashamed of the trail behind us
Weakest is the blinded
Who we are comes alive, yeah
Who we are comes to life

When the water spills, the glass will break
It drips like tears, rubbing up your face
And the hands will crawl, for the dance of war
But the saints of joy, their bickering will soar

Me longing to be free, I’ll let you fade away
We shed some many dreams, don’t let them fade away

In the hands of love, we carry home
Stronger than we started
We’re ashamed of the trail behind us
Weakest is the blinded
Who we are comes alive, yeah
Who we are comes to life

Me longing to be free, I’ll let you fade away

In the hands of love, we carry home
Stronger that we started
We’re ashamed of the trail behind us
Weakest is the blinded
Who we are comes alive, yeah
Who we are comes to life

We come alive
We come alive
Come alive
We come alive

October 3: Its YOUR Birthday, Bitch!

#BornThisDay: Writer, Gore Vidal

Gore Vidal at 21

October 3, 1924Gore Vidal:

“A Narcissist is someone better looking than you are”

I played him once. Well, not exactly, but I based a character that I once portrayed, a theatre critic, in Tom Stoppard‘s brilliant The Real Inspector Hound, on Gore Vidal, taken from his appearances on talk shows.

Born Eugene Luther Gore Vidal at West Point, NY, the brilliant, erudite, perceptive & sarcastic, Vidal could be my own single writer library. He is the author of 23 novels, 5 plays, 3 volumes of memoirs, numerous screenplays & short stories, & over 400 essays. With his special pedigree (his grandfather was a US senator & his father was a member of Roosevelt’s Cabinet), good-looks, good-luck, & talent, Vidal was a witness to almost a century of American political & social life.

Vidal was a tried & true progressive promoter of gay visibility. He was brave at a time when he could have had everything to lose. His third novel, The City And The Pillar (1948), was the first mainstream novel to deal openly with male homosexuality. Vidal lacked support from his own editor, who forced him to make the already dark ending less compelling by having the gay main character become a murderer, killing his straight lifelong crush. When the novel was released, The NY Times reviewer was so outraged by the depravity that the newspaper refused to review Vidal’s next 5 books. Time & Newsweek vowed never to review another book by him.

Forthcoming with gay themes & characters in his fiction, & lending strong support to Sexual Freedom & Equal Rights, Vidal still famously believed in gay sex acts, but not gay people. He claimed to be bisexual, but his close relationships with women like actors Joanne Woodward & Claire Bloom were strictly platonic. Vidal claimed that he & his partner of 50+ years, Howard Austen, only had sex at the start of their relationship. Vidal never officially came out of the closet; the very idea of coming out was abhorrent to him.

Vidal:

“‘Homoerotic’ means to lust for one’s own sex, which I certainly did a lot of in my youth, ‘Homosexual’ implies really an organization of one’s life around it, & I never did that & always kept my options open. Needless to say I was immediately categorized with The City And The Pillar when I need not have been, and never regretted it for one minute. I always thought it was my opinion of others which mattered, not their opinion of me. I was less distressed than you might think for being so categorized but always hesitated to categorize anyone else unless they insisted on it.”

When ABC News hired Vidal & William F. Buckley to cover the political conventions in 1968, the rancor & resentment came to a head when Vidal called Buckley a “pro-crypto Nazi”.  Buckley ranted in his upper-class Atlantic accent:

“Now listen, you queer. Stop calling me a crypto Nazi, or I’ll sock you in the goddamn face & you’ll stay plastered.”

Buckley continued to attack Vidal in Esquire Magazine just months after The Stonewall Riots, claiming that Vidal: “was proclaiming the normalcy of his affliction” & comparing him to a drug pusher for promoting his gayness.

This little fascinating & entertaining slice of history is the subject of Best Of Enemies (2015), a documentary film directed by Robert Gordon & Morgan Neville about the famed televised debates.

Vidals most famous series of novels: Burr (1973), Lincoln (1984), 1876 (1976), Empire (1987), Hollywood (1990), Washington DC (1967), & The Golden Age (2000) are fictional histories of the USA from the American Revolution to the recent past.

“Apparently, a democracy is a place where numerous elections are held at great cost without issues & with interchangeable candidates.”

Vidal ran as a Democrat for the House Of Representatives from New York in 1960 & the Senate from California in 1982. He lost both elections. Vidal turned his political genius into literature, chronicling the decline & fall of the American Empire in a series of essays United States: Essays 1952-1992, which won the 1993 National Book Award. Vidal’s best essays are collected in The Selected Essays Of Gore Vidal (2008).

Vidal’s Point To Point Navigation (2006) is a memoir about dealing with the loss of his partner Auster, who left this world in 2003. As always, Vidal’s personal drama reflects the larger political & historical picture of the USA, in this case George W.’s legacy of war, torture, & autocratic rule. The book’s title refers to Vidal’s flight service during World War II, a method of visual navigation in which one flies from one landmark to the next. It is a very readable follow-up to one of my favorite books of all time, his memoir Palimpsest (1995).

I love this moment from Point To Point Navigation: Austen asks from his deathbed: “Didn’t it go by awfully fast?” Vidal answers:

“Of course it had. We had been too happy & the gods cannot bear the happiness of mortals.”

Often a conundrum, Vidal actually begins a paragraph in his final memoir Gore Vidal: Snapshots In History’s Glare (2009): “Despite never having been very social…”, & then proceeds to tell of asking Andy Warhol, Mick & Bianca Jagger to visit him & Austen at their villa outside Ravello, Italy. Vidal:

“Our old friends the Newmans (Paul & Joanne) used to drop by. So did Lauren Hutton, Susan Sarandon, Rudolf Nureyev, Hillary Clinton, Sting, James Taylor, Leonard Bernstein, Johnny Carson, Bruce Springsteen & many others.”

I have seen photographs of young Vidal setting off to war & later frolicking with Tennessee Williams; & of a middle-aged Vidal running for Congress & hobnobbing with JFK (Vidal shared a stepfather with Jackie Kennedy). Williams told Vidal that JFK had ‘a nice ass’; Vidal told Kennedy, who answered: “Why, that’s very exciting.”

Vidal left us with a treasury of quips, bon mots & his vast knowledge of literature & history, particularly American History. He is a smart observer & his sharp insights cut down the powerful. He does it with aplomb:

“I never miss a chance to have sex or appear on television.”

“There is no human problem which could not be solved if people would simply do as I advise.”

“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, & not giving a damn.”

Vidal left this world in summer 2012. Austen & Vidal are buried together Rock Creek Cemetery in DC. Vidal continues to fascinate me with his wit & insight. He is an American Treasure.

“As the age of television progresses the Reagans will be the rule, not the exception. To be perfect for television is all a President has to be these days.”

OHEMMGEE!!! This is a drop the mic moment for sure! Two of my fave queens, Lady Gaga and Tom Ford just SLAYED this super awesome video for Tom Ford’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection. Inspired by disco and 70s dance show Soul Train, fashion uber god/director Nick Knight has Gaga dancing down the Soul Train line in Ford’s latest collection, flanked by equally groovy models. And if that’s not enough, Gaga apparently has a new track coming out too! The video is soundtracked by a cover version of Chic’s 1978 hit song I Want Your Love, featuring original band member Nile Rodgers, and Lady Gaga on vocals. THIS BETTER COME OUT AS A SINGLE!!!

“Instead of having a traditional show this season, I wanted to think about how to present a collection in a cinematic way that was designed from its inception to be presented online. I have always loved Soul Train which used to be on TV in the Seventies; as it was as much about the clothes as the music, I asked Nile Rodgers to collaborate on a new version of one of his great hits from that time, ‘I Want Your Love,’ and worked with Gaga to record the vocals. I then staged a full show in Los Angeles and filmed it with Gaga on the runway.”
