It’s Naomi Campbell VS Lady Gaga In American Horror Story: Hotel

Naomi Campbell is the latest to join the (already bloated?) cast of next season’s American Horror story, playing a “fashion editor who pays the ultimate price for her critiques.” We’ve already been told that Lady Gaga‘s character in the series will be involved with fashion, which sets the stage for some explosive scenes between the two. Naomi will also have scenes with an evil Angela Bassett and possibly other castmates Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Kathy Bates, Lily Rabe, Matt Bomer, Emma Roberts, Chloe Sevigny, Wes Bentley, Finn Wittrock, Max Greenfield, Denis O’Hare and Cheyenne Jackson.

Sometimes…. sometimes… I just wish Ryan would worry less about stunt casting and adding gratuitous plotlines for the A-listers he wants to be friends with, and more about tightening up the overall story and making the best show he can make. I always think back to that completely pointless plotline in Coven with Patti LuPone that went ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE, and was only included because Ryan Murphy is a theater queen who wanted to hang out with Evita. Not saying that Naomi will be completely gratuitous, or might not ending up being absolutely fabulous, but I’m pretty sure he only hired her so that bloggers would trumpet the headline “Naomi VS Lady Gag!” – which I did. And now I hate myself. (via HuffPo)

Paintings

Somebody sent me this Craigslist offering: “For sale: a set of TEN (10) Original Acrylic on Canvas CLUB KIDS Paintings, done by Famed Pop Artist Clayton LeFevre in the late 1980s. Each painting is 36″ x 60″.” And, look! There they are! Pictures of the old gang: Kenny Kenny, Sebastian Jr., Screamin Rachel, Page, Angel Jack, Codie Ravioli, R Couri Hay, Michael, and MEEEEE.

And while I don’t think I’ve ever seen them before, I remember posing for my portrait like it was yesterday. I was really strung out at the time and positively skeletal, which in retrospect made for a lovely picture. The outfit was green, though, I wonder why he painted it red and purple? I guess to better match my hair? Oh well. The pictures are for sale “directly by The Only Authorized Representatives of The Estate of Artist Clayton LeFevre” which is incredibly sad, as I did not realize that Clayton had passed. Dear, sweet Clayton.

The listing states: “We would have liked to sell them as a set, however, we will consider selling them individually.”  No word on the price, but prospective customers should inquire here.

Via Craigslist:

Clayton was a renowned artist, last based out of Brooklyn, NY and was most know for his Pop Art Style. Clayton was commissioned as one of an exclusive group of artists, by Michel Roux and Carillon Importers, to paint Original Art for their Absolut Vodka Campaign. Clayton created a series, which included Absolut Citron and Absolut Peppar paintings, as well as, Grand Marnier and La Grande Passion. Original, Numbered, Hand Signed Lithographs of all four series, are available from the Estate.

In addition, Clayton created a series of paintings for The Cougar Fund, where he worked on a fund raiser along with the famous Animal Conservationist, Jane Goodall. His paintings were made into Limited Edition Lithographs, to raise money for animal preservation. Further, Clayton was renowned for many projects, the most known, was his famous “100 Club”, where he painted two portraits of a celebrity, gave one to the celebrity and had them autograph the other for his own personal collection. Most of this collection was recently sold by the famous Julian’s Auction House in Beverly Hills, CA.

Finally, Clayton painted many socially controversial series, including a 10 painting series of the infamous Club Kids of NYC fame of the late 1980s and early 1990s, led by Michael Alig and James St. James. He also created a series called The American Dream Series, making a social commentary on the diversity between the “Haves” and “Have Nots”. His final series focused on the “Average New York Worker”, called the NY 12, featuring a Sanitation Worker, a Parks Worker, a Taxi Driver and a Social Worker. Unfortunately, Clayton’s sudden, untimely passing, left the series unfinished, along with so much potential.

Watch: NYC Drag Star Elizabeth James in “Same Mistakes”

NYC superstar drag performer Elizabeth James (a mash-up of Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean) is one of the most talked about and adored queens on the scene right now. She’s booked constantly, and always turns the crowd out…giving fab dance moves, face, and ALWAYS a friendly smile. Her latest project is a series of videos shot by Richert Schnorr, the first being Same Mistakes, soundtracked by indie pop band The Echo Friendly. It’s inspired by some of James’ icons…Madonna’s “Rain”, “Freedom” by George Michael…and a dash of the delusional Norma Desmond character in the 1950s Sunset Boulevard film…and she looks uber sickening in EVERY frame!

“This video is about my personal experience with the demons of night life. Moving to NYC three years ago, I was so excited to be a part of everything! However, when the taste of vodka and the smell of cocaine changed from ‘Oh fun to oh fuck’, I realized I had to grow up and get my head back in the game. When RuPaul said, ‘You want to be a star, well stars work’ I listened, and went back to work.”

If you’re in NYC, catch Elizabeth James at The Elizabeth James Show on Thursdays, and her cabaret show at the iconic West Village Duplex on Sundays with Ruby Roo.

Eakins selfportrait

Self-portrait

July 25, 1844Thomas Cowperthaite Eakins is one of the American painters that I admire the most. I am quite enamored of late 19th & early 20th century American painters & Eakins epitomizes everything I love about the American Realist Movement.

Eakins was unsuccessful as an artist in his lifetime, but he is now thought to be one of the most influential & important figures in American painting & photography. His work is significant for its homo-eroticism. He is also noted for his teaching methods & for his insistence on teaching men & women together in the same classroom, which was groundbreaking & controversial in his era.

Eakins was raised & educated in Philadelphia. He studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy Of Fine Arts, plus he spent several years studying in Paris & Spain. He returned to the Pennsylvania Academy as an instructor in 1876, & became its Director in 1882. His teaching was unsettling for many at the time, especially his interest in instructing his students in all aspects of the human figure, including the nude. There were high tensions between Eakins & the Academy’s Board of Directors throughout his teaching career. He was finally fired in 1886 for removing the loincloth of a male model in a class where female students were present. That’s right, he got the axe for showing the girls a peen & it wasn’t even his own.

Deeply disturbed by the dismissal, his later paintings concentrated on portraiture, usually of friends & family. This work was realistic but with a technique that went beyond just pure representation. He was influenced by early photographers & did many of his own photographs as studies, including many male nudes. I find this photographic work to exceptional, equal to the paintings.

Eakins was married 3 times, but they were very difficult & unsuccessful relationships. Eakins certainly had problems relating to women & he had a documented interest in exhibitionism, sadism, & voyeurism. He was also depressed, arrogant, & full of despair at not selling his work & for his conflicted desires for the young men he painted.

A reader recently took me task saying that I made everybody gay. This has some truth, but after decades of my favorite figures being de-gayed in film treatments, biographies & history books, it seems only fair. Eakins’ gayness is disputed, but the paintings & photographs speak volumes. His male nudes, his close friendship with Walt Whitman (infamous fo his full frontal nude painting of an aged Whitman) & his belief that a naked woman was the most beautiful thing in nature “except a naked man” are a bit of a giveaway, says me.

I have a large “coffee table” book of his work that has given me much pleasure. For more about his life, try the excellent Eakins Revealed: The Secret Life Of An American Artist (2005) by Henry Adams.

Along with John Singer Sargent & James Whistler, his work has been very influential in defining my taste in painting & my passion for American Art.

Cops from the NYPD Emergency Services Unit captured the three-foot reptile at 205th Street and 9th Avenue in Inwood, police said. The 34th Precinct tweeted;

“So this alligator was crossing 9th Ave in #Inwood…no, really.”

Police took him to the NYC Animal Control Center and they removed duct tape from the alligator’s snout and housed him in an aquarium with a pool of water and a heat lamp. ACC’s Alexandra Silver said in the statement;

“Sadly the alligator, which staff had named CockadoodleQ, died this morning. We have no knowledge of the conditions CockadoodleQ had lived in prior to his arrival that contributed to his death.”

The animal was likely someone’s pet that either escaped or was released. However, keeping exotic animals –including alligators– as pets is illegal in NYC. (via My Fox NY)

#BornThisDay: Actor, Vivian Vance (Ethel!)

vance v

July 26, 1909Vivian Vance’s most famous character Ethel Mertz was a less-than-prosperous landlady of an East 68th Street Manhattan brownstone, owned along with husband Fred Mertz. Fred was played by William Frawley, who was 22 years older. The 2 actors shared great on-screen comedic chemistry, but they really did not get along when not filming & never socialized. Vance complained about his age. Frawley had heard that she stated that he should be playing her father rather than her husband. Apparently Frawley loathed Vance on sight.

But the rumors that continue to swirl around the beloved I Love Lucy (1951-57, & in other forms from 1957-1961): Vance & Desi Arnaz were lovers, Lucille Ball & Vance hated each other, Ball was unusually cruel to Vance, Vance & Ball had a passionate affair, Little Ricky was gay, the McGillicuddy family was black, Mary Jane Croft was into bondage, you’ve heard them all.

I Love Lucy, the Ricardos & the Mertz duo were a huge hit. Lucy’s wacky misadventures only gained that apex of hilarity when they featured Ball & Vance entangled in some scheme gone wrong. Vance’s talents as a comedic sidekick were rewarded. She received 4 Emmy nominations & had one win for Best Supporting Actress.

She always wanted to be an actor, & in the early 1930s Vance moved from New Mexico to NYC & found work in the theater, landing her first Broadway role in the Jerome Kern musical Music In The Air (1934). She was pretty, could sing & dance, & she gained featured roles in musicals: Cole Porter’s Red Hot & Blue (1936), Harold Arlen/Yip Harburg’s Hooray For What!, & Marc Blitzstein’s The Cradle Will Rock (1937). She replaced Ethel Merman in Anything Goes when the star took the Cole Porter show to London.

In 1947, Vance suffered a nervous breakdown. She had gone into the comic lead, a slut, late in the long-run of the Broadway play Voice Of The Turtle by gay playwright John Van Druten, & then went with the first national company to Chicago. In what had to be a nightmare, Vance had the breakdown on stage. She returned to New Mexico where she had started her career. Vance took some time off. Sometimes a girl needs to regather her senses. But, she moved to California & bravely faced her fears head-on by returning to the same role in the same play at the La Jolla Playhouse. This gig would lead to her most famous role. Her friend, director Marc Daniels, had recommended her for the part of Ethel on Ball & Arnaz’s new TV show. Arnaz went to see Vance in Voice Of The Turtle & decided on the spot that she had to have the role.

Vance was not sure she wanted to play Ethel Mertz. In the early 1950s, TV was not prestige & Vance was angling for a film career. She had been cast in The Secret Fury (1950) with Claudette Colbert & Robert Ryan & The Blue Veil (1951) with Jane Wyman & Charles Laughton. Smart thing that she decided to accept. A great-looking gal, she even agreed to wear unflattering costumes as the character. Did Ball insist that she look frumpy? I am not certain.

After I Love Lucy ended in 1957, Vance appeared on a series of specials featuring the original characters from the show. In 1962, when Ball returned to a TV series, having divorced Arnaz as husband on & off-screen & as a producing partner, she convinced Vance to be part of the cast. A slimmer, more glamorous Vance again played second banana to Ball. Vance was living in Connecticut & she commuted to Hollywood to film the show. She grew weary of the travel & became an occasional guest star instead of a series regular in 1965 until The Lucy Show ended in 1972.

Always a talented song & dance performer, Vance had developed a fear of using her singing voice during I Love Lucy. The first time she showed-off her pipes was in The Pleasant Peasant (Ethel & Lucy perform is an operetta). The episode was an emotional breakthrough for her.

Open about her various neuroses on talk shows & in interviews, Vance would stop for a therapist session on her way to the studio every morning the first 3 of seasons of I Love Lucy. Her battle with depression did not embarrass Vance & she was open about it. When she traveled, she would visit hospitals talk to people who suffered from severe depression.

I have trouble accepting the simplistic idea that Ball & Vance were always at odds. They simply disagreed as professionals & friends, but they also supported each other. I am sure that it was not easy to always be fresh & upbeat during a long-running series. But there was inequity between the star & the second-billed Vance. When Ball was pregnant she took Vance’s dressing room, which was smaller but closer to the soundstage. Ball had dressers helping her with the quick costume changes. Poor Vance was forced to crawl across the set & lighting cables, change by all by herself & then get back to the stage.

In the late 1960s & 1970s, Vance was a regular on the summer stock circuit. When I was doing summer theatre on Cape Cod in 1973, she was performing nearby in Butterflies Are Free. A mtual friend made sure I was able to attend final dress rehearsal. Vance had not lost any of her crack comic chops & graciously chatted with our group of young actors, encouraging us to stick with our dreams of being performers.

By summer 1979, Vance, battling that damn cancer, suffered a stroke. The great character actor & I Love Lucy cast member Mary Wickes, close to Vance & Ball, accompanied ball on a last visit Vance. Wickes claims that on the car ride back, that Ball was inconsolable. When Vance took her final curtain call a few days later, Ball said that as she watched reruns of the 2 together:

“I find that now I usually spend my time looking at Viv. Viv was sensational. & back then, there were things I had to do. I was in the projection room for some reason, & I just couldn’t concentrate on her. But now I can. & I enjoy every move that Viv made. She was something.”

Vance married 4 times. Her third husband,  movie bit player Philip Ober, was abusive & contributed to her mental health issues. Her last husband John Dodds, a literary agent, was gay. When they tied the knot in 1961, Vance was 52 years & might have been simply looking for companionship. Dodds had boyfriends & Vance seemed to not mind. Better a queer than a brute.

On her own gay rumors, Vance stated:

“Lucille Ball & I were just like sisters. We adored each other’s company. She & I had so many laughs that we could hardly get through filming without cracking up. Then I began hearing that Lucille & I were too close. My first husband disapproved of our closeness. ‘People are talking about you two,” he’d say. ‘You ought to be careful about the hugging & kissing you do on the show’.”

“The word in Pacific Palisades, where I lived, was that something was wrong with me, something my analyst wouldn’t tell me about. That sent me leaping into my car & driving 30 miles to talk to my analyst, Dr. Steele. ‘Is there anything the matter with me that you’ve never told me?’ I wanted to know. Dr. Steele reassured me there wasn’t.”

#FinaléFunny: Key & Peele Is Ending After This Season!

key-peele

Key & Peele is ending its run on Comedy Central after their fifth season. Series co-creator and star Keegan-Michael Key told TheWrap;

“It was just time for us to explore other things, together and apart. I compare it to Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. We might make a movie and then do our own thing for three years and then come back and do another movie.

I’m thinking we could do that every three years – take a year, go bang out a movie. That’s the plan right now.”

Their fifth season premiered July 8 and will run through September. All of season 5’s episodes have already been shot and on Twitter, Jordan Peele confirmed the news as well. Personally, I think they’ve been on such a roll that they must have said, to continue they wanted a LOT more money and Comedy Central said no. Earlier this month was nominated for multiple Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Variety Sketch Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Key. Why would you want to let a show go received a prestigious Peabody Award in 2013. Key infamously backed up President Barack Obama at the White House Press Corp dinner with his Luther impression. I predict something similar might happen for Amy Schumer, not that she’s a movie star. In other words, cable TV doesn’t pay THAT much – unless you are Jon Stewart.

#AnyReservations?: Aby Rosen Asked for $3 Million PER MONTH in Rent. Now, The Four Seasons Is Closing Its Doors

Aby Rosen in front of the Seagram’s Building and the Picasso tapestry he had removed from it’s lobby

Unknown

The Four Seasons restaurant has been in the Seagram Building since 1959. (My first New York City job was a host there in 1980, btw) Now the power lunch institution apparently has an end in sight. Aby Rosen purchased the landmark building in 2000 and has had it in for the restaurant ever since. He stirred up a battle with preservationists (and others) last year when he pushed to have the restaurant’s iconic Picasso curtain removed and proposed changes to the landmark interior (he was denied any changes except replacing the carpet). Rosen said at a press conference, according to the New York Times;

“We are not desecrating. I think we are respecting and celebrating. Their lease is up in July, so they’re out…If something was designed in 1958 and it’s not as functional in 2015, you ask for a change…I’m going to restore the Four Seasons back to its glory. I love the guys but their time has passed, and sometimes something great needs to go. It’s not a museum.”

He has now struck a deal to replace the Four Seasons with a new restaurant from the men behind downtown hot spots Dirty French, Santina, and Carbone. This news isn’t exactly a surprise. Rosen had made it clear that he was unlikely to renew the restaurant’s lease when it expired and was asking $3 million a month in rent. Now, Rosen will be a partner in the new restaurant from chefs Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi, and their business partner Jeff Zalaznick. They’ll reportedly take over the space when the lease in July of next year.

The chefs have tried to assured the crowd of regulars that the new restaurant would continue to suit their power-lunching needs. Zalaznick said;

“We’ll make them that salad. We’re not trying to upset the standard. We’re trying to improve it.”

This may just end up being the beginning of the end for the space. Perhaps it will attract a hip new crowd but might also be that no one can make a success where there once was one of the most celebrated restaurants in the world. Rosen bought the building from the Seagram’s family who built it. Edgar Bronfman, son of the Seagram’s founder said in a statement:

It is fitting that one of the greatest cities in the world is home to one of the greatest modernist buildings ever built, the Seagram building, hailed by the New York Times as the single greatest building of the 20th Century. Central to the greatness of Seagram, is the space known as The Four Seasons restaurant. I have proudly been a part of its ownership for the past 25 years.

At the Four Seasons, we have sought to carry on our commercial operations while always respecting and preserving Philip Johnson’s vision for the space. That has been extremely challenging for the past decade or so as our restaurant first dealt with the economic consequences of the financial crisis of 2008-9 and then with our landlord, RFR, who refused to indicate its willingness to renew our lease, making our investment in capital improvements impractical at best.

I acknowledge RFR has the right not to renew The Four Season’s lease. But what is at stake here today is not the fate of a restaurant. What is at stake here is whether ownership trumps preservation, whether deception triumphs over transparency, and whether the wealth, power and influence of a building’s proprietors can trample both the fundamental integrity of an historic space and the commission created to protect and preserve such spaces.

I submit that not only are RFR’s proposed changes wrong, but they are most assuredly only the beginning of the changes RFR will make. Why do I say this? Why should we distrust RFR? Well, if past is prologue, we need look no further than the episode of Le Tricorne. Why is that great Picasso stage curtain no longer hanging? Simply because Mr. Rosen of RFR wanted “that Schmatte” out of “his” building. To justify its request for its immediate removal, RFR claimed falsely there was an urgent, critical need to repair the travertine wall behind the curtain. As we all know by now, no such repairs have commenced, because no such repairs are, or ever were, necessary. If that weren’t enough to compel great caution if not outright skepticism regarding RFR’s plans, RFR, displaying utter contempt for both architecture and due process, recently cut into the bronze pillars in Seagram’s lobby to facilitate the hanging of Mr. Rosen’s personal artwork. A capricious and disingenuous owner for whom the end justifies the means, makes for a very dangerous owner.

Mr. Rosen and RFR have demonstrated they will do whatever they want and say whatever it takes to obtain whatever they seek. Which is why this commission is so necessary and vital, and why today’s hearing is of historic importance.

Mr. Rosen has said he wants his successor restaurant to be ‘a really cool place.’ I hope it is, and that Philip Johnson’s original vision plays host to another successful restaurant for the next 56 years. But whatever establishment commences its operations in the future, it is critical that this commission ensures that its owner does not sully or compromise a space that for almost six decades has remained true to itself; true to the original, extraordinary and I pray, enduring vision of Philip Johnson’s great masterpiece.

#LipalaDance: Obama Breaks Out Some Smooth Moves in Kenya

It’s no state secret at this point that, President Barack Obama has some smooth dance moves. (He’s no Michelle, but he CAN groove) He put those moves to the test during two-day trip to Kenya when he performed the Lipala Saturday night at Nairobi’s State House. The Lipala is a traditional dance that had a makeover this year when a popular Kenyan band, Sauti Sol made it a hit as a response to South Korea’s Gangnam Style, it seems. The band performed the song live for the visiting president and Obama—along with President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta —joined in too. Watch.

Well, for all the hype and anticipation, I Am Cait does NOT disappoint. The first episode of Caitlyn Jenner‘s eight-part docuseries, which documents her journey as a transgender advocate and her life in-transition, was jam-packed with telling moments:

1. Let’s Face It – Kylie meets Caitlyn over FaceTime

“I don’t want to scare you.”

“You’re not scaring me. You look pretty!” answers Jenner’s 17 year-old daughter, Kylie.

Kylie later gave Caitlyn teal extensions to match her own color.

2. Fearful – Caitlyn fears her transition could tear the family apart

“Even Kylie coming over today – you never know, when they get away from here and they go home they go ‘Oh my god, that is strange. Khloé hasn’t been here. Kourtney hasn’t been here and hasn’t met Caitlyn. Rob. Maybe them not being around is, you know, kind of their way of saying ‘I don’t really agree with this or what.’ ”

But since the episode was filmed, Caitlyn’s children have all rallied around her. They all showed up to watch her receive the Arthur Ashe Award Courage Award at the ESPYs.

3. All Beauties – Caitlyn mentors transgender youth.

Caitlyn pays a visit to the family and friends of a transgender teen who had committed suicide and advised them to…

“hang out with the people that love and respect you.”

Wrapping her arms around the group, she voiced an important message with three little words:

“We’re all beautiful!”

4. 4 AM Doubts – She filmed herself, sans makeup on.

“It’s like, 4:32 in the morning – and I can’t sleep … Am I going to do everything right? Am I going to say the right things? Do I project the right image? My mind’s just spinning with thoughts. I just hope I get it right. I hope I get it right.”

5. Kanye HelpsKimye are there to support

In a preview that aired at the end of the episode, Kim has some words for Caitlyn:

“You look amazing, it’s your time. But you don’t have to bash us [Kardashians] on your way up.”

But all seemed well between Caitlyn and Kim in the episode. Kanye came along and cracked a rare smile, and Caitlyn opened up about his role throughout the transition.

“I love how [Kanye]’s helped Kim come to grips with what’s going on.”

The accompanying feature is powerful. And in addition to the essay by Noreen Malone, New York magazine has individual stories online that focus on each victim’s allegations against Bill Cosby.

So far, 46 women have come forward to accuse Cosby of sexual assault, in some cases, according to a recently unsealed deposition, with the aid of Qualuudes —a powerful sedative that can render a person functionally immobile. But these allegations are by no means new, with some stretching back decades—to a time when the culture of rape in America left victims little recourse but to suffer silently, and in shame. Today, the way we think and talk about rape has evolved, creating a safer space for survivors to feel empowered by speaking up, reclaiming their victimhood. And that’s led us to here. Of the 46 women who have come forward to accuse Cosby, we spoke to 35 of them — “a sorrowful sisterhood” of women united by their dark experiences, steadfast in their resolve to remain silent no more.

UPDATE: According to The Daily Beast, New York magazine’s website went down hours after posting this story. A hacker named ThreatKing said he was responsible for the attack, but claimed that it had nothing to do with the cover story. He told the Daily Dot over Skype.

“Many stupid people at [sic] New York. I have not even seen the cover, LOL.”

Yeah, really LOL, jackass.
