#BornThisDay: Filmmaker, James Whale

james whale best

June 22, 1889James Whale is a great film director, a true artist, & the subject of one of my favorite films, Bill Condon’s Gods & Monsters (1998) featuring Sir Ian McKellen’s masterful performance as Whale. Thinking of Whale this morning on his birthday, I landed on the moment in the film when McKellen’s Whale murmurs about the hunky Brendan Fraser’s “architectural skull.” This, from the man who would design the impressive & imposing head of the Frankenstein monster?

In Gods & Monsters, a geeky young film fan tells the aging Whale: “It’s the horror movies you’ll be remembered for” & despite his gentlemanly English manners, you can see the irritation in McKellen’s eyes. The young fan is correct of course. Whale’s other films, even his definitive version of the great American musical Show Boat (1936), are mostly forgotten in the 21st century, but people still watch Frankenstein (1931) & The Bride Of Frankenstein (1935). The look of the monster: square head, seams, scars & neck bolts, remains one of the greatest visual icons of the 20th century.

Whale was a painter before he was a stage & film director. His keen eye for design is part of what makes his films so memorable. Besides the look of Doctor Frankenstein’s monster, perfectly played by the great Boris Karloff, he also created the hairstyle & elegantly stitched scars of the monster’s Bride played by Elsa Lanchester. Whale had studied the great German expressionist silent horror films that were never widely released in the USA, & from them he took the stark dramatic lighting & impressionistic sets. Along with his art director Charles Hall, Whale created the style now called Universal Studio Gothic: huge dark interiors with enormous doors, imposing staircases & long shadows.

Gods & Monsters considers that a major influence on Whale’s work was his time as a young soldier in the trenches in WW1. The film uses flashbacks of a handsome young man in a foxhole to provide Whale with awful memories of a boyish lover’s death. But experiences in WWI really did the same for the real life Whale. He was in the thick of some of the most intense battles, before ending up in a POW camp, where he began his directing career by producing amateur theatricals.

There is beauty, perversity & humor in Whale’s horror films. His dark, horrid, witty works portends the movies of directors like Brian De Palma, David Lynch, George A. Romero & Tim Burton.

Whale was an openly gay man in Hollywood in the 1930s, not an easy life. While Gods & Monsters is fiction, his actual last lover was his former chauffeur working a gas station operator who had to share Whale with a male nurse. They were a couple for the last 5 years of Whale’s life.

I have read that the Frankenstein films were a way for Whale to give a coded clue to his sexuality & his feelings of being a misunderstood outsider. Gods & Monsters shows this with an understated intelligence & elegance. Whale’s longtime partner David Lewis stated:

“Jimmy was first & foremost an artist, his films represent the work of an artist, not a gay artist, but an artist.”

Whale probably identified with the monster not just because of his gayness, but also because of his standing as a member of a lower-class in Britain.

Whale directed the play Journey’s End (1928) on London’s West End & then on Broadway. He went to Hollywood to direct the film version & stayed there for the rest of his life, most of that time with Lewis, a successful producer of films including Dark Victory (1939) & Raintree County (1957). They were a couple for 23 years, ending their relationship when Whale invited his young chauffer to live with them. Lewis bought his own cottage nearby & remained close to the director, helping care for him to the end.

Of course, Whale will always most noted for the horror films, along with the Frankenstein flicks there is The Old Dark House (1932) & The Invisible Man (1933), but he became increasingly disenchanted with his association with horror & never returned to the genre.

Having experienced WW1 close-up, Whale seemed an inspired choice to direct The Road Back (1937), a sequel to All Quiet On The Western, but the film was a critical & commercial failure.

A string of failures followed & by 1941 his film directing career was over. Whale continued to direct for the stage & also returned to his love for painting. He had invested wisely & he lived a comfortable life in Hollywood until he suffered a series of strokes in 1956 that left him frail & in misery.

Despondent, lonely, in intense physical pain, Whale drowned himself in his backyard swimming pool in May 1957. Ironically, Whale never swam in the pool, building it after Lewis had a pool installed at his own home. Whale maintained it as a spot for hosting swimming parties for young guys.

Lewis, close to his own passing in 1987, revealed the details of Whale’s suicide note:

“To All I Love,

Do not grieve for me. My nerves are all shot & for the last year I have been in agony day & night, except when I sleep with sleeping pills, & any peace I have by day is when I am drugged by pills.

I have had a wonderful life but it is over & my nerves get worse & I am afraid they will have to take me away. So please forgive me, all those I love & may God forgive me too, but I cannot bear the agony & it is best for everyone this way.

The future is just old age & illness & pain. Goodbye & thank you for all your love. I must have peace & this is the only way.

Jimmy”

My friend Christopher Bram, the author of the original novel Gods & Monsters, has a terrific chapter about writing book & the making of the film version in his terrific memoir Mapping The Territory (2009). I recommend this highly entertaining, emotionally involving book to anyone that is interested in the process of writing.

The countdown has begun and this week was off to a roaring start. Last night President Barack Obama made his final appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and decreed that he couldn’t leave the show.

“I can’t believe you’re leaving before me. In fact, I’m issuing a new executive order that Jon Stewart cannot leave the show. It’s being challenged in the courts.”

They talked the Iran arms deal too, among other things. Obama also joked about Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump‘s unexpected rise to the top of the crappy field of GOP candidates;

“I’m sure the Republicans are enjoying Mr. Trump’s dominance.”

Stewart agreed…

“Anything that makes them look less crazy.”

In case you missed Stewarts epic Dump Trump rant on Monday, here’s that too. You can see the full episode here. Watch.

uber-eats-new-york-los-angeles-denver-spain-chicago

Uber has revolutionized the car service industry, no doubt about it. (They are in a war with Mayor DeBlasio at the moment about his restrictions on them, so much so that they are advertising heavily and there is an area on the app called “DeBlasio” to email your protest!) Nevertheless, with UberEATS, they are threatening to do the same with food delivery. Here’s how they sell it on their website;

“UberEATS delivers the best of New York City right when you want it. Our curated menu features dishes from the local spots you love. And the ones you’ve always wanted to try. It’s the same cashless payment as an Uber ride. So just tap the app, meet your driver outside, and enjoy.”

My place in New York has a street entrance, so it’s pretty easy, even in gross weather, to get a car to my door. Now with the touch of an app, my lazy ass could order lunch –that is IF I was inside their delivery zone, right now it’s between 14th & 59th street, which focuses on midtown offices. (Not sure how convenient it is in midtown to meet a car on the street if you are in a 32 story building, but I have a feeling a LOT of assistants will be finding out.) You can check out the menu here, if you are in the few select cities of Barcelona, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago & Toronto. As you can see from the pricing that it’s not really that expensive –unless they begin to adopt “surge pricing” for the lunch rush.

But how does this work, it seems impossible. The trick is, rather than waiting for customers to place an order, waiting for the restaurant to make the food, and then battling traffic to deliver the order —a process that can easily take 45 minutes— Uber drivers pick up batches of orders from participating restaurants in temperature controlled bags. Then they drive around as they always do, waiting to make a delivery to the nearest willing customer.

Below are the real meals for New York City, today, Thursday and Friday. That ice cream looks delish. Wait!? –ICE CREAM delivery in midtown Manhattan on a Friday afternoon? Do all the drivers have ice chests in their trunks? If not, I’m picturing lots of crying assistants with melted treats… (Hey L.A. pals & World of Wonder buddies in particular –Uber is delivering ice cream goodies on Friday in Los Angeles too! Order some and take a picture when it arrives. I’m curious.)

The members of the Canadian men’s quad and eights (rowing) were on display when they won the gold medals at the Pan-Am Games in Toronto. It’s what you get when you combine tight spandex with revealing red. At the 2012 Olympics, assistant rowing coach at the University of Michigan Charley Sullivan detailed the issue. This has been an issue in the past and at the 2012 Olympics, assistant rowing coach at the University of Michigan, Charley Sullivan, talked about the chronic problem:

“You see, if you choose to row, and you have a penis and a testicle or two, said equipment will inevitably be on full display. … This is a major piece of education that we do with our guys about two days before their first fall regatta, about the same time we give them their first pair of rowing shorts, or “trou” as we call them, short for trousers.

Trou are made of spandex. They’re tight enough to not get caught in the rolling mechanisms of the boat’s seats, and just loose enough to let you move well. Although you can wear underwear under them, it’s not particularly comfortable, it can get in the way, and really, there’s no need, so most male rowers I know go commando. Furthermore, many young men also shave their testicles; less hair to get caught in the moving parts. (This particular bit of knowledge is also often passed down by older guys on the team, not by the coaches. We draw a line somewhere.)

In any case, guys who row need to grow a pair and put on a pair, and to show off what they’ve got. Like swimmers and their Speedos, it’s territory that comes with the sport.”

OK. Guess that makes sense. Win or lose, it seems photos like this are likely to show up again and again. We’re OK with that.

Three big U.S. companies, Apple, Dow Chemical, and Levi Strauss, are getting behind a bill being introduced in Congress today that provides blanket LGBT protections across the country, in housing, employment, workplaces, schools, and public accommodations. Dow said in a statement to BuzzFeed News;

“Full inclusion of our LGBT colleagues and citizens is quite simply the right thing to do — for business and for society. Dow applauds the introduction of The Equality Act and continues to support a comprehensive federal framework that ensures fairness and opportunity for everyone.”

In Arkansas, lawmakers passed the Commerce Improvement Act this year that negates all local laws that protect LGBT people from discrimination. The Equality Act would effectively eliminate a hodgepodge of local nondiscrimination laws that exists across the U.S., by making nondiscrimination a uniform policy nationwide.

Levi’s said the Equality Act is

“both the right thing to do and simply good business.”

We have a long history of supporting LGBT equality, and the time has come in this country for full, federal equality for the LGBT community.”

Apple is run by openly gay CEO Tim Cook and is another of the three companies with a perfect score in HRC’s index of LGBT friendly companies.

“At Apple we believe in equal treatment for everyone, regardless of where they come from, what they look like, how they worship or who they love. We fully support the expansion of legal protections as a matter of basic human dignity.”

The bill will be presented today with supporters at noon today at a press conference at the Capitol. (via BuzzFeed News)

The ex Good Times star was out in L.A. when a photog asked him about the Cosby scandal. Walker admited he was surprised to hear Cosby used Quaaludes and other drugs on women, but claims he witnessed Cosby hooking up all the time. Walker, worked with Cosby on a film and the comedy circuit. Sad but it seems like Cosby has been relegated to being the “O.J. Simpson of comedy” now that everyone is piling on. (via TMZ)

Matt Buck walked alongside a Klan rally with his sousaphone last Saturday, farting out a slow version of Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries as a group of KKK members made their to the South Carolina State House. His protest only lasted a couple of minutes but that 90-second clip,taken by a stranger, is over 4.5 million views. He told the Daily Beast;

“We got really lucky. We parked a few blocks away. Nobody knew where they were gonna be. Sure enough, we got out and there they were. That first little ditty was a little marching baseline. It’s a very lethargic one that they used to use in old Looney Tunes cartoons. It got really popular in Family Guy, when Stewie quits his day job to start following a fat guy around all day long while playing it.

Then there’s Wagner’s ‘Ride of the Valkyries.’ In movies, it’s used as sort of a ride of the bad guys. In Blues Brothers, they use it to make fun of the Nazis. So I thought it’d be fun to make fun of the KKK the way they did with the Nazis in the movies.

…there were a lot of counter-protesters there, and now all the counter protestors were moving around me,” he says. “It eased some tensions, if anything.”

I think some of the Klan members got it. And then there were some of them that really didn’t understand what I was doing.

If this becomes a thing whenever somebody does something stupid in public, then I’m all for it. Far too often, people get away with being idiots. And it’s a little easier to play notes to stop them than to form sentences.

At the end of the day, I was just at the right place at the right time with a sousaphone.”

…and how many of us can say that!? Watch.

Fascinating video testimonials from hustlers, escorts, and rentboys –  shot in the sun-dappled, sienna-filtered look of a Cialis commercial – showing them to be self-empowered, and sex-positive… Just regular folk like you and me. About as different from the seminal WOW documentary 101 Rentboys as you can get, but maybe times are different? Maybe taking them off the streets and putting them on the internet has given the world a different class of hustler? I don’t know, but they sure seem like nice guys. I think I’ll rent one today!

Meet Kurtis Wolfe of Austin, Texas. Kustis is a pornstar, entrepreneur, rentboy, and winner of Best Body at The 2015 Hookies International Escort Awards. Says Kurtis:

I got involved in escorting because a lot of folks have seen me in my scenes and asked me how can I hire you? How can I meet you? And I thought to myself: This is one aspect to make myself more accessible. The thing I love most about my job I’ve traveled to so many different places that I wouldn’t even imagine going to. I truly love what I do. I’m very attentive. I’m very accessable. And I give people the personal attention that keeps them coming back for more and more. It’s that personal connection that’s developed

Viktor Belmont of San Francisco, winner of Best Newcomer at The 2015 Hookies Awards and the first ever transman Hookies winner. He says

“I feel like I have one of the most important jobs in the world. I’m a really needed caretaker and I get to hold people and I get to make them feel loved. I think a lot of people don’t really understand my line of work. Rentboys actually have the biggest hearts in the world. I get to scratch that itch that’s really, really primal, that I feel is so often just swept under the rug. I can satisfy someone in a way that’s incredibly life-affirming. I’m REALLY GOOD AT WHAT I DO.”

Drilla is is a porn star and rentboy based in New York City. He was nominated “Best Cock” at The Hookies 2015 International Escort Awards.

I love what I do because it serves as a tool for me to be able to accomplish many things. I don’t have a badge or a name-tag that says that I work for such-and-such. I work for myself. I make my own hours. I have the time, the free time, to be able to do anything I would actually want to do in life. It’s a blessing to be able to be around somebody who is different from the norm. I’m going to learn a lot from being able to be exposed to so many different people. That’s the stuff you can’t put a dollar amount on. It’s not about me putting my face on an ad and throwing my dick all around the internet. There’s more to life than that. Authenticity and masculinity. I defy being categorized. A lot of people would look at me and be like yeah that’s my type of man because they like the bad boy image. This is really who I am.  I’m somebody who you can see really comes from the hood or the street. But there’s really much more to me than that. I’ve been able to turn a hustle into a brand. I love my job.

#BornThisDay: Filmmaker, Gus Van Sant

gus

July 24, 1952- Gus Van Sant‘s own words for Matt Dillon as Bob in Drugstore Cowboy:

“Fate sucks. I swear. “

In spring 1989, if I had been somewhat clairvoyant while on the set of the film Drugstore Cowboy I would have realized that in the 21st century I would be living in Portland, Oregon, in fact, in a house just a mile from where we were filming. I most likely would have dismissed the entire notion as too much caffeine & candy from crafts services. I loved living in Seattle for a decade, I had the best agent in town & would never have dreamed of leaving.

I had been fortunate enough to have found acting work on TV series & a whole lot of commercials & voice-overs, but the Gus Van Sant project was my first role feature film. I was thrilled to be working with the talented director of Mala Noche, a film I really admired & that had received an enthusiastic reception at The Seattle Film Festival in 1985. I was working in a feature film! My scenes were with dreamy Matt Dillon!

I have now done 12 films, but this one will always be something special. The very soft spoken Van Sant creates an extremely creative atmosphere for working. Many of the actors that have done films with Van Sant have remarked on how great he is to work with & how conducive to creativity the conditions are on the set of his films. He was not big on rehearsing, but he would ask for something completely different out of each take. Dillon (who I have worked with twice) was such a nice gentleman. He would stay & read his lines back to me for our reverse shots. Dillon was a real “regular” guy. He would eat lunch, sitting at a big long table, with the rest of the cast, crew & grips & he spent very little time in his trailer. The rest of the cast were fun & friendly: Kelly Lynch, James LeGros, Anthony George Catalano & Heather Graham. I did not get to meet fellow cast-member William S. Burroughs, my only regret from this experience.

I was invited to the premiere of Drugstore Cowboy, but did not attend because I was performing in a play at the time & the event was in Berlin. The film went on to receive rave reviews. It won 1990 Independent Spirit Awards for Best Screenplay for Van Sant & Daniel Yost, plus Best Cinematography, Best Actor for Dillon, & Best Supporting Actor for Max Perlich. It won Best Screenplay awards from the LA Film Critics Association, the National Society Of Film Critics & the NY Film Critics Circle, & Best Film at the Berlin International Film Festival. At the film’s Seattle premiere, The Husband turned to me half-way through the viewing & stated:

 “Oh. My. God. Stephen, you are in a really GOOD movie!”

Van Sant’s other films have ranged from Oscar winning studio fare: Good Will Hunting (1997) & Finding Forrester (2000) to very experimental: Gerry (2002) & Last Days (2005); Indies: Elephant (2003) & Paranoid Park (2007); noble, brave & baffling experiments: the shot by shot re-make of Psycho (1998) & Even Cowgirls Get The Blues (1993). He has directed 4 films that I love a bunch & which I award an A on The Steve Report Card: Drugstore Cowboy (of course), My Own Private Idaho (1991) To Die For (1995), & Milk (2008).

In 2002, shortly after relocating to Portland after 20 years in Seattle, I was standing with some dear former neighbors from Seattle on a street in the Portland’s Peal District. My friend Susan uttered: “Oh my God, look! That is Gus Van Sant!” The Husband replied: “Yeah, he lives in this neighborhood. Stephen knows him”. Our little group mumbled some: “yeah, sure & uh-huhs”. As Van Sant walked past us, he looked up, & said in his singular soft manner:

“Hello… there… Stephen. I haven’t seen you in a while… strange… your head looks bigger…”

& then he went on his way. My friends looked baffled & everyone wanted to know what he meant. I had no idea (what could he have meant?), but I told them that it was an industry term, that good screen actors had heads that were proportionately too large for their bodies. It was my Gus Van Sant moment.

Van Sant is a Portland resident. Besides directing & writing films of all kinds, he is an author, musician, occasional actor, photographer & painter of considerable skill. He has always been openly gay. Portland is quite the town. Other queer artists who live here include: filmmaker Todd Haynes, k.d.lang, writer Chuck Palahniuk, Courtney Love, musician Logan Lynn, Author Tom Spanbauer & Carrie Brownstein. But, Van Sant is our Andy Warhol.

A few years later, I again accidentally met up with Van Sant on a Portland sidewalk. I was surprised that he would remember me by name, but he called out to me. He is not much for idle chatter, but trying to act nonchalant, I did ask what project he was working on & he did inquire as to my well-being. When he discovered that I resided in Portland, he emphatically stated that he wished that I had read for his film Elephant, that there had been a role that I would have been particularly well-suited. I shrugged & said that my new Portland agent had neglected to sent me out for the audition. Van Sant:

“That makes me sad, Stephen. I thought of you as I was writing that role. You would have brought a lot to the part. I wish we had known you were in town. Darn.”

I left the twice Oscar nominated director on the sidewalk, walked straight to the agent’s office, yelled at her while I was in tears, quit the agency, & walked away from show business.

Upper Manhattan got a surprise visitor yesterday when a crocodile was spotted casually walking down the street. Police at the 34th Precinct tweeted;

“So this alligator was crossing 9th Avenue in Inwood . . . no, really.”

Apparently, at first, there was some confusion over whether it was a crocodile or alligator, but that was cleared up with the always helpful Twitter. (Glad we got THAT cleared up.) NYPD officers caught up to the croc at 205th Street and took it into custody, turning poor thing over to Animal Care & Control.

The hilarious Margaret Cho has set where she famously impersonates her mother saying;

“Gay like the picnic!”

Well, the weather in New York City has been crazy-beautiful the last few days –just perfect. Perfect for a gay (or straight or bi, or trans) picnic! Yes, NYC offers everything under the sun including custom-catered picnics no matter how you identify. Whatever your budget, they’ve got an option. You can do the CLASSIC picnic for $35, the GOLD option for $350 or the ULTIMATE for $1000 –there are lots of options in between too. (They have a spot in Central Park, where you can pick up your to-go picnic, too.) If you think about it, planning a picnic is fun but it can be a HUGE time-consuming hassle; planning the menu, shopping, making the food, finding all of the gear, packing, schlepping it to the spot, cleaning up after, dragging the remains home, etc. But if you want to say, pop THE question, let somebody else do all that, and all you have to do is show up! Perfect Picnic will even provide a photographer to shoot the event at a safe distance, paparazzi-style, to preserve your privacy. I love this idea. It’s a “weather permitting” situation, so last-minute planning might be just fine. Check out all their options here and file this away under “Good Ideas”. (The Margaret Cho “gay picnic” moment comes at about 2:30. Watch.)

This video was originally posted four years ago, but 4 million views later (30 of those must be mine) and it’s still funky fresh! A 14 year-old girl decides to make a video lip-synching to Akon‘s Smack That but what she didn’t realize was that her little brother, Beau, (who was just 12 at the time but looks much younger) was killing it video bombing her and mocking her every move. It’s a classic. See it again for the first time. Watch.

Lyle XOX is one of those Kitchen Sink Queens – as in, she literally wears everything and the kitchen sink when she gets up in drag, god bless her. You name it: toothpicks, bottles of Tide, old TV antennas, lightbulbs, baseball gloves, dental impressions… If it’s lying around the house, it’s going to end up on her head. The results are hilarious, thought-provoking, and frequently touch upon something magical. As endlessly innovative as her drag is, though, it’s the micro-stories she tells in the Instagram descriptions that really push it all into GENIUS territory. To say they are surreal undersells them. They are some of the nuttiest free associations you will find on the internet. Check out some of my favorite looks below, then check out (and FOLLOW) her Instagram page here, where there are HUNDREDS more to see.
