Christopher Russell, “Bees for Sunset Park”, a permanent sculpture installation commissioned by MTA Arts & Design, 2009

New York Magazine‘s Wendy Goodman, on a tip from gallerist Julie Saul, just shot Christopher Russell‘s rooftop escape, just one flight up from their Meatpacking District loft. A ceramic sculptor, Christopher and his wife, Gina, bought their apartment when there was still meat in the area.

“It was around 1990 and the neighborhood was very different, very quiet and out of the way.”

The old interior was, as Russell describes, “high tech” with “lots of gray and Formica.” After years of changes and renovations, the 70-square-foot rooftop room designed by sculptor-woodworker, Jeff Benjamin, has built-ins and rift white-oak-veneer plywood paneling, and feels much like a ship’s cabin. Russell says about the space;

“We talked to Jeff about what we imagined doing there. We wanted it to be the country house you didn’t have to drive to or keep snow-plowed. We fantasized a lot about long winter afternoons watching mystery shows together.”

The tiny structure was already on the roof when the Russells bought the space, but it was a standard Home Depot affair surrounded by a tar roof. It has since been transformed, as has the garden just outside the new door and windows.

If you’ve lived in Manhattan for a while, like I have, you may have noticed it on a rooftop at the corner of East 13th and Third Avenue. The beach house-style cottages are the penthouses of a prewar building have intrigued New Yorkers for years. Now, one of them is up for sale, so we get a peek inside. The three-bedroom, three-bathroom duplex has lots of exposed brick, two wood-burning fireplaces (one outside) and not one but TWO terraces. It ain’t exactly cheap at $4.44 million, but given what you get in this city for several mill these days, it IS a rare opportunity. And really, if you want a place that functions as a NYC apartment AND a weekend getaway, this your jam.

#BornThisDay: Alexander The Great

alexander t great

 July 20, 355 BCAlexander III of Macedonia is probably the most important figure in Western History outside of superstar Jesus Christ. He gave the world the gift of philosophy of the Greeks & their culture (if you get my meaning) in the 4th century BC. Alexander took an army into Central Asia & then on to India. He conquered 90% of the known world & forged an empire stretching from Greece to India by the time of his early death. Alexander promoted a policy of Hellenization throughout the Mediterranean & all the way to Western Asia. In a crazy coincidence, my screen-name on Daddyhunt.com is Hellenization69!

The most important emotional relationship of Alexander’s life was with his BFF, army general & bodyguard Hephaestion, the son of a Macedonian noble & a major hottie. Hephaestion’s early death devastated Alexander, sending him into an extended period of grieving, which eventually contributed to his failing health & nutty behavior during his final months.

Alexander was a real drama queen with an impulsive nature that contributed to some of the dubious decisions during his short life. That bitter old queen Plutarch thought that this part of Alexander’s conflicted personality was the cause of his weakness for cocktails. He was known to frequent happy hour at leather bars throughout the world (which during his era was smaller & flat). Alexander was stubborn & did not respond well to being ordered around, a situation that I understand all too well. Along with his fiery temperament, there was a serene side to Alexander; perceptive, logical, & calculating. He had a great thirst for knowledge & a love for philosophy. Alexander was a big fan of Lady Gaga Of Sparta, Greek Musical Comedies & an avid reader.

Alexander was noted for being extremely handsome. Many portraits of him were made during his lifetime. It was recorded that he had a very pleasant body odor & breath, which for the times must have been remarkable… if you know what I mean. He was a major gym bunny who loved strenuous exercise & would often hit the gym or work with his private Pilates instructor Bruno The Big. Alexander was able to jump off & then back on a chariot moving at full speed. His BF, Hephaestion, was taller & even more handsome; you know that kind of power couple. The Persian Queen bowed to Hephaiestion instead of Alexander when she was presented to them. Alexander said to the mortified queen:

“Never mind, Mother, Hephaestion is also Alexander.”

Unfortunately, Hephaestion & Alexander were never able to enjoy their house in The Pines & because they were so busy conquering the World that they were rarely able to use their co-op in the West Village section of Athens or the time-share in Ibiza. Sometimes, instead of taking over the world, wouldn’t the just have liked to enjoy their place in the city?

Like Portland & other urban hipster centers in the 21st century, sexual attraction between men was considered normal in Alexander’s time. Men of culture & education like Alexander loved beauty & there was beauty to be ransacked all over the world. Alexander:

“Sex & sleep alone make me conscious that I am mortal.”

Shortly before beginning of a planned total domination of Arabian men, Alexander became ill after attending a brunch at his friend, the hunky Medius Of Larisa’s swank townhouse in downtown Babylon, which had previously been owned by male-model Achilles. He developed a fever, probably from imbibing unfiltered brandy drink named in his honor, & the following day he was unable to move or speak. His Macedonians fans were allowed to file past Alexander one final time before he bit the big one in June, 323 BC, or as the Macedonians called it, the month of Daesius. Alexander T. Great, the might Macedonian king, star of his own reality series, & the great conqueror of Persian Empire, was gone at just 33 years old & without leaving an heir to his fortune or a successor to lead the Empire.

Alexander T. Great’s remains were sent to Egypt where he liked to spend his winters. His tomb was one of the biggest tourist attractions of the ancient world. His epitaph read:

“A tomb now suffices him for whom the world was not enough.”

Roman Emperors Pompey, Julius Caesar, & the always charming Caligula, traveled all the way to Alexandria to pay their homage. Augustus was so overwhelmed during his visit that he accidentally broke the nose off Alexander’s mummy while laying a wreath.

Had he made it, Alexander would have celebrated his 2370 birthday today.

NBC made history Saturday night, as Thomas Roberts took to chair the at NBC Nightly News as the first out gay anchor of an evening news program on a major network. This is a huge milestone for both the 42-year-old journalist’s career and gay rights history. Until the broadcast, an openly gay person had never anchored the nightly news on network TV. Roberts told The Advocate that it was a “huge honor” to fill the role.

Roberts came out long ago, in 2006. He recently dropped out as host of the Miss USA pageant following the controversial comments made by owner Donald Trump. Ironically, during the night’s broadcast, Roberts’ lead story was about Trump, who just insulted the war record of Senator John McCain.

There are a few openly gay evening news anchors on cable –MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon– but Roberts is the first for one of the big three networks. Speaking to the Advocate, Roberts simply said it was a “huge honor” to be selected as the anchor for NBC.

#Legacy: As New Details Emerge, “Cosby Show” Actor, Joseph C. Phillips, Weighs In on His Former Idol

The New York Times has obtained a nearly 1,000-page full-transcript of Bill Cosby‘s 2005 deposition, in which he was questioned in the case of a woman who accused him of drugging and molesting her. The details paint Cosby further into a corner, if you look at the details. The comedian, who has been married since 1964, testified that he repeatedly engaged with the women he pursued, inviting them to dinners alone and meeting up for a “rendezvous”, which allegedly ended with many of the women being drugged, and left in various states of undress. This “calculated pursuit” of women conflicts with the persona on which Bill Cosby has built a lifelong career — that of a wholesome father figure, once immortalized in the character he played on his now tainted 80s TV sitcom.

Yesterday on CBS Sunday Morning, actor Joseph C. Phillips, who appeared on The Cosby Show, gave his very blunt opinion on the man who was an idol to him, until the recent revelations. It’s only one man’s opinion, but he makes some points that we are all dealing with, regardless of our opinion on the matter. As he says, “It’s a difficult balancing act to be certain. It may be that none of us has the moral equilibrium to pull it off.”

Watch.

“Legendary basketball coach John Wooden was often quoted speaking about the importance of character. ‘Be more concerned with your character,’ Wooden said, ‘because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.’

When we idolize men based on their reputations, we open ourselves up for disappointment when their character flaws are exposed.

It’s nothing new; it happens all the time. We love a ballplayer because of his feats on the field and then we discover that he gambled on games. We admire a president, and then discover that he is a chronic liar and a cheat. We work for America’s Dad, and then he is accused of being a serial rapist.

If the allegations against Bill Cosby are true, which I believe them to be, then Bill Cosby is a man with a tremendously flawed character who enjoyed a stellar reputation.

But Bill Cosby is also more than that, isn’t he? In spite of his flawed character, Bill Cosby was a brilliant comic and actor, a philanthropist, a patron of the fine arts, a teacher, a man concerned with educating children, a warrior for civil rights. The good works that bolstered his reputation created a legacy, the Bill Cosby legacy.

So if a man nurtures his reputation by doing public good, what becomes of those works when his true character is revealed, and he suffers the inevitable fall from grace?

Do we simply discard a man’s brilliance, his philanthropy, his wisdom and humanitarianism? How much of that legacy are we allowed to celebrate?

For some, the answer is zero. The gravity of his acts demands that his legacy be tossed into the trash bin of history.

For others, the value of his works outweighs his character flaws. His legacy is paramount and must be jealously guarded.

And still for others, like myself, there is a struggle to reconcile the dissonance — an attempt to condemn the behavior on one hand, while preserving what was good and of value on the other. It’s a difficult balancing act to be certain. It may be that none of us has the moral equilibrium to pull it off.

Behaviors carry consequences! Watching your legacy crumble before your eyes is clearly one consequence. Civil or legal consequences may follow.

But the one thing for certain is that the Cosby legacy will be determined by the character Bill Cosby demonstrates now, in this moment. His reputation no longer matters.”

“every day, day and night.”

The man’s identity is not known and the investigation is ongoing.

UPDATE: Demi Moore said yesterday that she was “in absolute shock” at the death of a man who drowned in the swimming pool of her Beverly Hills home. L.A. County coroner’s Lt. Fred Corral told KTTV that Edenilson Steven Valle, 21, was pulled from the pool’s deep end, where he was found floating after being in the water an estimated 10-15 minutes. He was pronounced dead at approximately 5:30AM local time Sunday.

Moore, 52, said in the statement released through her publicist;

“I was out of the country traveling to meet my daughters for a birthday celebration when I got the devastating news.”

She added that the death, which occurred at a party held by her assistant in her absence, was an

“unthinkable tragedy, and my heart goes out to this young man’s family and friends.”

Corral said that Valle’s family and friends had told investigators that the victim did not know how to swim. Valle appeared to have slipped and fallen into the pool and no foul play was involved. (via Daily Mail; Fox News)

#FunnyorDie: Trump’s New Slogan “Lick My Dong, America. I’m Rich and You’re Not.” Sends Polls Higher!

I’m sure you’ve heard that blowhard/POTUS candidate Donald Trump insulted Senator John McCain. Trump said he does not owe McCain an apology for saying he’s only a war hero “because he was captured.” According to Mr. Charming, he left to a “standing ovation” after dishing out that gem at the Family Leadership Council summit.

And once again, he’s up in the polls! So, given that America seems to LOVE his “take no prisoners” approach to campaigning, it makes you wonder what he’ll say next to endear himself to the U.S. of fuckin’ A!. Well, Funny or Die‘s Adam McKay is on it already with this Exclusive Report on Trump’s news plans for capturing America’s heartland:

After insulting all Mexican immigrants as “rapists” and claiming POWs aren’t heroes because “they got captured” and seeing his poll numbers go up, Donald Trump put his sometimes-abrasive campaign into fifth gear Monday morning.

While speaking at an event in midtown Manhattan for the Iowa primary he called a nun, Sister Anne Discordia, a “no good cunt” and then threw a cue ball, which for some reason he had in his pocket, at an infant. The infant suffered bruises but is in good condition. Sister Dacordia called the incident “traumatizing” but, because it was Donald Trump, “in no way surprising.”

People booed and hissed Trump after the incidents but at one point someone yelled, “Hey, he’s no-nonsense and isn’t playing by the rules.” The booing then slowly turned to applause and Trump’s poll numbers are now higher than ever.

An anonymous source inside the Trump campaign says this is just the beginning.

“We’re planning for Trump to go to a hospice and tell everyone to ‘pick up the pace and die already!’ Then we’ll take Trump to a little league baseball game where he will get drunk and make a buzzer sound after every child swings and misses.

“We’re also excited about Mr. Trump’s upcoming appearance at a homeless shelter where Trump will throw $100 bills into a blender and call a lot of people losers and dummies.”

Trump’s new slogan “Lick my Dong America. I’m rich and you’re not” is a reflection of the aggressive tone the New York businessman’s campaign has struck of late.

Some insiders are predicting Ann Coulter could be named Trump’s running mate. “The Trump campaign needs to keep getting more and more disgusting to appeal to the Republican base. And who’s more offensive and disgusting than Ann Coulter?” said Ann Coulter from her undisclosed lair.

Takei
CNN‘s Dana Bash asked Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker, in a weekend interview whether the Boy Scouts should allow gay troop leaders;

“Do you think being gay is a choice?”

“I don’t have an opinion on every single issue out there. To me, that’s, I don’t know. I don’t know the answer to that question.”

The Wisconsin governor said he supports the current ban that keeps openly gay leaders out of the organization but that he believes the Boy Scouts, not the government, should decide that kind of policy.

On whether being gay is a choice or not, Walker said that’s “not even an issue for me to be involved in.”

George Takei suggested on Facebook that perhaps Walker might want to choose to be gay, just as an experiment…

“To show how chooseable one’s sexual orientation is, I suggest he turn gay for a month. Or even just a week. You know, to give us gays some hope that we can change our orientations, too.

Being gay or straight isn’t a choice. But remaining ignorant is.”

#LGBT: Sorry, Bianca –Only Trans Drag Is Welcome at Glasgow’s “Free Pride”

Yes, Free Pride Glasgow, which was organized as an “anti-commercialist” alternative to Pride Glasgow‘s main event – decided ahead of the event next month, claiming that despite drag being a uniquely celebrated part of most Pride, they would not be welcome to perform at Free Pride. A statement from the group says;

“After much discussion, the trans and non binary caucus decided not to have drag acts perform at the event.

This does not mean that people of any gender can’t wear what they want to the event, we simply won’t be having any self-described drag acts perform at our Free Pride Event on the 22nd August. We hope people can understand and support our decision. However we feel it important to fully explain why we came this decision.

The decision was taken by transgender individuals who were uncomfortable with having drag performances at the event. It was felt that it would make some of those who were transgender or questioning their gender uncomfortable.

It was felt by the group within the Trans/Non Binary Caucus that some drag performance, particularly cis drag, hinges on the social view of gender and making it into a joke, however transgender individuals do not feel as though their gender identity is a joke.

This can particularly difficult for those who are not out and still present as the gender they were assigned at birth. While it was discussed whether we could have trans drag acts perform, it was agreed that as it would not be appropriate to ask any prospective drag acts whether or not they identified as trans.

It was therefore decided that having no drag acts perform would be the best option as it would mean no-one would feel pressured to out themselves.”

In a response to the group’s creation, Pride Glasgow said:

“We can understand the actions behind Free Pride over the banning of Drag Performers but believe this to action to wrong and going against what an inclusive event should be about.

As an organisation Pride Glasgow had a similar discussion back in 2010 over how Drag could cause discomfort to people however we took the decision that Drag Queens and Kings play an important part in the history of the Pride movement and should be included within the event, so we used our Pride Guide to address these concerns by having a statement from Crosslynx (a Trans support organisation at the time) explaining that not everyone people would see in Drag at Pride would be Trans or represent the trans community.

Pride Glasgow believes that any community group should be given their place to flourish but that success should not be built on the negativity and ignorance towards other events, groups and like minded people and we are saddened to see that this is the direction that Free Pride has chosen to take.”

The National Union of Students previously voted on a motion to enforce a “zero tolerance” approach to drag and cross-dressing at all student union events. It claimed in part:

“Transphobic fancy dress should be met with the same disdain with which we meet other prejudiced or appropriative costumes.

Conference resolves to issue a statement condemning the use of ‘cross-dressing’ as a mode of fancy dress.

Conference resolves amend the NUS Zero Tolerance Statement policy to cover all NUS events and conferences; and to encourage Unions to ban clubs and societies from holding events which permit or encourage (cisgender) members to use ‘cross-dressing’ as a mode of fancy dress.”

People on social media were quick to disagree. Sound off on what you think on our Facebook page. (via Pink News)

The Scream by Edvard Munch – one of the most disturbing paintings of all time – is brought to life by Sebastian Cosor of Safe Frame, and thrillingly set to the song The Great Gig In The Sky by Pink Floyd. Must-see! must-see! must-see! And you must see it all the way through!

Wrote Edvard Munch in 1893:

I was walking along a path with two friends – the sun was setting – suddenly the sky turned blood red – I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence – there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city – my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety – and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature.

It literally guts me to read that. I can’t breathe. I FEEL his anxiety. Watch the video below, and then just spend a minute or two gazing at the picture, wondering at its power.

#BornThisDay: Poet, Hart Crane

crane

July 2, 1899Hart Crane was born & raised in Ohio. His father was the inventor of Life Savers Candy & his mother was overbearing, flashy, & a hypochondriac. The parents drank, fought bitterly & eventually divorced. The unhappy childhood provided the perfect set-up for a young poet’s successful writing career.

Crane began writing verse as a young teenager, & although he basically self-educated he read the works of the Elizabethans: Shakespeare, Marlowe, & Donne, & the 19th century French poets: Vildrac, Laforgue, & Rimbaud.

Crane finally had enough of family life & dropped out of high school to move to NYC in 1916. He found work as a copy editor & wrote poems for small literary magazines. He often needed to borrow money from his father to survive.

In NYC, he partied with many important literary stars of the era: Allen Tate, Katherine Anne Porter, e. e. cummings, but his heavy drinking & emotional instability frustrated attempts at lasting friendship. Crane admirered the poems of T. S. Eliot, & his own work combined the influences of the modern European writers with a particularly American sensibility inspired by Walt Whitman.

Like Whitman, Crane lived in Brooklyn. With his lover, Emil Opffer, he shared digs at 110 Columbia Heights in Brooklyn Heights. Crane was crazy for the views the house afforded him. In spring of 1924 he wrote:

“Just imagine looking out your window directly on the East River with nothing intervening between your view of the Statue Of Liberty, way down the harbour, & the marvelous beauty of The Brooklyn Bridge close above you on your right! All of the great new skyscrapers of lower Manhattan are marshaled directly across from you, & there is a constant stream of tugs, liners, sailboats in procession before you on the river! It’s really a magnificent place to live. This section of Brooklyn is very old, but all the houses are in splendid condition & have not been invaded by foreigners.”

The Brooklyn Bridge served as the inspiration for his greatest poem, The Bridge (1930), his own answer to Eliot’s The Waste Land (1922). During his time, the area below the bridge on the Brooklyn side was known notoriously as a place for homos to meet for sex.

As his work was published, some praised his poetry, but most critics scoffed at it. Crane’s poems has often been criticized as incomprehensible; he was certainly that for me when I attempted to get through his collected works in American Poetry 301 in college. Crane was emotionally crushed by the bad reviews his poems received.

Tormented by his attraction to other men, Crane had a rapturous love affair with Opffer, a Danish sailor, the inspiration for the epic, erotic poem Voyages (1926), the center piece of his first book of published poems, White Buildings.

Crane lived a lifetime of profound problems both social & personal. His failed love life was partly due to his obsession with men from the navy. Ernest Hemingway (they share a birthday) noted:

“Poor Hart Crane, always trying to pick up the wrong sailor.”

His own self-image held back Crane from any real happiness, but booze was the major player in his downfall. Under the influence, he would become flirty, frequently found himself in the wrong situations, at the wrong times. Haven’t we all been in that situation on a lonely Saturday night?

Crane was the guest of Harry & Caresse Crosby, the American couple owned the fine arts Black Sun Press, at their home in the French countryside, Le Moulin du Soleil. Crosby wrote:

“Hart Crane back from Marseilles where he slept with 30 sailors & he began again to drink Cutty Sark. Crane got drunk at the Cafe Select & fought with waiters over his tab. When the Paris police were called, he fought with them & was beaten. They arrested & jailed him, fining him 800 francs & spent six days in prison at La Santé.”

Crane made an attempt to clean up his act & play it straight to please the people in his life. He tried, but he was miserable. Drinking & rough-trade made his life bearable & yet, made it worse.

Crane attempted to marry a girl, Peggy Crowley, the recently divorced wife if his good friend, writer & critic Malcolm Crowley, but everyone knew it was all a conceit.

On April 26, 1932, while on board a cruise ship in the Caribbean, Crane was badly beaten by a crew member that he had made a pass at. The following morning, a friend found him in his room, drunk & inconsolable. She told him to dress for lunch & left. Shortly before noon, Crane was seen on the deck, looking down at the water. Crane yelled out: “Goodbye, everybody!” & then he jumped overboard. His body was never recovered. He was just 32 years old.

Tennessee Williams, the most devoted of all the many writers & artists who venerated Crane, left instructions that his own body was to be buried at sea in the Gulf Of Mexico at the very spot that Crane drowned. Instead, William’s family buried him in St. Louis, the city Williams so desperately tried to escape.

Crane’s life story is a troubled tale of a talented gay man trying to find where he belonged in the world. If he had been born a half a century later maybe Crane would have been able to write & publish his poems with some glimmer of happiness.

His poetry confounds me & his life leaves me circumspect.

From Legend, part of White Buildings (1926):

I am not ready for repentance;

Nor to match regrets. For the moth

Bends no more than the still

Imploring flame. & tremorous

In the white falling flakes

Kisses are,

The only worth all granting

#LGBT: Ben Shapiro Files a Police Report Against Trans Reporter Zoey Tur After Their Tense TV Showdown

Breitbart journalist (and noted asshole) Ben Shapiro filed a police report against transgender reporter Zoey Tur after their heated exchange on HLN’s Dr. Drew On Call last week. In the segment, Shapiro tries to derail the discussion about Caitlyn Jenner with a very transphobic stream of consciousness about genetics and “mainstreaming delusions”. The ultra-conservative Shapiro repeatedly referred to both Tur and Jenner as “he”, “him” and “sir”. Asked by host Dr. Drew Pinsky whether Jenner deserved the award after “fighting a new battle” Shapiro asked:

“What exactly is the battle? I mean, self-definition is what you do, and my baby’s doing it at 18 months old. I was unaware that you get a medal for it.”

Tur, a former fighter pilot, was visibly upset by Shapiro’s comments, responded:

“Of course she’s brave. All those years invested as the sports legend, to come out transgender is horribly difficult. It is the most difficult thing you can do.”

Shapiro responded with;

“Facts don’t care about your feelings. It turns out that every chromosome, every cell in Caitlyn Jenner’s body, is male, with the exception of some of his sperm cells.”

He then proceeded to ask Tur,

“What are your genetics, sir?”

A furious Tur grabbed Shapiro by the neck and said;

“You cut that out now, or you’ll go home in an ambulance.”

Shapiro later claimed that Tur threatened to “curb stomp” him after the segment was over. On Sunday morning, Shapiro filed a report of battery against Tur with the LAPD and explained his reasoning to Breitbart;

“Just because the left has designated someone a member of the victim class does not mean that that person gets to infringe the rights of others. Until the left learns that, their aggression will not stop.”

He said that he’ll be pursing any possibility of charges regarding alleged criminal threats. What do you think? Did Tur cross the line with physical threats? Sound off on our Facebook page.

Screen Shot 2015-07-19 at 7.43.09 AMIf you thought you couldn’t love Jon Stewart any more, just wait. As he winds down his 16-year run on The Daily Show, everyone’s wondering what he’ll do next? Stewart and his wife, Tracey McShane, just announced that they bought the farm – literally. The advocacy group Farm Sanctuary said in a release;

“The couple recently bought a farm in New Jersey with the intention of providing a home for farm animals rescued from cruelty, and in November, Tracey purchased an Adopt a Farm Animal sponsorship for all of their Thanksgiving guests. Even their children are living the Farm Sanctuary life, with Tracey saying that “promises of animal shelter visits in exchange for completed homework are the norm in the Stewart household.”

A longtime animal-rights advocate, earlier this month, Stewart interviewed Gene Baur, president and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary, in which Baur discussed his latest book, Living the Farm Sanctuary Life. His wife Tracey is also a big supporter of animal’s rights, with a book on the subject, Do Unto Animals, slated for a fall release. She also runs a magazine, Moomah, that dedicated its most recent issue to living a vegan lifestyle. Tracey says;

“The joy of interacting with animals as friends instead of using them for human consumption is life-changing. A trip to Farm Sanctuary should be on everyone’s to-do list.”

The Stewarts already care for 15 creatures, plus their two children: two fish, two parrots, two guinea pigs, two regular pigs, two horses, four dogs, and a parrot.

“All rescues. Except for the children.”

And in their honor, Farm Sanctuary just named two rescued sheep Jon and Tracey. If we’ve got to lose this guy on a nightly basis, at least it’s with good reason. What a guy! –who apparently married quite a gal too. (via Philly)

#Backstage: How James Lecesne Gives Life To His Characters in “The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey”

I’ve written about my friend James Lecesne‘s new show The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelky here before when it was in a limited run. Now it’s a hit. It’s an adaptation of his “Young Adult” novel Absolute Brightness — a story, full of funny, familiar residents of a small Jersey town and the disappearance of a memorable (apparently gay) teen. These people unravel the story of Leonard, an optimistic and flamboyant 14 year-old boy, whose magic is only truly felt once he is missing. Leonard inspires the town as they question what people leave behind when they are gone. For the this production, James got rid of a few some characters from the book and added some others. He says;

“It has to be varied, to keep people’s interest for 75 minutes. You can’t have too many people in the hair salon, right?”

I do know James outside of the theater (he created the character of Trevor that inspired the LGBT teen suicide hotline The Trevor Project, among other things.) I’ve seen this remarkable show too (it is a GREAT night in the theater, I swear) so it’s fascinating to me how he really BECOMES these people. It’s, of course, on a nearly bare stage, almost completely devoid of props and no costume change or makeup. It’s “Just James” – to coin a phrase. But that makes it more amazing because after the first two minutes, you forget about James and are engrossed in this moving and funny story – and these 9 people, who keep appearing, disappearing and reappearing – like magic.

Peter Hapak shot these great photos (made better by being in black and white) for New York magazine and James told Boris Kachka how he “accesses” these people in his head. The voices and gestures

“to encourage people to think about the uniqueness of each human being.”

The accents and peculiar movements that separate a detective from hairdresser from mob wife. They all come from James’s life. His life in Hasbrouck Heights, summers at the Jersey shore and a part in a play full of Germans…

“I hear them speaking and then I work back.”

If you are in New York, you can see this production. If not, when it tours, I’ll keep you updated. James will be living with these 9 people to tell Leonard’s story as he said to me, “for the next few years”, so if you’re lucky, you might get a chance to meet them –and him– in the flesh. In the meantime, there are these pictures and the insight into how he plays them below. The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey is playing at the Westside Theatre through October 4. Ticket info here.

Chuck DeSantis: "He’s a small-town detective, one of the good guys — my straight alter ego. Chuck’s center of gravity is so different from mine. Mine tends to be forward, but his is more grounded. More pelvic. And very matter-of-fact, so he’s always up front about his presentation. He doesn’t use extraneous gestures.”

Marty Branahan: "Chuck’s cop partner. So New Jersey — a brash kind of working guy that I knew well growing up. He has a very wide stance, which allows me to give the impression of somebody much larger — I try to take up as much space as possible. He has a tendency to flail with his arms, and his head is a little loose on his shoulders.”

Otto Beckerman: "German, early 70s; he runs the local clock shop. I did [Doug Wright’s] I Am My Own Wife, which has 37 characters, more than half German, but I’ve never had a dialect coach — I’m sure it’s all wrong. He’s probably six inches shorter than I am, almost like he’s weighed down by his past. He has a tremor in one hand, which is how I stay in touch with him.”

Ellen Hertle: "Early 40s. She runs the local beauty salon, a small-town Liz Taylor, with something messy about her. I get up on my toes, my way of being in heels — a little unstable. Something I learned from a Kabuki performer who plays women: A woman’s hips are wider than her shoulders, so as a man, you present hips forward, torso slightly tilted to one side.”

Phoebe Hertle: "She’s 16 — a really smart teenager faced with an adult problem. She’s incredibly self-conscious, yet she wants to be seen, so she’s fighting this desire to hide. She has an inner motor that is acting against these exterior gestures of, basically, ‘Oh my God, my hair, my socks.’ She’s always pulling at her socks. Her gestures are literally close to the vest.”

Travis Lembeck: "He’s 19; he’s troubled. He’s playing a video game, and he has longish hair, so he has a tic of whipping it out of his eyes. He tends to talk out of the side of his mouth — a physical manifestation of never telling the exact truth. When he’s standing, he has his hands in his back pockets, like having something behind your back, a secret.”

Buddy Howard: "“He is the leader of the Buddy Howard School of Drama and Dance. He has a posh accent but also a strange, distinctive lisp. So it would be hard to imagine him as a successful actor at home in England, but in New Jersey, he’s found a way. He’s filled with florid physical gestures. Everyone assumes he’s gay, but then he introduces his wife. That’s just his affect.”

Gloria Salzano: “She’s the widow of a mobster — she’s seen a lot of evil. There’s a pursed thing to her mouth, as if she doesn’t want the wrong thing to slip out. She’s lonely, and the binoculars indicate her desire to look outside her life. Her eyes are very wide, and for me that’s the thing about her. I grew up with those women — intuitively smart but intellectually not so much.”

Marion Tochterman: "She’s in her late 60s, lifelong smoker, probably had her heyday back in the ’80s. There’s a trick to doing her rasp so that you don’t destroy your voice, mostly in my facial mask. So much of Marion happens in the lower part of her face. Repositioning my jaw, pushing it a little forward, that creates her kind of old-lady neck.”

Well, Nick Jonas knows how to tease his gay fans and leave them begging for more. He performed at London’s G-A-Y nightclub on Saturday night, literally bound up. For his performance of Chains, the Kingdom star was bound in chains –by drag queens no less– wearing a sleeveless muscle tee, with biceps bulging, and sing his hit, and a bit of Jealous too. Watch.
