Dammit. I really wish I could tell you that Netflix was releasing Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp now for your 4th of July weekend – but the limited 8-episode series comes out on July 31. If this trailer is any indication, you DO have something to look forward to, though. If you thought you’d be seeing what happened to the campers after they were all grown up, think again. Instead, it’s the first day of camp in this prequel series to the 2001 cult classic. Kids, this is THE oldest group of teenagers EVER. At Camp Firewood in WHAS we saw the last day of summer, now we discover the events that made these kids the goof-balls they became. All of the original cast is back –yes, even Bradley Cooper who was reportedly only on set one day. They’re joined by tons of new stars like Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, John Slattery, Weird Al Yankovic and more. Myself, I cannot wait. Watch.

Lawrence with Brynner

July 4, 1898– Gertrude Alice Dagmar Klasen, or as we fans like to call her, Gertrude Lawrence, had hordes of adoring audiences in both Britain & the USA. She was the first true international superstar, a Cockney who conquered adoring audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.

Lawrence’s appeal went far beyond the sophisticated international show biz elite. She lived in the USA for most of her career & toured the country so widely that she became a front-page celebrity from coast to coast. The Gershwins wrote Oh, Kay! (1926) for her, where she was the first to sing Someone To Watch Over Me. Noel Coward wrote one of the greatest comedies of the 20th century, Private Lives (1930), for her & together they created the sparkling characters of Elyot & Amanda. Kurt Weill & Moss Hart wrote Lady In The Dark (1944) for her; Rogers & Hammerstein wrote The King & I (1956) for her, & most theater people agree that Joseph L. Mankiewicz wrote the film All About Eve (1950) about her.

But by the time of her death at just 54 years old, Lawrence had made only a handful of films, now seldom seen, in which the camera failed to capture her special allure. Those of us who never saw her brand of charisma light up a stage are left with only the press clipping & the recordings of her haunting, but precarious singing voice as proof to her greatness.

She was Noel Coward’s BFF for 40 years. Coward, who met her when they first worked together on stage when she was 14 years old, described her face as:

“Far from pretty, but tremendously alive”.

Lawrence was also a lifelong friend & a frequent collaborator with comic genius (& lesbian) Beatrice Lillie.

Without her theatrical make-up, Lawrence was quite plain, probably the reason why her success was on stage & never repeated on screen. When the curtain went up, she possessed that unexplainable “it factor” that transformed her into a glamourous star. Coward:

“Sometimes, in Private Lives, I would look at her across the stage & she would simply take my breath away.”

At their first meeting, Lawrence told the 13 year old Coward a few “mildly dirty stories” & later took him into a bedroom & showed him the ropes. It is very probable that Lawrence was the gay Coward’s only heterosexual experience. Coward denied this vehemently & once told Gore Vidal that he had never had sex with a woman.

Vidal: “Not even with Gertie Lawrence?”

Coward: “Particularly not with Miss Lawrence.”

Lawrence had one short-lived marriage that produced a daughter, but there was a long succession of lovers, male & female, including the married actor/manager Sir Gerald du Maurier. His daughter, novelist Daphne du Maurier, bitterly resented Lawrence’s role in her father’s life because of the distress it caused her mother & had her revenge by becoming another Lawrence’s lover.

Another love affair was with Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Fairbanks:

“She was very temperamental, very jealous, could be exhausting, moody, difficult – but also enchanting & alive & very funny.”

But the most controversial relationship of all was her fling with the Prince Of Wales, the future Edward VIII & later Duke Of Windsor. Their affair infuriated his mother, Queen Mary, who disapproved of Lawrence happily ever after.

At the height of her fame in the 1930s, Lawrence was massively in debt. Her NYC lawyer observed that she spent money “like an entire fleet of drunken sailors”. To the astonishment of her friends, she married the wealthy American impresario & theatre owner, Richard Aldrich.

Coward disliked Aldrich, but sent a telegram with his customary wit:

“Dear Mrs. A,

Hooray Hooray. At last you are deflowered. On this as every other day I love you.

Noel Coward”

Like her other friends, Coward doubted she really loved Aldrich, but the marriage gave her financial security. Lawrence continued to have affairs with members of both sexes while a married lady.

One of her last lovers was Yul Brynner, then 35 years old & married. Brynner was virtually unknown when he was cast in The King & I, with the 52 year old Lawrence’s name above the title & his listed below it.

Throughout rehearsals, there were many complaints from Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein about her singing off-key. She became increasingly temperamental, & the director, the very gay John Van Druten, was not strong enough to handle her.

As you well know, Brynner exuded real masculine authority & tremendous sexual heat. When he spoke, Lawrence listened. The director would give notes to Lawrence via Brynner. Partly because of his influence, The King & I  received raves & became a hit. But the complaints about Lawrence’s singing never stopped. Rodgers & Hammerstein wanted her out of the show.

Lawrence, who was head-over-heels in love with Brynner, had no intention of quitting, but 18 months into the run, during the heat of a NYC summer, she collapsed. She was diagnosed with that damn cancer. She told her lawyer from her hospital bed:

“I don’t think I’m going to get out of this place. See that Yul gets star billing. He has earned it.”

& she wasn’t just talking about his acting.

When Lawrence took that final curtain call in early autumn 1952, the lights on Broadway &  London’s West End were dimmed in her honor.

When Oscar Hammerstein told Brynner he would at last receive the top billing, he began to cry. Hammerstein:

“He told me, & I believed him, that losing Lawrence was a too tremendous a price to pay for advancement. It was the only time I ever saw him cry.”

There is a rather good, if slightly messy, film based on the life of Gertrude Lawrence that is filled with first rate musical numbers, Star!, with Julie Andrews as Lawrence. The 1968 film, directed by Robert Wise, mostly gets it right.

Some people were up in arms last week about rainbow flags, but we are all under one red, white and blue banner, regardless of our beliefs. Artists have been riffing on the American flag to make protest statements, rally political ideologies and show their patriotism for most of the 20th century and into the 21st. According to Wikipedia;

The national flag of the United States of America, often referred to as the American flag, consists of thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the canton (referred to specifically as the “union”) bearing fifty small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternating with rows of five stars. The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 states of the United States of America, and the 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain, and became the first states in the Union. Nicknames for the flag include the Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, and the Star-Spangled Banner. The design of the flag has been modified 26 times officially since 1777. The 48-star flag was in effect for 47 years until the 49-star version became official on July 4, 1959. The 50-star flag was ordered by President Eisenhower on August 21, 1959 and was adopted in July 1960. It is the longest-used version of the U.S. flag and has been in use for over 55 years.

So, here’s my little Fourth of July online exhibit by some of my favorite artists. It’s a wide range, so like America, there’s something for everyone. Happy Fourth!

This is sort of impossible to believe, but you can see for yourself. Media analyst Mark Dice asks beachgoers in San Diego, California some basic questions about America’s 4th of July Independence Day celebration and their answers are quite shocking, if not outright disturbing. Jay Leno used to do this on The Tonight Show and he once asked people on the street what the Gettysburg Address was… my favorite answer was,

“…well, I don’t know the EXACT address.”

Watch –no doubt with your mouth hanging open.

July 5, 1889Jean Maurice Eugène Clément Cocteau

I am a hyphenate: ne’er-do-well-bon-vivant-hedonist-reluctant-star-cultural icon-star fucker. My husband is a hyphenate; most people in Portland are, as an artist-designer-business own, he is a bit of an underachiever, but not when compared with poet-artist-playwright-actor-designer-photographer-filmmaker-boxing manager Jean Cocteau. Cocteau published his first volume of poems when he was just 19 years old. He was a celebrated artist & popular man-about-town in Paris, with the success of several ballets & plays that he wrote while still in his 20s.

In the early 1920s, Cocteau’s lover, writer Raymond Radiguet, died of typhoid fever & a despondent Cocteau escaped the pain of his loss with a little help from opium. In 1930, Cocteau tried filmmaking as the medium best suited for his very individual artistic expression. Cocteau’s stylized, homoerotic films are taken from his own drawings: bold, simple strokes, accentuated eyes, minimalist outlines & profiles, along with the erotic, surrealistic portraits that dominate the sets of his films. In his later works, Cocteau included bits of his poetry written in his distinctive handwriting, samples of his drawings & paintings, voice-over narration, & even casts himself in some of the roles.

Cocteau’s work is marked by whimsical special effects, exotic landscapes & themes of narcissism, the Orpheus myth, mirrors, passage ways to secret worlds, fairy tales, flowers, & beautiful people in iconic settings.

In 1937, Cocteau met Jean Marais, the most famous of his many lovers, & he helped make this talented, handsome, & athletic young man into one of France’s most beloved movie stars. Cocteau & Marais made such classics films as La Belle et la Bête & Orphée together & changed filmmaking forever.

Cocteau believed that artists should speak out against unjust political domination although he was burdened by the barely hidden secrets of his opium use & homosexuality which made him particularly vulnerable to attack by France’s right-wing government. During the Nazi Occupation, his plays were banned & Cocteau became a victim of intimidation, physical violence & homophobic insults. But still, Cocteau continued to write, make films, travel, & attract famous friends, patrons, & protégés throughout the rest of his life. Cocteau even managed to be elected to the prestigious Académie Français.

Cocteau was friends with the most important figures of the Parisian avant-garde, including writer Guillaume Apollinaire & artists Amedeo Modigliani & Pablo Picasso. He was so taken with gay dancer Vaslav Nijinsky of the Ballets Russes that he asked the company’s gay founder Sergei Diaghilev to collaborate. Cocteau designed posters for the Ballets Russe, & in 1917 he help produce the theatrical spectacle Parade, writing the libretto, with Erik Satie composing the music, & Picasso designing the set & costumes.

Cocteau died of a heart attack in 1963, just an hour after learning of his muse Édith Piaf‘s death. A classic overachiever, during his long life Cocteau wrote more than 30 volumes of poetry, 7 novels, 24 plays, 11 ballets, 6 operas, 6 full length films, & produced 1000s of drawings & photographs. He contributed to the worlds of publishing, graphic design, clothing design, & interior design. He managed a professional boxer, who became the sport’s first Hispanic world champion. He had affairs with Edouard Dermit, whom he legally adopted, the boxer Panama Brown, whom he managed, & teenage writing prodigy Raymond Radiguet, plus a few women. Where did he find the energy & time? I am spent by writing a #BornThisDay column & walking my terriers.

Jean Cocteau remains one of France’s most famous, & most adored cultural icons, & one of the most fascinating gay men of the 20th century. How about his life story as a film starring Adrian Brody directed by Wes Anderson?

Casa Malaparte

Casa Malaparte

Intended as a sideways wink to the infamous Casa Malaparte on the eastern side of the Italian island of Capri, Casa Brutale is an unbuilt and innovative wood, glass, and concrete design that converges with the surrounding earth offering amazing views of the Aegean from its cliffside perch. A glass-bottom swimming pool on the roof is a poetic continuation of the blue sky and sea. This liquid design element also functions as a skylight that illuminates the minimalist interiors below which feature a massive glass facade that will someday frame the beauty of the ocean views, if it ever gets built. Fifty steps lead down to the entrance — an rotating door of vintage wood — while the bare concrete and wooden planks of the interior are a nod to the the brutalist movement. It’s 21st century Bond. Just add helicopter and a Tesla, a Rothko, Dom and a sexy companion. I know, you can already see the demise of our villain as Bond flies away in the helicopter with the girl, and fires a parting shot into the pool…

Miami – Since purchasing the house in 1999, Calvin Klein was always pretty private about publicity and photos of his Miami Beach house. Bruce Weber photographed it for Vanity Fair in 2008 and now that he has listed the 1929 home for sale for $16 million, we can finally get a good look inside. The 5,800 square foot isn’t gigantic, but it comes with a few thousand more square feet of indoor-outdoor living space, 113 feet of bay frontage, an infinity pool, courtyard. It has five bedrooms, five ensuite baths with an additional two half baths too. CK has the big bucks, so I’m not sure why he’s selling this place… until you get a look at his NEW place in L.A. #BornThisDay: TV Host, Merv Griffin

griffin best

July 6, 1925– When Mervyn Edward Griffin died, he left behind: Wheel Of Fortune, Jeopardy  (both game shows invented & produced) & its theme song, hotels, real estate ventures, more than a billion dollars, & a great deal of speculation. According to the biography Merv Griffin: A life In The Closet written by his pal Darwin Porter, Griffin’s first big crush was Errol Flynn, who Griffin saw passed out naked on a couch. Griffin was roommates with gay actor Montgomery Clift for 2 years. He lived with gay actor Roddy McDowall at the famed Dakota Apartments in NYC, where Griffin introduced Eddie Fisher to Elizabeth Taylor, & we all know how that worked out. He had an affair with gay actor Rock Hudson, who he had met through gay Henry Wilson, Hudson’s agent, who advised him to keep his gayness locked in the closet, plus there was a young James Dean selling sex for cash. He had an affair with Judy Garland‘s Meet Me In St. Louis (1944) boy next door,  Tom Drake. Golden Age Of Hollywood stars Peter Lawford & Robert Walker  were on his list of conquests, plus a liaison with Marlon Brando. He was famous in LA gay circles for his all-male pool parties with hired porn stars serving up the refreshments.

I used to come home from elementary school & let myself into our house with a key, let the dog out, practice the piano & then settle in to watch The Merv Griffin Show (1962-1986) I was already zany for show biz & I was big on Merv’s regular guests including: Eva Gabor, Moms Mabley, Pamela Mason, & the special song stylings of Mrs. Miller. Griffin had all sorts of guests from all manner of celebrity: actors, sports figures, singers, scientists, musicians, politicians, writers, & people famous for being famous. Watching the show, you might catch Rosa Parks sitting beside John Wayne, Salvador Dai with Aretha Franklin, Hedy Lamarr alongside Woody Allen. He once had booked comic Phyllis Diller who remained on the couch for an interview with Mitsuo Fuchida, the Japanese navy officer who planned & led the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, a moment so nutty that I considered giving up smoking pot.

Griffin had an overly concerned conversational style which created the perfect atmosphere for conducting interviews that could be deadly serious or seriously silly depending on the guest. Rather than do an interview for the customary 6 minute talk show segment, Griffin would provide lengthy, deep discussions, sometimes stretching out for more than 30 minutes. Sometimes Griffin would dedicate an entire show to a single person or topic, something you never saw with Johnny Carson, or in our era, with Jimmy Fallon or Jimmy Kimmel. Griffin had a swell sidekick in elderly British character actor Arthur Treacher who, after reading off the names of the guests, would introduce Griffin with the phrase: “…& now, here’s the dear boy himself, Meeeer-vin!”. In 1970, when Griffin relocated the show from NYC to LA, he left behind Treacher who told him: “at my age, I don’t want to move, especially to someplace that shakes”. After that, Griffin would announce himself, walking on stage after saying: “& now… heeeere I come!”

Griffin’s not so secret gay life was well known in showbiz circles, but not to his viewers. He seemed to have suffer from what I call the Liberace Syndrome, where he could not consider that his middle-American, middle-aged, mostly female fans would accept his gayness, when all the rest of the world could hardly ignore it.

In 1991, the subject of his sexuality became an issue when he was targeted in a couple of lawsuits, one by Dance Fever host Denny Terrio who alleged sexual harassment, & by his “personal assistant” Brent Plott seeking $200 million in palimony. Both suits were eventually dismissed. Eva Gabor played his beard. Nothing was discussed in the media or in his own group of friends, particularly in straight political circles. Though he quietly led a gay life, with the pool parties & a parade of boyfriends, his gayness was viewed as “private” information that was not discussed in mixed company.

Even in the 1980s, near the end of his life, Griffin deflected the gay questions with quips, determined to keep his private life remain private. He felt that he needed no explanation. I think maybe he owed it to himself to open up the secret he’d been forced to hide throughout his life.

Griffin had an exalted place in the Hollywood firmament at a time when being gay was unthinkable & the allegation alone would ruin a career. I think that the public would have been more tolerant about his being gay as he grew into old age. Griffin’s little brush with tabloid scandal probably only drove him deeper into the closet.

Griffin’s closet kept him shockingly silent while he had easy access to POTUS as gay people were dying by the thousands. He was BFFs with the Reagans, Nancy in particular, they share a birthday today. During the height of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, with few treatments available & fear-mongering having gripped the media, Griffin said nothing. His friends, his lovers, gay men across America & around the world suffered & met horrifying deaths. Griffin stayed closeted & it is highly unlikely he ever connected the dots for the Reagans, pointing out the government indifference, or even talking openly about being a gay person. Ronnie & Nancy probably knew he was gay, but it was something that always went unspoken. The Reagans probably rationalized that Griffin was not like “those dreadful people”. Maybe it wasn’t true anyway… maybe he was actually dating Eva Gabor. Griffin stayed silent about the epidemic in the media, ironic because he was at the center of the media & a major force in shaping the TV industry when his voice would have made a huge difference.

Griffin’s final credits rolled in 2007, at 82 years old. He left behind a gigantic fortune & a bunch of unanswered questions.

#DumpTrump: A Clueless Donald Is Surprised The Backlash Is “This Severe”

150617115820-donald-trump-620xa

Last week was NOT good for Donald Trump, no matter what Donald Trump says. Multiple business interests, personalities and the Republican party itself are distancing themselves, if not breaking ties altogether with the POTUS wannabe. Trump admitted Saturday that he didn’t think the corporate backlash to his inflammatory comments about Mexican immigrants would be “quite this severe.” In an interview on Fox News, he addressed the recent spate of businesses that have severed their relationships with his brand;

“I knew it was going to be bad because I was told this. All my life I have been told this: If you are successful, you don’t run for office. I didn’t know it was going to be quite this severe, but I really knew it was going to be bad.

It seems like I’m sort of the whipping post because I bring it up. And I don’t understand whether you are liberal or whether you are conservative or whether you are Republican, Democrat — why wouldn’t you talk about a problem?” Trump said Saturday. “The crime is raging. It’s violent, and people don’t want to even talk about it. If you talk about it, you are a racist. I don’t understand it.”

Trump also said that he was “very surprised” at NASCAR, which recently said it would move a series of banquets and conferences -previously scheduled to be held at the Trump National Doral Miami resort- to a different location;

“Because I have so many fans at NASCAR. I love the NASCAR people. I’m really surprised with NASCAR to be honest with you. You know, I have properties in the best locations. The property you are talking about in the case of NASCAR is Trump National Doral, which is probably one of the top resorts in the world. If they don’t go, somebody else does, so, you know, it’s not a big deal.

For the people who say I’m doing it for my brand – this isn’t good for my brand. I think it’s bad for my brand. You know, maybe I’m leading in polls, but this is certainly not good. I lose customers, I lose people.

I had one of the top shows on television, The Apprentice, and I decided not to do it because I wanted to do this. I give up hundreds of millions of dollars of deals where I’m doing this. Then you hear about NASCAR, and you hear about NBC, and you hear about, you know, different people that drop Trump because Trump wants safety in the United States. If you think of it, what am I doing? I say let’s make our country safe, and people are offended. It’s incredible to me.”

AND AS AN ADDED BONUS:
On the fourth of July, I took a visit to the new Whitney Museum to see their inaugural exhibit American Is Hard To See (again) and on the way out I stopped in the gift shop where I happened upon this blank booklet, People I Want To Punch In The Face. The only name written on the first page: Donald Trump.

The Wolfpack

In January, Crystal Moselle’s documentary The Wolfpack debuted to raves at Sundance, winning the Grand Jury Prize for U.S. Documentary and a deal from Magnolia Pictures. The film, is a portrait of the Angulo brothers, a group of home-schooled teenagers rarely allowed to leave their Lower East Side apartment for their entire lives. Moselle ran into them on the street and the rest is BOYStory. They used movies (which they memorized and often re-create, see video below) as their portal into world outside. It’s amazing how Moselle’s camera seems to empower these young men, to push them to venture outside the apartment and see the “real” world. Their notions of their world have been, to a great extent, formed by what is captured on film; finding themselves on the other side of the camera must be truly a trip through the looking glass. These are true 21st century boys.
