The niece of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Alveda King, not only says it’s ‘impossible’ for two people of the same sex to be married, she went on a self-assured rant. While appearing on a marriage equality panel held by the anti-gay, hate group Family Research Council –the one Josh Duggar just resigned from, btw.

“It’s impossible to marry two men to each other or two women, it’s just not possible. The two cannot become one. It is biologically impossible, scientifically impossible, emotionally impossible, definitely spiritually impossible.”

Uh, guess it’s not POSSIBLE, right? You might be related to Dr. King but you don’t have his oratory skills, Alveda. King who is (surprise!) a Fox News contributor as well as a “Christian” minister, said no matter what courts rule, clergy should NOT perform same-sex marriages and that gays are the only ones who THINK they’re married.

“It is not possible, it is impossible. We have to be able to articulate that on all the levels we just said: spiritual, physical, science.”

In the second video below, King speaks of an openly gay man who was the godfather to her three oldest children before she became a “Christian”…

“He did not think he was married to another man because in those days that confusion did not exist – it is confusion.”

She told him that his “lifestyle is not going to work for you in eternity” and recommended that he remain celibate. Confused? Choosing “a “lifestyle for eternity”…? Yes, someone is definitely confused, Alveda.

Little 6 year-old Maisie Gregory had the rare opportunity to meet Queen Elizabeth II and she did her part perfectly, offering a bouquet of flowers and making a nice little curtsy. The Queen starts to depart and the girl gets immediately smacked in the face by a soldier putting his hand up to salute. Maisie’s mom says the soldier apologized right away and her daughter is fine. June 14, 1961– George Alan O’Dowd. Who among us has not restrained a rent boy to a radiator? I mean you can’t trust them to be left alone in the room. What is a pop star supposed to do?

When he was at the very apex of his pop music fame, before the bruising blows of rejection by fickle fans, the drug addiction, jail time & tabloid infamy, Boy George was the very embodiment of fantasy escapism. All the way back in the zany 1980s, he was our Karma Chameleon, blurring the boundaries of sexuality & gender. Ahead of his time, Boy George was our example of how to transcend our physical limitations & become something other than who & what we are. Using bewitchment, beauty, & bemusement, Boy George proved that you could be anything & anyone & achieve acclaim.

Boy George: British gay soul singer, songwriter, DJ, Broadway composer, stage actor, Grammy winner, Tony nominee, fashion designer, sexually ambiguous gender-bending superstar, trendsetter, model, writer, gay rights spokesperson, anti-racism stalwart & animal rights activist. In the 1980s, everyone on our pretty spinning blue orb was fascinated by Boy George, with his dreadlocks, dresses, exotic make-up & Hasidic hats. For a moment, he was the most famous person on the planet. On talk shows & in interviews, he was pretty, witty & gay, charming fans of all ages.

“There’s this illusion that homosexuals have sex & heterosexuals fall in love. That’s completely untrue. Everybody wants to be loved.”

Yet, during those years of Culture Club, Boy George was helplessly drawn to the drama that came to define that genuinely great 1980s group whose tensions within the band were played out with such flamboyance that they soon resembled a public soap opera, with today’s birthday boy the ringmaster. At the center of it all was Boy George’s turbulent relationship with bandmate Jon Moss, a relationship that Moss, now divorced with 3 children, spent years denying had even taken place. Moss now says that he is a straight guy who had a single gay affair.

Boy George enjoyed hit records & international recognition as a celebrity until revelations about his secret hard drug problem hit the tabloids. At the end of the 1980s he began to rehabilitate & reinvent himself. No longer an outsider, freak, or victim, he became to an almost respectable figure. He turned to Buddhism, pacifism & vegetarianism.

But, by the mid-1990s he was back to the drugs, the booze & plenty of trouble. He was involved in a series of scandals, drug arrests & peculiar behavior, but who else could wear an ankle monitor with such finesse?

But, Boy George claims that he has been sober & happy since 2008. He continues to record music (a new single dropped this spring), DJ & make fodder for the tabloids.

“Not knowing when to shut up was one of my greatest faults.”

Boy George has sold over 100 million singles & 60 million albums worldwide. He promises another album & tour with Culture Club. Like me, he seems to own a lot of hats. Boy George has 2 terrific, highly readable volumes of memoirs, Take It Like A Man (1995) & Straight (2005).  I have been a Boy George fan from the very start . I now that he is a friend of the World Of Wonder family. This year marks the 34th anniversary of Culture Club.

“When things are awful, you think, ‘Oh my god, everybody’s hideous.’ Then you encounter someone who’s really amazing & sweet, & you think, ‘Oh my god, people are great.’ We all do that thing of judging other people for the way they look or the car they drive, we all do it. No matter how “spiritual” we are, we still think “Wanker!” & sometimes it’s nice to have your ideas challenged. I like that.”

Being well-known, does have its downside. A few days ago, I posted a video where Courtney Barnes was seen enjoying newfound internet fame, as a witness to a car crash. Barnes went in to the police the next day to pay parking ticket fines, but was detained after officers noticed the reality star resembled someone from a shoplifting surveillance video.

The owner of Swell-O-Phonic (I’m not kidding) where the alleged theft took place, posted a clip to Instagram five weeks ago. Owner, Ron Chane, wrote;

“This thief is wanted for shoplifting. If you have any information on them please private message us.”

Instagram users noticed the person resembled Barnes and wrote quotes from the Barnes’ viral video. But the store doesn’t want anything to do it;

“We want to stay away from the negative attention. Courtney has stolen from our store and made our customers and staff uncomfortable. We just want him to stay out of our store. I hope the story gets turned back to the injured officer who deserves the attention.”

The unidentified officer has since recovered from the car crash, but Chane is NOT one of Barnes’ fans;

“It’s all an act to get attention. He has no regard for anyone but himself … You’ve got somebody hurt in a car wreck and this loser is trying to catch his 15 seconds — enjoy it buddy — you’ll be locked up soon.”

Before Barnes was arrested, he posted a video to Instagram @kingdance_ about not being “perfect” and making “mistakes.”

“I do keep God first and I want everybody to know that it will work out for the better. But at the same time, let the negativity continues to come, because without negativity, we cannot do positivity.”

But it wasn’t Courtney’s first appearance in front of a national audience, as he had auditioned twice for So You Think You Can Dance? Barnes has more than 50,000 Instagram followers (& counting) and plans to continue with reality television. Barnes was released from custody and a court date to deal with the shoplifting charge was set for June 23. Yep, she done already had herses, uh-huh.

Jens Risom is a 99 year-old design legend. In the late 1960s, Jens, his wife Iben, and their children lived in New Canaan, Connecticut, but spent summers renting houses on Block Island, a Rhode Island seaside retreat that reminded them of their native Denmark. Risom found a prime spot to build on and researched different options for buying an early prefab, that could stand up to the island’s intense climate. He finally found a company that produced a model that cost $20,700. It could be customized to Risom’s exact specifications, and after drawing up the plans himself, Risom watched as parts were sent by “an ancient tug” from the mainland. After completion, he decided to show it off;

“The popular magazines were all saying that one 
couldn’t build a summer home for less than $25,000. So I contacted Life magazine and said, ‘well, I have one.’”

Life was impressed and the resulting article helped to raise the profile of modular construction. As the years rolled by, the family happily spent every summer at the house, fishing, collecting stones, and walking the trails of the island. But after decades of wear and tear, some maintenance is required. It was decided that the doors on the front wall of glass be removed and all of the glass replaced. John Spier, a local contractor, was called in to oversee the job;

“Working with big glass is always scary. But it was more nerve-racking taking the old glass out because it wasn’t safety glass. You work it out of the frame carefully, but if it shatters and breaks into big lethal shards—let’s just say we were happy to get all the old glass out without bleeding too much.”

Risom and his second wife, Henny, do not often make the trek from Connecticut but when Dwell was shooting these photos, they came to see the new renovations;

“I was worried it was going to look too new.”

What a life and what a perfect retreat for future generations. Simple is always better, especially at the hands of a master.

William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies

Some houses are so grand they become the stuff of legend and The Beverly House, as it’s called, is one that has it all. It sits on 6 flat acres just 3 blocks from Sunset Boulevard, the two-story gate house (with four bedrooms) greets you at one of the L.A.’s longest private drives up to the terra cotta main house and a courtyard fountain. Architect Gordon Kaufmann designed it for banking executive Milton Getz and Marion Davies bought it from him in 1946 for William Randolph Hearst (with Hearst’s money, no doubt.) When I first saw these pictures, not knowing Hearst lived here, it instantly reminded me of his palace San Simeon. Hearst lived here remainder of his life.

The main level includes a 50 foot entry hall, a living room with 22 foot ceilings, and the incredible library with hand carved woodwork and staircase leading to second story wrap-around balcony and bookshelves. The billiard room contains herringbone parquet floors and a massive carved stone fireplace mantle Hearst brought from San Simeon. The outdoor terrace can hold up to 400 for sit-down dining and a garden level has an art-deco night club, wine cellar, and one of two projection rooms in the residence. Another level has a spa with a gym and massage room. The house has a commercial kitchen, offices, outside staff accommodations, lighted tennis court with a bar and media center, a guest house above eight car garage, a separate security cottage and a two bedroom apartment. The house hosted John and Jacqueline Kennedy during their honeymoon. It also played memorable parts in films, like The Bodyguard. In The Godfather in one unforgettable scene, we see the exterior of The Beverly House outside at dawn and the camera takes us into one of the master suites, and the rest is movie history… watch the clip, below.

The interiors of this perfectly-preserved 1926 Spanish Revival estate in Beverly Hills haven’t changed much since the 30s, when it was home to famously private, Marlene Dietrich. Only the most famous resident, the house wasn’t actually owned by Dietrich, but rather by her friend, Countess Dorothy di Frasso, who hired Elsie de Wolfe to design these fab interiors. The New Yorker once said de Wolfe is “credited with single-handedly inventing the profession of interior decorating”. Many of her Art Deco flourishes from the period, including handpainted wallpaper, can still be seen here. Di Frasso used the house for mainly for parties (as one does) and one of her frequent party guests, pianist José Iturbi, loved it so much said if she ever sold it he would be the buyer. Iturbi did buy the house in the 40s the house along with all of the furnishings and lived there until his death in 1980. In 2008, the house was purchased by a clothing company executive Shawn Far, who paid $7 million, but never got around to moving in for some reason. The 8,000-square-foot main house has four bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms, along with a two-bedroom guesthouse and a pool. The new buyer is international, and is someone “with homes all over the world.” Nice addition to the portfolio, I’d say.

I was noticing the LGBT, Gay Pride t-shirts Hillary Clinton‘s website was offering and thought a bit about the ever-expanding GOP field and if they were “pandering” to the gay community too? So far, I haven’t found any for Republican POTUS candidates for 2016… (Tweet me if YOU see any out there @treynyc)

But it turns out, those shirts (and their inclusive messages) seem pretty justified and organic, if you consider who Hillary’s campaign manager is; a 35 year-old gay man, Robby Mook, with a very impressive résumé in Democratic campaigning. Organizing Barack Obama‘s 2008 team in Nevada, Indiana, and Ohio is one of the highlights of his accomplishments, but as campaign manager for the Clinton presidential campaign, Mook is facing biggest challenge to date. Keeping a $1 billion effort of big personalities and bigger egos on track, on time, and on point. If he manages to succeeds, you’ll be hearing the Mook in the coming years. Kelly Ward, who worked under, and eventually succeeded, Mook as executive director of the DCCC says;

“He would rather win races than, no offense, talk to reporters.”

Ward recounted a weekend in 2012 when Mook was still executive director for the DCCC, and organized a canvassing trip for the staff. He spent the ride to the targeted district pouring over spreadsheets of voter information, Ward remembers, looking for an edge, and holding conference calls with pollsters.

“Then he got out of the car, started canvassing, and was better at it than any of us.”

A former Mook staffer told Vice;

“He is a throwback to a campaign professional of an earlier day. In his own way, he walks softly and carries a big stick. He’s great at making the trains run both on-time and in the right direction. Robby is able to do the most modern, Obama-level data and analytics the smartest messaging, the best field tactics but then corral a big group of people to drive towards a common strategy and goal.”

If you ask me –and no one has– he’s the perfect guy to run Hillary’s campaign on a lot of levels. The press and pundits were waiting for a David Axelrod to be called in so they could say it was “Clintonian” politics as usual. Social media and the tough press climate we are in today, needs a fresh approach and us gays, like women, know how to get shit done! Yaaas, Hillary!

Johnson & Johnson‘s latest Tylenol commercial is helping to redefine the modern American family as part of its #HowWeFamily campaign. Directed by the Oscar-winner (for Milk) Dustin Lance Black, it depicts gay, lesbian, and biracial families, and follows in the footsteps of last December’s “Norman Rockwell family” campaign, which reimagined some of the painter’s masterpieces with more diverse subjects. Actress Gabrielle Union and psychiatrist and columnist Gail Saltz will serve as spokeswomen for the program. Manoj Raghunandanan, senior director of marketing for J & J’s expressed pride in the brand’s move to push the movement;

“The reality that we know today is that families look and feel different than they did before and we want to celebrate that fact. Because we’re a family brand, because we’re an iconic American brand, and we want to continue to serve families into the future, I think it’s important that we reflect what that family is today.”

The new ad will air on television this week, and will be part of a three month long campaign during which 10 real families will shown in series of “docu-shorts” all to be housed on a microsite, HowWeFamily.com.

Seems Kristen Stewart has started a new romance. According to her mother, Jules Stewart, the 25-year-old actress has found love with her personal assistant, Alicia Cargile. Jules, 55, told the Sunday Mirror;

“What’s not to be accepting about her now having a girlfriend? She’s happy. I’ve met Kristen’s new girlfriend, I like her. What’s not to accept? She’s a lovely girl.

I accept my daughter loves women and men. It’s ok to be who you are in my world. We all choose our friends so we should be free to choose our lovers.

People are good to do whatever they like as long as they’re not hurting people or breaking the law. I have gay friends, family members, I’m accepting of people. We are all free to choose who we want to love.”

Jules also spoke the end of her daughter’s relationship with her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson who is now engaged to FKA Twigs;

“They were a great couple. I’m very sad that Kristen and Robert didn’t have a chance to be alone together, they had to have the whole world with them and all the public stuff ruined everything, life became overwhelming.”

Blaze Starr, the queen of Baltimore burlesque, died today. She was 83. Born Fannie Belle Fleming she was fabled for the rose petals that she gently blew across her bosom to admiring audiences from the runway of her Two O’Clock Club in Baltimore. Starr said in a 2010 interview;

“Honey, I loved it. But everything has its season.”

She grew up in Twelve Pole Creek, West Virginia, she was one of 11 children, left home at age 15 and boarded a bus for Washington where she worked as a waitress in a doughnut shop. John Waters said of her;

“For a while she was the only famous person Baltimore had. I never actually met her. But Divine and I went down and saw her show. She had such dedicated fans. She was great. I have posters of her. When I was in high school we’d go down to The Block. They never checked IDs. We loved her act. She helped form myself and Divine.”

After a friend took Ms. Starr to the Quonset Hut, a club near Quantico, Virgina, she began working as a stripper. She made her debut on the runway of the Two O’Clock Club in 1950.

“I still dream about it sometimes. I’m dressed and getting ready to go on stage and I can’t find my gloves.”

After hanging up her G-string and pasties in 1975, Starr moved Carroll County, where she launched a second career designing and making jewelry. She later moved home to an 80-acre family compound to care for her mother and a brother, both of whom have since died. In recent years, she and her brother had sold jewelry through her website.

The two had a very public date at Il Pastaio in Beverly Hills yesterday afternoon. Earlier this month, the two were spotted hanging out twice in two different countries.

“Gigi feels very comfortable with Joe and it’s very easy to talk about everything that’s going on in her life with him. He understands where she is at and they are not in any rush.”

And if these together two aren’t cute enough, Gigi brought along her new kitty too. No – I’m not going to make any tacky pussy puns, but what I do want to know is, are they “doing it”? Unless they are “just girlfriends”, girlfriend, I’d say, yaaaas.

DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint has started a Mad Max: Fury Road miniseries focusing on the characters from director George Miller’s movie. The first issue – out last week – shone a spotlight on my boyfriend Nux and Immortan Joe.

Next week, Mad Max Fury Road: Furiosa, will chart the origin story of Furiosa as she hatches her plan to escape Joe’s Citadel and return to the home she was taken from, with Joe’s wives in tow. Director George Miller, Fury Road co-writer Nico Lathouris and Fury Road storyboard artist Mark Sexton all wrote the issue.
