World of Wonder Reinstates Mandatory “Fun T-Shirt Friday” Dress Code

$

It was once a beloved weekly tradition here at WOW: the wearing of wacky t-shirts on Fridays and the ensuing late-afternoon photoshoot to commemorate them. It faded away, as traditions sometimes do, but now I’m happy to say it’s been reinstated. Fun t-shirt Friday is A THING once more. In fact, I think there’s grounds for dismissal if you fail to comply. Welcome back! And here’s today’s batch.

May 16th, 1919- Wladziu Valentino Liberace

“You know that bank I used to cry all the way to? Well, I bought it.”

Here is the craziest part, The Husband & I briefly lived in Las Vegas in 1980 (long story) & even nuttier, we didn’t have an automobile. I would actually walk in the 100 degree heat to the theatre where I was in rehearsal. There were no sidewalks. It was just me & the lizards. My route took me right by the Liberace Museum, just a few blocks from our condo. I always glanced in & I savored the camp factor, but somehow never went in.

Overheard on the Portland MAX Train:

Older Gay Guy: “That guy is so gay.”

Other Guy: “Totally gay.”

Older Gay Guy: “Liberace gay.”

Ironic, the man spent his lifetime hiding the truth & denied being gay to the very end.

His was a household name for decades, but if the baby gays have heard of him now, it is simply as a distant curiosity. But Liberace was an international superstar starting back to the early 1950s. His averaged income was $5 million a year for more than 35 years. In the 1970s, The Guinness Book Of World Records named Liberace as the world’s highest paid musician.

He was born Wladziu Valentino Liberace in a Milwaukee suburb to poor parents. He was classically trained on the piano as a youth & made his concert debut as a soloist at just 11 years old. As a teenager during the depression he played piano in speakeasies to make money for his family.

In 1940, Liberace moved to NYC. His charm & piano skills paid off. Within a few years he was touring the hotel lounge circuit. His tale might have ended there, except that Las Vegas & TV discovered Liberace’s considerable charms. By the early 1950s he began playing extended runs in Las Vegas when the city was just a small cluster of hotels & casinos. He would appear at the showrooms at the casinos regularly for the rest of his life. As Las Vegas grew, so did Liberace’s fame. Las Vegas is a place built on fantasy, superficiality & unbridled spending, Liberace’s very essence. Las Vegas & Liberace both proved the same adage: “Nothing Succeeds Like Excess”.

Liberace appearances on TV cemented that superstar status. In the early 1950s, Liberace had a weekly variety series where he would play his elaborate piano, sing & dance a little, praise his mother Frances who was always in the audience, & make jokes about the show’s band leader his brother George. His TV show was a huge hit, carried by more stations than I Love Lucy.

In 1954, the year I was born, Liberace played to capacity crowds at Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, Hollywood Bowl. In 1955 he opened at the Riviera in Las Vegas with a salary of $50,000 per week, becoming the city’s highest paid entertainer. He bought lavish mansions, remodeled them extravagantly & filled them with ornate pianos, antiques, & rococo furniture. He installed a piano shaped swimming pool.

Liberace’s musical repertoire included a unique mix of classical, film themes, cocktail jazz & sentimental ballads. He knew thousands of songs & could play almost any request from the audience. He would edit his classical pieces to just less than 5 minutes:

“I took out the boring parts. I know just how many notes my audience will stand for. If there’s any time left over, I fill in with a lot of runs up & down the scale.”

Liberace commissioned more elaborate costumes as the years went by. Eventually he was spending $50,000 each season on bigger, nuttier, ever more opulent costumes. He wore a cape made with $60,000 worth of chinchilla, a tuxedo embedded with diamonds spelling out his name, & a King Neptune costume covered in pearls & sea shells weighing 200 pounds. He had large rings shaped like a candelabra & a grand piano, each studded with diamonds. He was the Elton John of his time.

To the act, Liberace added showgirls, jugglers, singers, giant water fountains, light shows, a full orchestra, even an elephant. He flew above the stage from a cable in a feather cape. He toured with a grand piano covered with thousands of glittering mirror tiles. A pre-Funny Girl Barbra Streisand opened for himHow gay is that?

Liberace emphatically denied his gayness throughout his long career. He evidently thought that coming out of the closet would hurt his popularity. His female fans simply refused to recognize the obvious. In 1957, Confidential magazine featured the headline: “Why Liberace’s Theme Song Should Be ‘Mad About The Boy’!” Gossip rags frequently implied that he was gay. He successfully sued 2 publications that attempted to out him. He had a series of “beards” including our beloved Betty White.

Liberace’s denials finally unraveled when he was sued for palimony in 1983 by his “chauffeur” Scott Thorson who had been living with Liberace for years. Liberace had Thorson on the payroll, dressed him up like himself, & paid for plastic surgery to have Thorson look like a young Liberace. Even this bizarre scandal didn’t put a dent in Liberace’s popularity. The case was eventually settled out of court for less than $100,000.

Liberace was at the apex of his career in the mid-1980s. At Radio City Music Hall he had 3 extended engagements. From 1984-86 he sold out 56 shows in a row. He called the Radio City shows “the fulfillment of a dream & the culmination of my 40 years in show business.” Liberace’s fortune continued to grow. He owned houses all over the world & had all of his clothes made especially for him. He even had the front of a Rolls Royce attached to the back of a VW Beatle so he could drive both of his favorite cars at once.

Liberace was in a steady relationship with Jamie Wyatt when the gay world was introduced to the plague. It has never been clear when Liberace discovered that he was HIV+, probably early on, possibly as early as 1985.

In the press, he attributed his sudden weight loss to the popular watermelon diet. After a final tour to promote his new book The Things I Love, Liberace became seriously sick. He spent 4 days in the hospital, but he decided to go home & leave this world comfortably surrounded by all his opulent stuff. He spent his last days at home with his 27 dogs, watching episodes of The Golden Girls. With his family & partner by his side, Liberace took that final bow in early 1987. Only then did the world acknowledge his secret life & his illness.

Liberace lived a life of high showmanship & utter flamboyance. Even in his own era he wasn’t hip & irony was not his shtick, but now his existence embodies the very idea. His fervor for everything fabulous & his considerable talent touched the hearts of his legion of mostly female fans. He did influence many other artists from Elvis to Adam Lambert. Liberace is absolute proof that being fabulous can be a life unto itself.

Steven Soderbergh‘s film version of the Liberace/Scott Thorson story Behind The Candelabra starring Michael Douglas & Matt Damon, made for HBO, was easily one of my favorite films of 2013. I give it a strong A on The Steve Report Card. I strongly believed that Damon’s ass deserved an Emmy Award. When I saw it, I was really ready for just a little sparkle in my own life.

#OnlyInNewYork: New Yorkers & Tourists Get Separate Lanes, “I’m Walkin’ Here!”

Walking on the sidewalk can be tricky, especially in New York City. It seems easy enough, right? – but New Yorkers walk differently than visitors in their fair city. Improv Everywhere is a New York City-based prank collective that has done hilarious pranks around the city over the years like their annual No-pants Day Subway Ride and a flash-mob musical in a random grocery store. For this one, done a few years ago, they created separate walking lanes for tourists and New Yorkers on a Fifth Avenue sidewalk. DOT “employees” were on hand to enforce the new rules and ask pedestrians for their feedback on the initiative. The pics sell the idea but the video really is the end result. Love these guys. Watch.

Vincent Katz, Doreen Remen, Casey Fremont, Alex Katz and Yvonne Force Villareal at the Barneys launch

Alex Katz is 87 and still going strong. He’s just collaborated with Art Production Fund and Barneys New York to create their Madison Avenue windows. The mural spans all four windows, and at 8′ x 60′, is one of the largest works of his long career. It features portraits of 18 women, including Yvonne Force Villareal, Doreen Remen, and Casey Fremont (all from APF), Ada Katz (his longtime wife and muse), and Elizabeth McAvoy. This is the second partnership between Barneys and Art Production Fund, who collaborated two years ago to launch a collection with the estate of Roy Lichtenstein (I bought several pieces, but it sold out almost immediately) Katz’s a line of merchandise in his signature style has a bit of a twist… Barney asked Katz…

The color scheme is unexpected for you. Why black and white when you usually use such bold colors?
I’ve been doing it a lot lately, and it’s the opposite of what tends to please people—you know, lots of colors. Also, black and white is always a fitting color scheme for New York. I think the products turned out really well like that. I’d like to give some to my wife.

How does your art translate onto items like bags and bedding, as opposed to being created on canvases to be admired on a wall?
I wouldn’t want to do it for a living, but it’s really fun to do. I like to mix it up. I do stage sets. It’s all a way of extending your vision. The overall message is just fun. Honestly, it’s what I could get away with! I have a publisher who goes with anything I do now, because if I do the right things, he can make money! I asked him if we could do prints of the windows—in the same size—which stressed him to no end. So, we made 18 additional prints, which was so much fun.

What is the relationship like between the art world and the commerce world?
Art is supposed to be eternal and fashion is always moving, but I’ve learned that art moves just like fashion. In the art world, there’s a no-no regarding fashion. People think fine art is above fashion, and I think that’s ridiculous! Now, there’s a big merging of the two. When I had my show in Paris recently, I had about 15 magazines review me. It was a fine art show yet most of my reviews came from the fashion world. The fashion world is moving into the art world, and not the other way around.

What’s your own relationship with the fashion world like?
I’ve been involved with fashion for quite some time. I’ve designed sets and costumes for Paul Taylor Dance Company. I also grew up in an atmosphere of fashion, and my parents were involved with clothes, so it was very natural. I like window-shopping, but I hate trying on clothes. I never dress up anymore, but I used to. When I came to New York, the artists dressed very conventionally as artists—you know with paint on their clothes, very bohemian. I never dressed that way. I would wear a shirt and tie and tweed jacket. I didn’t want to paint like them, and I didn’t want to look like them either!

Mel Oldom‘s style defined the 70s and 80s and vice versa. You might know it from his vintage posters, book covers, a line of Paper Moon cards, and First Eyes, his first book. Odom’s work has appeared in a variety of magazines over the years, like Time, the now-defunct Omni, Rolling Stone, and the 80s gay classic, Blue Boy, but his favorite work was for Playboy. His illustrations earned him multiple awards from The Society of Illustrators and other graphics and illustration organizations. In the 90s, Mel expanded his reach and channeled his passion for dolls into his faux movie star doll from 40s “Gene Marshall” and she was a big hit in the doll world, voted by collectors the most important doll since Barbie. But as a gay man, to me, his retro-sexy guys were always his most interesting contribution to art –like a Deco Tom of Finland. Here are some hotties for you to ponder. You can see many more and even buy works on Mel’s new site here.

#FirstShowLastShow: Vito Schnabel’s 190 Bowery Opening Was More Like a Sh*t Show

unnamed-3

Well, apparently a LOT of people turned up last evening for the chance to see the inside of 190 Bowery and take a peek at the Aby Rosen & Vito Schnabel group exhibition, First Show/Last Show. I didn’t even bother because started to see an avalanche of press and heard that they were trying to call the whole thing off. And that’s exactly what happened, according to artnet, the show…

“has been abruptly closed to the public for reasons unknown.”

Well, I can guess one reason; fear.

“The show will be open by appointment May 18 – 29, Monday through Friday from 12-6 p.m. Closed Memorial Day. Please respond with your requested time and we will do our best to accommodate you.”

You have to RSVP here.

The original invitation didn’t require an RSVP and the Observer had pointed out:

Titled First Show/Last Show, Schnabel’s exhibition brings the work of seven auction-approved white male artists together under the cryptic rubric that their art “immediately conveys its significance,” a super power that is obviously absent from any artwork authored by a woman or a person of color.

I can see how people could see that as bad, and even though it’s not by any means “diverse”, not every show is curated with political correctness. But saying this was “open to the public”, as are most all art gallery exhibits, and then taking it back, really doesn’t look good, guys. We may never get a peek inside… that is until the ground floor is leased to Duane Reade… no word on who that tenant would be but if they wanted it to be an art gallery, this is the worst kind of PR.

Yes, it’s Eurovision time again. Maybe you realized it existed for the first time last year when Conchita Wurst took the top prize. Americans continue to be puzzled by these acts, songs and the whole damn contest. If you think Americas Got Talent, Idol and The Voice are tedious, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Denmark’s Anti Social Media (yes, that’s their name) and Finland’s heavy metal band Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, (huh?) represent two ends of the music spectrum –both bad but they’re in the semifinals. Those are this week and the Grand Finalé is on Saturday when 130 million are expected to watch. You can see it all online here, if you like torture. The opening ceremonies in Vienna went on for three hours, if you can imagine. Watch Anti Social Media & Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät and as a palate cleanser, re-watch Conchita’s winning number, Rise Like a Phoenix, to see just how it’s done.
