Did Leona Lewis Just Rip Off “Rolling In the Deep”?

Leona Lewis is back after eight years away from the US charts with a tubthumping dance anthem “Fire Under My Feet.” The video features “individuals who are each marching to the beat of their own drummers” – like superfab supermodel Shaun Ross, that dancer Cassandra Naud with the ginormous birthmark, a random drag queen, a little ballet boy, a tattoo artist, and others. The real reason you’re watching it, though, is to judge for yourself how similar the song is to Adele‘s “Rolling in the Deep.”

Says Towleroad:

It is too early to tell whether or not enough of a resemblance exists between the two songs for any legal action to be taken, as the song has only just dropped. However, a controversy is likely the last thing Lewis is hoping for with this song especially given the legal back-and-forth that ensued with DJ and producer Avicii over her performance of the song “Collide” in 2011.

Pink’s Dress: Toot It or Boot It?

Whatwhatwhat is going on here? We really need to sit down and have a frank discussion about Pink and her latest sartorial… disaster? triumph? I don’t know what to think of this. On the one hand: WOW. It’s a GOWN. An old-time, mummy-and-daddy-are-off-to-the-Country-Club-don’t-wait-up-us BALL GOWN. And it’s kind of brilliant. Very Endora. Very Duchess of Windsor. I need it. But on the other hand: It’s a bit AGING, don’t you think? She’s still a rockstar (she’s got her rock moves, she’s having more fun etc), and she’s famously in phenomenal shape. Maybe she should be a bit more bod-con while she can? What do you think? Like it or lump it? Toot it or boot it? I’m going to give it a “hell yes” because when ANYONE channels their inner Tyne Daly, they deserve all the love and support in the world.

PS– It’s the glass of Chardonnay that REALLY sells it, don’t you think?

#JapanOfCourse: Two Girls Try to Blow a Cockroach Into Each Other’s Mouth

0

Gotta love those Japanese gameshows. This one features a particularly toe-curling challenge – Watch as two girls blow a bug back and forth in a glass tube, trying to get it down the other’s throat. Now, many YouTube commenters are saying the bug in question is a ciccada not a cockroach, which doesn’t really change things in my mind. It’s still DISGUSTING. Watch the fun, below.

Via BarstoolSports:

The chick who ended up winning came within an inch of losing like 2 or 3 times. Able to withstand the furious blow job onslaught her opponent unleashed. She dug deep for one last blow and – BAM! – cockroach right down that bitch’s throat. I bet that thing didnt’t even end up in her stomach. Right into the lungs. Probably in there right now like when Pinocchio was inside that whale.  Vile. Absolutely vile.

Of course, if you were paying attention, the girl on the left cheated. She closed her teeth so the bug wouldn’t go in her mouth! HA! Not going to hate on her for it though. You do what you gotta do.

#FriezeNewYork: A Ferry Ride with a VIP Crowd, DIY Dots, Drinks, Dinner, NPH – Oh and Some Art Too…

The Frieze Art Fair has been held in a huge custom tent on Randall’s Island for the last several years. My pal, Domino magazine’s Susan Kilkenny, and I have gone to the VIP previews the together, starting out at the 35th Street pier. You board ferry that whisks a stylish art crowd up the East River (where I ran into T Magazine‘s Esin Goknar, my old Vanity Fair colleague, and the forever-cool art producer, Joy Glidden) past the United Nations, Roosevelt Park ands delivers you to art fair heaven. The structure itself is part of the huge appeal of this fair, which began in London, and the stable of galleries are really international, first-class. It’s always a bit overwhelming, even for art fair veterans. We saw a few booths but made our way directly to the restaurant Frankie’s Sputino to put our name down on the list, which had a 45 minute wait…

The big participation event of the fair seemed to be Gavin Brown’s Jonathan Horowitz installation… New York magazine’s art critic Jerry Saltz was caught trying his hand but I’ll let Houston-based sculptor, Mel Chin tell the main story…

“Long cold blooded story… Freezed out at Frieze Art Fair. I decided to join the fun, helping out at Gavin Brown’s Enterprise to produce a optional dot for artist Johnathan Horowitz’s dot collection.(retail: 100 grand) Besides they were offering 20 bucks… l needed cash for the ferry. I admit I was reacting to the conformity, might be rightfully accused of being a “sasshole” , did water down the paint and my dot was not perfect… I wanted to be expressive. The artist assistant no. 1 said it was not acceptable… artist asst. No. 2 wanted to take it away… And said I would not be paid. I was going to offer it to the artist but they would not bring him over. Dealer Brown said nothing and looked away. It wasnt even a urinal! Fellow artist, Jennie C. Jones was on the spot and documented the rejection. All ended well. I donated the inverted dot to the Brooklyn Museum. Curator Eugenie Tsai & trustees present, officially accepted my gift over lunch and I hightailed it outta there.” –Mel Chin

Another crowd favorite were two painted massage chairs by Korakrit Arunanondchai that were the definition of “becoming moved by art”. Artist Joaqin Carter highly recommended it, and said:

“I only came once.”

He also got the ubiquitous art fair photo pop with Eva & Adele, the duo performance art couple that always wears custom matching outfits and a cheerful demeanor.

We spent too much time at the restaurant, as we normally do, and then had 30 minutes to see 2/3 of the fair… and stopping to talk to people like the fab André Walker and Houston’s Contemporary Art Museum director Bill Arning and others pals ate up a few more minutes here and there but being social is part of the experience. (Neil Patrick Harris, who has a townhouse just across the river, was making the rounds but I didn’t bump into him…) Below are some of my favorites. If you’re in New York, I’d recommend taking the ferry and spending a few hours in and maybe even one hour outside on Randall’s Island… it’s like mini art vacation. For more info about hours, directions, etc, go here.

The Hottest Red Carpet Looks at Cannes

It’s Cannes, of course, and TOUT LE MONDE is there, pushing their latest project. Every year it gets a little dressier and the style stakes get a little higher. The daytime photo calls, which used to just be a jeans-and-tshirt affair, have now turned into the sort of occasion where only Chanel Resort will do. Even the guys are in on it. Check out the hottest looks so far (and we’re only two days in!) after the jump.

A Gay Man’s Guide to the Best Songs to Listen to While Dusting: 1970s Edition

0
0

Another comprehensive (and absolutely hysterical) list of songs to help make dusting time fun time, from one of our favorite wowlebrities David Munk (Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys) via his blog Stargayzing. This time, the theme is 1970s Feminism.

Writes David:

In the early-1970s, my parents split up and my mom quickly reinvented herself as an Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymorestyle feminist.  No longer satisfied with the limitations of 1950s-era definitions of women’s sex roles, my mother pushed back: cooking and cleaning were out and the full-time pursuit of her dream of become a psychologist were in (along with a subscription to Ms. and a National Organization of Woman t-shirt).  To memorialize her commitment mom adapted a now-iconic women’s lib poster illustrated by “Virtue Hathaway” (real name: Shirley Boccaccio) into a needlepoint.  The poster depicted an ethereal-looking woman with a broken broomstick below the words “Fuck Housework” in a bold, Old English font.  Though she simplified the design by eliminating the woman and retaining the broom and the text, mom still made her statement effectively, especially when she hung the finished piece in the seldom-used dining room, the erstwhile location of our family dinners from when we used to have a family…

FuckHouseworkPoster-1

…It is only now, from the vantage point of maturity, that I can fully appreciate the irony of expressing intolerance of 1950′s-era sex roles via the most traditional of women’s past times: needlework.

Here then is Stargayzing’s Gay Man’s Guide to the 11 Best Songs to Listen to While Dusting: 1970s Feminist Edition.  Hopefully it will gently discourage you, dear readers, from ever saying, “Fuck Housework!”

1. “I Am Woman” Helen Reddy (1973)

If Carole King’s Tapestry is the album that defined a generation of women, then Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman” was their anthem.  The song expressed the zeitgeist with startling precision and, despite lyrics that were considered strident, even militant, by many, became a ubiquitous call to action in 1973.   For young women like my mother and her friends, the empowering mid-tempo “I Am Woman” was a thrilling pop music repudiation of sex roles that felt as constricting as the girdles they wore to their proms.  Helen’s song was the musical equivalent of the contemporaneous Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress: freeing; empowering; and incredibly new.

The song holds up quite well both as a symbol of its era and as a very well-constructed, pleasant pop song.  Ironically, it is also quite excellent for dusting, suggesting broad, powerful strokes.

2. “Sam” Olivia Newton-John (1976)

As I do consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur of popular music, I felt strongly it was important to include at least one song in 3/4 time; a waltz always suggests a powerful inclination toward the grand gesture.  In other words: it is perfect for housework, particularly dusting.

Sam” was included on Olivia Newton-John’s 1977 Don’t Stop Believin’ LP (no connection to the song by Journey) and went to #20 on the pop chart and #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart.  It was produced and co-written by John Farrar, who was behind most of Olivia’s hit songs and co-written by Hank Marvin (lead guitarist for The Shadows), and Don Black (lyricist of “Ben,” “Born Free,” and “Diamonds Are Forever,” among many others).  I still love its neo-Liberace piano arrangement.  It is a song I try to listen to at least once a month and now that I have a new roommate named Sam, perhaps even more than that.

One year after its initial release, “Sam” was included on Livvy’s first collection of greatest hits, which is where I first heard it.  Listening to it today brings me right back to 7th grade and to the importance of maintaining a tidy home.

To (and hear) see the entire list, go to Stargayzing.com

See: previously.

Earlier this week, Azealia Banks performed a sold-out show at Irving Plaza in NYC. You might have heard that there was a little brawl that broke out, but Banks handled the situation like the true queen from the 212 that she is.

“We’re not gonna be fighting in the crowd,” says Banks. “I don’t care who started it, but ya’ll better stop touching. I’m gonna count to ten and then keep this show going.”

Now that that’s settled, can we talk about how GORGE Azealia shined in that sparkly corset by The Blonds? Now that’s how you truly shut it down! Check out pics below by Santiago Felipe, the whole fight HERE, and look for AB’s sophomore album Business & Pleasure, due out in 2016. (via The Fader)

#FirstLook: The Season Two “True Detective” Trailer Looks Just As Intense As The First

maxresdefault

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto wrote all eight episodes of this second season, which is set in L.A. this time around. Colin Farrell plays detective Ray Velcoro, alongside Taylor Kitsch, who plays a California Highway Patrolman. Vince Vaughn is slated to portray a criminal caught in the middle, as the officers entangle themselves in a very tense murder investigation.

“Sometimes your worst self is your best self.”

…says Vince Vaughn at the start of this new, minute-long trailer. The rest of the clip shows him with a crew investigating what looks like an apartment complex for reasons that have yet to be revealed, and a close-up on Colin Farrell’s bloody knuckles, as a voiceover says:

“My strong suspicion is we got the world we deserve.”

Rachel McAdams in particular says she’s excited to play such a gritty role, as a Ventura County Sheriff. She recently told Marie Claire:

“She doesn’t really care what everyone thinks; she feels no responsibility for other people’s feelings. She’s not trying to be charming, which isn’t always the case with a leading lady…. Not that you want to be a horrendous character, just a little more human.”

Watch.

Halleloo, Beyoncé Pad Thai! Yes, a deal has been struck between Hulu and NBC Universal for another 26 episodes of The Mindy Project. Fox canceled the series last week and this project is the latest broadcast show to be rescued – Yahoo picked up Community last year. But, so far, it’s the only canceled series this season to get lucky. Others are being shopped around –like NBC’s Constantine & Fox’s The Following– this season has otherwise seen more than 30 programs shut down like the former juggernaut American Idol.

Bianca Del Rio Rhapsodizes Over the Glory of “Auntie Mame”

The BFI (the British Film Institute) caught up with RuPaul’s Drag Race season 6 winner Bianca Del Rio and asked her about her favorite film of all time: Auntie Mame.  For you heathens who have never seen it, Auntie Mame is the story of a young boy who is sent off to live with his eccentric, larger-than-life Auntie Mame, who introduces him to ART! and GLAMOUR! and LIFE! It stars the incomparable Rosalind Russell, in (arguably) her best role. “I think it has a massive gay following,” says Bianca, “because I think a lot of gays WANT an Auntie Mame. I wish I’d had one. Luckily, I’ve had a lot of ‘Uncle Mames’ – not necessarily family, but people who gave me that insight into life, to show me theater, to show me art, to show me the world. Which is stuff that I keep with me. And now that I’m older, I try to the same with a lot of the queens around me. When I was on RuPaul’s Drag Race one of the queens asked me how I got so smart, and I thought ‘What the fuck kind of question is that?’ but it was just being cultured, and nowadays we’re so on our phones and we’re so into the internet that we don’t really know about other things. Before you had to read a book, before you actually had to GO to the movies, so I gave her a list of all the movies that someone else gave me. So it was nice to kind of pass the torch.”

Naked, Bloody Teen Claiming to be Satan Goes on Flakka-Fueled Rampage

Another gripping tale of Flakka abuse in Florida. The synthetic drug – which causes delusional and often aggressive “zombie-like” behavior – has been responsable for a number of outrageous arrests in recent months, from the tree-fucking man who claimed to be Thor to the man who impaled himself on a spiked fence trying to flee an imaginary mob. Now we have the arrest of a teenage girl in Melbourne, Florida who was naked, bloody, and claiming to be both God and Satan.

Via ClickOrlando:

Police spotted the tattooed teen coming out from behind a home, naked, covered in blood and screaming repeatedly, “I am God,” and “I am Satan.”

Police say she had earlier jumped through a glass window of an occupied home before running toward a car and striking it. She also punched a person outside of home as she continued to run around the area, reports show.

Officers used a Taser to stun the teen. Hours later at Holmes Regional Medical Center, the girl told officers that she took what she thought was LSD earlier in the evening but refused to tell officers where she got it.

“Whatever she was on, it was some mind-altering narcotic. The characteristics which exhibited are just like flakka. One of the characteristics is that it raises your inner core temperature…so that causes them to take their clothes off,” Lynch said.

Flakka: coming soon to a neighborhood near you!

274EEFC100000578-3026709-image-a-105_1428263047552

Flakka 101:

Flakka resembles a mix of crack cocaine and meth and it has a noticeably foul smell reported.  St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office special investigations Sgt. Rob Pettit said: ‘It has a strong odor like a sweaty sock. It’s pretty serious. We’re always trying to play catchup with the drug dealers as it is, and now here we are trying to get accustomed to finding yet another drug.’

Once ingested, the drug causes a feeling of euphoria, hallucinations and sometimes psychosis or apparent superhuman strength. The high lasts for a couple hours and users are left with a strong desire to use again.

During the high, users often experience something called “Excited Delerium” where the body goes into hyperthermia, generally a temperature of 105 degrees.

‘The individual becomes psychotic, they often rip off their clothes and run out into the street violently and have an adrenaline-like strength and police are called and it takes four or five officers to restrain them. Then once they are restrained, if they don’t receive immediate medical attention they can die.”
