#FlashForward: When The End of the World Comes, THIS Is The Video You’ll Want TO Watch

oliver_endoftheworld-800x430

On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, John Oliver premiered a sign-off video in anticipation of the end of the world. Apparently, CNN created a video years ago that it has held in reserve for the end times, with a note cautioning:

“Hold for release until end of the world confirmed.”

A brief clip from this video features a marching band playing Nearer My God To Thee, the song that played as the Titanic sank. (Well, there was a correction there too…) Anyway, according to Oliver, that marching band really won’t do so Last Weeks Tonight created their own “End of the world” video — narrated by Martin Sheen — with clips of things humanity should be proud of, including YouTube bloopers, a western saloon filled with cats, douchebag Kelsey Grammer falling off of a stage, and one “sick basketball shot.” Enjoy. You’re welcome, earth.

#Splitsville: Ariana Grande & Big Sean Break Up (Her’s Dad’s Instagram Warning Was Faked!)

Yesterday, Ariana Grande and Big Sean released a joint statement citing their packed touring schedules and time spent apart as the primary reason for the split, saying:

“They both care deeply for each other and remain close friends.”

In recent weeks especially, it looked like social media was actively trying to get them to break up. I posted what I’ve NOW learned was not a real screengrab of an Instagram post by Big Sean’s selfie accompanied by the caption:

“I give her that D… #Detroit.”

Underneath the photo an Instagram user who went by the handle “edward_butera,” which happens to be the name of Grande’s father, commented:

“that D. better be Detroit Sean.”

But according to Grande’s publicist, however, the entire Instagram photo was faked—a mock-up by an overly enthused hater. The person who commented underneath the photo claiming to be Grande’s father was “an imposter” who’d apparently jacked his Twitter profile picture for a fake Instagram account that has amassed some 23K followers —this according to Grande’s father. Yikes, that was hard to figure out. I linked to Big Sean’s Instagram and verified Ariana’s Dad’s name. So that surely had nothing to do with the split but I hate fake news. Maybe the split is fake too…? Think not.

#BornThisDay: Filthy Filmmaker, John Waters

waters slit

April 22, 1946- John Waters is undoubtedly one of my favorite people on the planet & one of my best reading experiences of the current decade was making my way through his memoir Role Models (2011), a collection of essays about his idols, some living, some dead, most dating back to his teenage years. Under my New Austerity Program, I borrowed this book from the library after making a pledge to check out books from my local branch rather than purchasing them in hardback from Portland’s Powell’s City Of Books. I loved Role Models so much; I purchased it anyway, even though I had already studied every page before returning the library edition.

Waters & I share a passion for Tennessee Williams. His started early in life, the nuns at his Baltimore Catholic school told Waters that if he saw a film written by Tennessee Williams he would go “straight to hell”, so naturally he headed for the library to find the “joyous, alarming, sexually confusing” writer who “saved my life”.

We also both have a thing for Johnny Mathis. In his Mathis essay, Waters remembers seeing a basement full of his friends French kissing to Johnny Mathis music. Waters explains:

“I knew then that not only did I want to be a teenager… I wanted to be an exaggeration of a teenager.” Note that Waters wanted to be a teen, as if being a teenager were not simply a matter of putting in the time, but a lifestyle. You could actually fail at Teenagerdom if you didn’t do it right.

One of my favorites of the essays in Role Models is about Mexican porn director Bobby Garcia, “who has blown hundreds & hundreds of really cute marines & lived to tell about it”, & whose favorite film turns out to be The Hours (2002). Garcia claims to have seen it at least 25 times.

Waters writing is stealthy engaging, full of devotion & delight. I often feel that writing for the screen must be the ultimate place that all writers dream of escaping, but here Waters is just the opposite: a filmmaker who writes a book that feels joyous & celebratory. He is allowed to be the fan he wants to be in Role Models.

Maxims from John Waters:

“Be interested in other people’s behavior & try to figure out why they did it. That’s what’s so interesting to me, & it’s not quite so obvious, & everybody has horror stories, everybody has secrets, everybody has things they’ve done that they’re still trying to explain why they did. So if you can understand why other people did it, then maybe you’ll be better with yourself, & you can be a happy neurotic, which is what I’m trying to be.”

“I write about being gay in a refined way. I’m trying to give it grace, a word I would never normally say. I also hate the word ‘journey’& ‘craft’ & ‘rigorous’ & ‘openly gay’, which always makes me laugh. Do they say, Openly heterosexual So-&-So is appearing tonight? & that phrase ‘practicing homosexual’. Like, if he keeps practicing, he’ll get it right. First of all, I never call myself a gay artist. History decides if you’re an artist. I certainly think I’m equally right for gay & straight people.”

“I don’t have a gay agenda, although I vote gay. If someone said they were against gay marriage, I wouldn’t vote for them. But I have no desire to mimic something Larry King does 8 times, & I like Larry King. Good for him! He’s helping us. I hope he gets married 10 more times. Just don’t make me do what you want to do.”

The self-dubbed “King Of Filth” has directed 17 transgressive films since Hag In A Black Leather Jacket in 1968, including those starring his muse DivinePink Flamingos (1972), Polyester (1981), Hairspray (1988), plus the fabulously demented Serial Mom (1994), & my Favorite John Waters flick, the rather sweet, even tender Pecker (1998).

Last year I very much enjoyed his funny book about his adventures as a hitchhiker, Carsick. In one chapter, Waters tells about being picking up by Myersville, Maryland’s 20 year old Republican councilman Brett Bidle, who thought Waters was a homeless man. Worried about Waters, he drives him to Ohio, 4 hours away. Later, Waters reconnects with Bidle in Denver. Bidle then drives him to Reno, 1000 miles west. Before moving on, Waters arranges for Bidle to use his San Francisco apartment.

I admire Waters’ assortment of friends which include would-be Presidential assassin Squeaky Fromme, bank robbing heiress Patricia Hearst, former porn actor Traci Lords, Kathleen Turner & Johnny Depp.

He says that making his kind of films is too expensive nowadays, it is rough getting financing. I hope he has one more in him. I would like John Waters to be a guest at one of my moonlit summer garden parties. He can bring anyone he wants as his guests.

RuPaul Got Breast Implants Through His Mouth! (aka the Top 5 Moments from This Week’s Good Work)

RuPaul, Sandra Vergara and Dr. Terry Dubrow were back last night on E! with another episode of Good Work.  We’re kind of obsessed with plastic surgery so this show really speaks to us.

Here are some highlights in case you missed it:

1. RuPaul Got Breast Implants Through His Mouth!

After discussing a breast implant technique which involves a small incision at the nipple and the placement of the implant underneath the muscle, RuPaul joked that he had his implants done through the mouth.  Apparently mouth implants look good because Ru’s tatas slay, mama!

RuPaul Implants

2. Holly Madison is very nice but doesn’t know a lot about insurance.

When challenged to guess the relative insured values of various celeb body parts (think J-Lo’s butt and Julia Roberts‘s smile), Holly got 4 out of 4 wrong!  To be fair, I got them all wrong too because, um, what does insuring your legs really mean anyway?  Side note: I feel like Holly would be fun to hang out with and want to have dinner with her…who’s with me?

Holly Madison

3. RuPaul teaches us the origin of the word “beaver.”

Ru shows us a pubic wig called a merkin and then we learn that merkins used to be made out of beaver pelts!  Who knew?  I’m going to use this piece of trivia at a cocktail party soon.  This show is basically Reading Rainbow for adults, right? #Edumacation

Good Work Beaver

4. Nails.  Long nails.  Nails like you’ve never seen.

Whoa-em-gee these nails are crazy, but also kind of fascinating.  She holds the Guinness World Record for the longest nails and in general Chris Walton is actually lovely.  She can even text with her knuckles!  Fitting into gloves is so overrated anyway.

5. Secrets of a Whiter Smile

Forget whitening toothpaste, apparently it’s all about brushing your teeth with activated charcoal.  Next time you light a fire, clean it up with your mouth!

Rihanna‘s eighth studio album is set to debut this year, and her publicity machine seems to be gearing up with covers galore —the latest being V magazine’s 95th issue. She was shot by Steven Klein looking sixties-sultry sex kitten in just bikini bottoms. Styled by Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, the shoot will no doubt be even more revealing. V has become the go-to mag for pop-star pinups with Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Nicki Minaj, and even ol’ Madge posing. For more pics go here.

St Thomas Aquinas College

St Thomas Aquinas College

The Gender and Sexuality Alliance Club at St Thomas Aquinas College in New York wanted to put on a drag show featuring students, with a “professional” queen hosting. The initial application and funding was approved, but later refused by school officials. University president Margaret Mary Fitzpatrick (is there a more Catholic name than that!?) told The Journal News:

“The question came to me – what would I think of a drag show on campus? I thought there could be unintended consequences from a drag show. I was nervous about it.”

She suggested instead they hold an educational event that discussed the history and culture of drag, and its relevance to LGBT communities. Students and staff have made it clear that the school is welcoming to LGBT people and they’ve held successful gender and sexuality related events before.

“I thought that that would then create a dignified environment for people to learn about drag and the history. And so, if there is a drag show in the future, there would be positive consequences.”

Professor Robert Trawick said:

“We have openly gay students, we have openly gay faculty. For the majority of students, on LGBT issues, it’s just not controversial to them. I hope that we can find a way to express our Catholic heritage that is respectful of its traditions and, at the same time, open to free inquiry. I believe that best represents the tradition of Thomas Aquinas.”

Well, I hope they eventually get to have their drag show and I’d love to audit that class on Drag herstory! Maybe Lady Bunny could bring Drag U to THEM? (Photo, Linda Simpson/ Drag Explosion; via Pink News)

#LGBT: Pennsylvania High School Students Protest #DayOfSilence With An “Anti-Gay Day”

Anti-Gay-Day-0013307969622

Anti-Gay-Day-2-x400_0

Students around the country each year participate in a Day of Silence to raise attention around anti-LGBTQ bullying in schools, but some assholes at McGuffey High School in Pennsylvania took decided to host their own event the day before, calling it “Anti-Gay Day.” Students wore flannel and wrote “anti-gay” on their hands to show their hatred for LGBTQ classmates and hung posters on the lockers of LGBTQ kids, whether out or just “suspected” and hassled them in the halls.

It didn’t stop there though. The organizers continued the harassment by wearing red or orange the next day, and have reportedly circulated a “lynch list” with the names of students to target; a string of events are also planned for this week. In the meantime, the school is trying to get to the bottom of it. Superintendent, Dr. Erica Kolat said in a statement:

“Yesterday afternoon, April 16, 2015, allegations of harassment were brought to the attention of our administration. McGuffey School District, along with school police officers, continue to investigate all allegations. We will follow our Student Code of Conduct, and file legal citations, as warranted. We resolve to ensure that all children can grow and learn in a safe, supportive environment free from discrimination.”

But students say not enough is being done to prevent the sustained discrimination, and many are fearful about returning to school…

“It’s sad to me. It’s a high school. We should feel safe here. We don’t, and it’s starting to get worse.”

I went through this in Texas myself, years ago as many gay kids have… this organized “protest” though is worse because one imagines teachers are in some way complicit. Otherwise, kids with “anti-gay” written on their hands would be hauled down to the principals office an suspended. 2015 in America? Sad.

#LGBT: Ex-Bully Comes Out As Gay & Apologizes To His Victim

0

AnonymousHead

A antigay middle school bully who is HIMSELF is gay just posted an apology letter online. This excuses nothing, but anyone who stands up to break a cycle of hate deserves a little credit. As with many bullies, it seems clear that he was trained to be a bully by his homophobic father who instilled fear in him in whole life. Here’s his story…

James posted this message:

“Hello everyone, for starters let me introduce myself, my name is James and back in middle school I used to bully other students who seemed feminine and were openly gay, I was the typical Christian homophobic bully. I grew up in a completely Christian household, my father would often post anti-gay/ anti-democrat images on his Facebook, print them off and put them on the fridge. He would constantly teach me that homosexuality was wrong, which I guess is what got that sort of thought into my mind.

Well in middle school there was this one student who we’ll call ‘Nate’.

“For the things I’ve said to Nate, I wanted to apologies. I would constantly call him a ‘fag’ ‘faggot’, ‘gay boy’, ‘queer’, and other things. He did nothing wrong to me, and yet I still felt so afraid of him that I resorted to insults. Sadly, nowadays I have no way of contacting him, he doesn’t use Facebook, he doesn’t live near me, and we’re both probably no longer in school. For everyone out there who’s been in either my situation, or Nate’s situation, I’m sorry.

If you’re in my situation, please don’t resort to verbal abuse over things that scare/ frighten you, be strong, talk to people in a civilized manner, and open up to them. I know I’m gay, I think I bullied Nate so much because I was afraid of being like this, I wanted to be the strong straight kid my dad always wanted.
If you’re in Nate’s situation, please stay strong. You didn’t do anything wrong, those who bully you or insult you are most often then not having an identity crisis. I’m here for you now, and want to know that you’re perfect just the way you are.

Again, I can’t apologize to Nate now, but if I could I would want to tell him this;

‘I’m sorry for all the verbal harassment I put you through, the truth is I always thought you were pretty cool and sort of attractive, and that frustrated me. You were always the stronger one between us both, you were proud to be you and always kept your head held high. Fight on, and live an amazingly happy life with whomever you love. My thoughts are with you, please… please stay strong.'”

…and to all you bullies out there, we’ve got your number. A Shakespearian phrase we learned in school comes to mind:

“The lady doth protest too much.”

Age of Ultron Primer: A Crash Course On Every Marvel Movie

marvel-cinematic-universe-poster

Iron Man came out in 2008 and its success wasn’t exactly a sure thing. But it WAS a big hit and it spawned a massive, interconnected, industry-changing monster; “The Marvel Cinematic Universe“. Avengers: Age of Ultron is the 11th movie set in the MCU, and it includes stories of the other Avengers — the Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man films. The MCU includes three TV series (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, and Daredevil), a ton of tie-in comics (31 issues in total!), not to mention the five short films available only on home-video releases of movies.

FYI, you kinda need to have SOME knowledge of almost all of that MCU in order to get Age of Ultron. New York magazine put together a cheat video that pretty much gives you all you need to know. In the end, they all fight the bad guys, things blow up and there’s enough of a cliff-hanger to get you (and/or your kids and their kids) coming back for more. Watch.

#BornThisDay: Fashion Designer, Halston

Halston with Elizabeth Taylor and Bianca Jagger at Studio 54

Halston with Elizabeth Taylor and Bianca Jagger at Studio 54

April 23, 1932- Roy Halston Frowick, or as I called him, Halston, was the iconic clothing designer of the 1970s & a friend to Jackie O, Bianca Jagger, Liza, Anjelica Huston, Lauren Bacall, Elizabeth Taylor, & of course, Andy Warhol, but he always managed to somehow ignore me at Studio 54.

A Midwesterner, he began his career as a milliner, eventually gaining enough recognition to be asked to design that pillbox hat Jacqueline Kennedy wore to the 1961 Presidential inauguration. Halston then moved to designing Haute Couture. Newsweek magazine named Halston “the premier fashion designer of the USA”. Halston was one of the first international fashion superstars & very possibly the most talented designer America has ever had.

He was the first American designer to perceive the potential of licensing himself & becoming a single name brand. The Halston influence went beyond style to reshape the business end of fashion. Through his licensing agreement with retailer JC Penney, his designs were accessible to ladies at most income levels & tastes. Although this practice is common today, it was a controversial move at the time & cost him some of those couture customers.

No American designer had such a strong impact on the re-defining of women’s clothing. Halston’s minimal style, use of luxurious materials such as cashmere & ultrasuede, & his thoroughly modern interpretation of classics, even his posse of models dubbed The Halstonettes,  all defined the look of the 1970s.

Although he enjoyed enormous success in business & design, Halston liked to party, as we all did during those years, but his drug use deepened & a failure to meet deadline demands undermined his progress & profit. In 1984 he was fired from his own company & lost the right to design & sell clothes under his own name.

Halston was diagnosed with HIV in 1988. He left this world because of HIV related cancer in San Francisco, in the spring of 1990. Liza has never quite recovered.

Despite never having been invited to his table at Studio 54 (I found my coke from other generous party-goers), I do have a Halston connection. I wore a little red Halston number to Portland’s Red Dress Party in spring 2007. I looked super chic.

In the Sister Sledge disco tune He’s The Greatest Dancer, Halston is memorably mentioned in a description of a well-dressed man:

“Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci, he looks like a still, the man is dressed to kill’.

Halston has been mentioned in other songs, films & TV shows, usually as the criterion for a certain kind of cultured, cosmopolitan style. Check out the documentary Ultrasudue: The Search For Halston (2012). Watch.

Sandra Bullock was named the “World’s Most Beautiful” women but Laverne Cox is getting plenty of attention too for being included in People magazine’s annual issue. The trans actress, has been showcased on the cover of Time magazine last year and was at the Time 100 on Tuesday night. She was also recently photographed nude for Allure magazine. People says:

“The actress has left a big impression on Hollywood (and America) in a very short amount of time. Cox’s skillful performance as Sophia on Orange Is the New Black and her work advocating for transgender women make her one of our boldest beauties yet.”

Others in the issue include Vanessa Hudgens, Ariana Grande, Shay Mitchell and Taraji P. Henson.

It seems that Scooby and friends are taking a trip to Detroit Rock City this summer. Scooby-Doo! And Kiss: Rock and Roll Mystery is an upcoming summer full-length film that has an animated KISS calling up Scooby-Doo, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Fred of Mystery Inc. to solve the mystery of the Crimson Witch who is disrupting a Halloween concert and is out to destroy the planet. Huh? The guest voices will include Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, Darius Rucker, Garry Marshall and Penny Marshall. Huh? In addition to six KISS tracks, the movie will feature a new song from the band. Earlier this month, KISS started their 40th anniversary tour (!) which already hit North America last year. I am SO confused by this news…. is there a demo for combining Scooby-Do with KISS? I got it! It must be the KISS Army and their grandkids? Rock and Roll Mystery is available for download on July 10th. Somehow, I think I can wait…

The Muppets Will Grow Up In Upcoming ABC Reboot

muppets

The Muppets are coming back to television. This time, though, they won’t be doing a weekly variety show. No, that’s cutesy kids’ stuff. Get ready for a more adult-like version of the Muppets, which will allow us to see Kermit and the gang in a whole new light.

According to ABC:

“The Muppets return to prime time with a contemporary, documentary-style show that—for the first time ever—will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires; a more adult Muppet show, for kids of all ages.”

While the mock-documentary format has worked well for several TV shows, I’m not sure how I feel about the Muppets getting this type of treatment. What type of adult situations are they going to be put through? Miss Piggy coping with menopausal hot flashes? Kermit on Viagra? Fozzie in rehab? Gonzo and Camilla the Chicken going to couples therapy???

No word on when this new grown-up version of the Muppets will premiere, but fingers crossed it doesn’t take the fun out of these lovable characters, or even worse, ruin our childhoods.

#MediaFrenzy: Bruce Jenner’s Impending ABC Interview Has the World Press Going Crazy!

What’s a bigger story, Bruce Jenner or a new royal baby about to drop? I’d say Jenner has the edge right now –at least in THIS country. The media (and the paps, especially) are losing their minds over a story they know is out there but just can’t quite get to yet. The Daily News ran a cover with pics of Bruce Jenner in what appears to be a striped maxi dress having a cigarette on HIS OWN PROPERTY. It’s not that the paps haven’t stalked him (and every Kardashian or Jenner) for the last decade… but this might be a bridge TOO far, as Jenner is now apparently suing the agency for invading his privacy. And asking celebs for their reaction to the story that no one knows the details of yet, seems to be OK, as well. Transgender actress Laverne Cox was queried on the red carpet for the Time 100 party in New York the other night to which she replied;

“I’m going to wait and see what Bruce has to say and then I’ll decide if there’s anything worth commenting on…”

A sensible response, right? Access Hollywood asked David Arquette what the Kardashians might be going through, being that he has a transgender sibling, Alexis Arquette. His response had him fumbling for the right words, saying Jenner…

“seems like a really sweet guy, uh girl…”

Billy Bush said later that after 9 years, this confusion is still happening with David’s own sibling, so we ALL need to have a little bit more patience. Can I get an amen? We’ll all know all the details soon enough. The 2-hour Diane Sawyer interview that the whole WORLD will be watching airs tomorrow night on ABC.

#NSFW #TBT: The Inside Story of Mark Wahlberg’s Gigantic “Boogie Nights” Penis

boogie-nights

NSFW: As Paul Thomas Anderson said, seeing Dirk Diggler’s gigantic penis in Boogie Nights is like seeing the shark in Jaws: It’s more powerful if you have to wait for it. The oral history (pun intended) of Boogie Nights, we now know exactly how they made the peen prosthetic. The model itself was made of plaster, with a little public wig specially made to match Mark Wahlberg‘s hair color. They also created a special bulge for his pants…

“…a woman’s stocking knee filled with birdseed.”

After they tested some prototypes, the final penis ended up being a little smaller than Diggler’s oft-mentioned 13 inches. Special-makeup-effects coordinator Howard Berger said;

“We sculpted a version that was 12 inches long, and we tested it, and it was just way too big. It looked like a weird monster penis.”

The version seen at the end of the film was seven inches and in the words of editor Dylan Tichenor;

“It was the size of John Holmes‘ penis, but Mark is like eight or nine inches shorter than John Holmes.”

To get reactions from the rest of the cast, Wahlberg wore the prosthetic even when it wasn’t needed onscreen, and everyone involved still has high praise for his performance. Director of photography Robert Elswit said;

“What Mark Wahlberg did in that movie was all sorts of things that he had to absolutely commit to. He had to put a prosthetic cock on his own cock, you know what I mean? That’s asking an awful lot of an actor, honestly.”

As an homage, here’s THE scene from Boogie Night‘s with THE reveal and the bonus of Red Hot Chili Pepper‘s Give It Away. Enjoy.
