sherry vine

NYC drag icon and YouTube viral video star Sherry Vine has teamed-up with gay dating app/site Scruff- the place to meet boys, bears, wolves, otters and other assorted feral fare, for her latest parody video Living For Scruff. Loosely based on Madonna’s latest hit Living For Love, Sherry’s version is a dream-like sequence (something must have been on that lens…lol) where she’s shaved-off smooth twink boys, and embraced her pognophilia. “Refrain from trimming for a month or two”, says Vine. “Let it grow like a Hasidic Jew!” Check it out below, and download the Scruff app. (Director Francis Legge)

#BornThisDay: Singer, Dusty Springfield

April 16, 1939, She is one of the most important recording artists of my long lifetime. Her music has moved me, thrilled me & comforted me for 55 years.  For me, the album Dusty In Memphis is a perfect LP, I cannot fault a single note, every selection is delicious, & it is on my list of Top 10 Albums of all time.

Dusty Springfield was an unlikely Gay Icon. Born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien in London just a month before that start of WW2. She started life as an Irish Catholic schoolgirl, yet she gained stardom as a sultry singer of soul, the “white girl singing black music.”

Her love for other women was forbidden in the Britain at the time, illegal actually. Like most of the great gay artists in history, there were innovative ways of maneuvering around expectations of the heterosexual majority while covertly conveying the constrained emotions in the work. Springfield’s gayness is the core of the melancholy & vulnerability that she brings her recordings. Her songs go straight to my heart: How Can I Be Sure, All Cried Out, I Close My Eyes & Count To 10, The Look Of Love, You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me, & my personal favorite, her devastating version of I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself. She does more than sell the song; she inhabits & makes them her own in the way that only the true great artists can do.

With a strong, almost masculine countenance but a feminine style, she has real appeal to gay people. She studied & copied drag acts, creating an image confusing to a lot of the 1960s listening public. In the press, her image was vigorously protected against her gayness. The press releases stressed Springfield’s Catholic faith & middle-class roots. The fact she was living with a fellow singer, Norma Tanega, was just conveniently overlooked. After she & Tanega split up, there was always another woman keeping Springfield’s bed warm.

She invented a look for herself which became iconic, with tall beehive hair & thick, dark eye make-up. Her style was copied by fellow recording artists of the time, plus many teenage girls, & drag queens. Her career left a lasting legacy on modern fashion.

Springfield became an expert in all aspects of music recording. The male dominated industry resented a young woman who seemed to know it all. She had a sharp ear for quality & a perfectionist approach. Women were simply not allowed to use the mixing equipment or to commandeer the production booth. She gained a reputation for being difficult & eccentric. Her headstrong personality & working knowledge of the technical aspects of recording did not endear Springfield to a male dominated professional musical community, but she certainly enchanting her fans.

In 1964, while on tour in South Africa, & with no prior interest in politics, Springfield found it abhorrent that it was illegal to perform a concert to a mixed audience. But there was a loophole in the law that allowed live performances for mixed-race audiences as long as they were in a movie theatre. Springfield booked the biggest film house she could find & played to a large black & white audience. When she arrived back at her hotel, Springfield & entourage were placed under arrest & deported. Back home the public loved her for it. She was hailed as an anti-apartheid hero.

Springfield was at her apex in the mid-1960s. She had hit albums, & her own TV show. She was credited as the woman who brought Motown to the UK. But in the early 1970s, when I was digging her the most, the kids who bought records, pushed against Springfield’s style, preferring songs with a strong political message. Her love songs & throaty jazzy voice began to lose popularity.

At a loss, Springfield was sucked into a spiral of drink, drugs & the parties. She abused a variety of substances on a daily basis. The pressure of a closeted life manifested itself in depression & a desire to avoid the spotlight. An album she had started to record for Atlantic Records was shelved due to her ‘poor mental health’.

Ashamed by the abandoned album, Springfield moved to LA & dropped deeper drugs & booze. She spent most of the 1970s living late nights of partying. She sometimes woke up in a hospital.

Late in the 1970s, Springfield had begun to speak openly about being bisexual, although she was never known to ever have had a boyfriend. Her bad publicity devastated Springfield. She came out to her parents, but far from outraged, they did not take her seriously. This hurt her even more deeply.

In the 1980s, Springfield’s drug abuse was at an all-time high. She continued to have short-lived affairs. Her recordings made little impact & had low sales. Springfield was constantly between rehab or the hospital.

Salvation came in 1987 when her longtime fans, Pet Shop Boys, asked her to collaborate. The resulting record, What Have I Done to Deserve This?, was a worldwide smash hit & one of my favorite singles of all time. Suddenly, the fading singer was among the smart set once more. Pet Shop Boys produced an album for her. At 48 years old, her life started to get better. She gave up drugs & partying. More hits singles followed.

In 1994, just as Springfield’s career was back on track & a new generation was embracing her sound, she was diagnosed with that damn cancer. She received treatment, but remission was short lived. She spent her final years fighting against a second bout of cancer. Springfield moved in with her lifelong friend & back-up singer, Simon Bell, who took care of her.

On New Year’s Day 1999, Springfield was awarded an Order Of The British Empire for her contribution to music. Too sick to make the ceremony, her longtime manager, with permission from Queen Elizabeth 2, picked up the award on her behalf. It was carried directly to Springfield & given to her in front of a small gathering of friends, & her Oncologist. On the very day when Springfield would have received the award, she lost her battle against cancer. Her memorial was attended by thousands of mourners including Elvis Costello, Lulu, Elton John & Pet Shop Boys. 10 days after her death, her friend Sir Elton inducted Springfield into the Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame, stating:

“She was the greatest white singer of all time”.

This video resurfaced on Reddit yesterday and I kept seeing it pop up all day. I tried to avoid it but it was totally UNAVOIDABLE. First of all, were commercials EVER 4 minutes long? This is more like a brainwash/training video that indoctrinates us into Sizzler, the cult. But really, it’s a “restaurant inside a restaurant” inside in a commercial inside the American Dream…

“Sizzler is the choice of America. Sizzler gives you choices every day. That’s the Sizzler way. Get a little freedom in your life.”

Just watch.

“Going through life, you try to cover and hide, but it doesn’t really work.”

Laverne Cox, 30, at first turned down Allure‘s request to pose nude…. but she wanted these pictures for herself, too:

“I said no initially, thought about it, and said no again. But I’m a black transgender woman. I felt this could be really powerful for the communities that I represent. Black women are not often told that we’re beautiful unless we align with certain standards. Trans women certainly are not told we’re beautiful. Seeing a black transgender woman embracing and loving everything about herself might be inspiring to some other folks. There’s beauty in the things we think are imperfect. That sounds very cliché, but it’s true. I honestly just want to make myself happy most, and if other people like it, then that’s great. If they don’t, then I’m still happy.”

Well, beautiful is beautiful. (Photo, Norman Jean Roy ; via Allure)

No, I don’t subscribe to Behind the Times… I know the video for Froot has been out a few months but Marina and the Diamonds new album of the same name is only out a few weeks. We’ve all had an overdose of Primadonna & How To Be A Heartbreaker and this one is just as infectious. Marina and her D’s just performed this on The Late Show and I got re-infected. Watch… and then hear it playing all day in your head.

#BornThisDay: Writer, Thornton Wilder

April 17, 1897- One of my favorite roles was Horace Vandergelder in Hello, Dolly! at Seattle Civic Light Opera in the late 1980s. I also used a funny & grouchy monologue by the same character from the source material, The Matchmaker, for auditions for several years. It was a part that I was born to play: crusty, irascible, testy, vinegary, bearish, & unable to suffer fools gladly.

The Hello, Dolly! history is long, picturesque, & quite gay. John Oxenford‘s short farce A Day Well Spent, from 1835, had been made into a full length play entitled Einen Jux Will Er Sich Machen by Austrian playwright Johann Nestroy in 1842. Both writers were homosexual. In 1938, Thornton Wilder Americanized the Nestroy version & changed it into The Merchant Of Yonkers. The Broadway production was a dismal failure, running for just 39 performances.

17 years later, director Tyrone Guthrie (not gay) commissioned a new version of the play for Ruth Gordon. Wilder extensively rewrote the piece & made the minor character of Dolly Gallagher Levi, a widow who brokers marriages & other transactions, the leading role. Wilder named this play- The Matchmaker. Gordon would win the Tony Award for playing the title role.

The 1958 film version starred Shirley Booth, Anthony Perkins (gay), Shirley MacLaine (loved by gays), Paul Ford, & Robert Morse.

In 1964, The Matchmaker became the Tony Award (what is gayer than a Tony Award?) winning musical Hello, Dolly! with a score by the very gay Jerry Herman & starring gay icon Carol Channing. A film version of the musical was released in 1969 starring Barbra Streisand (gays seem to really like her) in the lead role. Tom Stoppard (not gay, but very talented & smart) reworked the story again, in 1981, as the farce On The Razzle.

Thornton Wilder’s version is my favorite. He won 3 Pulitzer Prizes: for the novel The Bridge Of San Luis Rey, for the classic high school favorite Our Town, & his satire of the stage The Skin Of Our Teeth, of which I once portrayed a dinosaur in a production.

Our Town, in case your high school passed on producing it, is best known for its bare set, its plain folksy dialogue, & its simplistic lessons about life, yet when a dead Emily Gibbs asks the Stage Manager if anyone appreciates the daily mundane aspects of life, the Stage Manager answers with the devastating: “Poets, maybe”. 75 years after it debuted, it is believed that not a day goes by that Our Town is not performed somewhere in the world.

The great theme of Wilder’s works: the lack of awareness about the daily comforts & tribulations of the short time we have on our pretty, spinning, blue orb. Put down that cellphone & recognize the beauty of all those tiny moments in life that are being passed by.

The Skin of Our Teeth, highly avant-garde when it was first produced during WW2, is the satirical story of The Antrobus Family battling the Ice Age & other apocalypses. The play has never been more relevant than now when we face climate change, terrorism & religious fundamentalism. The human race might survive global freezing, but maybe not global warming, guns, & Ted Cruz.

Wilder never publically addressed being gay, but his homosexuality was a well-known secret in the theatre circles. His longtime lover was Samuel Steward who wrote very famous & well received, for the time, gay erotica under the moniker Phil Andros. Wilder was introduced to Steward by their mutual friend Gertrude Stein.

Wilder had cool friends. He hung out with the Dorothy Parker, Willa Cather, Harpo Marx, Tallulah Bankhead, & Montgomery Clift. I would like to have been at that party. Wilder left this world in 1975. He was 78 years old.

“Money is like manure; it’s not worth a thing unless it’s spread around encouraging young things to grow.” –The Matchmaker

She was rich since the day she was born and she was on TV before she could drive, both of which she had nothing to do with. But she was a model by time she turned 18, which WAS her doing, and now Kendall Jenner is one of the most followed, most photographed women in the world. There was a moment when her modeling aspirations seemed another reality-TV plot device but then Kendall went and built a actual career —one that she is considered perfectly suited to, by those who know.

“I didn’t do it because I felt like I had to prove something. This is a career that I’ve always wanted. And I mean, what else would I be doing? I probably would have gone to school to get the degree to go to work, when work was already there.”

#LGBT: More “Faith-Based” Gay Discrimination Introduced By @RepHartzler Into The U.S. House

Rep. Vicky Hartzler (a Republican. 202-225-2876 @rephartzler) introduced a resolution in the U.S. House this Tuesday asking Congress to disapprove a bill passed by the D.C. City Council (and signed by Mayor Muriel Bowser) that would allow discrimination against LGBT students attending religious schools. Reps. Bill Flores and Mark Meadows (both Republicans) signed on as co-sponsors to the resolution: Hartzler said in a statement released on Wednesday:

“By passing this act, the D.C. City Council has infringed on the fundamental right of religious freedom. No faith-based school should be forced to endorse, fund, or sponsor groups that do not share their beliefs.”

Hartzler refers to the D.C. Human Rights Amendment Act of 2014, which was passed by the Council in December and signed by Bowser in January which calls for repealing a provision in the D.C. Human Rights Act enacted by Congress in 1989 that exempts religious schools from having to comply with the Human Rights Act’s ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Under congressional procedures for passing disapproval resolutions, both the House and Senate must pass and POTUS must sign during a 30 legislative day congressional review period. That period ends on May 1. Ian Thompson, legislative rep for the ACLU, which is lobbying against the resolutions says…

“Everyone knows they will not succeed in this process because President Obama is not going to sign these resolutions.”

Thompson and other opponents of these resolutions says that supporters of the resolutions most likely are using them to grandstand and get support for their ultimate objective, which is to kill the bills by persuading Congress to attach an amendment to the D.C. appropriations bill blocking the city from implementing the two measures. This has a chance of succeeding, as President Obama would be less likely to veto the city’s appropriations bill. The appropriations or “budget” bill is needed to fund all of the city’s agencies and programs – even though most of the funds come from D.C. taxpayers.

All of this is more right-wing road-blocks set up by the GOP and their do-nothing ways. I came across this meme that sums up their strategy and thesis very nicely, I think. It has nothing to do with this bill and EVERYTHING to do with the reality of 2015. Post a message on Twitter (her handle is in the headline already) or call Rep. Vicki Hartzler and let her know how you feel. 202-225-2876. @rephartzler

GLAAD’s Report On 2014’s Most Offensive Films To LGBT Audiences

$
0
0

In a year where Hollywood seemed to be earning its reputation as one of the most progressive and gay-friendly industries on earth, GLAAD’s latest Studio Responsibility Index makes a case that 2014 didn’t exactly solve homophobia in Hollywood…. GLAAD report says that only 17.5% of the major studio releases included identified lesbian, gay, or bisexual characters… that’s an improvement over last year, there’s still a way to go. Even worse than a film with no LGBT characters are films with what GLAAD calls…

“outright defamatory representations.”

Their Observations & Recommendations section singles out these 5 films as the worst offenders:

552ebe1016d0331d2b4d7c98_b-glaad-offensive-movies-exodus-gods-and-kings
Exodus, Gods and Kings: GLAAD says that the film features “one of the year’s worst depictions of a gay character.” Ben Mendelsohn’s Viceroy Hegep is the vicious overseer when caught embezzling, offers Moses sexual favors in exchange for his silence. GLAAD calls his character…

“overtly effeminate, vain, greedy, inhumane, and duplicitous” and concludes that “this ugly, spiteful caricature harkens back to a time when Hollywood routinely depicted L.G.B.T. people as abhorrent villains the audience would naturally root against. For anyone who thinks those days are behind us, Hegep and his pronounced lisp prove that isn’t the case.”

552ebe1916d0331d2b4d7cf3_b-glaad-offensive-movies-top-five
Top Five: Chris Rock and Rosario Dawson’s characters discover that Dawson’s boyfriend is secretly gay or bisexual. In a series of flashbacks, Dawson’s Chelsea recalls her boyfriends fondness for anal pleasure and how she once vindictively took revenge on him for it. That sequence was called out by both GLAAD and film critics for implying that anal sex is wrong and deserving of punishment. GLAAD goes on to point out that elsewhere in Top Five, Rock, who wrote and directed the film, speaks pointedly about the power of racial depiction on film:

“More than one film critic pointed out how disappointing and hypocritical the scene was in a film that asked the audience to think critically about the movies they watch.”

552ebe1616d0331d2b4d7cd1_b-glaad-offensive-movies-horrible-bosses-2
Horrible Bosses 2: Jennifer Aniston extends her harassment from Charlie Day’s character to his wife. GLAAD points out that …

“many of Julia’s most loathsome personality traits fall in line with some of the worst stereotypes about bisexual people. . . . The film also contains a number of jokes about the three men pretending to be gay or simulating sex acts with each other, which, despite the insertion of character lines asserting their acceptance of gay people, widely miss the mark.”

552ebe1916d0331d2b4d7cfc_b-glaad-offensive-movies-transformers-age-of-extinction
Transformers: Age of Extinction: GLAAD’s report takes director Michael Bay’s entire career into consideration when examining the most recent Transformers. Singling out a character with a “limp-wristed handshake” who Mark Wahlberg’s character proceeds to “inexplicably intimidate and bully, calling him ‘snakeballs.’” In the context of Bay’s body of work, the report concludes:

“The best that can be said is that at least in this film Bay doesn’t have anyone physically beat the gay-coded character the way he did in 2013’s Pain and Gain. When it’s an improvement for a director’s film to not feature an anti-gay assault, that’s a tragically low bar.”

552ebe15fd1bd16507197ec7_b-glaad-offensive-movies-the-other-woman
The Other Woman: Hollywood is still lagging behind when it comes to representation of transgender characters. The report is particularly punishing when it comes to a scene in The Other Woman involving a bearded, hairy-chested man in women’s clothing. The report explains:

“If Dana is meant to be the filmmakers’ sophomoric approximation of a transgender woman, it’s far and away one of the most offensive representations we’ve seen in years. If instead, Dana is a man who agreed to dress in drag and harass the cheating man as part of the revenge plot, then it’s meant to be a gross-out moment steeped in gay-panic and trans-panic. Because of how cartoonish Dana appears, we’re inclined to assume it’s the latter, but it’s a defamatory scene either way.”

Ioan Gruffudd seen at Craig's restaurant in West Hollywood

Ioan Gruffudd seen at Craig‘s restaurant in West Hollywood. Umf. He’s so wonderful. Did I ever tell you about the time I had dinner with him? The year was 1998. He was still most famous for Titanic (where you’ll recall he played Fifth Officer Harold Lowe). He had just been at a table read for Party Monster in London, where he read the part of Michael. Which was weird. Anyway, that night, he sat next to me at dinner and I FELL IN LOVE. Omg. What a guy. What a life story. Perfect gentleman! KNEW he was going to be a star! I think I’ll be his biggest fan FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.

Jackie Mason seen out and about in Manhattan, NYC

And finally Jackie Mason, yes JACKIE MASON, seen out and about in Manhattan, NYC. Has he… had A LOT of work done recently? I mean, the man has been old since the ’70s – and suddenly he looks like a supermodel! The full, pouty lips, the tousled hair, the taut skin… and those CHEEKBONES! OY! You could grate cheese with them! Mazel, Jackie!
