#QuoteUnquote: Francis Bean Cobain On Dad, Kurt

A few years ago, Frances Bean Cobain worked as an intern in the New York offices of Rolling Stone. (I used to work on the same floor, years ago in the Us Weekly offices.) Frances is the daughter of the late Kurt Cobain and an executive producer of the new HBO documentary, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck She talked about her father, which rarely ever happens, and was shot by David LaChapelle for their current issue:

What was it like hearing his voice?
I’ve been hearing his voice forever, through his music.

I was thinking more of his speaking voice.
His speaking voice is sort of similar to mine. It’s sort of a monotone. The depth to it is similar to the way I speak. I don’t know what the fuck that is. I wasn’t even talking when he was around.

Don’t mistake the power of genes.
It’s very weird how genes are. Dave [Grohl], Krist [Novoselic] and Pat [Smear] came over to a house where I was living. It was the first time [the ex-Nirvana members] had been together in a long time. And they had what I call the “K. C. Jeebies,” which is when they see me, they see Kurt. They look at me, and you can see they’re looking at a ghost. They were all getting the K. C. Jeebies hardcore. Dave said, “She is so much like Kurt.” They were all talking amongst themselves, rehashing old stories I’d heard a million times. I was sitting in a chair, chain-smoking, looking down like this [affects total boredom]. And they went, “You are doing exactly what your father would have done.”

But I was glad they came over [smiles[. It was a cool experience, like having a Nirvana reunion minus one. Except for his spawn.

The real Marlene Dietrich

She was a superstar before the term was invented. Marlene Dietrich continues to inspire generations of and in fact, one current pop superstar transformed into the late German chanteuse for a magazine spread last week —and is practically unrecognizable. They posted on Twitter:

Madonna‘s latest unwitting smooching partner, Drake on stage at Coachella didn’t seem too happy about it. His reaction – coming up for air and wiping his mouth is pretty funny. She didn’t appear to see it at the time, but I’ll bet she was as embarrassed as he was. Maybe not. I love her shamelessness. Yes. We know. #BitchYourMadonna

The Horror: Watch the Evolution of Prince William’s Looks

I’m warning you: this is a hard one to take. Our golden prince. Our bonnie young bae. Brought down by the scourge of baldness. Prince William had such promise in the early years of the century. From 2000-2002 there was no finer royal. From 2003-2005, there was still hope. Then something seemed to happen. His nose grew. His teeth grew. His entire face got more… how shall we say… horsey. He started to resemble his father (GOD FORBID). Then, suddenly, in an unexpected coup de vieux, his hairline receded… and the rest is history. Watch it all happen in horrific fast motion.

I mean: Don’t get me wrong. I still would. OF COURSE I WOULD.

Must-Watch: Perfume Genius Performs “Queen” at Coachella 2015

Now, personally I would rather you stick oyster forks up my bum than spend an hour at Coachella, but that’s just me. Watching Perfume Genius aka Matt Hadreas, however, might be the one thing that could get me there. Here he is gyrating onstage in fishnets, red lipstick, and a gender-fluid tee while singing his seminal hit “Queen” – and it’s magnificent.

Jon & John’s Extra Lap Recap, RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 7, Episode 7: Snatch Game!

“Jon and John are so gay, that instead of recapping this week’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, they just went ahead and _______(ed) it!” Do we have a match! Watch as Jon and I provide clues, answers and just lots of rude commentary about this week’s big bodacious episode. SPOILER ALERT: We will of course tell you who got sent home so please go and watch the full episode first (available at LogoTV.com).

SPOILER ALERT, AGAIN: In the photos below we’re going to reveal who some of the queens impersonated on Snatch Game, so if you don’t want to know that, don’t go any further.

707-1grab-John-Jon-Snatch-anus-560px
When in doubt, go with “Anus!” (Yes, everything I know I learned from Alaska. AND Lady Bunny.)

Were there any Snatch-tastic surprises? Hmmmm… I’d say Kennedy‘s choice was totally unexpected — and she was pretty damn great. But so was Pearl (She’s funny!) and even Violet… Weirdly, Violet doing Alyssa Edwards on Snatch Game was way more successful than when Alyssa herself was on Snatch Game doing Katy Perry. And basically, anything that gets us more Alyssa in our lives — even a fake one — is wonderful. And you can get more Alyssa yourself by watching “Alyssa’s Secret,” too. Plug, plug.)

707-John-Jon-Alyssa-Violet-click-Snatch-560pxYou gotta get up in this gig, Baby!

And we had to say goodbye to a very prominent queen this week, too. No spoilers here but… She was classy beyond her years. But then we also got Ru’s twisted little announcement at show’s end so… Will a departed queen get to swish back into the competition next week? And if so… WHO’S IT GONNA BE??? (Comment on the YouTube recap video, and tell us who you wanna see prance back.)

OK. I gotta go. Tamar Braxton is double-parked and we’re heading out to go wig shopping, grab a bite at the Cheesecake Factory and talk about pinching Michael Urie‘s butt when we were all on set together this past week. Byyyyeeeeee!

707-grab-John-Jon-Violet-DonatellaGate-560pxAhhh, yes. It was a full-on Donatella turf war in the workroom this week, darling! Maybe they should have ALL done Donatella. Then we can just call the episode Dona-chella! (Ya know, like it’s Coachella, but with all Donatellas… Um, ok, never mind.)

707-John-Jon-Pearl-BigAng-point-560pxPearl’s tone is very pointed right now. As is her finger.

707-John-Jon-Pearl-eyes-face-expression-560pxAnd I do kind of love how Pearl has become the go-to queen this season for sassy little facial expressions. Who know she’d be such a cut up!??? Awwww…

707-John-Jon-Pearl-snarl-560pxSee??!! Even when Ru’s putting the girls throoouuuugh it, Pearl’s mug still delivers. SNARL, LADY, SNARL!!!

707-1grab-John-Jon-Snatch-cards-560px
“That’s all folks. Say goodnight, Jo(h)ns!”

All righty, Dragazoons! Thanks for watching! And if you’re in L.A. the weekend of May 16th-17th, come to the draggedy jamboree that will be RuPaul’s DragCon! Ru will speak, many queens from all seasons of Drag Race will be on hand, plus lots of celebs too! It’s gonna get severe. See you there, queen!

It’s Birthday, Bitch

#BornThisDay, Actor, John Gielgud

gielgud wilde

April 14, 1904- Most people remember him for his Oscar winning performance as Dudley Moore‘s butler in the 1981 film Arthur, but he was so much more. He was more romantic than Laurence Olivier, & more sensitive than Ralph Richardson. Sir John Gielgud was the greatest Shakespearean performer of the 20th century. His portrayal, as a very young man, of Hamlet, is considered the greatest of all time. He is a favorite theatre personality & a personal acting idol for me.

Gielgud is one of the few entertainers to have won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, & Tony Award. Known for his beautiful delivery, he was called the “voice that wooed the world”. He was still acting on stage at 90 years old & he now has a West End theatre named after him.

On stage, Gielgud had his act together, but for half of his time on this earth, his private life was a big old mess. His career was almost ended by his sexuality at a time when being gay was a crime. Today, when it is perfectly legal to indulge in some dude-on-dude action in Britain, it is difficult to imagine that gay men were taking enormous risks to be together just 40 years ago. Back then, sex between men, even performed in total privacy, could lead to ruined careers & years in prison.

At the very apex of his acting success, an incident in Gielgud’s life so crippled him that he contemplated suicide. In 1953, after a rehearsal for his lead role in A Day By The Sea, the 49 year old actor had cocktails with friends & then went on the prowl for an encounter with another man. He visited one of London’s infamous underground public bathrooms. Gielgud had done this before, but this time he was arrested by a Scotland Yard officer picked for his good-looks & assigned to the urinals for the purposes of entrapment poofsters.

During that era, The Home Secretary of the nation had called gays “A Plague Over England” & vowed to wipe out homosexuality before it destroyed the British Empire. You know how gays can ruin civilization. The police arrested more than 10,000 gay men a year, & the poor clueless Gielgud was one of them.

Gielgud, born into a famous theatrical family, he had never had any doubt that he preferred other gentlemen. One of his first acting jobs in the 1920s was to understudy the very gay Noel Coward, & he knew the score. In 1926, during the run of Coward’s play The Constant Nymph, Gielgud had his first serious romance, with fellow actor John Perry, who gave up his own promising stage career to live with his much more successful lover.

Gielgud’s homosexuality was common knowledge in the theatre world, but audiences only knew of his astonishing talent. After his Hamlet became a box-office sensation in 1934, British theatre-goers idolized him. Other actors, Alec Guinness, Edith Evans & Richard Burton thought he was simply the best.

In 1953, the year of the Elizabeth 2’s Coronation, Gielgud was nominated for a knighthood. He was at the very height of his remarkable career. He was directing himself in a new production, & he had a new lover, interior designer Paul Anstee. Despite his new knighthood & being one of the most celebrated actors on the planet, there he was, arrested & charged with “persistently importuning men for immoral purposes”.

Despite his high profile, Gielgud was not recognized when he was arrested. He was fined & urged to seek a doctor’s help for his perverse sex life, a common recommendation back when homosexuality was considered a medical problem. Gielgud’s good fortune ended when a reporter from the London Evening Standard happened to be in court during his hearing & recognized the actor’s magnificent voice. On his way to rehearsal that same afternoon, Gielgud saw his own name on the front page of the newspaper.

The humiliation was too much for Gielgud. A noted politician, called for him to be horsewhipped in the street after being stripped of his knighthood. His fellow cast members were very supportive, & when the play finally opened, Gielgud’s adoring public proved supportive & enthusiastically applauded his performance. The little bit of vindication was not enough for Gielgud. 5 months into the run, he had a nervous breakdown & left the play.

The USA government denied Gielgud a visa to tour his production of The Tempest around the country. Famed gay choreographer Frederick Ashton denounced Gielgud as having “ruined it for us all”. If as if he had not suffered enough, by the late 1950s, Gielgud’s acting style had fallen out of style. But, instead of going into hiding, he smartly adapted & continued to work by moving in the more modern theatre, performing the works of Harold Pinter & Samuel Beckett. Gielgud continued to work on stage & in films into his 90s. He had roles in 3 films in 1997, including the piano tutor in the film Shine.

Sweet revenge, Gielgud’s career enjoyed a renaissance in his old age. He even achieved respectability in his love life. At a Tate Gallery exhibition in the 1960s, Gielgud bumped into artist Martin Hensler, who was 30 years younger & shared his love of gardening. They fell for each other & remained a couple for 40 years. They died only weeks apart in 2000.

#BornThisDay: Blues Singer, Bessie Smith

Bat027 Smith, Bessie

April 15, 1894- Bessie Smith was born into poverty in Tennessee, no one knows for certain exactly what year. She was discovered singing on street corner in Chattanooga as a young girl by the great Blues singer Ma Rainey. When she was 19 years old, Smith married a man, but she had many love affairs with other women on the touring circuit, including the wife of her first musical director. Rainey was probably her first lover. She eventually separated, but never divorced, her husband when Smith’s affairs with other women became a problem in her marriage. Imagine that.

In 1923, Smith released her first recording, Down-Hearted Blues, selling nearly a million copies & making her a musical superstar. She gained the moniker “Empress Of The Blues”, popular with white & black music fans. Her immensely successful “race records”: Down Hearted Blues, St. Louis Blues, Nobody Knows You When You’re Down & Out, & Gimme A Pigfoot & A Bottle Of Beer became all the rage. By the end of the decade Smith had become the highest paid black performer of all time. Smith toured on her own private train with a troupe of 40. She performed & recorded with Louis Armstrong & she starred in the film St. Louis Blues (1929). During the Depression, popular musical tastes changed to jazz & swing & Smith’s style of blues, rooted in vaudeville, had fallen into disfavor with white audiences. Smith found solace in booze & girls.

Her career was beginning to find traction again when, tragically, in 1937, she was killed in an automobile accident while on a concert tour. The circumstances surrounding Smith’s death remain mysterious after nearly 80 years. It seems likely that Smith bled to death while her ambulance drove around in search of a hospital that would take black patients, a situation that was all too common during the era of “Jim Crow” laws. Edward Albee based his terrific 1959 play, The Death Of Bessie Smith, on the end of her life.

Smith’s funeral was held at an African-American Chapter Elks Lodge. 10,000 mourners viewed her coffin. But, there was no money for a proper burial & she was laid to rest in an unmarked grave outside of Philadelphia.

Her husband’s family spent the money from her royalties. 33 years later, in 1970, Janis Joplin, who named Smith as a major influence on her own career, purchased a worthy headstone for Smith. A few months later, Joplin was gone, taken by a drug overdose.

Smith was unquestionably the greatest of blues singer & her influence continues today. She was an inspiration for the vocals of Billie Holiday & Aretha Franklin. Frank Sinatra named her as a favorite. Her music has emotional intensity; her voice brings immediate personal pain, rough, crude & honest.

“I know women that don’t like men. The way they do is a crying sin. It’s dirty but good, oh, yes, it’s dirty but good There ain’t much difference, it’s just dirty but good.” It’s Dirty But Good

2 decades in the making, Queen Latifah produces & stars in Bessie, a new bio-pic from HBO, which begins airing next month. Queen Latifah is the right person for the role & HBO is the best studio for this project. The trailer makes me very excited for this project. Smith’s story is worth telling & getting it right.

The Carpool Karaoke premise is a little thin but brilliant. James Corden gets Jennifer Hudson into to riding with him to work and they make a quick stop at a drive-thru and the workers get the surprise of their lives. They both sing their hearts out on some her hits, stop for a selfie with Hudson’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and James belts it out, just like he did with Mariah Carey. Watch.

#SissyThatHistory: Larry Kramer on George Washington, “He Was a Big Queen, Basically”

Playwright, author and AIDS activist Larry Kramer has expounded on his new book, The American People: Volume 1: A Search for My Heart, on Sirius Radio. It’s billed as “a novel” but Kramer says is a “history,” and which, as per usual with Kramer, is creating some controversy. He describes George Washington as a man who had sex with men and writes the same of Alexander Hamilton, who “was in love with George,” Ben Franklin, Andrew Jackson, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, and “the most powerful gay man” in American history, J. Edgar Hoover. Jamestown was a HOTBED of gay sex, Kramer writes, partly because it only included men for years. Not only did Abraham Lincoln have intimate affairs with men – a thesis that was seen as far-fetched a number of years ago, but which more historians now support – but, Kramer writes, Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth was queer, too, and Joshua Speed, thought to be Lincoln’s lover, was a “hustler” as well as “gift” from Booth. Today is the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s death. Kramer said:

“In the case of Washington, he was a big queen, basically. He decorated everything. He designed all the uniforms, the buttons. The correspondence exists with all the dealers he dealt with in England to make everything. And then there was a man called Baron von Steuben, who was German, who designed all the maneuvers for all the troops of all the great armies in Europe. And he kept getting thrown out after he made the armies real – like Rockettes [laughs]. He got kicked out and he came to George. And he and George hit it off like nobody’s business.

George put him to work right away and they designed all these maneuvers and it was like putting on show. That’s for starters. And there’s no question, that Alex [Alexander Hamilton], really – whether it was a father/son thing – that Alex was very much in love with him. And Alex Hamilton was very handsome. And George was much older. And that’s been written about. There was a mutual attraction between them… Hamilton also had a young lover, a fellow officer, John Laurens is his name. There were letters between the two. Even the [Ron] Churnow book mentions that.”

Juicy! True or not, Pat Robertson is planning a fresh rant. (via Huffington Post)

This is sort of complicated, see if you can follow… Nasr Bitar, who’s from Ontario, Canada, timed his selfie perfectly. After spotting Google‘s Street View car in his neighbourhood, he figured out the pattern it was driving in. He told BuzzFeed:

“When I learned the pattern I parked my car by the side of the of the main street anticipating Google Car to exit and turn. As soon as it did I snapped a picture with my phone that was already out and ready. I was looking for the address of my friend’s house and how to get there using Google Maps when I realised they updated they’re street view. Then I immediately checked the intersection I was at and found myself by the side of the street taking a selfie.”

Bitar uploaded his selfie to Instagram and it became a selfie inside a screenshot inside an Instagram post. Inception!

If you are not comatose, you know that Hillary Clinton officially launched her campaign for POTUS Sunday afternoon. Sunday’s announcement was met with mostly positive affirmations from the famous to the non. Stars took to social media to show support for the former secretary of state. Vanity Fair‘s Ben Park made this collage featuring who-know-Ru and others like the 21 year-old pop diva Ariana Grande to 73-year-old music legend Carole King to Magic Johnson. Amy Poehler, Clay Aiken, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Uzo Aduba among others showed their support too. I think without being RuDe, one might add:
