Meryl Streep To Sing “Bad Romance” In Her Next Film, Gays Lose Their Damn Mind

Meryl Streep attends a photocall for 'Into The Woods' at Corinthia Hotel London in London, England

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that in the upcoming dark dramedy Ricki And The Flash (out August 7), Meryl Streep plays the lead singer of a cover band who chooses to abandon her family and continue down the rock star road rather than be a mother.

And here’s the best part: According to director Jonathan Demme:

“In the film, Streep belts out a dozen sing-along-worthy hits in the film including Tom Petty’s ‘American Girl,’ ‘Wooly Bully,’ Bruce Springsteen’s ‘My Love Will Not Let You Down,’ and even ‘Bad Romance’ by Lady Gaga, all recorded before a live audience. We didn’t use playback. We’re not sweetening it up on the soundtrack. It’s performance! And though I shouldn’t say it—but I want to say what I feel in my heart—Ricki and the Flash blow away every original.’”

I think my head just exploded.

Madonna Inception: Madonna Imitates Nadya Ginsburg Imitating Madonna

Screen Shot 2015-04-10 at 3.26.39 PM

Last night, Madonna confessed to Jimmy Fallon that she’d always wanted to be a standup comedian. He promptly gave her a microphone and told her to try out any material she’d been working on. The result was unexpectedly hilarious, although, strangely enough, the jokes she told were almost EXACTLY the same jokes that comedian and professional Madonna impersonator Nadya Ginsberg uses in her Madonnalogues show.

So IS Madonna copying her imitator?

“I KNOW IT SOUNDS CRAZY,” Nadya said when we reached out to her for a reaction, “but when you look at the evidence it’s hard not to disagree and I have been flooded with fans telling me to believe it’s true as well.”

Decide for yourself. Compare and contrast Nadya’s joke about trolling her son’s friends for dates, and Madge’s take on the same thing. Coincidence?

But what if Madonna was actually cribbing her material from Nadya? What kind of case does Nadya have? Can a person steal material from someone who uses THEM for material? I don’t know, I don’t know. It’s a logistical hall of mirrors that’s probably best not to think too hard about.

ALSO:

Nadya needs your help funding the next season of her Madonnalogues on Youtube. Check out her Kickstarter ASAP!

Hot on the high heels of her critically acclaimed series Madonnalogues comes a new season with everything you loved about the first season with less focus on storyline and more variety.

In order to shoot 10 Episodes and deliver them weekly, Nadya needs your support to rent camera and lighting gear, pay hair and make up people, buy props and costumes, secure locations, and provide vegan, cruelty free kosher meals in a post apocalyptic craft service setting so she can populate the world with TV friendly, multi-ethnic babies. For examples of Nadya Ginsburg’s work which has developed an international cult following, check out her youtube page here: http://www.youtube.com/nadyaginsburg

Nadya wants to hear what YOU want to see. Tweet her at https://twitter.com/nadyaginsburg with the hashag #MadonnaloguesVarietyHour and let her know!

Joel Grey Cabaret

April 11, 1932 – Earlier this year, when Joel Grey came out of the closet at 82 years old, most of my friends were like, duh? With a 50+ year obsession with the star of Cabaret, you think that I might have noticed earlier.

6 decades into his celebrated career, Grey continues to work. In 2012, he was seen on Broadway he appeared in Cole Porter‘s Anything Goes & he directed the first Broadway production of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart, taking home another Tony for his awards shelf.

I am not certain how I came to latch onto Grey. The heart wants what the heart wants. From an early age, I have been drawn to those all-purpose show biz journeymen stars of Screen, Stage, Concerts, TV, Nightclubs, Commercials; actor/singer/dancers/entertainers: Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Liza, Fred Astaire, Noel Coward. I became fascinated with Grey in the mid-1960s. I wanted to model my career on his, & strangely… I wanted to kiss him.

I look back today, & I am actually embarrassed that I had a Joel Grey scrapbook. What sort of weird little gay child was does such a thing? I was 11 years old, & while visiting the grandparents in rural Illinois, I insisted that they drive 80 miles to St Louis to see Grey (& Bernadette Peters) in George M! at the outdoor Municipal Opera. I need you to understand, I didn’t want the grandparents to take me to see the musical; I wanted them to drop me off several blocks away & I would enter on my own.  I would see the show solo (so very cosmopolitan) & not have to share my Joel Grey moment with the rubes. I loved seeing the musical about the life of George M. Cohen & I was zany-over the moon for Grey’s performance, singing, dancing, acting. The thrill lingered for months.

The scene shifts to Seattle, in 1991. I am fully adult, in my late 30s, & I have done a little acting, singing & dancing myself. I am “day jobbing” as a maitre d’ at a popular, upscale vegetarian eatery. I’m not easily impressed by celebrity. In the year of having this job, I have sat regulars Tom Skerritt, Yaphet Kotto & Meg Ryan, but I am not at all prepared when I have to face my childhood idol, Joel Grey, when he & guest enter the cafe.

I gently explain to the Oscar, Tony, BAFTA, &  Golden Globe winner (he is one of only handful of actors to win a Tony & Oscar for the same role) & his guest, that we have a bit of a wait, & while trying not to offend the others in line, I will do everything I can to get them a table very soon. I consider kicking the lingering, tea drinking lesbians out of the joint. While standing at the host podium, a few inches away from the object of my childhood obsession, a small group of 20 something veg-heads enter & push their way up to me & my waiting list. I keep thinking: “No! Please! Don’t bother Joel Grey! He is MY guest.”  When the group reaches me, they shriek, giggle, point, not at Grey, but at me, & then inquire: “Hey, aren’t you that guy in Singles?”

Yes indeed, boys & girls, I was recognized for my own acting work in front of the man whose photos, reviews, programs & ticket stubs filled this little homosexual theatre nerd’s scrapbook.

Joel Grey: “You are really in the film Singles?”

Stephen: (sheepish, yet sexy, with genuine humility) “Yes, Mr. Grey. Cameron Crowe was really fun to work with. It was a great shoot.”

Grey: “My daughter is a friend of Campbell Scott & I believe he is in that film. He is such a nice young man… & so smart & talented. He is really going to go places.”

Stephen: (a bit bodacious) “… & that would be Jennifer Grey, star of Dirty Dancing? & yes, Campbell Scott is quite talented & a real sweetheart.”

Then it happens, I have held off for so long & now sickeningly, I gush. I tell this great performer about the experience of seeing George M! all by myself at 11 years old, about the scrapbook, & even the crush. I explain how Cabaret changed my life. I have met & worked with my share celebrities & important actors by this point in my life, & I have never behaved like this. & I am on the job! What was wrong with me? It was as if my circuit board overloaded.

Grey: (laughing & smiling) “Well Mr. Singles, you are just something else!”

Stephen: (crossing Grey’s name off the waiting list) “Your table is ready, Mr. Grey. This way, please.”

Grey tears off a corner of the waiting list from the clip board, borrows my pen, & takes a moment to write something down. I pray it is not a complaint to the owners about my blathering. Even after all his decades in show biz, am I the gayest thing he has ever encountered? Grey smiles & tucks the paper into my jacket pocket.

On my first chance, I read his note: “Thanks for being such a big fan for so many years. Love, Joel Grey”. I go in the walk-in fridge & cry. I cry for the little 11 year gay boy who would have never believed it possible. I still have that note. It is in a cigar box with Merle Oberon’s place card, swiped from MGM’s 50th Anniversary Ball, my ticket stub from the 1974 Academy Awards, my call sheet from Drugstore Cowboy, a postcard from my father postmarked from Rutledge, Georgia, & the first love letter from the man who would eventually become my Husband.

Joel Grey was born Joel David Katz & he celebrates his 83rd birthday today. I know he must be happy to be an out & proud gay man.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel arrive at the world premiere of Twentieth Century Fox and New Regency's film 'Runner Runner' at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas

Actress Jessica Biel and husband Justin Timberlake just welcomed their first child, son Silas Randall Timberlake, their reps confirmed today. After months of keeping Biel’s pregnancy a secret, Timberlake finally confirmed (on his 34th birthday back in January) that the couple were expecting a baby. He captioned a pic of himself kissing Biel’s bare baby belly:

“Thank you EVERYONE for the Bday wishes! This year, I’m getting the GREATEST GIFT EVER. CAN’T WAIT.”

Weeks before she gave birth, Biel, 33, celebrated her own b-day — and Timberlake took to Instagram again to shower his wife with love.

“Happy Bday to the sweetest, most GORGEOUS, goofiest, most BAD-ASS chick I know. You make me smile ’til it hurts. I love you like crazy.”

Justin picked up an Innovator Award at the iHeartRadio Music Awards 2 weeks ago, calling Biel his “best friend and favorite collaborator.”

“I can’t wait to see our greatest creation yet. Daddy’s heading home right now to innovate by learning how to change a poopy diaper and get my swaddle on!”

Straight off his shows with Bjork (He produced six songs on her current album), Arca performed a sold out solo show in NYC the other night. Dressed in a black dress/leather chaps configuration, with morphing video projections by Jesse Kanda as a backdrop, the Londoner (by way of Venezuela) actually took to the mic with a rap in his native language…which is a treat, since his most recent electronic soundscape tracks are sans vocals. Needless to say, all eyes were on how cute he is…total package…pun intended! Get his current album Xen on iTunes, and check out the pics by Santiago Felipe below.

#BornThisDay: Dancer, Actress, Ann Miller

April 12, 1923- I have made it my life’s work to school the baby gays about the great entertainers that came before Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, & even before Madonna, who came on the scene a long, long time ago. Today’s #BornThisDay notable may not be known to you kids. She was often the secondary lead in films even at her zenith, but I think she is fabulous, & fabulous does not come easy.

Ann Miller was born Johnnie Lucille Ann Collier in a small Texas town. Her parents had expected a boy. She began dance lessons as a 3 year old to strengthen her legs damaged by a case of rickets. When little Johnnie was 10 years old she met Bill “Bojangles” Robinson at a local theatre & he gave her a few quick tap dancing lessons. She liked tapping & decided to make it her specialty. Her parents divorced & she & mother headed to Hollywood, determined to make it in movies. Upon arrival, they hocked everything they owned, even the automobile, just to survive.

When she turned 11 years old, she was already 5’9’’. Johnnie pretended to be of legal age & she was hired to dance for $25 a week at the Sunset Club. She changed her name to Ann Miller. She performed her machine-gun tapping for the thrilled crowd. At the Black Cat Club, she gathered up the coins customers threw to help pay the bills. Her mother received no alimony or support & it was the middle of the Great Depression.

Miller was just 13 years old when was discovered by Lucille Ball while doing a gig at the Bal Tabarin Club in San Francisco. Ball introduced Miller to the studio execs at RKO. Using a fake birth certificate showing that she was 18 years old, Miller landed a 7 year contract & a role in New Faces Of 1937 (1937). Her first notable role was in the terrific Stage Door (1937), in which she danced with Ginger Rogers, & had scenes opposite Ball, Kathryn Hepburn, & Eve Arden.

During this era she had good supporting roles in You Can’t Take It With You (1938), & in Room Service (1938) with the Marx Brothers. Miller was the one who introduced Lucy to Desi Arnaz. Later, that famed couple bought RKO Studios. Miller’s final film at RKO was Too Many Girls (1940) with co-stars & friends Lucy & Desi. She won raves on Broadway in George White’s Scandals in 1939 & 1940.

In 1940 Miller was traded to Republic Pictures where she sparked many otherwise dreary films. In 1945, she dated powerful MGM boss Louis B. Mayer, who asked her to marry him. She turned him down. Mayer swallowed sleeping pills, & immediately sent his chauffeur to summon her to his death bed. An ambulance arrived first.

Instead, Miller married Reese Milner, wealthy heir to a steel business. They lived on the largest ranch in California & raised prized cattle. A bully & a cad, Milner tossed Miller down a flight of stairs at their home. She was 8 months pregnant & tragically lost her baby daughter. Miller filed for divorce from her hospital bed. Mayer told her: “If you’d married me, none of this would have happened.” In 1958, Miller married her second millionaire, an oil man who looked like the first husband. 3 months later, he broke her arm. A third marriage to another oilman was annulled within a year.

Miller was still in a back-brace when she danced to Shakin’ The Blues Away in Easter Parade (1948) with Fred Astaire & Judy Garland. Mayer gave her a 7 year contract at MGM & Miller gained roles in the studio’s spectacular Technicolor musicals: On The Town (1949), Small Town Girl (1952), Kiss Me Kate (1953) & Hit The Deck (1955). Her last musical film was an odd remake of the classic The Women (1939) titled The Opposite Sex (1956), which I caught on TCM while enjoying cancer treatment last year & I thought I might be hallucinating.

In the 1960s, Miller replaced the original stars in the Broadway productions of Hello, Dolly! & Mame. In 1970, Miller had her greatest popularity & became a true Gay Icon by tap-dancing on a giant can of soup surrounded by  a bevy of high-kicking chorus girls, 20 foot fountains, & a 24-piece orchestra in a commercial for Great American Soups. In the spot, after her big finish, she tapped her way into a kitchen & her husband cried: “Why must you always make such a big deal out of everything?”

In 1972, while appearing in a stage production of Anything Goes, Miller was knocked in the head by the steel beam of the fire curtain. She was unable to walk for 2 years, but her life was actually saved by her famous, enormous, lacquered black wig. In 1979, Miller & Mickey Rooney both made comebacks & bunches of dough in Sugar Babies, which ran for 2 years on Broadway & went on the road for 7 more years. She was still working at the end of the 20th century appearing in a successful revival of Stephen Sondheim‘s Follies in 1998. Her last film was Mulholland Drive (2001). David Lynch & Ann Miller, what a nutty world. Miller published a pair of well-written memoirs, Miller’s High Life (1972) & Tops In Taps (1981), oddly a chapter title in my own memoir. She officially set a record for the world’s fastest tap-dancing at 500 taps a minute.Miller writes that she regretted never having children or finding true love:

“No matter what you’ve achieved, honey, if you aren’t loved, you ain’t nothing but a hound dog … I can still tap, but who wants to pay an old lady to tap sitting down?”

Miller took her final bow in early 2004, gone from lung cancer. She was 80 years old. A fan found the grave of her baby, who Miller had named Mary. Mary was exhumed & her tiny coffin was laid on top of her mother’s. They are buried together next to Miller’s mother at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City with a view of the former MGM Studios.

#BornThisDay: Playwright, Lanford Wilson

Lanford Wilson

April 13, 1937, I spent a certain amount of time & energy in the late 1970s attempting to get a production of the beautiful, soulful play, Fifth Of July, off the ground, one of those lost endeavors that somehow slipped away. I have remained a fan of the work of playwright Lanford Wilson for the past 50 years, since seeing his play Balm In Gilead in 1965. I was drawn to Wilson’s desperate eccentric characters were filled fears & needs that were portrayed with sympathy & a sense of humor.

Wilson was born in Lebanon, Missouri & he brought a certain Midwestern sensibility & outlook to his work. He studied at the University of Chicago & lived there for a decade worked briefly in advertising. Wilson emerged as a playwright at NYC’s Caffe Cino in 1964, where his play The Madness Of Lady Bright was a major hit & a significant milestone in the development of gay-themed theatre. The play’s protagonist, Leslie Bright, is a middle-aged gay man confronting a wistful past, a lonely present & an uncertain future.

Most of his plays, including the early: The Hot L Baltimore, Serenading Louie, & Balm In Gilead were produced in association with Circle Repertory Company, where he was founding member in 1969.

Wilson’s works are earthy, realist, greatly admired, & frequently performed. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1980 for Talley’s Folly, part a trilogy- The Talley Cycle, along with Talley & Son, & Fifth Of July.

My personal favorite, Fifth Of July, is a bittersweet & funny drama that explores the disillusionment of the Vietnam era. The Broadway production starred Christopher Reeve as a gay, paraplegic Vietnam veteran, & co-starred Jeff Daniels & Swoosie Kurtz. It was made into an excellent TV movie in 1982. Wilson’s other Broadway plays include Burn This (1987), Angels Fall (1983), & Redwood Curtain, which I understudied several of the roles when it premiered at Seattle Repertory Theatre in 1993. It was made as a film for TV film in 1995, featuring Jeff Daniels & John Lithgow. His work reminds me of Tennessee Williams, in the best way.

His Off-Broadway work The Hot L Baltimore, about the residents of a seedy residential hotel, was the basis of a short-lived TV sitcom of the same name, broadcast on ABC in 1975.

Actors frequently associated with Wilson’s work include: Judd Hirsch, William Hurt, Kathy Bates, Barnard Hughes, Christopher Reeve, Jeff Daniels, Cherry Jones & Cynthia Nixon.

Wilson’s work is filled with authentic, gritty, overlapping dialogue & characters concerned with broken dreams great & meager, plus the themes of loss in life, love, companionship & sanity. His characters are drawn as socially marginalized by a playwright whose own identity was as a guy from the Ozarks, a child of a broken home, & gay at a time when it was very tough to be gay. Wilson was one of the first mainstream playwrights to create central, meaningful gay characters.

Beginning in the early 1960s, Wilson lived in a small apartment in Greenwich Village. In the 1970s, he bought a house in Sag Harbor. He lived in both places, using his city apartment when he had a play in production. He became active in a community theatre company in Sag Harbor.

Wilson was bravely openly gay all of his professional life, but my research finds nothing about a boyfriend or partner.

In spring 2011, Wilson put down his pen at last, gone from pneumonia, at his home in Sag Harbor. He was 73 years old.

#FoodBankNYCChallenge: Gwyneth Paltrow Is Living On $29 A Week ($1.38 A Meal!) To Raise Awareness About Hunger

Gwyneth Paltrow at The Lionsgate Los Angeles Premiere for Mortdecai at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California. January 21, 2014.

Yes, for seven days, Gwyneth Paltrow is living on the $29-per-week budget of families who rely on the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP). She has accepted the #FoodBankNYCChallenge from her buddy celebrity chef and NYC Food Bank board member Mario Batali, who also challenged Sting and Debbie Harry. The challenge limits people to $1.38 per meal for a week. Gwyneth spread the word on Twitter, along with a photo from the grocery store of what she purchased with her $29. The haul included limes, cilantro, corn, whole grain brown rice and eggs. The #FoodBankNYCChallenge is meant to raise awareness about hunger and the struggle to live on a budget of just $29 per person for a week. Participants can use coupons, but they cannot use food that was already in their homes or food given to them by others.

I’ve seen comments posted putting Paltrow down for doing this asserting she’s a “liberal martyr” and saying that she’s “the worst!” No, YOU who do nothing, criticize and write things like that, YOU are “THE WORST.” But watch everyone continue trash her for this. The girl can’t win. It was a challenge, she didn’t make it up. And people are really going hungry trying to live on this allotment. To find your local food banks, you can go here.

#MTVMovieAwards: Amy Schumer Made Fun, While Everyone Else Shamelessly Promoted

Amy Schumer opens the show at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles

469065460

Amy Schumer hosted the MTV Movie Awards Awards like a seasoned pro and if you’ve see her show Inside Amy Schumer, you know her brand of self-effacing, uncomfortable humor. Her pre-taped parodies sent up of some of the year’s biggest movies. A Boyhood spoof, had her telling a boy that she was going to end up yelling at strangers in The Bachelor’s hot tub, but her best lines were onstage alone:

Magic Mike XXL. It really is magic. Anytime I watch those guys, at least two of my fingers disappear. It’s so weird.”

Furious 7 —which is what they’re calling the people that saw Jupiter Ascending. If you don’t get that, that’s why that joke works.”

“This drought in California is horrible. I can’t. And I just found out about it right now. Like all I can think about for another couple minutes. Support your Congress thing, and like, science. And just tell Wall Street, like, bring back our water.”

Shailene Woodley was voted the most popular girl at school, I mean at the 2015 Movie Awards, being that she was in the tearjerker school play, I mean MOVIE, where she croaks it. She accepted multiple popcorn prizes, including a special one for being an MTV Trailblazer. (Having been on the scene for 15 minutes, this seems a bit odd but you know, the popular kids LOVE her!) She also got Best Female Performance and Best Kiss (with Ansel Elgort) for her role in The Fault in Our Stars, which was Movie of the Year. Really? OK, well that should tell you how seriously ANYBODY takes this awards show. Jimmy Kimmel introduced Kevin Hart by making fun of his height relentlessly:

“They said Kevin was too small to be a comedy giant… his friends called him Eddie Smurfy, Tracy Munchkin, and Bernie McNugget.”

Kevin Hart IS funny (sometimes) but after enduring Kimmel’s jabs, he and his tiny son and daughter (a visual trick to make him look tall?) picked up the Comedic Genius Award. The “G” word? Really? OK, if you say so tweens. But really the whole shebang was one BIG (shameless) excuse for franchise movies to get their casts assembled for a photo opp, and to present various awards together – and ALL of the big upcoming movies did; The Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s cast gave Robert Downey, Jr. a Generation Award (meaning he’s of the MTV generation and not this current one, I guess?) Teen-genre films like The Maze Runner, Mockingjay, and Neighbors all won multiple prizes; Magic Mike XXL presented JLo with the Best Scared as Sh*t Performance for The Boy Next Door; The Pitch Perfect 2 cast pitched their new movie; Dwanye Johnson had a massive firestorm of an ad for his upcoming disaster flick, San Andreas, and Amy Schumer’s comedy vehicle, Trainwreck was mentioned many times. Charlie XCX performed as did FallOut Boy, but as Amy Schumer said at the top of the show, the M in MTV has been missing for decades:

“I don’t want the winners to worry about their speeches going too long, because MTV is the one network that refuses to play music.”

Exactly. Here are the night’s big winners:

Movie of the Year: The Fault in Our Stars

Best Male Performance: Bradley Cooper, American Sniper

Best Kiss: Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, The Fault in Our Stars

Best Duo: Zac Efron and Dave Franco, Neighbors
