#NYFW: From Marc Jacobs To The Blonds – 7 Colorful, Luxe, Fall ’15 Sophisticollections

JEREMY SCOTT, ANNA SUI, DESIGUAL

JEREMY SCOTT, ANNA SUI, DESIGUAL

New York Fashion Week is over and this NOT a round up of THE best collections, or THE trends for next fall, but rather my personal take featuring seven collections that had, as the headline advertises, color, luxury and sophistication with a little extra oomph. Marc Jacobs modulates that sophistication and combines it with unexpected luxury. Jeremy Scott gives us plenty of pop and zing, as always. Prouenza Schouler this season gave us a new, freed-up direction with these fresh silhouettes. Anna Sui’s collection was a variation on her signature boho chic. Desigual, Delpozo and The Blonds both provided color, kooky glitz AND glamour (The Blonds looks could go DIRECTLY to the Drag Race runway.) For more pics of these collections and all of the Fashion Week poop, check out The Cut.

They are just right around the corner, kids. Is your stylist hauling looks over to the Four Seasons Beverly Hills for a fitting? Are you picking out some Neil Lane jewels? Hey, what about that speech? What if you do FINALLY win? (Third time’s a charm, Bradley Cooper.) You know there’s always one memorable one of the night and the rest are pretty predictable. Need some help? Well, Vulture has come to the rescue (J.K. Simmons are you listening?) Why not try the Oscar Acceptance-Speech Generator? Just pick a category, add a few key words, and you’re good-to-go! Best of luck, Marion Cotillard, you’ll need it!

OSCARBallot15

Are you having an Academy Award‘s viewing party? It doesn’t take much; a TV, (cocktails!), some colored pens and pencils… You can turn The Wow Report‘s FREE Color-By-Number Oscar Ballot (created by me, Trey Speegle) into a party for 2 or 20. Click on the image to enlarge for a hi-res version to print out. (It’s designed for oversized 11 x 17″ paper, but it’ll reduce to an 8.5 x 11″ standard sheet.) It doesn’t include every single nominated category, but do you really want to try to guess “Best Sound Effects Editing?” If so, the full list of nominees is below. You know the odds-on winners for the major categories, right? Barring a MAJOR upset, here’s a little cheat-sheet with my predictions for the top row:

Best Actor, Michael Keaton. Best Actress, Julianne Moore. Best Supporting Actor, J.K. Simmons. Best Supporting Actress, Patricia Arquette. Best Director, between Wes Anderson and Richard Linklater, but I’d give it to Linklater (Anderson will likely get Best Original Screenplay). Best Picture, Boyhood, but I wish it would Birman, as it’s my fave of the year.

If you take pics of your coloring party and completed ballots, tag them #coloroscar @wowreport, and you may see them on The Wow Report next week. Just to make it more fun, you could make it a drinking game too! Take a sip every time you hear Boyhood, Birdman or Budapest. Cheers!

BigFreedia

San Francisco based pop artist Jason Mecier creates outrageous 3-D mosaic portraits of treasured pop culture icons. You’ve seen his Ru, his Lisa Vanderpump, his Justin Timberlake, and his Honey Boo-Boo, of course – all gorgeously rendered from candy and jewelry and common household objects. Now he’s done an absolutely uncanny portrait of Big Freedia that he’ll be showing EXCLUSIVELY at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery for our “Big Freedia: Twerk of Art” exhibit. (SPOILER ALERT: It’s a MATTRESS!)

“Big Freedia: Twerk of Art” will also feature works by & inspired by the New Orleans Bounce SENSATION Big Freedia in honor of the 3rd season premiere of Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce on Fuse. Besides Jason’s amazing portrait, you can also check out original photographs by the Queen Diva herself, cheekily celebrating the New Orleans twerk culture. The exhibit will also feature new works by artists Sham Ibrahim, and Kenneth Leslie. It’s going to be AMAZING!

And YOU’RE is invited! If you are in the LA area, please stop by and give us some love! RSVP to events@worldofwonder!

Check out the gallery of Jason’s past work, below.

“We’re all going to fucking DIE!” gasped international starlet and RuPaul’s Battle of the Seasons MC, Michelle Visage, when I spoke to her on the phone just moments ago. Her tour bus – carrying THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS DRAG QUEENS – broke down earlier this afternoon in Angola, Indiana, en route to Cleveland, Ohio, where they were to perform at a sold-out concert venue. She muttered something about a ball bearing getting stuck in a wheel, but frankly, her voice was weak, and it trailed off before she could finish the sentence.

Visage, and the rest of the girls (including Raja, AlaskaBenDeLaCremeIvy Winters, Jinkx Monsoon, Manila Luzon, and Sharon Needles) are currently huddled together on the bus, in a closed garage, that is SLOWLY FILLING UP WITH CARBON MINOXIDE! It’s been SEVEN HOURS, so it’s only a matter of time before the oxygen runs out and THEY ALL DIE!

“Michelle! Michelle!” I screamed. “If you don’t make it… what do you want people to remember you for?”

Moments passed. Too many moments. I thought she had already perished. Finally she cleared her throat and whispered: “Eyeliner…”

“Yes? And…?”

“…tits…. and CLASS!”

She then handed the phone to Alaska, who bravely gave the following statement: “I would gladly die for art. It would be an honor and a privilege to die in such splendid company.”

And then the phone went dead.

UPDATE:

Playhouse Square in Cleveland, Ohio, has announced that Friday night’s performance of RuPaul’s Drag Race Tour has been postponed as the tour bus carrying DRAG ROYALTY is broken down in Angola, Ind., with no chance of arriving in time for the 9 p.m. curtain.

Charles Moore, Martin Luther King Jr. Addressing A Meeting Of The Montgomery Improvement Association, Which Was Founded In 1955 To Organize The Bus Boycott. A Year Later, The Bus System Was Integrated, 1958

Selma March 1965” features over 150 photographs depicting the three Selma-to-Montgomery marches that rocked the nation and galvanized the Civil Rights Movement in 1965. Gallerist Stephen Kasher says:

“Never before in New York or any other gallery has the work of photographers James Barker, Spider Martin and Charles Moore been brought together like this. By combining their work, the exhibition captures in a new way the angst, courage and chaos of this seminal moment in American history.”

As the Academy Award nominated film illustrates, on March 7th, 1965, Alabama state troopers and a local posse attacked civil rights demonstrators in Selma, stopping a planned peaceful march to the state capitol in Montgomery, wounding many innocent marchers. Filmed and photographed, “Bloody Sunday” instantly caused nationwide outrage. Days later, another march, led by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was turned back. A third, ultimately successful march left Selma on March 21, arriving in Montgomery five days later. By then, President Lyndon B. Johnson, pushed by Dr. King and the horrific images of brutality captured by Martin, Moore and others, had introduced the Voting Rights Act to Congress, which became law later that year.

“Together the images on display present a complex, compelling tableau that is both monumental and intimate, brave and vulnerable. The exhibit is inspiring, but also a chilling reminder that those who fight for social justice do at great risk, with no guarantee that their efforts will be successful – though sometimes they are, if only partially.” –Steven Kasher

“Selma March 1965″ commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Selma marches as well as the Voting Rights Act they catalyzed. It is the 30th public exhibition that Kasher has organized of photography of the Civil Rights Movement. The exhibition opens at Steven Kasher Gallery Thursday, March 5th, 6–8 PM and runs through April 18th, 2015. It will be attended by James Barker, Tracy Martin and Michelle Moore Peel.

000_MICK

Bob Bonis managed tours of the Rolling Stones and The Beatles and he shot photos along the way. His collection of 2,700 Stones and 750 Beatles snapshots are now being sold on eBay. The young Brit musicians wanted an experienced American manager to organize their travels in the US, and they got Bonis to take the job. Over the numerous tours from ’64-66, Bonis photographed private moments with these legendary rock stars in their prime. Bob died in 1992 and until in 2008, when his son Alex rediscovered the one-of-a-kind archive, they’d been stored for over 40 years in a basement. He partnered with Kurt Benjamin of the LA-based Rare Rock Archives to create The Bonis Archive.

“We’re not in the merchandise business. We will never do an open edition of any photos from our archive ever.”

Once an edition sells out it’ll never be reprinted. The Bonis Archive is now on sale in editions between 50 and 250, from $175 to $625. Each print comes with a certificate of authenticity from the Grammy Museum. They are all pretty amazing, as you can see. Not like Annie Leibovitz‘s famous 70s tour pics of the Stones with the boys seriously misbehaving, Bob’s pics were taken in the hedy days of their early stardom. A bit surprising that of all the internet outlets that exists that they chose eBay, but I guess in order to make the photographs accessible to fans all over the world it was a good choice. Check them out here.

Street artist create controversal Oscars statue

LA street artist Plastic Jesus put a life-sized gold Oscars statue snorting cocaine on Hollywood Boulevard, just yards from the red carpet (and World of Wonder’s offices.) The gold guy is snorting coke on his hands and knees, and popped up for just a few hours yesterday before being removed by the artist. Plastic Jesus told the Daily News:

“We’re deluded if we’re saying that cocaine isn’t a major part of Hollywood and almost every other city in the world. A lot of people will sit down and watch the Oscar show this Sunday and then go and indulge in cocaine. I want to cause controversy about the issue. But I don’t want to cause controversy about the placement. I didn’t want a confrontation. The piece is out there. People have posted it. It got enough publicity to get people to think.”

Last year, Plastic Jesus created a similar statue of a life-sized Oscar statue injecting heroin which followed the tragic death of Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died of an overdose.

UPDATE: When word got out the “Oscar coke statue” was just up the street, Adam, James and Blake RUSHED over to the spot, only to find it gone… as they wrote me, “sad face.”

Here’s everything inside the $168,000 Oscar-nominee Swag Bag

The 87th Annual Academy Awards are tonight, everyone wants to win, but as the cliché goes, it’s an honor just to be nominated. Seriously, don’t feel bad for the so-called losers. They’ll get to go home with a gift bag worth $167,586.76. But really, you can’t get this much stuff into a bag or even a station wagon, you’ll need a small moving van to get all these freebies home. Just to be clear, they aren’t really freebies as you’ll also get a 1099 from the IRS, apparently, even if you turn down the gift bag or donate it to a charity.

Twenty-one gift bags will go out to host, Neil Patrick Harris and losing nominees in the categories of Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Director. This year’s swag haul is the most expensive ever, more than double last year’s $85,000 bag. In addition to lip gloss and lollipops, this year’s gift bag includes a $1200 bike by Martone Cycling, $12,500 “glamping” trip and $20,000 worth of unlimited Audi car rentals for a year. There’s also “sexy” stuff; the $250 Afterglow Pulsewave Vibrator, the $5,000 Couple’s “Love Shot” orgasm booster, and $28 worth of Naked Luxury Condoms. This all seems insane, right? But the hope of these brands is that the celebs will actually like the product and be seen using it (the vibrator & condoms, maybe not.) PR guru Katharine D. Paine says:

“Part of me says this whole thing is one big joke, but really it’s not. It’s part ‘desperation’ on the part of small brands wanting to be bigger.”

It’s also business advisers who think that by getting their clients in the gift bag, it will get them tons of press. Well, they all made The Wow Report, anyway… have a look.

Producer & director, Michael Bay, known for his action-packed big-budget blockbusters like the Transformers & Armageddon has built this spectacular party pad in the Hollywood Hills. Architect Chad Oppenheim (who designed a never-build apartment building in Miami that I bought into. His designs are minimal and spectacular. His original plan for this 30,000-square-foot, three-story house, with a 40-seat digital theater, was modeled on another unrealized proposal for a group of Caribbean villas. Bay, who is based in Miami, uses the house just for parties during trips to LA:

“I wanted the house to have the feel of a resort. I looked at the first sketch Chad showed me and said, ‘That’s the house I want!’”

The huge house makes a fairly discreet impression from the street side, with much of it built into the hillside. According to Architectural Digest:

Once encountered straight on, however, the scheme is a tour de force of architectural acrobatics, its breathtaking overhangs and column-free spans engendering a palpable sense of weightlessness. This quality is perhaps most eloquently expressed in the two independent volumes balanced atop the house’s main level—one a bedroom suite for Bay, the other for VIP guests.

Amazing what money will buy, huh? (Bay’s estimated net worth is north of $400 million, btw) But one thing it doesn’t buy is good taste, something more evident in his architectural and design choices and less so in his films, if you ask me. To illustrate, he just won a Razzie for Worst Director of 2014 – I know, I’m sure he’s crying all the way to the bank.
