#LastEgoTrip: Literally TONS of Russian Mafia Gravestones

I don’t know what to say here, the headline really says it all. In the 19th and early 20th century, gravestones would have small ceramic photographic images affixed to them. (My friend Josef Astor did an exhibit with using this technique. The piece to the left, was shot in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, resting place of Oscar Wilde & Jim Morrison) But who knew this was a “thing”. It makes New Jersey and The Sopranos look like Paris. After scrolling through these images, you’ll see, there’s not a big variation on the look and if they didn’t have names on them, I’d swear they were all the same 3 guys.

Nothing funny about being dead but it is a chance to tell a long lasting last line. Although not on their headstones, I love these two quotes SO much:

“Life was a funny thing that happened to me on the way to the grave.” –Quentin Crisp

“First one thing happened and then another, and before they knew it, they were all dead” –Michael O’Donoghue

But my favorite of all-time, which has been used over and over is:

“I told you I was sick.”

Quote Unquote: Tilda Swinton On Art & The Origins of “Glamour”

TildaSwintonTimWalkerWMagazineTheSurrealWorldNovember2014

1423236127003

This third person post came from writer and porn star Conner Habib‘s blog. He witnessed Tilda Swinton’s “moving and radiant speech” in Houston recently. She was presented with the Rothko Chapel Visionary Award at the The Rothko Chapel, which is home to fourteen of Mark Rothko’s paintings. I posted pics of Swinton from W magazine on her visit to Houston recently. It’s also a spiritual and human rights center whose mission is “to inspire people to action through art and contemplation, to nurture reverence for the highest aspirations of humanity, and to provide a forum for global concerns.”

I came across this quote from artist Mark Rothko himself on how now to view his work first:

“I’m not interested in relationships of color or form or anything else. I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions — tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on — and the fact that lots of people break down and cry when confronted with my pictures shows that I communicate those basic human emotions… The people who weep before my pictures are having the same religious experience I had when I painted them. And if you, as you say, are moved only by their color relationships, then you miss the point!”

Below is Tilda’s speech (edited by Habib):

“Discovering the landscape of a world inhabited by artists has been one of the miracles of my life.

I was brought up in a world where art was something owned and insured – usually inherited: but seldom if ever made by anyone I knew.

I had an early inkling that there was fun to be had over the hill, like the feeling when faced with a sunset that someone’s throwing a mega awesome party just beyond the nearest cloud, and I set off to join the caravan. Let’s just say I was in search of company, headed towards the glow, and I found it.

I believe that all great art holds the power to dissolve things: time, distance, difference, injustice, alienation, despair. I believe that all great art holds the power to mend things: join, comfort, inspire hope in fellowship, reconcile us to our selves.

Art is good for my soul precisely because it reminds me that we have souls in the first place.

We stand before a work of art and our spirit is lifted by it: amazing that someone is like us! We stand before a work of art and our spirit resists: amazing that someone is different!

It occurs to me on a regular basis that the cinema carries the potential to be perhaps the most humane of all gestures in art: the invitation to place ourselves, under the intimate cover of darkness, into another person’s shoes, behind another set of eyes, into another’s consciousness. The ultimate compassion machine, the empathy engine.

Here is the darkness. Here comes the light.

When my children were ten, they came back from school elated one day to tell us they had started the supremely grown-up business of learning science.

When we asked them about their first lesson, they proudly announced they were addressing the study of light.

When we pressed them to describe how their teacher had approached the topic, with the bemusement of those genuinely unaware that there could ever be any other way, they told us that she had closed all the shutters and that they had sat in the dark for an hour.

Where I live in the far north of Scotland, the question of light is an axis central to every season, to every day. In the topmost branches of June, the skies turn navy blue just before midnight and hover there until about 3:00 when the sun comes blooming up again.

At the turn of the year, on the other hand, a long lunch folds itself into the evening before you know it, and then into night-night blackness until way after the school bell in the morning.

A fisherman I know from a nearby village told me one day that he and his brothers had long ago pulled up a massive turtle, far from its tropical home, onto the deck of their boat in the North Sea off the east coast of Scotland. He described how it lay there, unfathomably exotic and helpless amongst the mackerel, and that he would never forget their discussion about its fate.

‘What is it? No idea. Let’s kill it.’ Which they did. He said he had never regretted anything so much in his life, that he knew something failed in them at that moment.

We know what threatens our humanity the most; we shouldn’t need reminding.

The capacity to project our own shadow onto others, to edit our understanding of our own frailty, to hold it at bay, to play tag with our vulnerabilities. You’re It, don’t touch me. Our attachment to an idea of malevolent foreignness, of malign darkness: this is our Kryptonite… we know this well.

Over the weeks that my mother was dying, the year before last, I went out into the nights and trained my eyes to see in the dark.

It provided a particular kind of comfort undiscovered anywhere else at that time. By then I had sat in the Chapel and the serene witness of Rothko’s velvet abyss accompanied me on those nightwalks. The truth is, it’s never been very far away, ever since.

The last feature film my friend Derek Jarman made before died of AIDS in 1994 was Blue. For many, his masterpiece – an Yves Klein- blue screen and a soundtrack.. a work made just as his sight was leaving him as he became blind.

Maybe most of all great art encourages us, as does this film, as does Rothko, not to stop at opening our eyes, but to go on to close them, as well. To go to what we know deepest, earliest and most clearly: that we humans are, in essence, humane, fair, kind. Gracious. Light-filled. Wise. And that our darkness is just what it is: an intrinsic and balancing ballast to all that loveliness.

…Perhaps the most radical suggestion we can make about ourselves is not that we are not different. Or even that we are. But that we are both.

I remember a very specific moment in my children’s development, around the age of seven, when the power of reason became the happening thing, as in, ‘ No I can’t climb up a tree with you now because this dinner needs cooking…etc?’’

Along with this magical property came the anthem that still rules in our household to this day, the mantra of it can be both.

‘Would I like the chocolate eclair or the fairy cake? Do I want to play with my Lego all night or, as it happens, go to sleep because I’m super tired?… Do I like my twin brother /sister or – could it be – that I really really hate him/her?”

…Light and Dark both at once.

Welcome to the age of reason, welcome to life.

…Wherever you are alone with yourself most will show in that magic mirror. And bear your heart witness, and keep you company whenever you need to draw on it.

We come. We take it home with us. We never really leave.

The Rothko Chapel is a sacred space because of precisely this capacity it has to re-bind, to re-balance, to re-store, to re-inspire the spirit in its simple and essential gesture of darkness held in light. Of art held in spirit. Of spirit held in life and the living of life. It is a truly humane space for humans to find themselves in.

Glamour is a word derived from the Scots, meaning ‘dangerous magic.’

The Rothko Chapel is glamorous beyond any glamour known to any Highland witch. It is a light that never goes out.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the kindness of your invitation.

And for the inspiration of your fellowship.” –Tilda Swinton, 2014

The Rothko Chapel, founded by Houston philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil, was dedicated in 1971 as an intimate sanctuary with the installed mural canvases of Mark Rothko (1903-1970), it see 80,000 visitors a year from all parts of the world.

Deadly Wreck: Bruce Jenner Says Paps Were Chasing Him When He Crashed

EXCLUSIVE FILE: Bruce Jenner with his Polaris RZR high performance ATV only weeks before being involved in a fatal car crash

Bruce Jenner told police that he was being chased by photographers when he crashed his Escalade into another car on the Pacific Coast Highway. This triggered a multi-vehicle accident on Saturday where an unidentified female driver was killed. Several other people were hurt but Jenner was photographed walking on the scene. Eyewitnesses told TMZ that Jenner, allegedly trying to evade paparazzi, rear ended the white car, sending it into oncoming traffic, where it was plowed into by a Hummer, killing the white car’s driver at the scene. Jenner’s Escalade was hauling the UTV above at the time and he told responders that as many as five paparazzi photographers were following him when the crash occurred. Police say Jenner passed a sobriety test and it appears —not yet officially confirmed — that he caused the accident, perhaps because of a paparazzi pursuit.

Ornery Hippie Goddess Joni Mitchell Covers New York Magazine’s Fashion Issue

o-JONI-MITCHELL-570

Joni Mitchell is on the cover of New York Magazine’s spring fashion issue, looking like the Ghost of Hippies Past. She comes off as slightly crotchety in the interview, but (as Yahoo points out) the kind of crotchety that you love and forgive when the person is amazing and has earned the right to act however they damn please. Says Mitchell: “Basically, at this time, I’m trying to fix my legacy. It’s been butchered. It’s been panned, and scanned, and colorized.”

To her several-million-strong crowd of fans, that might seem a strange notion. But exactly how she is celebrated is of special importance to her. To hear her tell it, most of her life has been spent in a state of revolt against other people’s nonsensical ideas about how she should think or dress, what she should believe, and how she should play music.

Although the conversation steers mostly towards music, Mitchell does not hold back in regards to anything, including her recent stint as a model for the Saint Laurent spring ad campaign photographed by Hedi Slimane. “He did shoot me in very harsh light, but we haven’t had any complaints about it,” she says, about the photographs. “Maybe it was even good for the culture. Who knows? A 71-year-old fashion model with overt wrinkles because of the bad light.” Of Slimane’s clothes, Mitchell is equally as forward, “[the clothes are] not innovative, but really good to wear, the kinds of things I’ve worn at one time or another in my life.”

Was the Giving Tree a Chump? Heidi Fleiss Weighs In

Givigntreeheidi

Is Shel Silverstein’s classic children’s book The Giving Tree a tender story of unconditional love or a disturbing tale of selfishness? Does it sentimentalize entitlement or is it a cautionary tale about being taken advantage of… to DEATH? And what does Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss think about it? These questions and more are answered after the jump.

Forensic psychologist and playwright Robert Levy writes in HuffPo:

In May, The New York Times Book Review‘s “By the Book” column asked the author Leah Hager Cohen about the worst book she had ever read. Her answer? Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree. “I cannot understand why this book, which sentimentalizes entitlement, benightedness, and contempt, became a classic of children’s literature,” she pronounced, with what I took to be self-righteous certitude.

I was astounded by her response. The Giving Tree? The beloved book of my childhood that I read to my own children today, stifling tears at its bitterly ironic message of ecological consumption and mindless greed? How could Silverstein’s parable be misinterpreted as a straightforward tale extolling the virtues of selflessness and sacrifice? Does anyone really think Silverstein intended his readers to happily accept that the tree, reduced to a mere stump at the story’s conclusion by the boy’s relentless taking, should truly be pleased by the boy’s actions, and that we should be as well?

Apparently so. One quick online search laid bare a passionate presence of The Giving Tree haters who virtually high-five one another over their shared disdain of the book. “This book reeks of the patriarchy,” a Goodreads member wrote in her one-star review. “Keep it away from your kids — especially your daughters.” One blogger argued that it “romanticizes self-destructive and self-negating behavior in women…. [T]he boy is a self-centered chauvinist who abuses the tree to the point of destroying it.” After reading similar indictments — mostly from women — I could no longer read the book in quite the same way, a shadow cast over my once unshakable interpretation. My own self-righteous certitude had been duly punctured.

Me? I’ve never like the book. “STOP ENABLING THAT BRAT!” I scream to the tree every time I read it. And: “IT’S YOUR OWN DAMN FAULT! YOU’RE LETTING HIM TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOU!” But then I’m tough like that. No fool for love am I.

Not everybody has the same takeaway though. In the 2008 WOW/HBO documentary Heidi Fleiss: The Would-Be Madame of Crystal, Heidi has her own unique take on The Giving Tree. In her mind, SHE’S the tree, you see and, well… just watch below.

Fascinating how people see themselves. And fascinating the way everybody can get out of the book whatever it is they need.

Nicole Kidman Is Suddenly Above Being Asked About Fashion

$

Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman at the 2015 G'Day USA Gala featuring the AACTA International Awards presented by Qantas at Hollywood Palladium in Los AngelesCall it “The Amal Effect” – stars suddenly thinking they’re “above” silly fashion questions. Last night at the Grammy Awards, Nicole Kidman was COMPLETELY PUT OUT when Ryan Seacrest DARED to ask her who designed her dress. Kidman was frostily silent, then after making Seacrest squirm for what seemed like minutes, rolled her eyes and said “I don’t know what to say.”

Ryan prompted her to tell her who designed the dress, and after another awkward silence he quickly moved on to Keith, asking who designed his T-shirt. Keith seemed just as bored by the question and the two stars wafted away on a cloud of insolence and hubris.

Really, Miss Thing?

NICOLE KIDMAN is above talking about fashion? The same Nicole Kidman, who Lainey Gossip points out, once “wanted that Dior by Galliano chartreuse dress so badly for the Oscars in 1997, she basically chased a woman up a mountain for it. The story is told in Bronwyn Cosgrave’s book Made For Each Other about the history of Oscar fashion. And when she finally put it on, she had the discipline and the tenacity to sit, unmoving, in a limo for 90 minutes so as not to wrinkle it so she could achieve perfection when she was finally photographed. The result? One of the most memorable Oscar dresses of all time. That dress practically made her.”

For her to behave this way now is just ridiculous. Who does she think she is? The red carpet is a fashion show, plain and simple. Why would any star feign surprise when asked about their dress?  Anybody that watches the red carpet isn’t waiting for a celebrity to make a statement on war and peace, and neither are the producers or the makers of the garments. You’re there to promote your latest project. You’re on the clock, act like it or go home.

And think about it: If they STOPPED asking you what you are wearing, you will no longer be wearing beautiful things for free. You think designers let you borrow and likely ruin their gowns for nothing?  Grow up and play the game.

#Grammys: Shirley Manson Blasts Kanye In An Open Letter

1423518666_shirley-manson-kanye-west-article

Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson thinks Kanye West‘s Grammys stunt was, well, trashy. After the singer rushed the stage when Beck beat out Beyoncé for Album of the Year –later telling E! that Beck should “respect artistry” and give his award to Beyoncé– Manson took to Facebook to call him out:

“Dear Kanye West,
It is YOU who is so busy disrespecting artistry. You disrespect your own remarkable talents and more importantly you disrespect the talent, hard work, and tenacity of all artists when you go so rudely and savagely go after such an accomplished and humble artist like BECK.”

You make yourself look small and petty and spoilt. In attempting to reduce the importance of one great talent over another, you make a mockery of all musicians and music from every genre, including your own. Grow up and stop throwing your toys around. You are making yourself look like a complete tw-t.”

Last night, West rushed Beck onstage, reached for the mic, and then returned to his seat. It seemed initially like he was poking fun at his infamous VMAs interruption of Taylor Swift in 2009 — but his post-show rant on E! made it clear that he was serious:

“I don’t even know what [Beck] said. I just know that, the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We aren’t going to play with them no more. ‘Flawless.’ Beyoncé’s video. And Beck needs to respect artistry, he should have given his award to Beyoncé. At this point, we tired of it. What happens is, when you keep on diminishing art, and not respecting the craft, and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration. We, as musicians, have to inspire people who go to work every day, and they listen to that Beyoncé album, and they feel like it takes them to a different place. And then they do this promotional event, and they’ll run the music over somebody’s speech, the artist, because they want commercial advertising. We aren’t playing with them anymore. And by the way, I got my wife, my daughter, and I got my clothing line, so I’m not going to do nothing that would put my daughter at risk, but I am here to fight for creativity. That’s why I didn’t say anything tonight, but you all knew what it meant when ‘Ye stepped on that stage.”

Really, no matter who you THINK should win, it’s not as though the Grammys are appointed by a music czar… they are VOTED ON by eligible Grammy voters and in the category Album of the Year, all voters are eligible, so it skews, depending on who the nominees are. But it isn’t as though they just hand an award to someone passing by… right? (via Us Weekly)

Lady Bunny’s Bits: A New War with Ukraine?

$
0
0

Our Nobel Peace Prize-winning president is considering a new war–not against a dirt-poor muslim nation, but against a superpower with nuclear weapons. Few of us know much about this oncoming war, because we feel no threat from the Ukraine which Obama is now thinking of arming. More after the jump.

ariete

“The possibility of lethal defensive weapons is one of those options that is being considered,” Obama said, in addition the “other means we can put in place to change Mr. Putin’s calculus.” PUTIN’S CALCULUS? What sort of gibberish is that? How do you bomb that? We’re going to start a proxy war by arming Ukraine and then possibly getting in deeper? But don’t worry–there won’t be any boots on the ground…yet. Despite the fact that ISIS is nowhere near the US and the US people have said we don’t want to be the world’s police any more, the US refuses to let that conflict be handled by the well-armed countries which neighbor the trouble zone. And these nations won’t step up to the plate as long as the US is prepared, as they have been so far, to drop 80% of the bombs. Besides, ISIS isn’t that large of an enemy, so we have to find a new war if our military contractors and weapons manufacturers are still gonna get paid.

So how about Russia? No one is challenging a conflict that we’ve already moved millions of dollars worth of weapons nearby and are threatening to move them to.Here’s what Steven Cohen, professor emeritus of Russian studies at NYU had to say:

“Now, you referred to me as emeritus. That means old. That means I remember things. And I remember that when we hit these kind of Cold War extremes back during the last Cold War, people spoke out in opposition in this country, not only folks like the three of us, ordinary folks, but I’m talking about senators, members of Congress—even the administration was divided—The New York Times, The Washington Post. We have the silence of the hawks now. The American war party is on the march. You can see how close we are to, literally, a military confrontation with Russia. And there is not one word of establishment, mainstream opposition in this country.

So, is this good or bad? Do we go to war? Did we have a debate before we invaded Iraq? We did. And those of us who opposed it lost the debate. But we had a debate. That “democracy now,” not today, not in the United States. There is no debate whatsoever. So, the danger is great. There is no opposition. All these people you’re showing—Strobe Talbott, General Hodges, anybody else you put on the screen, because only they speak to the American people—they’re on the march”.

No debate on war because then we might be forced to admit that both political parties represent war. And who is the Democrats’ great hope for 2016? Hillary Clinton, who said this of Putin’s actions in Ukraine:

“Now if this sounds familiar, it’s what Hitler did back in the ’30s.”

Stephen Cohen: “But the demonization of Putin has become so extreme in this country, I do not recall—and I entered this field back in the ’60s—the United States ever demonizing a Soviet communist leader the way our leaders do—Obama, Mrs. Clinton referring to him as a Hitler. Look, if Putin is Hitler, clearly we have to go to war. That’s the logic, is it not? Is it not? And where are the voices that say this is crazy? He may be a Russian nationalist. He may be threatening. But Hitler?”

So Putin’s “calculus” may be threatening to the people in Ukraine. And this requires your tax dollars to fix a situation over there. Obama is considering military action and Hillary seems more unnerved by Putin. I don’t think the Ukraine is worrying Americans, but it’s certainly popped up recently as something very worrying to our leaders. Because they always want to start wars and you can’t start one without a new enemy.

This is a great discussion by an expert on what it looks like we’re gearing up for.

It’s a sad day, indeed. I assume he was offered Fallon, Ferguson & Letterman‘s spots first and doesn’t want to do a chat show… the roster is full now, but I’ll bet he can write his own ticket. (His annual salary is $15 million, btw) Wonder what’s next for him?

The internet is going crazy and pulling the “Renee Zellweger” card on Uma Thurman. Claiming that Thurman has had some sort of p-surge that makes her look “almost unrecognizable” at the NY premiere party for her new miniseries The Slap. Here’s the thing… She looks different. But “dramatic?” “unrecognizable?” Looks more like she’s wearing next to nothing eye makeup and her hair is slicked back. What do you think? Is the internet overreacting too quick? And maybe she did in fact get some work done but it’s nothing to freak out over! She looks great! Au naturel!

Soooo…way back in December, before Bruce Jenner officially came out about his transitioning, the National Enquirer ran a cover pic of Bruce apparently stepping out of his SUV, in full cocktail attire. As with most of NE’s pics, this was a re-enactment…not the real Bruce Jenner. Anyway, now NYC scene queen Marti Gould Cummings, who actually posed for the pic, has come out with a video, apologizing to Jenner for the stunt.

“Bruce Jenner is incredibly brave and a pioneer who is leading the way for thousands of other people to make that brave decision to say out loud who they truly are. I am deeply sorry to Bruce Jenner personally and the entire trans community for doing The National Enquirer.”
